I appreciate the working from live vs photo. And one can still creat magic from a photo, and it can be eternal. Rules just kill everything.

I would really love to hear your take on a painter like Balthus. There are definitely kitsch-like qualities to his work, but he is also very much a part of the modernist movement.

The antiphoto angle is ahistorical. Photography is only "a copy machine" if the artist treats it that way. I encourage you to look at how Gauguin, Degas, and Delacroix used photography. Of course many of the Old Masters, Baroque, and Neoclassical painters used optical and measuring devices, and once photography came on the scene, nearly all of the greats referenced it or worked from it in some way or another. Start here: "The Painter and the Photograph: From Delacroix to Warhol," and then here: "Shared Intelligence: American Painting and the Photograph."

The main problem with painting from photograph is that color reproduction will never be 100% accurate and the way things look in real life vs on a 2D photograph is completely different.

You guys are great. Its time your philosophy gets the public attention it deserves.. But what advice would you give someone who is not able to get (paid) models? one can´t paint oneself on and on. it is good practice, but starts getting difficult when you have an idea for a larger painting with at least two people in it doesn´t it ? Unfortunately most academies don´t provide models or model-focused courses .. and when they do, it may come with a different mindset. When I studied fulltime two semesters in art school we would have one nude-course that was based with human models. But every Pose was just 5 to a maximum of 10, 15 Minutes long. I wasn´t able to do much more than impressionistic sketches, what was fun for the first weeks but doesn´t lead to a deeper knowledge about the human body.. and it was wished to "abuse" color and material to develop a "free" artistic mind.. That practice would show in the results of the students: All sketches and paintings would look more or less the same anyway: scrawly ,anatomically often wrong, simplicistic nudes without faces in a colour mess that mostly where appreciated by the Tutor. I felt like they all wanted to impress him and get recognition. I wouldn´t show up anymore at some point.

One main thing is to get into contact with other painters/sculptors and model for each other. Or pay a model with a drawing.
You can also use good reproductions of Titian, Caravaggio, Nerdrum, etc. and add elements from there.
It is also possible to merge yourself with elements from said reproductions.

@@petetube99 I think that is (nose) "nasolabial folds" or "smile lines".

The Cave of Unintended High-Larity! Zese painters who commit zese sins, they soooo, how you say, degenerate. Perhaps zeir vork should be gathered together and exhibited vith schlogans on ze vall about how degenerate they are and ze sins zey have committed!

So painting from pictures is looked upon as a "sinn"?
Well good luck painting and studying other painters (master-copies).
Just to put people back on track, don't listen to the advice about not painting from pictures, it's totally nonsense. Combine both world's, paint from life and pictures, you will improve dramatically.
Don't worry about accurate colours while painting from pictures, that's not the intentions why you should do it. It's a lot of other wisdom gained from it.
