John Colter: The FIRST Mountain Man
Вставка

- Considered by many to be the first Mountain Man, John Colter came west with the Lewis and Clark Expedition. When they headed back to civilization, Colter instead chose to stay behind. He’d live with the Crow tribe and go on to be the first American to cast eyes on the Teton Mountains, Colter’s Hell, and what’s now known as Yellowstone National Park. Later, as a fur trapper, Colter would survive numerous close calls with the Blackfeet. At one point, he’d be stripped naked and forced to run for his life. What was Colter’s early life like? Was he really a Ranger under Simon Kenton? And how would Colter finally go under? #history #wildwest #western

My kids just got a John Colter history lesson instead of a bedtime story tonight. We all loved it.
That's awesome
I'd have sure appreciated it more myself
Still remember the old man reading Robinson Crusoe to me as a kid
Your channel is pure gold man. Would love to hear about French-Canadian voyageurs like Radisson. I myself am a descendant of Charles Michel de Langlade, an Ottawa war chief and French fur trader who fought for the French, then the British, then the Americans and even faced off against George Washington in the French-Indian war.

he was buried in the cemetary near charette mo. years later the cemetary was destroyed by railroad construction and scattered and lost. our family first settled in virginia and he made his way to kentucky. thanks for your effort to give a mostly no bs story of john colter... one of the best ive ever heard
Amazing to hear from you his relative 💖
Only Americans would have such a lack of class as to push a railway line straight through a cemetery
Thanks josh , I’ll listen in the morning in the tractor!
Thanks Aubrey
Josh you need not thank me for listening. THANK YOU FOR TELLING ME! I can't imagine what wonders John Colter saw, also can't imagine being chased by a bunch of Blackfeet warriors! He had to be tougher than woodpecker lips. Seriously, Thanks ever so much for all you do! Entertaining as always.
He was tough, for a fact
I'm gonna steal that woodpecker lips bit.
🤠👍
Man in the Wilderness was a great movie. John Huston and Richard Harris made it definitely worth watching.
Thank you for your work!!
Rod Steiger in Run of the Arrow depicted a white boy being chased by warriors as probably taken from Coulter's life.
You are right. Man in the wilderness with Richard harris, was one of the best movies there was. I found the revenant to be an exercise in futility. I'm sorry but Leonardo DiCaprio, is not even in the same league as Richard Harris. And will never attain it.
Thanks, I was trying to remember the name of that movie. I kept thinking about a man called horse
Josh, imma gonna listen to this later tonight. ❤
Heck yeah
Eyyy, always coming in clutch, needed something to chill to
Thanks for the effort, friend
Any time
That was good. Colter was the OG Mountain Man.
Never disappointed. Keep on!
Gracias
Another great one in the books. Thanks Josh.
My pleasure
I really look forward to new episodes and during these crazy ridiculous times when entertainers are pushing their views like anyone wanted to know or cared, it's very nice having a show with content you enjoy delivered by an excellent narrator and who's humor cracks me up! Thank you again my friend.
Thank you
Awesome story of a great man's life. What a adventure!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love your channel. Always entertaining and informative. You have a gift for storytelling. Appreciate it.
I appreciate that
This just is my pleasure hearing this thank you for history and your time
Thanks
Awesome story what a he man that guy was
Another awesome story! Thanks, Josh!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Colter was such a beast. The balls to look back over your shoulder at the mountains and head back into the unknown. Amazing.
Also, I really wish we had more info on Drouillard. Ambrose’s book makes him seem indispensable.
Yeah, Drouillard was tough
Loved the channel sonce Bloody Beaver.
Thanks
I just did a cheeky lasso wave with my headphone jack when i saw this posted
Nice
I don't know what kind of a person turns back west after the Lewis and Clark expedition, but all that cardio sure paid off in the long run.
phenomenal, my favorite mountain man of all time
I eagerly anticipate EVERY new episode!.....don't stop JOSH!!..👌✌️🤠
Thanks
@@WildWestExtravaganza what makes history SO INTERESTING is the way you tell the story! I dig the sarcasm, the random curses, the jokes!....don't change a thing!....FANTASTIC!
Too kind!
Myself too. One of the best on the tube
Just finished re-reading ‘Undaunted Courage’ by Ambrose and as an old Jarhead with a degree in early American history, I ALWAYS find your podcasts entertaining and informative. Great work-as always brother. 👍🏼🫡
Thanks! Love that book
prime beaver country during an era that could be known as the fur rush
Reminds me of high school. 😜
A man like that would most likely modify everything he used. I'm thinking the 54 cal ball would be appealing.
Brother Josh, please roll the rr's on 'extravaganza. It's like a trademark!
Thank you brother
Thank YOU
Seems like Mr. Colter could have written the training manual for the Navy Seals. That was one tough hombre !! Great story, thanks.
Tough dude
There's a ghost town in the mountains in RDR2 Called Colter I always felt like it was a slick tribute to him lol
If it’s not it should be
not too many people mentioned mad Anthony Wayne, i was born and raised in fort Wayne
I love Colter's story. I'm watching now. Have you done, or do you intend to do a episode on Jedediah Smith?
I haven’t yet but I plan on it
The United States: "What did we just buy?" Lewis & Clark: "Idk, but let's go have a look at it."
Simon Kenton story is going to be one of NY favorites before I even hear it that was a guy that had 5he bark on him like Colter
LMAO! Colter was the type of man that had zero F's for wimps.
Boy oh boy Josh, I want you to tell my story in a few years. Not that I’m in a hurry or have done anything worth a shift. I just like the way you tell it.
I admire your research of these manifold subjects, that takes real commitment
Thank you
So much fun!! 🎉
Very fine storytelling Josh. You put alot of life into Your characterizations. Thanks again, Best Wishes to You, Your Family and Friends. I'm already eagerly looking forward to Your next episode
Thanks, you too!
Good evening sir, thank you for the new episode! If I may suggest a future topic for discussion; Major Robert Rodgers and his rangers.
Great suggestion
I recently ran across your pod cast on I heart ,binged everything that was on there, congratulations Josh, flipping epic
Awesome! Thank you!
I'm guessing this is where the scene in the movie came from with Heston hiding in the beaver lodge
Yessir
Thanks!
Thank YOU
Holy Sh*t! You said Oregon correctly!
I’m trying
I just read his biography, tough man!
Nicely done. Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Joshhhhh, another great episode man. Fantastic job. Hands down best podcast I have listened too. I'm lazy ass and listen to a lot of them! Keep up the great work amigo.
Thank you!
Hell yes!
3:16 That's what she said..oooo sick burn
If you get a chance, a trip to Lolo, Montana is where you can find Traveler's Rest State Park, where the Expedition camped for a couple of days. I live in Missoula, MT along the Clark Fork River.
Does anyone else say the “Hee Yah” part in the intro or is it just me?
Another great episode Josh! Too bad Colter didn’t keep a daily journal of his trek after he split off from Corps of Discovery.
Woulda been nice
It would really pay to be a great long-distance runner back then if you were in Marathon shape and the people chasing you were on foot you could get away every time
At 27 min, the black feet while chasing jon reported he was yelling Feet dont fail me now.
Love this channel.
Glad to hear it!
Josh, you need to put that whip back on your tongue 👅 when saying your introduction.Extraveganza.😊
Hiding in a beaver lodge. Crazy.
nice
Evening Josh
Good evening
Awesome bro, as always...
Thanks
I'm thinking Coulter prolly carried an AR-15.
Agreed
@@WildWestExtravaganza 😂
Love your channel man ❤
I appreciate that!
Hell yea man! Can't get nough. Pierre's Hole...I dunno why that always gets me lol!
Sounds dirty
Love this one! Keep up the good work, research & presentation -- even if it means longer spells between. (I kinda think "Run Of The Arrow" with Rod Steiger was inspired by this story. I'll have to watch Charlton Moses as Mountain Man again, I had forgotten about it. I got to meet him once & was surprised at how ..."un-large" he was. Not so for his ego, though*)
Just like i thought it was good thanks
Im currently working on a painting. When its finished Im gonna title it "king George can suck it!"👊😂🇺🇸
Heck yeah
Hang on a sec, is that John Colter or English Bob?
Colter was definitely a grad of Bloody Beaver...❤....what some men do drop my jaw😮 seems somewhat unjust that the stiff neck brits got him
Napoleon needed fast cash. He sold a territory he had no interest, or control over
Thank you for a great episode! I do have a question...is the tribe called the Blackfoot or Blackfeet? I've heard both and was brutally told that it was Blackfoot...so I'm hoping you can clear that up for me...thanks bunches!
well done as always bloody beaver! lol
Who the hell dies of jaundice? Other than John Coulter of course
You do some great work and I love them all. Can you check on Poker Jim, that's the only name he went by, he froze to death during a blizzard in 1894 near Squaw Gap in western North Dakota.
👍
What….no rolling ‘R’ at intro??
Imposter!
Hey man can you do an episode on Pancho Villa?
Fun fact about beavers; the excretion of a beaver’s anal glands has been used for hundreds of years as a vanilla flavoring. No, seriously. Look it up!
So Mr Colter may have had some good flavoring and not just good beaver pelts.
Yummy

The cost of the Louisiana purchase, all those states and land was nothing compared to Elon Musk buying Twitter. Think about that.
Bloody noses from running hard happens to race horses all the time
ak-47
So did he make a ton of money out west ?
Not even close to the first but continue.
Not even close to the first to what?
Another excellent tale, thanks!
Thanks for listening
Great story, but please stop referring to them as ''native'' they much like the Europeans, they also came from somewhere else, early settlers, or immigrants, there were others before what became indians.
What term would you prefer?
