My parents surprised me with a car when I turned 16 1978. Only their was a catch. It was the 1954 Bel Air in the garage. They said if can get it running it was mine. I added brake fluid and charged the battery. Then I had to add seatbelts and then registered. Loved the car. It was given to my Mom when she graduated. I wish I kept it.

@@jamesb.9472 I would not Know. My newest car is a 2007 Mercury Grand Marquis. You can charge it. Even most sealed batteries can open charge. It would be a shame if you had to replace the battery everytime you leave the lights on.

Made me value my car even more. Now that I’m older I understand why and I’m glad they did the way they did. I gave both of my kids their 1st car but they pay insurance, gas and all maintenance.

If I'm correct, you've got a couple of years before you can drive legally with more than one person under the age of 18 in the car. I think Robert was saying that he learned a tremendous lesson and Life Learning values regarding his investment in obtaining and taking care of a car. A lot of kids these days don't understand that because if you ride by the High Schools these days, you will notice that most of the cars are less than 3 to 5 years old, and you know kids can't afford cars like that and are not footing their own bills in any monetary way. The cars are just too expensive for kids to afford on their own. I started working when I was 16. I didn't have a car till I was able to get a better job in college and buy a $1,000 car. It even had a slow leaking radiator and I would have to pull over sometimes and pour stop leak in it. And mind you I'm a girl, not some guy who this was very easy for. I loved my car because I worked hard for it, and I learned about the engine. I would read what people say a little more carefully. Because it is a huge investment to take on a car in knowledge just as much as monetarily. No, it is not going to gain value unless it is something vintage or odd like that. But there are different definitions of investment. Example, two people who engage in a marriage are investing in each other for the rest of their lives to be by each other's side. That's all I have to say about this, and I hope everyone who agrees or doesn't agrees will live a happy life and be happy for others when they get nice things. The key to children getting cars is the parents teaching their children the knowledge of owning a car as well.
Here in Canada when I was a teen my bro and I bombed around in my moms '76 'vette, a Chevette that is. Then at age 20 I got my first own car, a 1988 Prelude Si. that was a fun car and looked good.

My grandparents gave a car to my cousin and sister at their 18th birthday. When it was my turn they said could not afford it but grandfather had a Toyota celica said we can share it loved the car. He got into a accident totaled the car probably would still have it today
