That's because Ripley was written to be good, PERIODT. She didn't have to qualify her actions with "bcuz I'm a woman and girrrl pwer!! " or "I had brothers who taught me!" -- she takes a crappy job as a loader because she loses her license to do more prestigious work and then her crappy job as a loader actually comes in handy here. AND they didn't overdo it and make her a million times better than the marines because "magic woman power" -- she has to learn how to use a gun, learn how things work. Somehow James Cameron got strong women right in the late 80s and early 90s in a way that many people can't get right in 2020!

I loved the worldbuilding aspect of Alien and Aliens in terms of the prop department. They really put effort in on even the subtle barely in shot stuff that sell the scene as taking place in a real location and time period. Alien had all the corporate logos on even the beer bottles, and old run down equipment showing the crew were pretty much just space truckers working on contract for shares, Aliens really looked like it could be Colonial Marines equipment with professional looking rifles and gear but also well used utility machinery and uniforms, apart from the Lieutenant who had an unnaturally pressed uniform signifying his lack of combat experience outside of simulations.

    1) Ripley's request to help isn't demanding. It comes off genuine. Not about showing off being a female bad ass. It's about being a functional member and perhaps doing anything in her power to ensure everything goes well.
    2) Doesn't shit on masculine men to make a point. The men are outwardly polite if a bit disbelieving at first. Perfectly natural.
    3) Ripley actually demonstrates competence. Love the understated no fuss way she gets it done. Very attractive to me as a man.
    4) The scene has a terrific payoff towards the end of the film when she battles the Queen.

This scene was so damn clean, let me count the ways. Ripley was mentioned to have gotten a job running power loaders in the scene where Burke came to recruit her for this mission. It shows Ripley's character because the only reason she got on to the power loader was because she didn't want to be sitting around doing nothing so A) She doesn't want to be a load and B) she's antsy because she knows there might be Xenomorphs down there and needs something to take her mind off of it, and finally it flawlessly sets up her knowing how to use said power loader in the finale battle. 👌👌👌 Perfection.

It also show's Ripley's nobility. Ripley was a high ranking officer in her former life. Ripley is an ambitious, capable, talented person that all her life has pushed herself to the top, that's why she got where she was. Life dealt her a setback but this scene shows how her inner nobility and talent will always come out, really fleshing out her back story with only one line of exposition: "I have a class 2 rating."

    • @RiccardoCagnasso
      @RiccardoCagnasso Рік тому +4

This is actually deeper than that. Ripley is an officer. A person used to give orders and mange other people. When se finds herself without a crew, she begins to manage herself like she's her crew. She finds a task that se can handle to be responsible for. It's not only attitude (I don't want to be idle) but mindset (someone is idle - me - and should be put at work because putting people at work is my job). This is very careful character design and understanding of human psyche that will develop gracefully in the rest of the story when Ripley starts to get more and more command duties and decisions when marines start to die.

Think of it as the merchant marine. In peace time, they haul cargo and civilians. "You think so?"
Ripley strides confidently to the Loader, straps in, activates the machine, all the while maintaining eye contact with the two Marines, who glare back.
Ripley walks forward with the machine, almost dancing inside it. Another loader is passing, but Ripley reaches over and takes the giant case right out of the other loaders hands!
Another Male Marine Loader Driver: "Hey! She took my case!"
Ripley strides back to Hicks and Apone triumphantly, the music swells heroically.
She drops the case at their feet, and they jump back, startled.
Ripley jumps out of the loader holding the keys in front of her.
Ripley: "Guess nobody told you. I'm First Officer Ripley, sole survivor of the Nostromo."
Ripley drops the keys into Apone's palm, then walks away.

A modern "strong female character" would have smirked at them at the end, instead of the truly strong "where do ya wannit?" with just a hint of a smile, saying "I'm competent," not "I'm showing you up." Ripley did not lose any femininity, and the men didn't lose any masculinity here. They realized she was very competent and not just an 'advisor', and they appreciated her skills. She didn't act like a stereotypical 'toxic' male and drop the box on their feet and flip them off. She proved herself capable, they were laughing at themselves, not at her, and they all grew closer because of it. Mutual respect, that's what it's about. Modern movies get it all wrong. Sarah Conner, Ellen Ripley, Eowyn, etc. They were strong women who didn't need to become men to be strong.

One of the things I love about this movie is that it was able to show a strong female character, without bashing and belittling men in the process. It didn't shove woke, feminism in your face. Ripley was not a strong female because she was better than a man, she was strong because she was strong.

And all she had to do is prove she belongs by showing mastery of one thing. In under a minute.
Not beat a guy clearly bigger and stronger than her. Not put some guy down by demanding respect she hadn't earned.
      "What can I do?"
"I don't know, what can you do?"
      *Does it*
      And that's all we need!!!

This was such a good flick...late 80's my brother and I had Aliens, Blues Brothers, and RoboCop on a VHS long play tape, and we would literally both wander in at some uncommon hour from our separate adventures, grab a late night/early morning snack, put the tape in, and watch...repeat the next night wherever we left off...get to the end, rewind and start all over...spent a summer or two doing this lol.

Still one of my fave scenes. Not just the "powerful woman" trope, but the way Ripley was so low-key about "I told you so" and the way the two extra-tough marines work right along with er makes it a feel-good moment in a movie full of tension... plus there's the amazing payoff later in the "Get away from her, you b*ch!" scene. :-)
