    Niiice Virtua Racing! When this game came out in the arcades I was completely blown away by the graphics/gameplay. Walking into my local arcade and seeing the 8x F1 looking cars lined up each with a big screen was a sight to behold! The line to play was legit 100 people deep!! Crazy to think how far we have come! Well done 16bit this is another gem :)

      It felt like a variant of Race Drivin' whose ads were definitely deceiving on the "fun factor."

    Time Warner's V.R. Virtua Racing is pretty damn impressive when we remember they had to share their dev kit with another team and didn't have access to the original source code. All they had was an arcade cabinet they would play over and over to match what they were making with what they were playing.

    Excellent vid on one of my favourites of all time. I didn't know about the Virtua Formula source being used in the M2 port. Great work as always

    I was just out of high school and a big Sega fan at the time when Virtua Racing came out. I really liked the arcade version and played the hell out of the 32X version. I was pretty much nodding my head in agreeance with everything in your video. You're history is accurate to how I remember it. You did your homework. Nicely done!

    The additional monitors playing a broadcast of the race from multiple angles with a commentator is a reminder to the importance of unique hardware. Software emulators (good as they are) can't always replicate the experience of original hardware. Stuff like light guns, motion controls, touchpads, ect..., aren't easily emulated.

    I was lucky to have a virtua racing deluxe arcade near home. It was really a something special in the early 90s. I also I loved the mega drive version, 15 fps did not stop my enjoyment... but after playing the switch remake I just can't play it anymore. Good times!

    Everyone was talking about Virtua Racing when it came out in arcades in 1992. The SVP also came with 128KB of RAM and would've been capable 20,000 flat shaded polygons per second or 3,000 textured and shaede, almost as many as some PlayStation launch titles.
    If SEGA had included Virtua Racing not as a pack in title but a game built into the genesis (System C2) for Christmas of 1993, they would've sold consoles like hotcakes, and SoJ wouldn't have forced them to make the 32X. And theyd have a two year head start on PlayStation.
    The $199 console would have 196KB of RAM, 128KB of VRAM, and be able to draw 6144 colors out of a palette of 98,304.

    • @GeomancerHT
      @GeomancerHT Місяць тому

      Explain how do you include a 100 dolars game as pack in and still sell it at 200?
      It is a really bad game, after the wow factor that fades in 30 seconds, you will get very bored. The SNES has Super Mario World, you might hate mario or platformers but that is a long game, huge value there.

    • @MaxAbramson3
      @MaxAbramson3 Місяць тому

      @@GeomancerHT The game would include 128KB of RAM, 3MB of ROM, 2 PWM channels, and the SVP, all usable by subsequent games. The game ROM itself was not that expensive.

    • @MaxAbramson3
      @MaxAbramson3 29 днів тому

      @@GeomancerHTThe SVP or SH2 were $30, and RAM was about $20 per megabyte at that time. HEWLETT PACKARD had an even more powerful PA-RISC 7100 for $20 and additional rendering hardware for $20 that rivaled the PS1. Genesis could've had a $60 LockOn that would make the Sega CD capable of beating most PS1 launch titles.

    Your video is good but it steps into misinformation territory when you get to the "end of the Sega Saturn", that was forced by the 90s staff at Sega of America and Bernie Stolar is on record in interviews admitting he felt that killing off the Sega Saturn to force a next gen platform was a "great idea" because stupid is as stupid does and somehow 90s Sega of America staff were able to persuade their bosses who hired them in Japan to made decisions that were the main reason Sega went to ruinous path.
    Fact about Sega Dreamcast is that it was Bernie Stolar who "felt he should wait almost a full year before launching it in the U.S.A. and elsewhere and exploit the 1998 Japanese launch timeframe as not important. Thus you committed a predictable misinformation step by repeating the tired mentality that "unfortunately Sony announced the PS2" or whatever...
    So let's make sense of that... why would Sony or Nintendo or whatever other hidden rival (Project X aka a shadow of Microsoft Xbox and of course Microsoft themselves by the year 2000 with their announcement which just made Sega look stupid and anyone buying Dreamcast immediately stupid underpowered) wait years for Sega to launch next gen hardware, claim to have ultimate power and sell their systems without a challenge? Crickets? Of course not... neither Sony nor Nintendo stayed quiet... Sony made official press releases in 1998 that they were working on PS2 and in March 1999 in Japan, Sony held a special presentation about the PS2, still the PS2 did not launch until March 2000 and later in October 2000 for North America and elsewhere, therefore Sega Dreamcast had since November 1998 to March 2000 in Japan and since November 1998 all the way to October 2000 for Sega of America's arrogant staff.
    Nintendo launched their N64 within months apart in the same year of 1996 so what Sega of America's management staff did was basically GIVE Sony and Nintendo all of 1998 and almost the entire year of 1999 and even there Bernie Stolar personally further sabotaged and placed the knife in the back of the Japanese company that hired him by forcing a $50 dollar price cut over the Japanese mandated $250 USD and forcing his way to sell Dreamcast at $199.99 or $200 USD... this created a $50 dollars LOSS per Dreamcast sold... another way of looking at it is you pay $90 to the factory for tires and Bernie Stolar sells them without your consent for $85... that is money lost... and if people do not buy game software in a significant number, your company is bankrupt which is what happened, nothing having to do with Sony or even Nintendo but definetly with Microsoft because their year 2000 announcement meant that Sega was automatically gonna be fourth place.
