- Ruaidhri O'Connor joins Will Slattery to discuss the Ireland team announcement and Andy Farrell's decision to drop Peter O'Mahony for the second Test against the Springboks.
The Ireland captain has been named on the bench, which could be his final international appearance although Ruaidhri isn't ready to write O'Mahony off just yet.
It will be a big moment for Caelan Doris, who captains Ireland on Saturday, while elsewhere James Ryan is given a starting berth in what is a massive game for the second row.
Ronan Kelleher, Stuart McCloskey and Garry Ringrose are all in line for important opportunities this Saturday in Durban also.

Joe Mccarthy needs to step up he looked very promising at first but has regressed in recent games
I feel like he's been told to play this enforcer role, and he's taking it up the wrong way. Giving away a few silly penalties and needs to go back to what he is good at. His maul defence can be incredible. Needs to focus on where he offers value; maul and lineout defence, carrying and creating holes in attack by drawing 2-3 tacklers. Combine that with improving his handling and he could be very good

Christ Ruaidhri, stop going on about POM. Maybe, its a strategy to have him make a big impact when he comes off the bench. The Boks will have 6 world class players coming off the bench, no one is saying they 'were dropped'.

Nah, man, c'mon, he's struggled in the Six Nations, received several yellow cards, his jackling has dropped, his enforcing defensive tackling, strong line breaks; he was bounced twice rather unceremoniously by Damien. His body isn't able for it, and as resilient as he is, as combative as he is, there's a hole in his spot, therefore a chink in the armour.
I don’t like putting refs down but Pearse needs a talking to after his performance.

I am so glad that you guys did not make excuses of a tired Ireland team and focusing on the positive stuff. I do believe the Springboks was lucky. If Ireland was have as good as they was in the six nations they would have won that game. I think the game play of the Springboks is not balance at the moment. They are a team that normally dominate up front and then create chances. They hardly mauled, they hardly scrummed and they did not drive over the advantage line with pick and go. If they play like that again they will loose. I think they have to play up front and spread when it is on. The Irish must play the game like they played the last 20min of the game.

@@eoinmiller5620yes both teams missed chances but looking overall at the game, the Boks did dominate large periods of play and with more accuracy, could have been well in front by halftime. Ireland came back strongly second half but they could have been 15+ points behind at halftime already.
2nd half was a lot more even and ebbed and flowed, largely due to errors by both teams. This weekend should be better from both hopefully and should result in a cracking test.

This is a very good Irish team. Feels a step up from last week with Ringrose back.
POM is at his best when dropped. James Rayan has been off it for the last 18 months so he needs to reinvent himself. The line out will be targeted big style so don’t expect miracles in the next test. Ian Henderson’s influence on or off the pitch is missed. The test has shown new players are needed. Some of the current players are obviously at the end of their Irish terms.
POM is past his best is what you meant to say. Even at his best he couldn’t compete against this SA back row. Put him out to pasture.
Nigel Owen looked at the James Lowe try and said exactly what Ruaidri said about the TMO intervening in rucks. Owen thought the try should have stood and that the TMO should not have involved himself. Of course we did deserve to lose that game but still it would have been nice to have been level at that stage. If we cut out the easy penalties maybe we can hang in there with them on Saturday. Ireland used be a very disciplined side one time. What happened there?

I would've removed POM and brought in Nick Timoney. His backrow stats outpaced Beirne and Baird in the first half of URC season. He has exploaive power. The reluctance to introduce ameliorations sooner is irksome. I think Timoney instead or a 6/2 with Cormac or Cian would be lethal. I know we need Blade, so we couldn't bring in Big Stu if it was 6/2, which I orefer Chu Chu Stu, so, Timoney should've been in.
If we gonna scrutinize everything then we can also bring up the neck roll on Marx that went un noticed

I don't mind the refs nitpicking but has to be consistently done. They missed so many tackles off the ball and blocks, I thought I was watching American Football at one point. No Bundee is massive, I see a lot of missed tackles in midfield.
If, as you say, benching O'Mahoney is a bit of a slap on the wrist for the first half performance, do you think that would have any affect on the team morale?
This guy, like I know a stopped watch is right twice a day, but is this guy ever right? It looks to me like PoM coming on late is to counteract the total lack of direction in the final quarter last game.

Don’t forget that there is a different coaching team for Ireland! They get the players to perform at a level that would win finals and also have access to a better 10 than the one always picked by LC.
