That's what it's all about. Sportsmanship, and new friends even from the opposing team. These young ladies are a credit to the game, and inspiring to watch.
The girl in the white shirt is so sweet-- even when they were walking out, she seemed concerned with Sara and kept glancing back/over to make sure she was okay.
those young ladies parents should be so proud. They raised wonderful, selfless daughters. Imagine what the world would be like if all our children did the same kind of things...I hope they enjoyed their trip and it nurtured their growing friendship.
i play softball and i found this very touching. we need more people like them, a lot of girls are just in it to win when the point is to have fun and be fair.
what people don't understand is that the score of the game was 2 to 1 and sara's team was losing before her 3 run home run. it was a play off game to get to the championship. if her teammates had touched her, she would have been out or a pinch runner would have been put in and it would only be a 1 run single. This is an AMAZING thing these ladies did. it's true sportsmanship. they risked a game for their team to help out someone. an athlete, just like them. who deserved it.
We played a team last night and It reminded me of this video. There was a girl (much older than the others) screaming at them. Any time they would make a mistake she would cuss them out or hit the fence. It was a really sad thing to watch. It made me think of this and how much sportsmanship they have. We need more players like this these days. Truly an inspiration. THIS IS WHAT REAL SOFTBALL PLAYERS LOOK LIKE.
Wow, not only did they carry her off but they actually carried her to the bases so she could get credit for the home run. That's pretty fantastic sportsmanship and it's great to know that acts like this still happen out there.
This is a very touching story and I used to play softball and i know that none of my teammates would have done something this caring to another player ever
It's good to see when people realize it is better to be a good person than to win a game. This is what Grantland Rice meant when he said, "It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game". These girls & their team played it the right way.
Sharazod Oh my gosh, I watch Ellen often in the morning, cause it makes me feel good. With health issues it is not easy to find a bright spot in my day. Watching the players take the injured player around bases just made my cry. Tears of joy. There is good in the world. Thanks Ellen for bringing them to us and putting a smile on the millions of people watching😘🥰❤️
TAMARA GURIEL: When I watch these videos about Sara, Mallory, and Liz, I CRY EVERY TIME, then I start the video over again and WATCH IT FROM THE BEGINNING AGAIN! It takes me around TEN TIMES to get all the way through to the end, because I'm crying out of JOY! 😊😭🙌
I actually clapped myself when I saw them carrying her. This is how we are meant to live. I am filled with light having watched this. Better than drugs!
These young ladies are the true meaning of beauty on the inside and out…. Great sportsmanship…. Shows respect for the sport shows respect for your opponents and shows the integrity that you have when you do an act like this….
Hi just had just recently played in the little league World Series in Portland Oregon and this wass VERY inspiring to me as a softball player and a person:)
These woman are competitive athletes and understand there are rules to the game they love and must follow. They dealt with it beautifully and we got to hear the inspiring story! They got a free vacation and who knows..the three of them might be life long friends BECAUSE the coach and ump didn't intervene.
its touching because softball is a sisterhood, i played for 5 years, whether you were the popular girl or completely unpopular it didn't matter when those cleats hit the field, that all was out the window because we were there for one purpose, to play, if you had beef with someone, you handled it by using that energy to knock that ball so far out of the park they never find it, but if someone got hurt, everyone felt for them because the fact was, it could have been any of us.
AWESOME...I'm glad that they didn't leave her there. I also suffered a knee injury so I know what that pain feels like and I have issues with it to this day.
They had to ask the umpire and the coaches because they weren't sure if they were allowed to do that in a game. The rules stated that if the girl's team touched her, it would not count as a homerun. The girls on the other team were unsure if that meant that if ANY player touched her, it would not count. The umpire and coach decided that, since the two girls were not on the same team as that girl, it would count as a homerun.
Short stop since I was 8 years old. This is why I love softball. Such a team game and there's competitiveness but so much respect on the field. No matter what jersey you're wearing. Incredible story. We have a billboard with their picture on it in Columbia, MO. Love driving by that every day.
oh, annnnnd this was Sara's first EVER home run in her life. even as a senior in college. her teammates didn't touch her, not because they didn't wanna lose, but because they didn't want sara to lose her only home run, especially since it's the last at bat she will ever have!
This was this girl's first and only career home run, the coach told them not to touch her because she knew that Sara really wanted the home run to count.
I love this story. I've wanted to go to Central Washington to play softball for about four years now. I have met the girl that won Player of the Year! :)
Three awesome young women who clearly had good parents & role models did well. I'm glad the rules have been changed so that a pitch runner can be put in for an injured player without risk to the player or either team. Great woman. well done.
ACL is a ligament, not a tendon and it's not behind the knee it's inside the joint capsule - but yes you're right this is amazing and it's so nice to see
Them two people are real heroes to me ,I want to say thank you ,winning a game is importing to do but love from your heart to help other people is a great thing to do anyway may god bless you a lot, you two women made that other ball player happy
I saw this on the local news when it happened. Then it became national news. I attended WOU decades ago and attended many softball games. I've coached competitive softball for years and can honestly say there is "competitive" and there's competitors. "Competitive" people care only about the score and will never understand the character, class and good sportsmanship exhibited by the two Central competitors in this moment. Vince Lombardi was wrong. Winning is NOT the only thing. For the three of them to become fast friends and honored the way they were shows that the color of the jersey is irrelevant but the strength of the heart is what matters in sports. Mallory (1st base) has been the head coach at Central since 2010 which not only means she was a good person, she was a very good player/coach. I'd be honored to have a woman like that coaching my child. We all need more people like these three in the world. I'll cheer for people like this every time over a box score.
She was at the end of her softball career. That was her first and only home run ever. Had her team intervened it wouldn't have counted as a home run. Then, it would've been her only home run ever, that didn't count. That might've been looked over if she had a life-threatening injury; she didn't. Sara worked hard as a college athlete, and Sara wanted to finish. I find nothing wrong with anyone's priorities in this situation.
Geez everyone calm down. She didnt LOSE A LEG... her ACL which are the tendons behind the knee and is probably the worse injury to a knee was torn. Read the rest of the comments about the college rules. These girls did an amazing thing and quit swearing. My God grow up.
Well they always say don't touch someone even if they are not in sports... im sure they called the ambulance but the other team wanted to help her around the bases. News Flash, the ambulance are not on scene at a college softball game, I'm sure they were in route. The point was that the opponents helped the girl around the bases, most wouldn't do it, they'll let her lay there until the EMTs get there.
they don't say "don't touch someone". You might not turn someone over who might have a bad back. But you do take care of people. You do go out and see what is wrong, and more
anytime someone puts someone else before themselves, anytime someone can say, in this situation, screw winning in fact we're going to give them the game win they deserve, it's heroic. you don't have to run into a burning building to be a hero.
I looked for information about Sara and found that she is THE SOFTBALL COACH at the college she played at! The girls that carried her have similar jobs at their colleges!
I play softball rules are rules people are complaining more about a how the coaches and teammates can't touch her. They're not seeing that these women are amazing role models for anyone. The main message for anyone watching this is that Just because there not on your team/side you can help
Some of the posts are missing the point not discussed on the Ellen show. This was the girl's first ever home run she had ever hit in all her days of softball from t-ball to high school and college. her teammates did not want to help her NOT because they didn't want ot lose the game, but because they they didn't want Sara to lose her home run. Look at the other video showing the actual home run.
I had to watch it twice to fully understand this, but when I did get it, I have to say that this was really true sportsmanship. At first I thought the coach was a moron for telling everyone not to touch her, but then I got that he did that because Sara herself wanted to stay in the game and make her first and last homerun count. But because the rules said that her teammates couldn't touch her there would've been no other way for that wish of hers to become reality. I love how the opposing team members decided to give her the game. After all, they could continue playing while she may be permanently off the field (or whatever a softball "field" is called in game terms). Applause is deserved.
ONe thing: while she was screaming in pain did he know she wanted to stay in the game.... at that point in time, it was not clear other than a hurt girl is being left alone so the score could count. YES, i agree with everything about sportsmanship and these girls were awesome. Just a little surprised no one rushed to her aid before she could articulate anything

I made an appointment, waited a week, went to the appointment, and was immediately scolded fo waiting a week. After explaining the staff didn’t inquire as to when I hurt my knee, all ?!?! broke loose.Never again did I wait to be asked when the accident happened, either for me or my family. Kudos for the other team.
Ellen please help me your are beautiful person Thank God for you Ellen I love your show a lots call me Ellen Bartlett Texas wait for you call me if can
I agree. It's excellent sportmanship, but I've seen things like this too. Maybe not in softball, but that's because it isn't that big here in Europe, but in other sports.
I must be missing something here. I mean, she was screaming in pain, but never mind that. Winning is the most important thing in life. I can't even believe there's a rule in the first place that makes helping an injured player a penalty. What a sadistic game.
It's "would HAVE cried". When it's spoken it SOUNDS LIKE "would OF cried", but, written it IS "would HAVE cried. I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just trying to be helpful.
David Rock It drives me nuts when people make mistakes like that! Lose, loss, loose, and, an, etc. Especially knowing that there is an edit function available! 😱
I seriously hope the coach and umpire watched this and heard the description and feel really stupid! "What was I thinking?!" should be running through their minds!
that's not the point, she wanted to finish the game because her team would win if she did. She played all her life but finally hit a homerun, but tore her ACL so she couldn't move. Her coach asked the referee if they could help her finish as she wanted, but the game rules said her own team are not allowed to support her around the bases, so the other team stepped up. Of course anybody could help her of the field but that wasn't what she wanted :)
They DID help her off the field....the long way. She was going to have to be helped off either way, so might as well "touch 'em all" while they're doing it. Just took a few seconds longer to get off.
I tore my ACL in a softball game and I wanted to finish the game. When you're on the softball field, that is your number one priority.. the game. In plus, that was her very first homerun, and her last year playing. Don't be so quick to judge.
I think what some people are thinking is that "in the moment"", the girl likely was just in pain, was not thinking about finishing the game. That might have come later and and after the fact thought but in the moment when it occurred, she is likely just in pain.
The college softball rules says a player or a coach cannot touch their own players. She had hit a homerun to win the game but the other players picked her up so she could touch each base and have the homerun count... listen to the story :)
She was helped. The point is, per the rules she couldn't be taken from the field and still have made a home run, so she HERSELF would not let them simply take her off the field and substitute a runner.
that was really nice of them, the world needs more people like that. would've been hilarious though if they carried her and put her down right before third base..but as a joke obviously. :)
No one stopped anyone from helping her. She could've been helped off the field and had a pinch runner put it, but per the rules she wouldn't have been credited with running the bases and thus her only home run would've been nullified, which she didn't want.
No, this wasn't a don't touch someone to avoid further injury thing at fucking all. They said don't touch her as to not mess up the game, that was all it was about and that's sick. It has nothing to do with whether an ambulance as coming or not, it's the fact that somebody, a human being, is hurt and the game trumps checking to see if she's okay.

They were so cool that they didn't regret losing the game
"The ball went over the fence. She deserved to get her homerun". True class and sportsman ship.
At least they realized it was just a game and it doesn’t matter in the game of life. Pretty cool ladies.
I wish I was rich enough to pay for their college education. These are the type of people we should have in high places.
this is a amazing story! i play softball in adelaide, south australia and to see something in a sport that i play and love is amazing!
True Sportmanship!
Professional athletes could learn something from these amazing young women!
there are amazing people on this earth they are so sweet
ACL is a ligament, not a tendon and it's not behind the knee it's inside the joint capsule - but yes you're right this is amazing and it's so nice to see
The epitome of sportsmanship!!!

I discovered this video through a devotional . A very good lesson!

This had me in tears.
good on them for ignoring protocol and helping someone out. seriously
One of the greatest moments in American sports history. Up there with the Gibson homerun.
that same thing happen to me at my softball game.. I tore my knee rounding to 3rd base. The pain is unbearable....
Now, THAT'S what I call friendship.
She was at the end of her softball career. That was her first and only home run ever. Had her team intervened it wouldn't have counted as a home run. Then, it would've been her only home run ever, that didn't count. That might've been looked over if she had a life-threatening injury; she didn't.

Thats just so inspirational i wish more people are like that
It was the first and only home run she ever hit in her career too!
Always gives me chills
This is an object lesson in "character."

WOW incredible story, they are absolutely right, it was the right thing to do. As you always say Ellen be kind to one another.
I looked for information about Sara and found that she is THE SOFTBALL COACH at the college she played at! The girls that carried her have similar jobs at their colleges!
There were two winners in that game....nobody lost!

Ellen that is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen I love your show and how big of a heart you have keep up the amazing work
why can't i like comments on youtube anymore?? anyway this was amazing. Very inspiring!!
same thing for me on most video clips...I can comment on some and like on some but most are blank
Some people put a time limit on video comments now. Shortest I've seen is 4 months

That's extremely great sportsmanship!
This is beautiful. It was a wise decision that was in the best interest of what was deserved. Im so glad you were the players there. Bless you all
Great young ladies.
They deserve the yacht and dinner, this is true sportsmanship!
Yeah, but I worry about those rat bastards at the NCAA who might have taken away all what they have accomplished because they got these nice gifts. Since it happen so long ago and I (and maybe you) haven't heard about any NCAA infractions being violated, then hopefully nothing bad has come of this.
and this is why i've been a softball player since i was 8 :o) it's like a big family.
Ellen,
I understand her pain, I bent down, at the same time as stretching my upper body up. Yup. Twisted the knee. Since it was my first accident, I didn’t know the rules.

Right now, there are 86 people who don't like this. Those 86 will NEVER be as BadAss as these young LADIES.
I agree. It's excellent sportmanship, but I've seen things like this too. Maybe not in softball, but that's because it isn't that big here in Europe, but in other sports.
i dont even play softball and this made me cry
I must be missing something here. I mean, she was screaming in pain, but never mind that. Winning is the most important thing in life. I can't even believe there's a rule in the first place that makes helping an injured player a penalty. What a sadistic game.
Did you watch the video? It answers your question quite simply.
if they had tried to help her, or even touch her, she would have been called out and the homer wouldnt have counted
This is SPORTSMANSHIP! Vince Lombardi would of cried.
It's "would HAVE cried". When it's spoken it SOUNDS LIKE "would OF cried", but, written it IS "would HAVE cried. I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just trying to be helpful.
It’s not like he’s the only one. It’s even wrong in the description of the video.
David Rock It drives me nuts when people make mistakes like that! Lose, loss, loose, and, an, etc. Especially knowing that there is an edit function available! 😱
Yeah.... you can hear it rip too..... I've torn mine so badly that they had to get a total knee replacement.
I seriously hope the coach and umpire watched this and heard the description and feel really stupid! "What was I thinking?!" should be running through their minds!
Norrya Parsa snowflake bitch
that's not the point, she wanted to finish the game because her team would win if she did. She played all her life but finally hit a homerun, but tore her ACL so she couldn't move. BINGO!!! And she got her wish, her one and only "tater".
if you played you would understand. it is what it is. petition a rule change if you are that passionate about it.
She was helped. The point is, per the rules she couldn't be taken from the field and still have made a home run, so she HERSELF would not let them simply take her off the field and substitute a runner.
Absolutely.
that was really nice of them, the world needs more people like that. would've been hilarious though if they carried her and put her down right before third base..but as a joke obviously. :)

She said herself, she wasn't thinking of anything at the time except the pain
Gosh when they touch her foot to the base... T_T. sighs.
Greatest moment in any sport, ever…..
It's a pity women's sport isn't more popular cos we miss seeing great people like this
If you want to win a match, it should be because of merit, not by default because someone is too injured.
I teared up
In our modern era of orange fascism, we need as many stories like this that we can get.
they deserve that trip
