A hard strap doesn't necessarily mean you can't lay down with it. Some headsets I've run have had good and sturdy enough hard back straps that I could actually lay down on them and be comfortable. And I think that's the answer for where to put the battery that has the least drawbacks. Balance is important. The weight of the headset matters so much less if it's well balanced. Most hard strap designs haven't seemed to consider laying back on it, but they could. They typically make no attempt to have a low profile and even place the adjustment knob exposed right in the center of the back of it such that this is what would be laid upon. But there's nothing stopping a hard backstrap from being designed as low profile as possible with adjustment controls in a protected position. Such a design could be comfortable to lay back against even hard surfaces that would normally be uncomfortable, like a tree for instance. Or an economy section seat on an airplane.
It sounds like you're talking about 3D conversions at 7:40 which I really hate because they look wrong but James Cameron converted Titanic to 3D and it was one of the best conversions ever so I'm willing to give this the benefit of the doubt considering his involvement. The ability to watch any traditional media in 3D is a long held dream for 3D movie enthusiasts like me but it still seems far away, let's hope James Cameron and Meta's adavanced segmentation ai models lead to this dream becoming true
As the future of digital social interactions I think new headsets need to have sensors to correctly represent subtle facial expressions in software. Give us eye tracking, mouth tracking and correct limb tracking!
I expect that David is right that Android XR isn't aimed at competing with gaming on Meta headsets, but supporting PCVR gaming on it would be such low hanging fruit. Sure, most people wouldn't be willing to spend $2000 on a VR headset for gaming alone. But if they're already interested in buying this headset for its other uses, picking up gaming as well is surely a value add! If their intent is lets connect to everything and offer the opposite of Apple's closed only ever supporting its own ecosystem approach, then it certainly would seem to make sense to include connecting to SteamVR. And also why wouldn't Android XR try to pick up standalone gaming, too? If they've got a platform they want to displace Horizon OS, go after it all! Whether or not they're targeting low end Quest prices. Going after the larger non-gaming market, they could potentially sell a lot of these headsets anyway even at a higher price. I just don't understand why these companies should leave VR gaming on the table when they're making headsets that wouldn't need to go much further to pick up that market, too. Like imagine if PCs had ignored gaming and only went after productivity usage when they were new.
If the Samsung headset doesn't come with controllers in the box, in cuts out a whole slice of game content and will make it Daydream V2. Unless it's a massive success (and why would it be?), Google will cut and run as per usual. A small split user base is a dead user base. Standardise and it might have a chance.
1:46:30 Apple is doing this right now with the Vision Pro. They already have the tech, and the ecosystem of Spatial FaceTime, Messages, Spatial SharePlay, etc. The only current limitation is the price of the headset. That won’t always be the case. Once the price of Apple Vision Pro headsets drop, Apple will already have these features ready to go, plus have years of experience in a future-more-refined-version of visionOS.
Apple cover the general purpose computing. Meta covers the gaming. Google is just another general purpose computing late to the game so yeah I don’t know if they’re gonna make it.
Love how david described this week's topics as if he was about to dive into an all you can eat buffet lol
I hope that Android XR hmd's have DFR as a toggle option directly in their OS.
Great show today 👏👏

The Immersed Visor will almost certainly run Android XR as well

SONY needs to add VR patches to their PS4 Pro game library....
what about surreal controllers for avp

Meta will be the one to die off. They faced the same problem when they tried to do PC gaming and take on Valve.
