3 Exercises for Wider Shoulders | Isolating Middle Delts | Advanced Training #26

  • Want to build big and wide boulder shoulders for a better V-taper on your physique? If so, then you want to target the lateral head (middle) of your delts (deltoids). In this video I show you 3 simple isolation exercises for the middle delts that you can do to get wide, round and chiseled shoulders!
Some of these exercises you might have seen in my video last week when Steve Cook and I caught a shoulder workout at Gold's Venice (The Mecca). Some people had questions about the exercise selection, so some of that is covered here in this video. Included are some tips for training around injuries, like the elbow pain (tendinitis) that I had while training there in LA.

*SPECIAL NOTE regarding possible rotator cuff IMPINGEMENT due to internal rotation of the humerus....if you're tempted to leave a comment merely repeating what someone else has said on a different UA-cam channel regarding "pinky up lateral raises"...please read this before commenting.
Yes, impingement of the rotator cuff due to internal rotation of the humerus has been documented in EXTREME ranges of abduction - In simple terms, that means having your arm overhead. When doing a lateral raise properly you are never bringing your arms over your head. Second, the suggested angle of rotation should not be excessive - it's only a slight rotation of the hands (your pinky is literally not pointing straight up). Yes, if you were to aggressively rotate your hands you could put unnecessary stress on your rotator cuff, but that's true with any movement. Learn to train by "feel" and find a position that is comfortable (be sensible).
I've gone into more detail in one of the comments below.

James Grage - The Muscle Geek The technique videos have helped me to turn a decent amount of people on to bodybuilding. The fact that you present a safe common sense training style and aren't all about showing viewers how much you "can" lift is very inviting to people new to the gym and helps to reiterate the importance of techniques those more experienced may have forgotten about. Plus they help keep people in the gym from trying to ask me questions when in the middle of a workout. Thanks for all the uploads and hope to see The Muscle Geek be the last man standing on that stage!

The key is to stay in the line of scaption, ie not parallel to your body but about 6 inches forward. this will incorporate a bit more of the anterior head but it will dramatically cut down impingement issues. I oughta know lol.

James Grage - The Muscle Geek I just want to say thank you for taking the time out of your life to make these videos. Between your professional life, personal life and contest prep I can imagine your life is very busy. natefit nyc this is a great discussion thread. The shoulder joint works through the widest range of motion and therefore is the most vulnerable to injury. I'm a family doctor that works in a farming town. I see at least one shoulder injury a day. Rehab is often long and costly in terms of loss of income. I think that when training the shoulder that knowledge of the rotator cuff and training it is vital. These muscle bellies are in the back and not often obvious and therefore not that sexy. They are very functional however.

Dude I never leave any comments but congrats on such a great video and good luck with your competition. There is so much trash on the internet and this is a subject everyone has an opinion about or advice, specially ppl that don’t know a thing. Obviously you studied Anatomy and physiology or studied under someone that did. I liked the attention to detail and the fact that you’re very detail orientated about your craft. I hate buzz words like “science based”, protocols, etc… so refreshing to see a video with no hype. I would really recommend this channel to anyone who is a novice or even an intermediate person that wants to get better and learn. Keep up the great work brother impressive…

I learned so much from this video! Technique details were awesome as usual. I've recently gone much lighter on my shoulder work and can already tell that time-under-tension with lighter weights is making a huge difference in the quality of my workouts. Can't wait to incorporate some of these variations to further improve shoulder work. Very interesting that you don't do much isolation work on anterior delts because of other press work. Demo of cable crossovers for rear delts was very helpful. I usually bring those down too low and hit more tricep than posterior delts. Also appreciated the explanation of impact on traps (upper and lower). Jam packed with useful info for me. Thank you!
