No one wants to come to Oakland so let’s trick them 😂
That’s what I was thinking lol “🤡”
Yeah basically looool
Another 20-30 years, just like Brooklyn and Harlem, it will all be revamped. Hoods will get demolished to pave the way for the ultra wealthy and elite.
So strange ... others can't see it happening.
No one wants to go to California! Good luck to you.
😂😂😂
April fools?
😅
Yes it’s a joke I bet. They could’ve done this decades ago but they pick, of all days, April Fools, to announce this effort? The bar for news to be taken seriously is much higher on this day than any other day of the year.
That would be the only sane explanation
Judging by the hairstyle of the spokesperson for SFO (1:43), I'd hope it was a prank, but I've seen other stories about the name change.
That’s a horrible idea. Wow
Easier than fixing the issues in Oakland
Imagine ppl stepping out and saying this is not the San Francisco I remember and the ppl here look different.
This idea is somewhere between dumb and stupid.
@@randallanno2327 you guys have no idea what you’re talking about… Oakland international airport is actually closer to Downtown SF than SFO and it’s more convenient. SFO isn’t even in San Francisco, it’s in San Mateo county and getting there is expensive and inconvenient
Worst idea ever. scamming flyer to fly into Oakland by accident....
All they have to do is hop on the Tenderloin on Tracks ... er I mean BART. They could even have a guided tour:: The Smells of Oakland.
I’ve lived in San Francisco and Oakland, and honestly enjoyed livin by lake Merritt more than nasty SF… that was a few years ago though. Also, this isn’t unheard of. Airports are located outside major cities all the time. Both of the Washington DC airports are actually in Virginia- DCA-Reagan is in Arlington,VA and Washington-Dulles is in Sterling, Virginia
Newark is considered a New York City airport despite being in New Jersey and people fine with it.
Plus, traveling from a smaller airport is usually cheaper and easier on the traveler. That’s the bigger selling point, avoid the massive airport by going to the small one.
This is so dramatic. If people can't pay enough attention to airport location when booking flights, they have bigger problems...
@@Bobspineableyes and Newark Liberty International Airport kept its name. it didn't change to New York Liberty International Airport
Oakland wants to throw San Francisco on the front of it because they know Oakland has the stigmata of being... well Oakland.
I don't even want to drive on 880N anywhere beyond Hayward. Crazy highway shootings, and hell no to Oak Town!
This is causing major dysentery between the two airports.
“Stigma” not “stigmata” 😂
Your Ok up to Marina. Past Kaiser? Good luck. Hell-genberger? "The lawd is my sheperd.....:
@@normanwang3107 what's the matter, afraid of getting shot? .. yeah, me too.
The kid said it eloquently, we are in Oakland not San Francisco .
Bay Area Oakland Airport would be ok.
Yes exactly
Agreed
Why even add that? Keep it simple.
@@tommydong8070 a lot of people don’t realize that the SFO and OAK airports are almost equally convenient. I used to live in Bay Area and the airports were equal distance from my house. I just used whichever one had cheapest flights
San Francisco Bay Silicon Valley Oakland International Airport
Hey Oakland! Changing your airports name to include San Francisco isn’t going to change the fact that you’re STILL Oakland!
It will fool international travelers putting them in the worst hellhole city
@@jobturkey7418it's the opposite here, New Orleans is a hellhole, the New Orleans airport is not in New Orleans, it's 14-15 miles away from New Orleans, it's idiotic and confuses anyone not from here.
I mean it's not like SFO is actually in San Francisco..
@@matthewr2906But it's not in Oakland. That's the key difference.
@@peryole Both of the Washington DC airports are actually in Virginia- DCA-Reagan is in Arlington,VA and Washington-Dulles is in Sterling, Virginia
After losing the Raiders, the Warriors, and (shortly) the Athletics, is THIS the only way leaders in Oakland can grab attention to their city?
Oakland As. The best thing that came out of Oakland honestly…..
They bout to lose the airport too. 😂
Yet Oakland voters continue to reward these politicians by re-electing like minded people generation after generation.
“No Sports San Francisco Bay Area International Airport”
“The Athletics-Raiders-Warriors Departure Field”
Oakland Airport of Anaheim
I can't believe people are paid good money to come up with ridiculous ideas like this.
Whatever happened to those anime characters BART paid good money for and were supposed to get people riding BART again?
@@fixpacificaI didn’t even know about that! SMDH.
Almost like the Homeless Industrial Complex... paid great sums to make the problem worse
They’re called Democrats
San Francisco Bay Silicon Valley Oakland International Airport
That will simply cause confusion. If a passenger were to say "San Francisco Bay...", people will think it's SFO which is incorrect.
If someone would think San Francisco Bay Oakland airport is SFO then they're pretty stupid
@@timrupp4219 A passenger can shorten the name to “San Francisco Bay” and then it will cause confusion. A person who is not familiar with the geography will think “San Francisco Airport”.
@@RaymondHng i suppose if someone is real stupid that could make a mistake like that
@@RaymondHng Their tickets will still say OAK. Airport identifier will not be change.
@@timrupp4219 Shortening names is common. Everybody does it.
Let's say that a businessman in the Bay Area tells a businessman in Japan over the phone, "Fly into San Francisco Bay Oakland Airport". The businessman in Japan who is unfamiliar with the airports in the Bay Area tell his travel department, "I need a ticket to San Francisco Bay Airport." Then the worker in the travel department who is unfamiliar with the airports in the Bay Area books a ticket to "San Francisco Airport". This mistake can easily happen.
_San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport_ and _San Francisco International Airport_ leaves room for ambiguity.
To the people who proposed this name change: Focus on reducing crime in Oakland instead of putting forth an incredibly stupid name change proposal. OAK is in OAKLAND. Do something to fix Oakland's problems and please don't create more. How stupid is this? Almost as stupid as allowing crime to run rampant in Oakland.
But, haven't you heard the Mayor say things are getting better, robbery's are down, thief is down, etc, we are making progress.
Geez, how bad is Oakland that not even the airport wants to be associated with Oakland. Sad to see the downfall.
They could do like the Oakland Raiders did and move to Las Vegas. Oh wait, there’s a popular airport there already. It would be hilarious for the first batch of travelers who end up at the wrong place because of this to sue the airport.
This isn’t that weird… Washington DC’s airports are both located in Virginia but their names allude to being in Washington DC (DCA-Reagan is in Arlington,VA and Washington-Dulles is in Sterling,VA). The point is to make it known that the primary destination (San Francisco) is very accessible from Oakland international airport. SFO and OAK airports are only 30min apart. Many people have no idea that Oakland has an international airport. When I lived in San Francisco, I used Oakland airport to fly directly to Portugal. It was actually more convenient than SFO.
@@prima-madalina Yes, exactly. The airport is literally on SF Bay and is closer to Downtown SF than SFO is. But I'm afraid most of the people here, like the original commenter, don't want to hear this. They've made up their mind and childishly agree with any negativity about Oakland.
That will cause confusion. Fix the problem not cover it up with another name.
I doubt people flying there care as that’s not the final destination. San Francisco is but flying to Oakland avoids the massive crowds and is cheaper.
What about East Bay Area - Oakland Airport?
East Bay Area for sure! Brings light to Places like Walnut Creek and Livermore.
How bout "Hell Hole International"? 😅
"Oakland International Airport" is just fine.
@@CMe-bk5ez And you know what is funny about all this is that SFO is located in San Mateo and the 49'ers stadium is in Santa Clara now. So much for naming things.
How about city of tupac Oakland international airport??
SJC San Jose airport is changing name now "San Francisco Bay South Airport" to be in sync with her neighbors 😂😂 LOL
San Francisco Mineta International Airport.
Honestly..? That’s ABSURD! I bet it has to do with 49ers Stadium and Silicon Valley. How foolish for San Jose TO GIVE UP THE PRIDE OF OWNERSHIP of their name. FOOLISH.
@@winkieblink7625that was a joke.
@@amols101 hope so!
They want to confuse people trying to reach SFO?!? Or Oakland!?
You don't say!
The Oakland airport area already has huge safety issues. Imagine landing here by accident and having to figure out how to get over to the peninsula as someone who’s not familiar with the area.
Oakland international airport should change the name to Ghetto international airport
Note that SFO isn’t actually IN San Francisco. Also, the real distance between SFO and OAK to the center of San Francisco is almost exactly the same.
How bout "IN & OUT INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT"?
How about ghetto Oakland airport-enter at your own risk.
Yeah.....that's a really horrible idea.
Many ppl will end up on the wrong side of the tracks
This is truly idiotic.
Why? The San Francisco airport isn’t even in San Francisco… it’s in an “unincorporated” part of San Mateo County which they named San Francisco (basically a fake address). Both airports are equally inconvenient for people traveling to San Francisco
To be fair, SFO also isn't "in" San Francisco city and it's at about the same proximity to SF from Oakland... SFO's in San Mateo/San Bruno
"The City owns U.S. federal trademark registrations for the marks “San Francisco International Airport” (Reg. No. 4,189,396) and the International Air Transport Association assigned airport code SFO together with SFO's Design Registration (Reg. No. 3,329,780). The City has held these registrations for such a long time that they have become ncontestable under federal law. That means they constitute conclusive evidence of the validity of the marks as well as the City’s exclusive rights to use the marks. Indeed, there is and only ever has been one airport in the United States that uses “San Francisco” in its name." --San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu
it's same with Livermore Premium Outlet change to San Francisco Premium Outlet
Let's all steal San Francisco's branding and name everything San Francisco. If your city doesn't have cachet, take from another city that does.
I remember that name change. The crazy part is that it works. You see a lot of tourists with luggages walking around the outlet.
Bait and Switch!
Why don’t they worry about all the crime, homelessness, lack of housing etc then this crap?
Keep trying Oakland LOL
Happy Oakland Fool's day. 😵💫
Imagine some overworked or confused new pilot is being told they are clear to land at “San Francisco”, but they land at the wrong one on mistake causing an accident….
I can see the Oakland criminals swarming the sidewalks outside the terminal doors to attack arriving and departing passengers
As someone into aviation, that won't happen. The ICAO code will remain KOAK, so no pilot is ever going to confuse the two airports.
@@RK-bx1by that’s good to hear.
What's more likely is someone is supposed to pick up a relative at San Francisco airport. And after an hour of wandering around looking for each other with multiple texts and phone calls asking "where are you?", they finally figure out that they are at different airports. This is the second-worst idea I've heard. (Only the USB full-speed, high-speed, superspeed debacle was worse at confusing people. If you're wondering why, "full-speed" is the slowest of the three.)
😂you know it's bad when OAK wants to change it's name to deflect from how bad all the crime is.
That's nonsense! Leave it the way it is. Why even change?
there once was a time when the Airport side of Oakland was not considered dangerous. I worked on Hegenberger 1987 - 2000. we never worried about our cars in the parking lot even on the night shift. I'm sure it is like a shopping center for thieves now unless they have put up some fencing. it's so bad now the Wal Mart had to close due to theft. Oakland will be like these cities back east where out of 60 homes on the block 20 are gone, another 15 are still there but burned to the ground, 20 are empty and falling down and 5 still have people living in them.
I lived in Oakland in the late 90s. Taking the shuttle from BART to OAK was pretty sketchy. But maybe the actual airport area was better.
This is so comical, and the Mayor is desperate to bring back revenue after losing two sports teams because of the city's inability to run the city.
Oakland is a great airport with very little delays. I am for the new name! It's right on the San Francisco Bay!
As a domestic business traveler I always preferred Oakland over SFO. Less crowded, better parking options , better weather hence less delays . OAK over SFO hands down.
Great points here. And closer if you live through the tunnel
Oakland is getting desperate to get people to visit 😂
SFO should consider suing them, if Oakland Airport decides to go through with it.
They should just call it Oakland Bay Airport.
Scott Weiner said find another way to turn things around. How about get rid of Scott Weiner and others like him and that will turn things around.
If air travelers in The Bay Area find this confussing, they never been to London. They are five airports with the word "London" in their name. For example, London Gatwick, London Luton and London Stansted.
exactly the English insanity everyone should avoid
Everyone I know (local and out of state/country) knows very well where Oakland International Airport is. Whoever heads the Port of Oakland should be fired for this name change stunt.
Giving all the airports the same name should make the BART ride more exciting.
What an absolute waste of time and money!
Why don’t you City Leaders worry about getting Oakland out from the mess it’s in first before anything else. #ffs
Having grown up in East Oakland, I was always ok with the SF airport being called SFO. Now, Oakland wants to be called SFBO. San Francisco Body Odor? Seriously?
I would hate to think that someone or some firm was actually paid to come up with this flea brain idea.
Why not "East Bay - Oakland International Airport"?
This is gonna cause so much confusion for people who aren't from the area.
Should ask Oakland for its rationale to change the airport name. If it is rational, people will listen, but if it is fishy, then no justification
Stockton tried to do the same a while ago, got shot down, it's not a good idea. Oakland should fix their own issues first (which, let's be real here, will never get fixed, main stream Oakland politicians won't even acknowledge there is a problem)
I think a good name would be let’s get robbed once we leave the airport in Oakland
In Belgium you have Brussel airport(BRU) near Brussels and Brussels South airport(CRL) near the city of Charleroi.
In crl there are only low cost airlines, so some passengers must be at crl and going to bru and missing so their flight in crl because crl is 1h30 from Brussels airport.
Are Oakland officials not proud of their city? If they want name recognition , they should keep the name of their airport.
NO WAY
Keep the name change the Oakland leadership, I was attacked on my way to the airport. A guy tried to smash my window when I was at a light. The window didn't break, and I drove off quickly. Oakland is quickly turning into another lawless city
If you heard air traffic anywhere around here, you’d never wanna add ANY confusion……
No confusion cause the ICAO code will remain the same KOAK.
Oakland should address its reputation and business problem directly, i.e. the out of control crimes, instead of sticking its head into the sands and pretending to be someone else.
Price and Thao have given Oakland such a bad make the airport doesn't want to be associated with them so they can increase business with the confusion 😂😂😂
Oakland international airport should change the name to Ghetto international airport
Transport minister should step in and stop the insanity.
There is no "Transport Minister" in the U.S. But there is a Secretary of Transportation. The Transportation Secretary does not get involved in minutiae such as the naming of an airport.
The San Francisco City Attorney has threatened legal action:
Cases involving likeness of two names in trademark name violation often revolve around the likelihood of confusion among consumers:
_McDonald's Corporation v. McSleep Inn_
In this case, McDonald's, the famous fast-food chain, sued McSleep Inn, a small motel, alleging trademark infringement. The court had to determine whether the name "McSleep Inn" was too similar to "McDonald's" and likely to cause confusion among consumers. Ultimately, the court found in favor of McDonald's, ruling that the similarity in names could lead consumers to mistakenly associate McSleep Inn with McDonald's.
_Nike, Inc. v. Mike's Sporting Goods_
Nike, the well-known sportswear company, filed a lawsuit against Mike's Sporting Goods, a local store, alleging trademark infringement. The issue revolved around whether the name "Mike's Sporting Goods" was sufficiently similar to "Nike" to cause confusion among consumers. The court found in favor of Nike, concluding that the similarity in names could lead consumers to believe that Mike's Sporting Goods was affiliated with or endorsed by Nike.
_Starbucks Corporation v. Star Buzz Coffee_
Starbucks, the popular coffee chain, took legal action against Star Buzz Coffee, a small café, claiming trademark infringement. The dispute centered on whether the name "Star Buzz Coffee" was too similar to "Starbucks" and likely to cause confusion among consumers. The court sided with Starbucks, ruling that the similarity in names could lead consumers to believe that Star Buzz Coffee was associated with or authorized by Starbucks.
_Apple Corps v. Apple Computer_
This case involved a dispute between Apple Corps, the multimedia corporation founded by The Beatles, and Apple Computer (now Apple Inc.), the technology company. The dispute arose over the use of the "Apple" trademark in connection with music-related services. Apple Corps alleged that Apple Computer's use of the trademark infringed upon its rights. The case went through several rounds of litigation over the years, with the final settlement allowing Apple Computer to use the Apple trademark for music-related services while Apple Corps retained the right to use it for its music endeavors.
_Victoria's Secret v. Victor's Little Secret_
Victoria's Secret, the lingerie retailer, sued Victor's Little Secret, a small lingerie store, for trademark infringement. The issue centered around whether the name "Victor's Little Secret" was too similar to "Victoria's Secret" and likely to cause confusion among consumers. The court ruled in favor of Victoria's Secret, finding that the similarity in names could lead consumers to mistakenly associate Victor's Little Secret with Victoria's Secret.
_Harley-Davidson, Inc. v. Hardy Davidson, Inc._
Harley-Davidson, the motorcycle manufacturer, initiated legal action against Hardy Davidson, a company selling motorcycle accessories, alleging trademark infringement. The dispute centered on whether the name "Hardy Davidson" was too similar to "Harley-Davidson" and likely to cause confusion among consumers. The court sided with Harley-Davidson, ruling that the similarity in names could lead consumers to believe that Hardy Davidson was affiliated with or endorsed by Harley-Davidson.
In each of these cases, the courts considered factors such as the similarity of the names, the similarity of the goods or services offered, the strength of the plaintiff's trademark, and the likelihood of confusion among consumers.
You Can't Lie About your Airport. Many years the sports team that now plays in San Francisco would not affiliate with the "Oakland " naming identification, opting instead to be called, Golden State, while clearly playing and doing business in "Oakland ".Attracting more Airlines and flight destinations should be done with quality of service, professional amenities and safe and secure surroundings, not through smoke and mirrors or lying.
"You can't lie about your airport", guess what, SFO is not in Sqn Francisco either 😂 the distance to downtown San Franciso from both airports is almost the exact same
It is confusing, but they have a point, the airport IS in the San Francisco Bay.
Fix the crime in Oakland, and you won't have to distance yourself from it‼️‼️
1:44 Cartoon character blown away when Wiley E Coyote sets off the TNT
Maybe SFO should change to San Bruno Airport.
The average airline passenger is pretty oblivious. They'll blindly follow airport signs. In cities with more than 1 major airport people go to the wrong one ALL THE TIME.
Oakland being Oakland. Cesspool of a city.
Oakland is a good example of the wrong ppl with money. Except the undeserving ppl living in that city. Hardworking honest ppl should be living there and the ghettos relocated to slab city.
They should call it “safer than San Francisco”
If that's gonna make Oakland less crimes, go for it
Bah. London has 5-7 airports. Nobody gets confused. Oakland International is only marginally further from downtown San Francisco.
London is served by several airports, including:
Heathrow Airport (LHR)
Gatwick Airport (LGW)
Stansted Airport (STN)
Luton Airport (LTN)
London City Airport (LCY)
Southend Airport (SEN)
The reason why there is no confusion is that only one of them is named London City Airport. There is no ambiguity.
We fly in and out of Oakland and SFO , I don’t think it really matters if you can think for yourself.
All you have to do is enforce the law.
This has to be some sort of a publicity stunt or something.
Losing the Raiders and A’s has for sure been tough on Oakland, but this is NOT the way to be “promoting” the city. If their idea of promoting Oakland to the world is by changing the name of their airport to start with the name of the region (which is named after another major city in that region), then I think - and have known for a while - Oakland needs some major priority-shifting.
The city of Oakland deserves better than this.
Just imagine if SJ Mineta decided to change its name to “South San Francisco Bay San Jose International” or Charles Schulz decided to become “North San Francisco Bay Sonoma Airport” 😭
If you're trying to lure travelers into OAK by "clarifying" that Oakland is located in the SF Bay Area, there's a bigger issue with the geographical knowledge of these travelers.
Should be proud of Oakland.
With all the massive problems Oakland has, this is what they focus on??? How about enforcing laws, arresting criminals and giving them prison time? How about that first Oakland?
Give people credit for not being idiots. Many cities have multiple airports all starting with the same city name. People know the difference between Washington Dulles Airport and Washington National Airport, between Chicago O’Hare and Chicago Midway, between Paris Orly and Paris Charles de Gaulle and between London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Stanstead, etc. And airports are often not even in the cities (or the same state) for which they are named: e.g. Dulles, National, BWI, Providence, and ironically for this story, SFO, which is not in San Francisco.
Shouldn’t this be considered cultural appropriation, and therefore toxic?
as a resident of San Jose, I would Oakland itself to be renamed East San Francisco
Also convenient to have your car broken into while coming to or from the airport when you stop for gas.
Oakland is probably concerned that people from all over the country and the world won't fly into Oakland since Oakland is the crime capital of California. Imagine flying into Oakland, renting a car and having the car broken into while it is still in the rental parking lot, or stopping at the In n Out burger restaurant of Denny's outside the airport and having your rental car smashed or staying in a hotel in Oakland and being robbed at gunpoint or visiting a relative in the Oakland hills an being pistol whipped or.... never mind, the Oakland Politicians who brought crime to Oakland don't care.
Even worse, robbed while you're sitting in your car or waiting at a stop light!
Oakland international airport should change the name to Ghetto international airport
East Bay Oakland
I even had a friend mistakenly book a flight to San José Costa Rica instead of San Jose Mineta. Even that's confusing and it's not even in the same country.
They are just trying to piss off the SFO management…..there has been quite a bit of competition between OAK and SFO in advertising recently. Undoubtedly they will end up calling it “East Bay International” or something like that.
They should just do a Tokyo does, one airport is for domestic travel throughout Japan, and the other airport is for international travelers coming into Japan and leaving. I mean, if you have major airports in the city, I don’t see why separating the travel would be difficult and it seems a lot easier on passengers
The only thing that will help Oakland is when they clean up their streets! Name change is only confusing and superficial at best
Sorry Oakland, I hop on BART to SFO and ride past the route to Oakland for all the reasons you clearly understand. You and the feckless mayor of S.F. think you can market your way out of crime at the expense of the innocent public. Shame on you.
It should be named Alameda county airport because it near Oakland, Alameda, and San Leandro.
Oh my god, thats ridiculous, instead of cleaning Oakland's mess they want to change the name.
This is absolutely ridiculous and just as corrupt as the city of Oakland. You are seriously going to try to trick people into flying into your airport instead of fixing your city and addressing the real safety concerns. Pathetic is all I can say.
It's not just passenger confusion that could be a problem. This could also potentially be confusing for Pilot's as well. Especially if they've never been to either airport before.
Nope, the code and frequencies from the towers woud remain separate, all of that in your flight planning before you take off. Modern aviation is very systematic, a change in the commercial name of an airport changes nothing for the pilots.
Oakland can’t handle more business! I was there yesterday morning and it was stressed to the max with the heavy use it was experiencing because of spring break travel. The employees were stressed out and snapping at everyone. Lines were out the door. Get there 3 hrs. early if you want to stand a chance of making your flight. And, everyone in the country knows Oakland and its proximity to San Francisco. The name change sounds like an intentional attempt at confusing travelers.
FAA would reject the change to any established airport call sign
"The City owns U.S. federal trademark registrations for the marks “San Francisco International Airport” (Reg. hegenberger corridor needs to improve first
Are they gonna rename the Bay Bridge next? I think “Golden Gate Bay Bridge” would be a solid option.
Seriously, please don't trick your customers!
The Warriors left. The Raiders left. The A's are leaving. What's left in Oakland besides the airport?
International travelers'll sue Oakland airport because people from outside may think that the airport's in San Francisco, but it's not.
The "original" airport SFO is not in San Francisco too 😂 both are almost exactly the same distance from the city
How do they have time to think of name changing an airport when CRIME is through the roof! ????
Oakland should learn from Dusseldorf’s Weeze airport issue, being totally NOT close to Dusseldorf…
Why don’t you just fix the real problem with Oakland.
