Josh, I know you take a light-hearted approach to history, and I know you work your tail off to research for facts. And you are self depreciating, but don't ever underestimate how important your work is and how good you are at it. You keep doing what you do, and we will be here to support you all the way.

I listened to Josh last night telling me more about the amazing Kit Carson. I'm from Washington State and I flew to Denver and now am driving with my brother to Tennessee, about ten minutes after we left this morning I was talking about the podcast and we crossed into Kit Carson county. No shit I had a short laugh and since this was still in que I figured I'd let y'all know of my experience. Thanks Josh for your help with my life's pleasure, truly.

Josh, my brother, I'm so glad that you covered this critical bit of history. I live just 20 miles south of Lake Berryessa and my High School was named after Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo. I grew up in an area bordered by the East Vallejo "Finger Hills" north of Suisun Bay in the east, the Carquinez Straits in the south, the San Pablo Bay in the West and the Napa Valley in the north. The Spanish called the area "Nueva Eden" (New Eden). The area was covered with nut trees, fruit trees and ubiquituous edeble plants and game (then in the 1920s thru the 1980s it became a bulwark of the U.S. Navy and the natural flora was continually destroyed until now). To this day, the area has the best and mildest climate on the planet, rivaled only by Kobe, Japan. . . . Just Sayin' (It might look like a shit-hole, rife with very bad "woke" individuals, but the climate is still epically perfect ). . . The conquest of California began and ended in my backyard (in fact, some of these instrumental areas were commandeered by the likes of Janis Joplin and a plethora of 1960s icons at a place known now as "Olompali State Historic Park" [unfortunately, most of the historic buildings at that park burned with the love-generation - including the buildings inhabited by our hippy icons). The majority of "American" settlers in Spanish California didn't give a damn who was controlling the territory at all (whether they were formerly subjects of the confederacy or disillusioned transplants from the north or the Californios) until Castro issued his edict of naturalization or expulsion. Most Anglo settlers didn't want anything to do with any "national government" of any ilk. This ideology was maintained beyond the end of the civil war as was apparent by Californian neutrality during the conflict. (G. Washington said, "Avoid foreign entanglements" - and the majority of Anglos in California took that to heart.) The greater point of the Bear Flag Revolt/Rebellion was that all faith in the "governing powers" had been lost. During the entire Bear Flag Revolt conflict (which lasted less than two weeks) only 80 people lost their lives (MOST of which were unnecessary) - and that was mostly AFTER Fremont or Stockton's troops got into the fight. The rabble of the Bear Flag Revolt won California - and then had it ripped out from beneath them by a more powerful governmental force (just as the White Russians had their victory ripped from them by the Red army some 60 years later). There was VERY little racial tension in the exercise of the Bear Flag Revolt. In fact, Generalissimo Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, the Spanish Governor of most of what is now Northern California was VERY sympathetic with the plight of the "anglos" and when assaulted at his home in Sonoma (his "Petaluma Adobe"), he welcomed the rebels into his house. ...After which action, he found himself hogtied and watched as his entire wine cellar was consumed by the anglo insurgents (we Californians LOVE our wine...). There is a LOT of nuance in this instance of history . . . much of which you glossed over (and I don't fault you). For instance, Catholicism has a HUGE role to play in the way the Californios and indigenous peoples took part in this period; the Anglos being mostly Protestant of one kind or another. For centuries, the Native Americans in the area watched their fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons and daughters BURNED ALIVE or otherwise brutally killed for some perceived infraction of Catholic dogma. The last known (or recorded) instance occurred in Northern Mexico in 1890 when a man who refused to work on a Saturday was garroted to death in front of his entire pueblo (The record of this Spanish Inquisition execution can be found in the archive at UC Berkeley, California). None the less: THANK YOU for your sincere telling of the story. I love you, Josh. What you do is so friggin' important. Keep it up, my brother. (By the way [and TOTALLY OFF TOPIC], as a 15 year-old Boy Scout in 1981 at Camp Silverado (just a mile south east of Carson Pass a half mile from the north shore of Silver Lake and in the shadow of Thunder Mountain, I heard what could ONLY be identified as an inhuman sasquatch vocalization. I think it's interesting we don't hear more about those types of encounters in the "old west".) Anyway, I love you, Brother!! Great job!! And: THANK YOU!!! (And dammit!! Even AFTER you clarified the pronunciation of "Fremont" as "Fray-mon", you insisted on pronouncing his name as "FER--MONT"!! WTF?? LOL [Love you, brother].) . . . Anyway, to my understanding there were only 80 or 84 deaths during the entire struggle for California. Can you validate that number? (Also with regard to the above and in a sincere attempt to exonerate you (lol), having lived here for the VAST majority of my life, "Fremont" has been pronounced "FREE-mont" for as long as I can remember. . . . But then, "Buffalo, New York" was originally called "Beau Fleu" ("Beautiful Spring" in French) and I doubt there's a single Buffalo native who fucking knows that. . . . Shit gets lost over over time. It's our job to find the truth . . . And despite the neglected minutia, this was an AWESOME historical report!! Thank you, Josh!!!

I love what you do, Josh. Don't stop doing it . . .

I sometimes like to play a little game I call Historical Kevin Bacon.
Although both being frontier types, I kinda doubt that Kit Carson ever crossed paths with David Crockett. Just as I also doubt that Crockett and Daniel Boone ever ran into each other. If they ever did, please site to me the historical evidence of such an encounter.
There must be levels of separation connecting all these famous gents. For instance, I don't have any documentation perse in front of me to prove the following supposition, but here goes:
I strongly suspect that Crockett personally knew Andrew Jackson. They didn't like each other, but they likely did have face to face encounters with each other from time to time. Since Jackson was a US president, he is likely to have had face to face encounters with his successor Martin Van Buren. They didn't like each other either. Nevertheless, it's traditional for every American president to have at least one face to face encounter with his successor, when the new president is moving into the White House and the old one is moving out. That makes a bridge of various provable connections on several levels between Andrew Jackson all the way to Abraham Lincoln.
Abraham Lincoln personally new John Fremont. They didn't like each other either. Even though they were both instrumental in the founding of the GOP.
Fremont personally knew Kit Carson. And oddly enough, they actually did like each other.
This is the closest Historical Kevin Bacon like connection I could draw between Kit Carson and David Crockett. If anyone knows a shorter route, please comment about it below. I would love to read it.

    • @JimPack-jy3rr
      @JimPack-jy3rr 2 місяці тому

After a little more research, I have come up with an even shorter, more direct route linking David Crockett and Kit Carson. And here it is. As stated before, David Crockett personally knew Andrew Jackson, they were at political larger heads almost from the get-go. And as such, they didn't like each other. Imagine that Andrew Jackson, a well-known hot-headed duelist, had a talent for making enemies. Who would have thought? Jackson as President was also at political larger heads with one of his main generals. General Winfield Scott. They had some rather angry and insulting correspondence with each other, which could have led to a duel were it not for the fact that Jackson was President of the United States. And presidential dueling was not actually a thing back then, or ever was. Obviously, Jackson and Scott didn't like each other. So they must have been personally acquainted with each other. There's that contention.
Fast forward to 1861, and Winfield Scott is now Abraham Lincoln's top General, since Bobby Lee didn't want the job, being more loyal to Virginia, than he was to the federal government.
So Scott and Lincoln personally knew each other. Whether they liked or didn't like each other, I don't know. Possibly not, since Lincoln didn't seem to like any of his top generals until Grant.
And as stated before, Lincoln personally knew and disliked John Fremont and John Fremont knew and actually did in fact like Kit Carson, which is not surprising, since by all accounts, Kit Carson was a very amiable fellow, well liked by practically everybody. Unless you were an Apache or an Navajo, and maybe a Mexican soldier stationed California. Then you might not care so much for him.
So there is my much shorter Kevin Bacon like connection between David Crockett and Kit Carson. Truly only six degrees of separation.

You have excellent audio. This is not true of all UA-camrs. Evidently, quite a bit of work goes into various aspects of these broadcasts to get sounds and content correct. Thanks

You forgot Kit Carson's graphic testimony of Colonel Fremont's masacre of Native Americans as they were conquering mexican California. Even Kit was revolted to his credit. Be well.

I used to use Audacity to lower the “pitch” of high vocal songs so I could sing them!!
Other than that, I understood about 79% of what you said there at the end!! Lolol 😂
I clearly have always known that your voice was not AI.
AI make ALOT of grammatical errors throughout the video. I’m not sure why but it does happen…ALOT!
Alright well, back to the WWX Videos!!

Why do you all skip over Commodore Sloat, who captured Monterey, raised the Stars and Stripes, and claimed California for the US on 7 July?

    • @WildWestExtravaganza

Great question! So the video you're commenting on is part of a series on Kit Carson. When I write my scripts is always a struggle to not go off on too many tangents and to keep things at least somewhat focused on the topic at hand.
In the case of Commodore Sloat, you're absolutely correct. He did capture Monterey and claim California for the U.S. He also was in poor health and replaced by Stockton (who I did mention) after just three weeks.
If I were to do a dedicated video to the conquest of California, or even just the Bear Flag Revolt, I most likely would have included Sloat. As it were, since this was just about Carson, I didn't feel it necessary to include him.

You should consider doing videos on other people and culture or just the same time era in the usa.....like abolishionist cassius clay. The stuff he did in his life is bonkers. He lived to be in 70s or so, old. But that wasn't from lack of people trying to kill him or more fitting word, assassinate. More then often they ended up on the deader side. Im talking mobs of pro slavery people to him dueling.

Cassius Marcellus Clay was a legitimate badass. Born into one of the richest slave owning plantation families in Kentucky. Not only did he secure Russia's support of the Union during the Civil War, and was also one of the most vocal abolitionists, but later on he divorced his wife of 45 years (she was sick of his infidelities) and as an 84 year old married 16 year old Dora Richardson (who was possibly as young as 12)....and still kept ticking for another 11 years. His children and grandchildren were so upset that he reportedly installed a cannon in his front doorway to discourage anyone interfering with the wedding. 😂
