Red oak or white oak? Makes a big difference.

I have red oak floors in a building that's 100 years old. I am really struggling with choosing a stain...what is the name of the mid-range sample you showed? I don't think you named it.

You help a LOT! We have a red cedar tongue and groove ceiling and also a very dark orange undertoned shiny floor. For this remodel, finding the right floor has led me to too many pink and wrong undertones. Even a little gray seems off to me. That Barbarosa by Craft floor looks perfect, but I have found one light floor with just a minimal orange undertone in the grooves.
Your guidance makes me feel more confident...thank you!!

Wish I had seen this video before I spent a huge amount of money putting in new hardwoods throughout the whole 3,000 square foot house. I was between medium toned and darker toned woods. I chose medium. It’s red oak and now I live in a sea of orangey pink. I should have gone with the next darker option but was worried it would be too dark and show dirt more and also go a bit green. Any suggestions for wall paint colors to draw the brown tones out of my flooring and tone down the orangey pink?

Great video!!! I am selecting wood floors right now and your advice about undertones really helped me. One thing I want to add to the conversion is that "LIGHT" and "DARK" are relative. A medium brown at your house might be a dark brown at mine. So first, I determined what is light, medium, and dark in my house by going to the hardwood store- I borrowed samples from them (remember to get the expensive brands because their wood samples are consistent - I use Mirage and Panaget white oak samples). I try to avoid woods that are white/gray washed, has heavy orange/red/pink undertones. You can't avoid undertones but you can select the ones that has very light undertones that are balanced with browns. For example, at my house, Mirage's natural finish on Canadian white oak engineering wood is medium (the more expensive, the more uniform the grain/colors - on their exclusive collection, the wood doesn't have pink/red undertones - they have exclusive rights to this special oak species). The wood has a little orange, yellow, and browns. Although I can read undertones by comparing them to colors of various objects, I also took picture of the wood sample against a gray background, and used LightRoom (I am a photography fanatic) and confirmed the colors in the wood - it's a hefty investment so I want to make sure that the wood I selected doesn't have the undertones that I don't like! I am getting rid of my red oak wood so I don't want to make the same mistakes again!!!
Thank you Kylie! You are the 2nd designer who talked about medium brown, except you explained it so much better!
BTW, you remind me of Anne of Green Gable, my all time fav!!!

What a great note to get! And you're right - one person's medium is another person's WAY too dark!
And I love the Anne of Green Gable reference :).

If you are staining an Alder island, what stain colors would you recommend? I am considering Driftwood but would like something a little lighter and in the brown family maybe. Thoughts? Thank you!

I should add I will have 4" white oak planks with a water-based stain (hoping that falls in your "not too light" category. (We have a yellow lab...)

Thank you so much!! Super helpful! What’s the wood color at 6:35 and 8:55 please? Are they the same color?

OK, I can agree with you here, but I do have grey washed cabinets and light wood floors on my new build. 😅 I still love it because of the other finishes we chose and the paint you helped us narrow in on. And sometimes you have to make compromises, which I know you understand. Still love your advice.

You know, SO much comes down to moderation! It can be TOUGH when you have gray-washed cabinets, gray tile floor, gray walls, etc...often, it's about finding that PERFECT balance and it sounds like you nailed it1

For my new build I'm going natural walnut floors( woodura Engineered hardwood) for all but the kitchen and Primary Bath. My kitchen cabinets are walnut lowers and maple uppers. I'm hoping to live there at least 20 years so just for me.

Can you do a video on Briarwood by Benjamin Moore please! I want to use it for my kitchen cabinets with pale oak walls. ♥️🙏🏻

Briarwood seems to have green undertones and would not look good with City Loft, IMHO. City Loft in my experience has some pink in it mixed with some gray, more of a light beige/ taupe. Benjamin Moore, Edgecomb Gray has better undertones and goes better with Briarwood.
