- The first 1,000 people to use this link will get a 1 month free trial of Skillshare: skl.sh/oddtink... ---- In this episode I will restore this Large lighter made in occupied Japan by Reliance. The lighter is very oxidized and in need of a restoration. I also thought it looked worthy of gold plating so I wanted to practice that skjill on it. I used laser cleaner loaned to me by W2M to clean up the dirty and oxidized surfaces. You can find more about their lasers from here: w2m.fi/?lang=en
After cleaning the parts were polished and then decreased with acetone. This will allow me to get nice shiny plating on the parts. I used an electroless nickel plating method. I prefer it over electroplating as it usually gives better results and plated parts evenly on the inside as well. electroplating can have issues were plating is much thicker is some areas and some areas are hard to plate because current doesn't flow through all the areas of the metal in the same way. But in the end both methods have their own advantages. If you are a beginner in metal plating I recommend checking out my electroplating tutorial. Electroplatin is by far the easiest method fo r a beginner. Link to the tutorial: • How to make simple DIY...
Once the parts were nickel plated I gold plated it with electroplating method called brush plating were you just rub the electrolyte on the surface of the item and gold will appear on the surface.
I also needed to make a new gasket to replace the old one. I just took thick gasket paper and used hole punches to make a ring of the correct size.
I hope you enjoy the video as much as I enjoyed making it. Thanks for watching!

I grew up watching my grandfather restore odd little mechanical and electrical gadgets during the 80's and 90's, watching your videos reminds me tons of him doing the same. Cheers for keeping old things alive!
Fun thing about these types of lighter is that you can run them on Paraffin (aka Kerosene), which lasts a lot longer in the lighter as it doesn't evaporate over time, so rather than being bone-dry it will light when it's needed... :D
John D Rockefeller history lesson flaskbacks
Wow I didn't know that.
THAT i did not know!!!! wait isnt paraffin , wax? or is paraffin wax made from kerosene? or the other way around? someone help me im not knowing this knowledge
thanks for sharing Bloke! :)
@@Curtis.Carpenter It's a confusing British thing, Paraffin fuel, as used in lamps and stoves, is for the rest of the world usually called Kerosene, as opposed to Paraffin wax for candles, and "Liquid Paraffin", aka Mineral Oil, which is used for horses with colic amongst other things, very confusing!!! :S
I swear he gets more advanced tools with every video. Ten videos from now he’ll be restoring a Swiss Army knife with NASA tech robotics
I much prefer these kind of restorations, consoles are cool but (especially the modern ones) they're pretty much the same thing. But with these type of objects you can be way more creative/ingenious with the restoration process, I love that
Love your works anyway, keep it up!
Both scratch different itches for me
@@joshuaijaola2145 I couldn't have said it better myself
Has he made a video showcasing his collection? Cause damn he’s gotta have a lot of cool ass lighters.
To my knowledge he has not.
check our restoration and knife creation dear
thanks 🙏
Don’t think he has but that’s a great idea!
If you're into lighters, "Awesome Restorations" does a bunch :)

I think he sells most of these things that he restores.
I'd be really interesting in seeing a comparison between sand blasting vs laser vs chemical for removal...
Just to see what is best, is there any difference (other than time/cost) in the outcome.
One thing that I think would have been lost with sandblasting on this lighter would be the fine engraving, the laser saved that engraving on the lighter. I believe that the laser is much funner to use too and much quieter.
It's a laser!!!!
Valid question. If you're a downright chemist I'd like to think nothing can beat the perfect delivery of chemicals in an order specifically designed around what you're cleaning off, but it would certainly take longer, end up costing at least a little bit, and pose significant risk to the material if you get anything wrong.
@@craigape It is enough to choose an acid for various metals that will effectively dissolve oxides, you can use phosphoric acid in a weak concentration, although it will take a long time .. Better an average concentration for 12 hours and then polish, All the same, corrosion leaves deep depressions, and no matter what you clean it, if this is not an exact part, it does not matter, the surface is ALREADY damaged
What about electrolysis
Ah, I love this sort of videos where you restore old lighters. So soothing.
1:00 the future is now, old man haha
cyberpunk 2077 😂
I wouldn't be surprised to learn that this originally had leather wrapping around the body. The markings suggest gripping surface, along with a lip at top and bottom.
It would probably have a clip on the side too, to hang it off a belt or something right?
@@SwayRod836 You could be right. I think it's probably a table lighter, given the size, but who can tell?
Why is it decorative then? No need for that if it was covered with leather. It's also not deep enough to provide grip for a leather cover.
Your restoration videos are one of a kind. They're perfect.

I love how you did the gold plating. Instead of coating it entirely, it shows a little bit of the nickel through the crevices, which gives it that vintage feel still rather than looking painted. The end result feels like a beautifully well preserved old piece rather than a brand new one, and it looks so good.
I wish all ads were this non invasive and calming to watch. such a treat and not bothering at all!
Ducktor rules! That and lo and behold, there will be an episode with stop-motion animation, where the Ducktor will do everything.
I hope so
Aye! Give the Ducktor a wee restoration of his own; just a quackie, you know?...
Thank you for helping me sleep at night. Your videos are very calming and peaceful with the Odd Tinkering here and there!
Every time I see a large metal item covered in rust I get excited for the laser!!!
I just want to say that everybody in the restorations niche who has stolen your mannerisms don't hold a hold a candle to you. Long live the Ducktor!!!
For installing the screws for the fuel port and flint port, try using a coin like a US or Canadian dime. Most lighters are made to refill these items without having to go look for tools to do so. That is the reason the screw for the fuel port has a curved bottom and the width of the slot is what it is. They just need snugged not torqued greatly.
I can't read the word laser anymore without seeing Dr. Evil doin' his air quotes in my mind.
I love your videos. They're a work of art. Plus they really calm me down. Thanks for sharing your work with us.
5:17 oh my god that's so good, the gear you use and your filmmaking skills are awesome. It's a pleasure for me to see every detail clearly.
Right! So cool.
6:40 quite possibly the coolest screensaver to never be created.
I love your videos and look forward to them. I also loved the way you incorporated the paid promotion in this and didn't go crazy like some content creators.
Also, I think it would be a fun video to see you restore your own tools, like your vice.
Always enjoy your videos. Taking what I consider works of art from the past and bringing them back to their pristine state always makes me smile. I wish we made all things as well as they did in the past.
Congrats, you are one of the first people that I actually stuck around the ads for.
Once again outstanding restoration, OT! 👏 I love how the video starts off with the Ducktor using his machine to really shake that can. 😆 Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a screw THAT big before. 🤣 Great to see the laser cleaner back again, that thing’s awesome! 👍 It’s also nice to see you use electro-less nickel-plating once more! 😃 Maybe we’ll get to see you use more of that method in future videos! 😁 That’s another really cool lighter too, I love the way it functions! 👌 Can’t wait for the next restoration video! 👍
That thing is absolutely amazing, great work buddy.
I like the fact that you don't overdo the restorations you just restore it to the original and that's it. Very very cool 👍👍
That was incredible!!!! What a gorgeous piece. And as always, your wit is wonderful!!!!!
You've provided me with a great enjoyment and a great relief while dealing with a lot of stuff in my life recently - every single one of your videos are relaxing, easy + extremely interesting to watch and always made to the highest quality. I hope you continue to do what you love for many years to come; thank you very, very much for all the effort you put in to create and restore such wonderful items 💖
Watching you since your videos were gloveless!
Love this kind of content with old objects, and I see you upgraded a lot of tools and methods, so nice!
Love watching your restorations, OT. Live long and prosper
This is amazing!!! 🤩
I am so in awe of your skills!!!
I have always heard commenters and creators talk about YT unsubscribing people from channels, but I think this is the first time it has happened to me. I thought you had just quit posting very many vids, but it turns out YT had unsubscribed me from your channel and quit recommending your vids to me. On the bright side, I now have a backlog of restoration vids to keep me busy for a while!
I love your videos and I love repairing things. My family were all tinkerers and you using a vice, sanding, filing etc takes me back to my childhood. And my dad would de-burr everything, then use the file to take hard skin off his feet!
Wow what a gorgeous lighter! That was such a satisfying video to watch.
I really enjoyed that. Thanks for sharing the video. It is appreciated.
I envy the fine set of tools you have. It must have quite a while to collect them. With good tools and attention to detail, your restorations are superb!

That laser just seems like magic to me.
Who here watches this person’s videos because you like the restoration part of the video, not for ASMR purposes.
Beautiful restoration! Stunning shot of the laser removal! 🤩
I have a Kiribi pipe lighter that looks exactly the same as this lighter, but it's smaller than my palm. Amazing work
When he places the lighter down right at the start, it kinda sounds like the very first block dropping in place during the GameCube jingle.
Big Fan Bro Big Fan♥️
This is a masterpiece. Congratulation from Vietnam.😉👍🍺
Skillshare letting Odd Tinkering so silent ads makes me want to actually buy their stuff.
this is the first video i've seen with an ad that WASN'T spoken, awesome
Another job well done. Love how the plating came out!
But the video just came out…
Idk I watched it?
Well done👌 the sponsored ad with the can shaker was brilliant 👏
The rusty spring being pulled out was fantastic 😍
I know, I was nervous it was gonna break
Really nice restoration job and it was cool to see a different style of nickel plating.
That restoration is WORTH IT. Beautiful gold!
Worth its weight in gold! Odd Tinkering’s videos are pure gold.
I keep waiting for your videos for a while now! Please keep posting great restoration videos these are highly satisfying ❤️
Glad you turned it back to gold. The original after polish and laser looked way better than the nickle
These videos are my favorites. Love the lighters
The laser cleaning was mesmerizing, I could watch that all day as its so satisfying.
Fantastic restoration. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One thing I love is that he doesn’t stop the video for sponsors he just tells you as he’s doing it
As usual interesting and good work! But I've never come across old lighters for restoration.
I always love seeing the laser removing that paint and rust
I have never seen lazer cleaner before a lot better than sandblasting. The out come was great, man that is one big lighter, wouldn't want to carry that in my pocket all day.
You should restore a typewriter one of these days. I think that would be pretty cool.

Because, why not? 00:56 I like that plating technique with the applicator. It's almost like painting.
oh yes, another wonderful video to *light up* our day
The right video at the right time! Thank you OT 👍
it never ceases to amaze how much love and care is put into these restorations, always way, way more than was put into the original.
Imagine your mate asking for a light, and you pull this out 😂
Depends on the size of the cigar!
I can't believe that Liquid Ice got replaced by Water...
Climate change is to blame.

Amazing work as always, thanks for the upload
The close up laser shots blew my mind. Really cool stuff
That spring removal was very satisfying
I love that even your ad-break is relaxing and informative.
OddT: Using the link will also help me to never make a spoken ads again.
Me: *laughing hysterically*
Odd tinkering.. ur the one who inspired me to want to learn how to fix electronics and much more! Ur the one who will help me learn and make my future awesome!
That laser is extremely satisfying
I'm a retired musical instrument repairman. I used pumice on a piece of wet lamp wick to clean up around difficult-to-reach places, like all of the things soldered to the top of the lighter.
Ha! You've just reminded me of our British classic comedian Dick Emery and his character Lampwick! Think I might stay on the Tube for a while longer...
You know what... yea the gold plating definitely did add that level of prestige. Brilliant 💛
Your videos are so ODDly satisfying
What and odd lighter.
this is why I like this channel I get to see so many old things get restored
I want the slowmo guys to do a video on the laser cleaner. It's so fascinating.
I love seeing rusty objects going to so shiny. These antique videos are my favorites but I still like the electronic series.
never knew how little gold was actually in something that's "gold plated"
That's JTVs secret way to make money.
That shaking part was hilarious!
Haha, but it's actually a useful device, when you need to shake things up. Especially with spray paint it's easy to shake the bottle too little and suddenly the paint surface has some droplets from uneven paint. Been there done that :D
Definitely true!
Very very cool project 👍 really enjoyed watching the rust removal with the laser and the can shaker was classic. Amazing finished job. Liked and Subscribed.
I saw the notification, hoped, clicked, and was not disappointed! I love you content! 😊😊
Still the greatest UA-cam channel of its kind.
superbe renovation comme d habitude! c est tres bien de l avoir mis en or. ca fait mieux ressortir les motifs gravés de ce bel objet. bonne decision! encore bravo. merci de partager.
Nice work! I would really love to have that laser cleaner. Just amazing.
Cleaning the rust with the laser will never not be satisfying
The fact that the sponsored audio was muted so we didnt hear a voice >>>
Love this channel. Relaxing
and I’m tryna find where he talks 😭 lol
You and TysyTube always give us all top quality content and that's why i like both of you
Beautiful restoration good job mister well done
that is the industrial-sized lighter for Casinos, Bars, Lounges, and military bases.
I can't believe you started using water instead of liquid ice. Never expected you to sell out to Big h20!
Another amazing job. It is always a pleasure to watch your videos. :)
Beautiful restoration. Very entertaining and educational to watch. Keep them coming friend!
That big screw looks totally out of place are you sure it is original🤔 great job as always.👍👍👍
Alas, I now get excited seeing the serial killer gloves pop up on my screen when the video starts.
Świetna jest ta zrobiona robota i ta cyrkulacja antycznej zapalniczki pozdrawiam mile i serdecznie 👍👍👍👍

Dahm thats a huge Lighter. But its also lovely to see it coming back to Life. Very nicely done =)
Am i the only one who likes to watch his videos before i sleep? These videos treat my insomnia
This video made even better with the increase of Ducktor scenes 😉
The Gold plating process was really interesting and new!
