  • In this video, I cut a hole in a perfectly good hardwood floor to install a floor outlet. I didn't screw up which was a surprise. Quick and easy project to add electrical power to the middle of your room. Enjoy!

Nice work, a piece of wire or coat hanger is a good way see where the pilot hole lands too

You are so right. I hear the wire that holds up insulation is usually an electricians go to for this.

Why wouldn't you drill the pilot hole up from the basement?

    • @glasshalfempty1984

Because you need to choose as best as you can, where you want that receptacle to be. Which means you need to do it from upstairs. Sure you could do it downstairs and ensure that you definitely go right in between the floor joists, but then it might not be where you want it. And if you hit a floor joist (while drilling upstairs), you don't have a choice but to move it obviously. But even so, your pilot hole from upstairs is your first choice. The place where you want it to go....
So basically you make your first choice where you want that receptacle to go. And then you do measurements to try and make sure you aren't hitting a floor joist. And then you still do the pilot hole from upstairs because you have your bearings there. And then you cross your fingers that you landed in a good spot downstairs.

what type of extension cord do I use? Does the door stay open or do I remove it? I want it to be hidden under a rug

To truly look professional, at the 8:52 mark, make sure all of your wall plate screws are vertical as opposed to vertical and horizontal. Almost all electricians install wall plate screws with the screws in the vertical orientation. As an electrician, this is how I can tell when a homeowner has done some work in the house.

Cool to know. Never thought of that. I will do it now thanks

Or make sure all of them are horizontal

That is a terribly unreliable method for determining if a homeowner has done some work themselves. I mean that honestly just sounds like an OCD thing. Not to mention there are probably half a dozen reasons if not more for removing a wall plate. Just a couple off the top of my mind are if somebody wants to paint, or if someone wants to replace their wall plate covers. That's all I can think of but I'm sure people could think of another four at least. It's just not a good way to determine that.

So what wasn’t clear to me is how the 14-2 wires you used tied back into the breaker in the breaker box.

How do we plug something into it? I can't figure out how to open

It opens from the top and plugs inside

Thank you. I got this answer also: pry up the single slot with a sturdy flat head screw driver.

Really strange… your audio only comes though the right side of my headphones but your video clips bring audio in both ears. Oop. Your voiceover came on and it’s coming through both ears. So when you are talking through your lav mic… something’s up.

Hmm. I will have to look into that. I got a new voice over mic so we shall see

I hate 3-way switches. Just keep it simple.

    • @glasshalfempty1984
      @glasshalfempty1984 7 місяців тому +1

You might as well say you hate convenience. I installed a switch for every entrance/exit to every room. It actually blows my mind that you are saying that. If you have three different entrances/exits to one room, It would be completely idiotic to only have one switch at one of those entrances/exits. Ideally you would want one at every entrance/exit so that no matter where you're coming in or where you are leaving you can turn the light on or off.
