  • A beginning to end playthrough of Sega's 1994 3D light gun shooter, Virtua Cop.
Once again, 1990s Sega more than proved their place as the vanguard of arcade hardware development. Just like Virtua Racing and Virtua Fighter before it, Virtua Cop's graphics and sound are mindblowing for a game released so early. The game is short and a bit on the easy side (I'm just really out of practice - that's why it took me 9 credits :D), but the smooth, quick camera movements, hilariously Japanese-accented cries ("Don't shoot me!"), and the super-accurate shooting make this a top notch shooter, placing it well above older tradition games that just pan the screen side-to-side (Lethal Enforcers and the like).

Virtua Cop: the revolutionary game which taught us that well-dressed men in suits are, in fact, dangerous criminals.

I though Reservoir Dogs started that trend in the 90s? Black suits, sunglasses, black ties. It clearly influenced the creators of this game. The Blue Brothers in the 80s also has a very similar look for the main characters.

The arcades were a simpler time. I remember them fondly as a kid in the 90's. You'd often go to the seaside and pop into the arcade with money given to you by your parents (or money you've saved up all year to spend on holiday) and you'd go around all the different cabinets trying them out. But one of the things I really liked about them and what I miss about them was just how well gaming and socializing was done back then: you'd be stood there, playing a game like this one and one or two people would often stand and watch (maybe even wait for you to finish if they could see you were close to dying) or even ask to join in your sesh, and more often than not, the response would be something along the lines of "If you've got the money, mate, then go for it" and bam! Just like that, you've found a temporary companion. I know that online gaming kinda emulates this in a way, but for me it's never quite captured that same sense of comradery that you'd get in the arcades back then. Met some really cool guys and girls t these arcades just by playing these machines and cemented my overall trust in the wider community's sense of kindness, as opposed to the overwhelming trolling and animosity in the online community you would all too often encounter by comparison.

and somehow it was easier back then to make friends than it is in online games in todays time.... socialization has really changed not just gaming

I think Arcade were freindlier because in the Arcade, you have real people with real ideas right next to you. By contrast the internet is filled with lunatics that you cant see irl.

I went to a bar on a costume night dressed up as the Punisher and they had this cab, along with a couple others on free play. Imagine my surprise when I got to 25:10 and saw Kingpin after you open those doors.

Me too, a few minutes from where I used to live in northern London we had this place called the Sega Dome - it was a huge Sega branded arcade inside of a Japanese shopping mall (and for some reason attached to an Asda grocery store...?). They had this... I spent so much time and money with Virtua Cop and Virtua Racer!
If you wanted to play it again though, this recording certainly didn't come from an arcade machine. Search for a Sega Model2 arcade hardware emulator named Nebula. The mouse makes a reasonably accurate alternative to a light gun... ;) If you're interested, that is.

Virtua cop: where your standard issue police revolver is strong enough to take down a mecha suit and an attack chopper, but weak enough to need multiple shots to kill a guy wearing a two piece suit.

It depends on which body part the player shoots. Hitting the gun hand (a Justice Shot) instantly stops them without killing them. Head shots are also an instant kill.
