John Glanton & the REAL Blood Meridian

  • “It makes no difference what men think of war. War endures. As well ask men what they think of stone. War was always here. Before man was, war waited for him. The ultimate trade awaiting its ultimate practitioner.”
Blood Meridian, set mainly in the American Southwest during the late 1840s, tells of an unnamed protagonist known only as the Kid. We follow the Kid as he runs away from home and makes his way to Texas before becoming involved in an ill-fated adventure into Mexico. The Kid survives a massacre at the hands of the Comanche and is eventually recruited into a gang of scalp hunters led by John Glanton and his second in command - the absolutely terrifying Judge Holden. The gang then proceeds to cut a murderous swath of destruction throughout northern Mexico before reaping their just rewards. Here’s the fun part: Blood Meridian is loosely based on real-life people and events, including John Glanton and Judge Holden. Today we’re going to focus mostly on Glanton, an ex-Texas Ranger and war hero turned homicidal maniac. What was John Glanton’s life like prior to becoming a scalp hunter? And how did Glanton really die? Was it as gruesome as portrayed in Blood Meridian? We’ll also take a look at a young soldier by the name of Samuel Chamberlain, as well as discuss the true identity of the honorable Judge Holden. #history #wildwest #bloodmeridian

@@versebuchanan512 the book strikes me as one of those “grossly edgy” type of books that are genuinely so grizzly that it shakes you to your core… but not so overtly edgy that it becomes an eye roll.
Sometimes ya need these types of truly heinous reads or forms of entertainment to help us through our shit. Like crying really hard and feeling so wildly better after, to the point of it being bizarre to yourself why you feel better.

@@hunter5822 that's exactly it. It's right up to the edge of "Okay, you're just trying to be shocking," but... At the same time, you get these little moments of humanity and goodness. The Kid never actually abandons any of his allies to die, or Toadvine and Tobin- despite both feeling and believing that they're lost souls- still calling out Holden for his deeds. I think it's those spots of true humanity in the bleakness of the story that make it something more than edgy violence.

I discovered Blood Meridian years ago, before the world at large seemed to know about Cormac McCarthy. Well, of course, the world caught on and he is now widely celebrated. I have read all his books but Blood Meridian remains my favorite . It is by far
the most violent and the most
    horrific of his works
    and that
is saying a lot considering some of the scenes in other books that come to mind. However, I credit this book with giving me the phrase "mindless violence,"
    which seems to describe
the way of so many of my fellow Texans and Westerners. Anyway, glad to discover this channel and to know the background of the book.

As somebody who’s witnessed a man get shot in the face multiple times and die right in front of me, I was surprised that even I had to put Blood Meridian down for about two weeks when I was halfway through reading it because of how dark and unsettling it was. That being said, it is one of my favorite books, the fact that it made me feel that darkness so deeply to the point I had to put it down solidified it for me. One of the best, worst, most interesting books I’ve ever read. Very raw and real, no happy endings, no protagonist.

Shout to to Dale and Brandon, and of course Josh for highlighting the struggle. I've been fighting Cancer for over a year (going well, don't sweat me, don't want to make this about me) and one of the things I Intentionally do and strive for is to spread some of that light when I'm out for my treatments, I'm always doing my damndest tp bring positivity to the other patients AND the staff, and even if I don't feel it, once I DO endeavor to be positive there, I'll be damned if it doesn't become real. Thanks for helping put it into words - you're not as mush-mouthed as you think Josh.
Laughter won't cure it, knowledge can help you make better decisions, but worry will definitely make it worse. Stay strong all my fellow fans of Josh and bless you Dale and Brandon - you especially, speaking as a father, I'd rather take on any burden than see it pass on to my son so God bless.

You have no idea how badly I needed to hear the ending of that video...
I'm a disabled combat veteran, 19d Cavalry Scout, with tours in iraq. During my tours of combat I ended up with l, at this point, stage 4 paraseptal emphysema.
I found out in march 2020 when I broke some ribs and punctured my lungs BMX racing at 42 yrs old. At that time I was given 5-10 yrs to live.
Recently i wasin the hospital with a lung infection that made my lungs rub against my rib cage and the pain was insane with every breath.
While there I had some new MRIs done and conversed with some experts. They told me I have 3-6 yrs left...
There is no cure besides new lungs and that's not gunna happen.
I have 10 yo boy named Maximus who broke his arm in football practice last week. He's not ready for me to leave him...
He's not ready, nor am I ready to leave him...
I needed to hear what u said... it gave me hope. It made my heart feel better.
I've been mean and so angry like no one's business and I've been letting it all out on random people and I know it's not right but I find myself being the bad guy more than ever.
    It's cuz I'm scared...
It's cuz im mad that I'm dying and they're not...tbh
I served my country honorably in combat, I'm good man, I'm loyal, I'm faithful, I don't deserve to die young.
I heard someone once say that "only the lucky get to grow old" and it's so true.

When it come to good and evil,I like Carl jung's views of it he reintroduced a old native tale of 2 wolves..which says each of us have 2 wolves within us one of them represents empathy, kindness, everything associated with positive human emotions.than the other has all the inherent evil traits..which wolf win determines what kind of world we live in.but Carl jung points out if you neglect one wolf for too long and it will bite you.which is a clever way to say we need healthy ways to channel those negative emotions becuz no matter what we tell ourselves they're still within us.

I never saw the sheriff Bell dream the same as others. The way it’s presented doesn’t speak of hope like other people see it. At least for me. It’s more of a somber thing. His father carrying the fire ahead seemed more like his father died, or went on ahead, leaving Bell in darkness to carry on until he ultimately caught up with his father. As many of his ilk are religious, it seems like he meant he’ll die one day.
Which leaves the darkness. I take to mean as his father is the “Old Men” and Sheriff Bell, being raised in the image of his father, would be left in a time when people like his father are no longer useful. While Sheriff Bell wanted to be what his father was, he knew he was ultimately outmatched by the evils of the time. One horse towns and brave sheriffs were no longer enough to keep the peace. How could they when even large government organizations still had trouble keeping the peace?
That’s just the way I see it. The only hope carried in his dream is the day he died, and if his faith was correct, he’d see his father again where he kept the fire going.

... I don't know if ' Blood Meridian ' was one of the " Great Works of Literature " or not, if only because I am not worthy of making so haughty a judgement, but I DO know that it was just about the most striking book I've ever read - second only (in my unschooled opinion) to the haunting ' 1984 ' ... by nature, and perhaps by necessity, it is written in an archaic and rather episodic style that I nonetheless found easy to read, easy to absorb & sufficiently gripping that I was hard-pressed to pause my consumption.
Whatever McCarthy was as a writer, he was gifted with a unique literary eye to the visual descriptor in narrative prose and a clean and honest frankness of morality without the need to resort to obvious moralizing ... buy this book read it and re-read it ... give it an honored place on your bookshelf !

This is one of Your better episodes Josh. Created about a subject i knew little of. It is very informative despite the lack of established fact for portions of it.
I appreciated most when You went philosophical, touching on current events, societal values, an individuals ethics and so much more.
You have shown Yourself to be so much more than a very good storyteller.
Thank You for all Your efforts.
Best Wishes to You, Your Family and Friends. #BloodyBeaver

Great video, I tried to find out a lot of this information for myself and I knew a great deal as well as reading the Cormac McCarthy novel. This video greatly expanded on what I already knew and presented it in a great narrative. I think it shows how well McCarthy researched his book and I think he told the story reasonably accurately.
