First rule of camping: Make a checklist. Second Rule of Camping: Check everything on the list at home before you go out Third Rule of Camping: Go with the Flow.... I used to keep a lil pop up tent in my car to get around the rules about sleeping in your car. Much easier to put up and take down. GREAT VIDEO
I spent 5-weeks on the road in my Model 3 from Oregon to Florida to Maine and back, sleeping on a 6" trifold mattress at various campsites. It was golden!
If we do more camping, a foam mattress is definitely going to be a solution. I would still like to balance comfort and how small it breaks down for storage. Thanks for watching.
We use 2 carry on size suitcases for various stuff and these double as supports for under the pillow end of the mattress, works great and they both fit under the boot floor
One thing I learned while sleeping in my 2021 Model Y at the campsite was; my air mattress was too thick about 11" so next time I will use a 4-6" memory foam mattress so I will have a little more elbow room to toss and turn.
@@TheJonbonesjones I have the mega mat duo 10 (4” thick) and love it! It fits in so many cars and has an R of 9.5, so it’s very cozy. You will love it and know it’s money well spent. Awesome video. Thanks! My wife and I and on another occasion my son and I have done exactly what you did and we loved it. We also have the tesmat privacy shade. FYI, We have a trifold mattress that fills perfectly and is much more comfortable than an air mattress. Thanks. Great to see the extra space the Y has for camping compared to our 3 for camping and also the access through the rear hatch. When camping in our 3 here in Australia, we remove the rear seat before we leave home to make the bed completely flat. I’ve also cut some five ply sheets to shape to support the mattress and fit up around the rear of the centre console and against the back of the front seats with the seats moved forward. That way we get a perfectly flat very well supported very long bed with maximum storage space below the head end of the bed. And in the Y that rear room would be cavernous! The Y hasn’t made it here yet ( right hand drive) but it will be very popular once it does.
Well done. We screen between front seats, and have celotex cut to rear windows. Stealthier, and a bit easier. Car seems to use about 800w/hr in camp mode. We put shoes in garbage bags. Before we got our Y, we did this in our 3. Won't be car camping in THAT anymore.

I use one of those dog hammocks in my model S. Just strap the front over the headrests and lay the mattress on top of the the hammock with the seats down and it prevents the bed from sinking between the seats. Push the front seats forward and get almost an extra foot of space at the bottom so your feet don’t get crammed.
this might seem like a crazy question, but can you leave your windows closed while on camp mode. How does it work. please explain if you are aware , and what did you do ? great video , thanks for posting

Hi, I really like your content. One question I have for your setup is actually the Baymax seat head cushion cover in your Model Y. I am wondering where did you get this and how can I get one too? Thank you so much!!!
Yes. Just like when you are driving. 100% control all night. By default, it pulls and conditions fresh air. You can turn on recirculation if you want. Thanks for watching!
I am extremely excited for my Model Y. I plan to travel around a lot 2-3 day trips and it seems that this car camping option is perfect to save a bug and still being comfortable. Although I worry a bit about bugs/ mosquitos if I have the doors to long open to set everything up. Does anyone have a good solution for that?
I always have the same issue. What I do is I try to prepare everything before getting to the place and then when preparing the last things I switch off all the lights as much as possible so they dont get in :D

I was going camping in a remote area and the campsite had a 15amp outlet for slow charging. I took my Champion 2500watt inverter generator for the heck of it. I thought I would see if I could charge my Tesla from the generator. It did not work, the car recognized that there was no true ground from the car to the generator. It turns out there was an electrician camping with us and he said the Tesla will not except the generate until I install a dedicate ground wire from the generator to the electrical pedestal. I did not have a wire so I was not able to test that therory.
This is good info - thanks for making a video about it. I'm curious what was in the lower electrical box. For RV campsites 240v/50a is very common and would have netted you much higher charging rate. Roughly 9.6kw versus roughly 2.9kw. More than 3x the charge rate might have gotten you back to full for your drive home with no Supercharger stop along the way.
I don't remember that the lower box even opened. Went back to the video and it kinda looks like it would. I never opened it. I don't think a 50A service was available at this campsite but I don't know for sure. If there was a 14-50 connection under that lower panel, I should have used it. I really don't think it was an option... I'll keep tell myself that. :) Thanks for watching!
@@iowatesla Hmmm. Must be. Either that or maybe 3G Vs 4G? A while back I know I read something regarding general motors and their telematics system… Using something that was older, yet more reliable since that was more important than speed.
Question from SE Iowa: How is the white interior working for you ? (I want to order a Y a year from now.) By the way, by choice, I sleep on a Walmart inflatable queen sized mattress at home. I have a 1" thick foam topper on it and a padded mattress cover over it all. It is on top of my platform bed. I love it. How long was the mattress that you used ? Was your mattress custom designed for the Model Y.
Hello from East Central Iowa! I love my white seats. After 10,000 miles they are holding up great! I've hit them a few times with a baby wipe but that's it. Look as good as the day I picked up the car. As for the mattress, the one we got is 76" long and it is pretty much a perfect length. It wasn't designed for a Tesla but fits fine. There is a link in the description to the air mattress if you want to check it out. Thanks for watching!
Yes. I'm sure it will. My issue with a Dreamcase is twofold - cost and size. I'm sure it sleeps great but it can limit you if you carry a lot of stuff. I also don't camp enough (yet) to justify a better bed. Thanks for watching!
Excellent video and very detailed thank you so. Much. I do have a question. ( someone might have already asked ) being that you only had 20% battery when you got there did your climate control cut off at some point ? Or was the charging able to stay ahead of the 20% shutoff for camp mode?
That was a real concern. Fortunately, the TT-30 connection was enough to keep the air conditioning on while charging a bit - so it stayed ahead of the 20% limit. If I had gotten there under 20%, it would have been a problem. Would had to keep everything off until I got up to 20 and that would have taken a while.
I camp in the model 3 and I have to lift up one of the two seats in the morning to be able to sit upright. Model Y seems to have more vertical space just not quite enough. Might be a little better in the model X. Anyway,,, I’m gonna wait for my #cybertruck
@@iowatesla I waited four days after the unveiling. I placed an order for my tri-motor and I ended up being number 225,000. So I am expecting them to get all the kinks ironed out and then make my perfect car next year😆
@@iowatesla You can buy a 30amp adapter at Walmart for $10. There's 2 type of adapters for charging the Tesla. There's the real compatible adapters that Tesla charging system will recognize and set the proper amps for charging and those kinds of adapters cost a lot more. The cheaper adapters you will need to set the amps on your display. Example a 30amp adapter along with your standard Tesla portable charge, set your amps at 24 amps. Using a cheap adapter and not setting the amps manually for the correct amps could cause a melt down or damage something.
Dear Iowa Tesla guy: thanks for this informative video. We drive Tesla model 3s days and are not likely to do any car camping but I was talking to someone who may be interested. In our part of the country I suspect most camping sites are unimproved. We are also at 7000 feet elevation so it gets pretty cold in the winter. Do you have any information on how much charge you would use overnight to keep the car warm?
I don't yet. However, it is my experience that heating the car is more efficient than cooling it. I would think things would be better in the winter as far as camping goes. Will probably verify that this winter. Thanks for watching!
Tesmat has a mattress that should fit better and deal with the top end issue (I’ve not used one). Air mattresses are too thick, and limit head room. The floor mat can be removed, placed on the ground for shoes, the slid under the car in rainy areas. See hotel Prius links on you tube for many other small car camping tips. A reflective tarp placed on the roof and held in place with magnets can offer privacy and sun protection.
Why does Tesla camping seem to give the impression this is something new? 2 of us did a 2 month tour of Europe in a Volvo XC70 many years ago. Didn't have the benefits of camp mode but wasn't too bad. Didn't camp every night on trip but the odd night or two in a lodge or motel was enough to take care of our laundry needs. Wish Tesla or somebody would produce a proper station wagon along the lines of XC70. Don't need a truck or SUV just a sensible SW.
I'm sure people have been sleeping in their car ever sense cars have been produced. What makes a Tesla interesting is that it can provide climate controls without the need for a gas engine to be running. This seems to be the novel feature. Thanks for watching!
You actually didn't answer all the questions, in fact my main question was not answered. How long will it run on camp mode from a full battery charge to the 20% minimum assuming your not plugging in at a campground or elsewhere. .
I did the math for me. All rough numbers. I started at 20% and 11 hours later I was at 47%. It was charging at 3kW. This means in 11 hours, I should have added 33kW to the car. I only added 20kW. This means that the A/C consumed the rest (13 kW). Over 11 hours that means I used about 1 kW per hour of running the A/C. So the night without power would have been about 17% of the battery used. I would have needed to start with about 40% at the beginning of the night to ensure that I didn't hit the 20% limit during the night. Hope this helps.
@@iowatesla It does help somewhat and I know battery usage will depend on how hot (or cold) it is outside and how much temperature you want differentiated in car. Also, some electricity could be used for cooling or heating batteries while charging so probably not a good exercise to do the math. I read some places. I'm more concerned with two scenarios... 12 hours overnight in cold weather, sat 20 degrees out maintaining say 65 degrees inside and then 90 degrees warm weather keeping the car at 75 all while unplugged. I dont have a Tesla yet but will put the deposit down when they announce the van.
Thank you for these calculation, I got similar numbers. I think I used 12 hrs because you said you plugged in at 8 pm and then said it was 8 am at 47%. But not a big difference. Bottom line: seems the AC used about 1200 watts per hour which is a bit more than I thought it would. Can ugh share the overnight temperature? Know that and your interior setting of 67 might help this engineer know what it might be in other situations. Good video!

119v on your display. Not 240v
@@nexu2010 What do you mean? I get 240v on my screen.
Pretty sure Tesla uses AT&T
We were in mountains of NC and phones didn’t work but Tesla did.
Great video (as usual). Thanks very much!!!
Thanks! My wife has AT&T. Could be that the cell antenna is just bigger on the car.
Seems like the Dreamcase would solve a lot of your issues if you keep in keeping on camping :)
@@iowatesla thank you
You should park the car with the front in a higher position to fix the angle of te bed
Great idea! We are going camping at the end of the month and if the site has a slope, we will take advantage of it!
T-Mobile gets service on that campground.
I camp in the model 3 and I have to lift up one of the two seats in the morning to be able to sit upright. Model Y seems to have more vertical space just not quite enough. Might be a little better in the model X. Anyway,,, I’m gonna wait for my #cybertruck
Hopefully you won't need to wait years for the Cybertruck to finally get here. Thanks for watching!
@@iowatesla I waited four days after the unveiling. I placed an order for my tri-motor and I ended up being number 225,000. So I am expecting them to get all the kinks ironed out and then make my perfect car next year😆
The sticker's on the front seats look dope, can you please share the link for purchasing those
Thanks for watching! You can find an Amazon link to the stickers on my website at iowateslaguy dot com.
Have a link to that TT-30 adapter?
Just added it to the description. Thanks for asking. It's a little expensive but it does the job really well. Thanks for watching.
Who doesn't download movies before any trip? Plane car bus train download movies. Lol I'm a dad so I learned quickly
My kids are grown. It appears that I lost that skill. Should have remembered. Won't do it again. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the video. I'm sorry if I missed it but how tall are you?
Thanks for watching! I'm 5' 10" with plenty of space.
Make a profil on your Tesla called campmode :) just a pro tip
Crappy part is you can't use mesh window screens to keep your windows down due to no bezel around the window
That would be helpful. My wife hates bugs in the car so we open it for the minimum amount of time.
These are very helpful tips. Will try them out when I camp next. Thanks for watching !
That is a noisy park LOL... It would have drove me crazy.
It sounded more noisy in the video than in real life. Upgraded my mic setup after this one. Thanks for watching!
Go Cyclones!😎😎
Where did you get the Baymax decals for your seats?
Great information. Eager to get my Tesla so I can try camping.
I got them from Amazon. You can find a direct link on my website - iowateslaguy dot com. Thanks for watching!

Camping inside the car hmm i prefer my caravan sadly that would reduce to much of its range.
It works in a pinch. Thanks for watching.
Great video for when I take my Jeep camping. Thanks!
Thanks. I appreciate it.
Good video!
2 words: Disbursed Camping! (for peace and quiet away from campgrounds). But only do if have plenty of range left!
As I get more confident in my camping ability, I might give that a try. Thanks for watching!
