- On the latest episode of The Left Wing podcast, Luke Fitzgerald, Cian Tracey and Will Slattery select their Lions team to take on Australia next summer.
With Andy Farrell set to coach the team down under, the lads speculate as to how much that will benefit the Irish players.
Luke think Jack Crowley could well be the starting out-half while everyone agrees that it will be a big season for Garry Ringrose.
I think the easiest way to pick this squad would be process of elimination... start with Wales, who makes the squad? Then Scotland, then England then Ireland. Otherwise it'll be the Irish lions with some Brits sprinkled in for flavour...
I think over the next 10 months a lot more English players will come into contention. Might be less Irish dominated than we expect.
I wouldn't know if i should pick a mule or a donkey to fill the positions you mention , but i know that in rugby , a little bit of thinking can save an awful lot of pushing.
When do they get picked?. Surely it depends on how well the Six Nations go for the respective teams.
Lions is nonsense. It made sense decades ago, perhaps. Unless it was against a combined southern team. And agsinst australia who the individual nations would beat without breaking a sweat makes it more obvious than usual

Itoji will lose you a game with his constant penalties more for his ego than the team. Look at England's record over the last 4 years 2/5 in the six nations for the last 3 years, and they have just won more games then they lose this year 3/5 Itoji is at the heart of this problem.
He's old and lazy now too. Constantly disappearing during games.

Itoje on form can also win you the game . ' constant penalties ' can you generalise any more . Which top locks have a lower penalty count ? Save three penalties in the last test in NZ his discipline at and since the rwc his penalty has been low . His impact in big games has been huge especially against the fop sides , the Boks, All Blacks and Ireland
@patrickchilds2987 It's like a gambler thinking they are beating the house. For every one he gets away with he gives away 2 or 3 unnecessary daft ones that lose a game. I mean look at England record over the last few years. This was the first time in years they won more games than they lost. At the highest level, that's the difference between winning and losing. He tries to get away with it all the time, and it costs his team wins. The Lions have 2 or 3 other second rows who are as good or better, but don't do that stupid shit.

How hilarious and bizarre would it be if Frawley was picked as Lions 10 while being backup utility at Leinster.

Did you even listen to it? Luke picked Jamie George to be captain over Doris and Itoje in the 2nd row. He went with Jack Willis at 7 and Beirne at 6.

They can, but every team in the world will struggle against SA.
Weirdly they are the best scrummaging front row the Lions can pick. England Scotland and Wales have all been demolished by the Irish front row this season.
Crowley over Russell at 10? Not so sure about that. Crowley has been great this year, really grabbed it by the scruff - Russell has a lot more to his game IMO
Schmidt will eat Russell for breakfast. He isn`t good enough defensively. By the time of the Lions tour he will already be well on the way to anchoring his type of game plan with Australia that will target the 10 channel.
@@brianboyle2681 Would have to disagree there Russell is one of the best tackling outhalves around unless you are talking tactically? Then maybe you have an argument but there's no other 10 in Britain and Ireland who's a better tackler then him

Zander Fagerson over Furlong, Tadgh isn't anywhere near where he was it would be completely unjustified to pick him and how could you justify picking Crowley over Russell? haha I'm an Irish fan and there is no way you'd pick Crowley over him.
Russell is definitely a better kicker, but to work he needs to be a team player which I’m not sure he is. He tends to lead Scotland around the park making them a bit one dimensional in attack
Crowley is a serious operator and is progressing nicely. He'll be there or thereabouts for the starting Lions shirt.
Agree about Furlong. He has a lot of mileage on the clock. It would probably prolong his career with Leinster and Ireland.

@@daireharlin181 nothing but no individual player wins, it’s a team sport. We can’t question his talent. He is a legit 10, and is more experienced and consistent than Crowley.
