San Francisco tries out pop-up program to fill out empty downtown spaces

- With retail stores closing down, property crime concerns, and complaints about open drug use, downtown San Francisco is having an image crisis. But the city has an idea to pull its downtown out of the doom loop and bring businesses back. Max Darrow reports.
As a former SF resident. It shouldn't have gotten this far. You have to reimagine because you ignored your problem way too long through radical fees, fines, taxes and friendliness to crime group.
they try everything but prosecute criminals
maybe that's not the problem.? maybe clean up the streets, make em safe, make em bright? maybe? lol
no, no, it's much better to give unqualified people thousands of taxpayer dollars for supplies and equipment, not to mention months of free rent, to open an art gallery of toenail clippings.
Clean up the city and address the crime...no one wants to go to SF and risk getting assaulted anymore.
More applicants than openings.
Who dressed you this morning?
They shouldn't be trying to fix it. They should be embracing it. Celebrating it. Flying their political pride flags high and wide. Because this is exactly for what they've mindlessly been voting.
Damn right friend!!!!
Re-Open The Infamous Barbary Coast. We don't need Christians forcing there lifestyle in every single district. We need places to get high besides the park.
Just enforce the law and prosecute criminals and everything else will work itself out. Pretty simple concept.
Indeed. Unless your a democrat.
Free rent wont matter at all if your entire inventory gets trashed in one night, that wiped out 2-4 years of free rent right there unless you're selling fentanyl, thatll sell out before sunset.
Yup Deal with crime first.
i doubt many, if any, of these people know the first thing about how to run a business anyway. if they did they already would. i suspect the quality of 'businesses' will be along the lines of an outdoor art show open to any nutball with a collection of chicken bones.
@@ryanbarker5217 That's my thought too. The mall near me got a bunch of rich women to open a couple of "Women's Stores". Local artist that make candles, tie-dye shirts and skirts. You can open the store but keeping the merchandise from not getting stolen is a different story.
Ya right we just paid 38 dollars for few hours parking .😢
As a former resident, I don't miss the 25 cents for 3 minutes meter, lol.
Is the crime problem solved? ------------- not talking about it in the news doesn't make it go away
Just Make it safe for God sake 🤦
Sorry, but still not going to SF downtown until crime, drugs and homelessness are reduced significantly.
First thing is to get rid of London Breed & City's Ambassador. They can get paid more to stand around and do nothing. 😢
Waste of money 🥴
I worked on Market St. for a few months and had a street view of daily activities. Every day there was either homeless creating a mess or criminal activity or both. All the 'Ambassadors' did was stand around with notebooks, half of them on their phones.
The DAs
Get Woke
Go Broke!
Enjoy!
Start punishing and prosecuting crime. People who prey on others and don’t follow the rules do not deserve to be there threatening taxpayers. Find leaders that operate within reality, not Romper Room. Establish thorough rehab programs for those who want help. Some need to be medicated for their own safety. If you can’t be tough on crime get out of the way so we can get our city back!
Lower the price for the spaces, that would help drive market price.
SF relied so much of techie culture that it lost it's soul. Sure, tech is fine, but if it's the ONLY dominating culture there...then it's bland and boring.
This! They gentrified the crap out of SF in favor for techies and business like people and for what?! Just to ignore the overwhelming drug and crime here?? Now everyone gets to suffer
Put a fork in San Francisco.
It's the new Detroit.
Downtown SF is a dirty, dark, crime ridden, homeless encampment area. No one wants to go there anymore. Plus it's just way to expensive to park, eat or shop there if you can find any place open for business.
People not going to downtown if someone break down there car and not stop this crime . No business need in the sf.
Not going to work
SF you're imploding daily.
😅😅😅
Open shop and just wait for a pride parade or Chinese new year parade to sell to customers?
In addition, have you seen the restaurant prices lately??
You think that the inflation made their menus so expensive?
It is pure greed.
just stick the drug users in there. the city seems to not care anyway, at least it'll be some business 😂
"culture and diversity" - well drug use is pretty diverse, should work out!
Do like NYC did when Giuliani ran the city, put a cop or security guard on every street corner. I was there as a tourist and I felt really safe.
Agreed, but could never get away with that today in NYC. The woke brigade would have him up on charges and canceled.
Success will be defined the Criminals and how much $$ they are willing to lose.
Remove the high crime and homelessness and they will come.
That's not the Democrat's policy though.
That is what those empty properties should be used for - housing, addiction treatment, mental health care and job training for the homeless...
Why isn't the property value going down? This is becoming criminal and fraudulent.
i'd reckon for the same reasons stupid amounts of retail space in NYC sits empty for 5+ years and the value of that never decreases.
Because a corrupt government will not regulate the real estate and rental industry.
That’s what I was thinking as well. You would think rent will decrease due to the amount of crime and people moving out but no. I guess the land in SF is still high despite all those major problems.
I mean thats fine no one wants to be in SF anymore anyways, they can keep their sky high prices
free rent and get your stores and investments destroyed in one night by thieves.
If this was a normal business cycle, it would make sense.
But this is not a normal business cycle
Business leaving because of City and State policies
The city plan sounds like typical political cheer leading
Putting lip stick on a pig
SF = GOTHAM CITY🥴
❤SF
Free rent and money doesn’t address the root cause of problems 🙄
Hmmm...homeless people...empty buildings...$700 million homeless budget this year...hey, I've got an idea!
Youd have to tear down the multi million dollar builsing within a year because itd be a biohazard, just like anywhere you try to house unsupervised people who have mental illnesses that cause them to destroy and defile everything near them
Exactly.
Remove the bums and drug addicts then start enforcing the law. That is all that is needed to get back to boom times. Putting lipstick on a pig will not help. This is not rocket science.
Exactly
Remove? What are you proposing? The 4th Reich?. The solution is right there. Those empty properties should be used for housing, addiction treatment, mental health care and job training for the homeless
Diversity of business as long you're paying High business tax for SOCIAL programs.
Affordable housing for working class people❤
I don't live in CA but I love visiting SF in the past when it was booming. I even thought wow with the tourists alone the city must be raking in millions if not billions!! But now it's all but a memory! The city officials are to blame for letting it go bad this far. They didn't nip it in the bud, anticipate. They chose the homeless, addicts, criminals over the city. Now it is close to dead, very hard to revitalized when everyone & retailers are gone.
$106,000.00 a year to imprison someone in California. San Francisco was home to the Infamous Barbary Coast. You Christians don't need to control every neighborhood in America. People want to get high.
So all those homeless give them housing addresses and jobs they be at those shops in no time yet no they a problem
Right. But California government (all U.S. government, really) is corrupt and greed based. They don't care about resolving homelessness. But Gavin has a brilliant new plan - spent billions to house 1% of the homeless. He stepped out of his wine cave for a moment to publicize it. Then back to the business of political theatre and corruption.
I bet the sales force tower is half empty ..... thanks London b
It’s not a “tricky” situation. 😂😂😂 Your story does not address the obvious.
So? Summer has unfolded, what have we learned?
Oh, it cost millions more than anticipated and so far no one can point to a single improvement? You don't say!
As a SF resident for 10+ years and NOT a techie, I can tell you that this situation could have been easily avoided if not the corruption that is going on in this city. All officials are in the pockets of big tech and corporate real estate. There are no black people in SF, that's like the first thing you notice about the city. Right now the city is all empty, it's dead yet rent prices are insane still and tones of empty apartments just sitting there.
Yes.. try get your business started by getting all of your stock stolen immediately 😂
What business would be insane to still open up in San Francisco?
More people downtown, more targets of opportunity.
Why fight the emptiness of the store front? With empty stores SF will finally get zero cars on the road. Isn't that what SF residents want?
32 percent why oh and 1 third of Cali without jobs those people like shew shew. Homeless hire them give them money and cheap rent people will feel less stressed and the economy booms
It will get a lot worse for it to get better. The whole city was over priced and downtown suffered from bad planning by just being a purely corporate district. They needed to make it a mixed use are and the city needed much more residential development to reduce rent prices.
Another thing no one talks about is the fact that let’s face it these restaurant owners are charging so much for their food and I don’t blame them honestly but I’m not going to spend $16 on an appetizer that’s ridiculous
Well at least her pants are very stylish, that's what's really important...
This idea isn’t gonna work lol
The office space market is gone. San Francisco needs to focus on tourism. Clean, safe family fun. Office buildings converted to entertainment centers. Westfield mall becomes a water slide park. Better find a way to pay for the existing infrastructure before doom loop sets in.
Tourism? Who wants to come to SF and have their car broken into?
yeah, the last place i would take a child is SF.
ain’t happening
Rental income on office buildings pays enough for a vibrant city. Income from restaurant and waterslide buildings does not. Maybe gen Z ers will flock in to pay $1,000.00 for a waterslide session and serve each other $100.00 meatless burgers.
Tourism will only work if people feel safe.
I was just in Singapore I felt safe there. I was in Charlevoix Michigan and felt safe there. I was in Tampa Florida and felt safe there.
After each trip, I landed at SFO and took BART to my home station. Each time there were drug addicts under the influence of something. One snorted something into his nose and then took off his shirt completely and started shaking his head back and forth and looking very paranoid at the few "normal" people on the train. But he hasn't the only one, another fella walked in slumped over (a sign of fentanyl), and left his bike in the middle of the aisle for passengers to climb over to get out of the train. And these weren't the only two drug addicts on the train. There were at different times six, and the ratio of "normal" people to drug addicts on the train was at times 1-to-1. Take one trip to Civic Center on BART, tell me what family with kids will feel safe there?
Until SF says "enough", the doom loop is going to continue. My wife stopped riding BART several years ago due to safety, and I stopped recommending any out-of-state family come visit me for vacation. Instead, I now go visit them where it is safer.
so turn downtown to a uber like model?
Who wouldn't take free rent and a stipend? The idea that that isn't why people are interested in this program is ridiculous. Easy way to get some experience and exposure for their business. Then they can consider setting up elsewhere. What the city really needs is universal housing and that is what empty properties should be used for.
Fake news
😂😂😂😂😂
Blah blah blah.
I have been working in SF for the last 8 years. And this is the worst it has ever been. You just don't feel safe outside. I told my boss that I am going home an hour early every day or find a new manager. And that was 5 years ago.
🎉
yeah, not sure the problem is an image, it suffers from the facts of the matter. it's more than just those reasons starting off the report, it's also taxes, regulations, high rent, and high costs. literally the only predictable thing you can count on is the 'government' doing everything it can to work against your business.
Wrong. this has nothing to do with the government
This has to do with Faceless book and the People who said she is Not well come in San Francisco.
They blaming me for the Thing that I have nothing to
Do with the cruption.
I worked in sf, a decent job since mister
Frank Jordan was a mayor of San Francisco.
As a care giver.
Till a filthy less then woman who had some Dispute and Asklated. and this Cowered she is not even from sf, she came from East cost to sf, running Away from her husband.
and this the filthy less Then woman who did the Photoshop.
And I have her full name.
Maybe she's already in prison.
Then when I was saving money to be Delete that Affonsive photo by reputation Defender company
Just what Facebook got that picture as pronagraphy
And made Billions of Dollars for Them and for Their hookers.
And i filed report when I saw the Photoshop to Authorities and I have all The evidence.
I am so mad till this day.
Because these who was Against me and had riots
Against me I was walking Next to them between Them behind them and Non of them say hey what Happen here.
And the lawyers nothing But asking me from ten Thousand Dollars For the Money that I don't Have.
Is not good.
For Facebook think it is Over this is not over yet.
I will fight for my Reputation.
At least would be a good Luck. not only for San Francisco but the entire World.
I hate to break the news… it will take a while…. We got empty office space equal to multiple sales force towers.
As someone who has lived on 3 continents it is only in the US/ car culture, that I have seen this issue. The centers of all cities have always been the markets, the retail if you will, the headquarters... Post lockdown was a time for a downtown district to show why we should return to downtown.
Leave the car at home, take the train or MUNI .. People watching the park coma stroll the sidewalks and window shop,Have lunch outdoors, meet friends.
*Let the megamalls, strip malls, and big box stores suffer. Downtown and small business need your support!*
That's not the problem for San Francisco. The problem is that it's dangerous. Nobody wants to use public transit or go downtown when it's filled with fentanyl users.
I fully support this, pop ups usually have a loyal following so it’ll likely encourage more ppl to come to SF just for the pop up. It’s a versatile industry - art galleries (student & professional), retail, education (private classes / tutoring centers), food, drinks, etc. the possibilities are endless
Yup UNTIL they get robbed and cars get burglarized then it’ll all fail. The underlying problem is still there, deal with criminals FIRST.
i'd bet a dollar to donuts that the vast majority of them aren't what you'd call real businesses, else they'd already be doing it. i doubt most of those 900 people even realize they need a business license and have little if any interest in paying taxes.
it's absurd for the city to pay them thousands of taxpayer dollars.
Until the bums start doing drugs, peeing
, and throwing 💩
In SF you will see homeless without pants and police walk right past them. In the old days that wasn't allowed. If you ride BART regularly you will see disgusting things in the trains left by homeless. There are blocks on Market St. where it reeks of piss. If you are in the city regularly you will see shoplifting and most of those are not reported. This is what progressivism has reaped.
LOL k
opium den/fan-tan
The city has always had a homeless and drug problem on the streets but once people found out they can work from home rather than deal with that going to work, they stayed home.
