AMP SHOOTOUT | Fender Deluxe vs ToneX and Quad Cortex

  • We were curious how a stock Fender Deluxe Reverb would compare to the Handwired Deluxe reverb. Then we got to thinking, i wonder how both of these compare to modelers versions of these classic amps. We had a ToneX and our friend Kenny had a Quad Cortex so, we had Kenny over and did some tests. To be fair we were not trying to be super clinical about this test. We wanted to just turn them on and start rolling, I'm sure with some tweaking we could get them to sound closer. But this was a fun test either way!
Let us know in the comments which one you would pick!

Honestly, they sound like 3 totally different things (Fender amp, QC & Tonex) which is great! Neither is worse than the other, but they are 3 different things.

This is not a fair comparaison because the tone x and quad cortex capture are not based on the amp sound. They are random capture so they are different.

Thanks for the Demo :-) My favorite was the handwired version amp and the ToneX. I still have my handwired 65 Fender Deluxe Reverb :-) Both can be used in different settings.

Thanks for watching! We sold the Handwired but man it was fun while we had it!

    Interesting comparison.
The problem here is that we have no knowledge of how the "captured" amplifiers actually sounded (note the difference between the two, in the room, Fender amps). It may very well be that the captures are true to the original amp. As an example, I once owned two Marshall JCM800 heads, that both sounded distinct from one another, one head sounded more "classic", having a warmer tone with a tight, percussive bottom end, whilst the other sounded more "modern", being a little more scooped in the mid-range, having higher gain, but a looser, less tightly defined bottom end. Combined with having two 412 speaker cabinets, each sounding different from the other, I effectively had 4 different sounding Marshall JCM800s.
I currently own both valve and solid-state amps, but given I no longer play professionally, I will most likely sell the valve amp and purchase the Tonex One or Boss Katana Go as a headphone/practice or record on the fly solution.
But I do hope valve amps are around for a while yet...

Great thoughts! Thanks for sharing your experience. I love amps and hope i get to keep playing them, I will always love the feel of a real amp, but the modelers do really sound great! This test was a pretty quick and dirty demo, we just pulled up stock sounds in both of the modelers, but I know that with more dialing in these things can sound fantastic!

I actually liked them all, just different. But I use a modeler also so maybe I’m just used to the modeled tones.

All the on-screen labels could be complete lies, and your responses would all be the same.
    Think about that 🤔

I'm surprised. The Deluxe Reverb Reissue sounded best to me ... but second place (for me) goes to the ToneX (all sounds considered). The Cortex was too hot / too much gain for my taste.

Fender 65 Deluxe reverb reissue sounds the best. Analog sound wins again. Forget ToneX, Helix, Amplitube and the rest. The real deal will allways feel and sound best .

Pretty much agree! the digital stuff is pretty helpful especially in small venues or if doing a lot of flying. But I always pick real amps if I have the choice.

The amps were very similar but I preferred the reissue as it was more open and defined. The cortex was too hot for the comparison. The Tonex was ok but not as nice as the amps.

Bro really dropped the ball by not turning down the gain on the amp sims

After listening to all 4. Deluxe Reverb Reissue is the sound I prefer the most. It’s cleaner and more open. The two modelers quite honestly sounded pretty bad, the quad quartex being the worst sounding to my ear. Honestly, I do not mind modelers. I’ve owned some and thought they were fine. As far as quality goes, I’ve never owned any of these 4 amps. I can’t tell you about how long they last or how they are in the room. Thanks for providing this sound comparison cuz I’m frankly ready to jump off the solid state train and get a nice new tube amp. This helped.

Yeah totally agree with you! And glad this video was helpful for you! Theres nothing quite as inspiring as sitting in a room with a tube amp and feeling the tone rather than listening through a computer. I think thats something that gets overlooked a lot. Sure they can sound close recorded, but tube amps can be way more inspiring. We didn't spend much time at all trying to tweak or dial in the ToneX or Quad, i know they can for sure sound better. But. it was fun to just plug in, play, and see which one sounded best right away. There were some of the lower register single note riffs that sounded great on the ToneX and Quad, but the big chords and brighter stuff was 100% better on the amps I think!

Who gives a shit? Write one song that does not suck. If you write a great song on a crappy amp that you got at a thrift store, then everybody who loves that song will try to go track down that same amp down at their local thrift store, and then online, and pay way too much, because the song was so good, people think if they buy the same amp, they will also write a great song. They won't.
