Great video Joe, very informative. I like the way you added the part numbers. UA-cam needs more people like you. In answer to you being ripped off. YES YOU HAVE BEEN.

Thieving gits! I have the same car, 2010 version and the wiring harness is a bit longer. I wasn't able to obtain a new one straight away so I removed the old one, repaired the frayed cable that I found then replaced it and the whole thing took me about 20 minutes. I'm not a mechanic.
I'm also not convinced the mechanism wouldn't work, maybe the same thing, a frayed cable in the harness? That's what the issue was with mine. If you try to apply power to it, it would probably work.
The actual mechanisms are pretty bulletproof. I would be claiming some money back, the consultancy fee is absurd too. Jaguar dealers have a bad reputation for this sort of thing and I often wonder how many car sales it cost the company.

I have this same problem. Wife came from work at 10pm and then start issue be visible. But she was able to close the car. 45 minutes After midnight sudenly alarm strike and woke up whole neighborhood. I was unable to lock the in that moment and left fob in the car to avoid self locking. Next day I have tried to open boot manually but nothing. Changed fob and this time key opened boot. Tomorrow I will investigate harness and connectors

Thank you. Great video. After a nightmare of not being able to access the boot, I managed to get in (intermittent fault?) and now the latch won’t close. The reversing camera also recently failed so suspect wiring loom. Can I contact you Joe. Live in Wokingham. Nick

Hi Nick, I’m not a Jaguar expert so any suggestions are just my personal experience or observations so not sure how helpful I can be. Private message me via LinkedIn and we can chat through that route. If you have watched any of my recent videos you will easily work who is the correct Joe.

I changed my boot loom in under one hour . Including covers off and on but I had no problem accessing my boot. I paid £54 for the loom. I won’t use dealers I try to do it myself with the help of this website. I don’t mind it taking it more time than the dealers .l wont pay £150 plus per hour. Better luck for the future. Regards Gavin

Very interesting video. My 2008 XF has just developed a fault where the boot when closed shut shows as open on the drivers display but the boot wont open using the boot release push button . The car wont lock using the electronic fob. At least the boot will open using the manual "emergency" key . I am reluctant to try to lock the car using the manual key in case the whole locking mechanism fails. Any thoughts based on failure of wiring looms and motorised boot lock opening devices would be useful

What you describe sounds like early symptoms of the wiring loom failure. As the loom is very inexpensive (for Jaguar) I'd buy it and rule it out. I should have done this sooner but I did not think it would short to a dead lock and prevent even the key opening it up. If you can access the boot, the replacement of the motor, lock and wiring loom is any easy DIY job (as shown). But I would try the cable replacement first. Thanks for Subbing to the channel :) Cheers Joe

As a fellow XF owner found this a very useful and informative video, shocking service from the local Jaguar dealer! Are you going back to challenge their bill as it would be interesting to hear their explanation for the fees! I have owned my 2014 XF 3.0 diesel for just over a year, bought it from an independent Jaguar specialist with a 3 year comprehensive warranty. Told to avoid the main Jag dealer and have just used his recommended independent workshop for the full annual service and MOT which came to £246. Hope you can now look forward to enjoying what in my opinion is a great car.

Hi Chris, as the failure was quite a big problem I felt I would try the dealer to see if they had experience of the issue and could fix quickly (with their know-how). As you can see I completed almost all the pre-work before taking it to sort it out. In the end they did come back to me and agreed they had charged double the labour, but I did get JLT customer care involved, which I'm sure helped them to get to that conclusion. Yes I could have gone to an Indi but it's such a nice car even at this age I wanted it to be done properly.

Hi Joe thanks for taking the time to update me on your xf and good to hear you have had some success with the dealership. Can understand your wanting to remain with the main jag dealerships but in my experience going to a recommended independant saves significant amounts and does not compromise the quality of work. However there are good and bad workshops in both. All the best Chris

How does the wiring affect the manual key? Surely if it's not electronic it should still open the boot.

Hope they are helpful and understanding. I think my video shows my experience. They did halve the cost of labour in the end as I pointed out the work I had done and they seemed to charge me twice for the work. I did involve Jaguar Customer care.

@joewoodford I worked with a FORD Dealership all Times for replacing Parts under Warranty were FACTORY BOOK TIMES, Changing a door catch/lock to outer striker was Half an Hour, this includes stripping door down & reassembly looking at your Jag Lock min charge is an Hour in Garages now , in my days it was Half an Hour. IT's a Half Hour job. but can guarantee it was an Apprentice Mechanic , find out if it was Apprentice Hourly Rate , or Time Served man's Rate.

I have this fault at the moment. As it's a known problem with the harness you would think that JLR would have found a way of bypassing the harness to release the boot thus avoiding the damage to the mechanism.

@@joewoodford9428 Fortunately I only recently purchased the car from Carbase in Weston-super-Mare who, despite it being a 'clearance' car. gave me a warranty and organised an RAC warranty for major parts. I had already reported a fault in the instrument panel sounder for the indicators, seat belt etc. and advised them of where they could send the panel to be fixed. I advised them of the boot fault and I accessed the boot by removing the rear seats so I could clear the contents for them to get to the boot latch. They had the car for less than a week and fixed both problems under the warranty, replacing the latch, soft close motor and sent the instrument panel to be repaired. The value on the paperwork, which I think they pass on to the sales site, was well under £250 including Labour.
