  • The Wilderness Living "Survival" Challenge is not actually a standard "survival challenge," but more like a test of the modern gatherer to sustain himself on wild foods only. We will weight ourselves at the start of the challenge and then weigh-out at the end. If we lose any weight at all, we lose the challenge!
    Last season of The Wilderness Living Challenge brought Zach Fowler to Ontario, Canada on my home turf, but this time we are in Zach's home turf of Maine, USA. The point of all this is simple, gain or maintain body weight only catching cooking our own food. Last season was our best so far, we managed to get all sort of wild foods from beaver to bear, duck, grouse, and more, but will it be as epic this time around? This is a coastal survival challenge!
    First we seek out alewife or river herring in order to bait our lobster traps. But after we run out of time, we are left only with bait. The lobster traps will need to stay out in the ocean for at least two nights. The basic idea is to trade a very bony bait fish for something much more palatable, wild, fresh caught lobster.
    Local, organic, wild-harvested northern waters fish paté...with subtle creek flavor notes. In this first episode of our wilderness survival challenge we search out lobster and alewife or river herring. We'll use dip nets and lobster traps in a motor boat to try to balance out our calories.
    Check out Zach Fowler: / @fowlersmakeryandmischief
    Follow along as we struggle to get wild foods!
    I am joined by Zach Fowler on his home turf in Maine, USA in the spring.
    Here, we plan to do Season 5 of The Wilderness Living Challenge. The goal of the challenge is to gain or maintain our body weight eating only the wild food we can collect on site using whatever means necessary.
    Winning the Wilderness Living Challenge is harder than it seems.
    Season 5: Maine Spring, takes place in Maine, USA with coastal food priorities including fish, clams, crab, seaweed, groundhog, pigeon, turkey, dandelion, cattail, and whatever else is edible! Nothing is off the menu, if it's edible, we'll eat it.
    We make use of all the resources in this challenge to meet the demands for calories imposed by the human body!

      I thoroughly enjoyed the start to the wilderness challenge cause it’s life stuff happens it’s not all peaches and cream
      I was thinking maybe you could add the ground up fish with the masa and made like either a burger or a fish cake and I know if you brought Masa with you you must have brought some Bear fat too right right say you did cause from what Jeremy says Bear fat makes everything taste better 😁

    You're 100% right about using modern tools to get game. The resources available now is nothing like it was back in the day. Especially in a place like Maine.
    The only "criticism" I would have is that given the fact we're all living off easy to find, calorie rich foods, if you loose a pound or two, it shouldn't be a "loss". If we were all living wild, we'd probably all be thinner and fitter. Although I know you're pretty lean already,

    • @TheWoodedBeardsman
      @TheWoodedBeardsman  5 років тому

      And shorter! That's a big thing to "digest"...lack of lifetime of good food would stunt our growth and we'd need less food.

    • @jimf1964
      @jimf1964 5 років тому

      The Wooded Beardsman Yes, shorter if they weren't getting enough food. Stats show people are getting taller because of the increase of calories in our diets.
      But point is, to me anyway, it's still not a fail if you dropped a pound or two, so long as you still felt good, but that isn't quantitative, so you have to use the scale. I'd call it a moral victory I guess🙂
      But right now, I can't imagine you guys pulling it off in a place like Maine. Way too populated, but I guess I have to wait to find out.

      @@jimf1964 Did you watch last season all the way through? I don't want to give you any spoilers...but that's the one to pay attention. You're right about the height thing, but we can't really go back. Are you watching One Wildcrafter? Dude is down like 45 lbs and only weights 10 lbs more than me. He's only eating wild foods...but no limits on how he gets them.

      The Wooded Beardsman I watched and enjoyed the last one you did with fowler. I actually wanted to ask you why you drove so far up north for it, and some other videos I've seen from you as well. That's the thing...pressure from man everywhere. We went up for less pressured ducks and grouse...even then we ran into atv hunters and they took out hundreds of birds all around us. We do need to fine a more remote location for the challenge where we don't have so much competition.

    When I was a kid, my neighbors, who lived in essentially a big shack, had a huge rain barrel full of fish. They also ate possum, muskrat, frogs, squirrels, pigeons, and similar wild meats. This was normal. They also had a huge garden that covered more than half their corner lot, including the best peaches anywhere on earth. My dad helped them tend the garden (they were elderly) in exchange for half the produce. Strangely perhaps, we kids developed an insatiable taste for fresh spring lettuce sandwiches with butter and sugar. The old couple chewed tobaccy like there was no tomorrow, and of course we, as barefoot little kids, had to be careful where we walked to avoid the slimey old chaws. One day two well-dressed motorcycle riders showed up at the old couple's house. They each had motorcycles that looked like they were 15 feet long and plated in gold. Every imaginable accessory was on those bikes, and you could see a mile into the riders' black boots, they were so shiny. Turns out, they were family members of our neighbors, and part owners of Harley-Davidson. Go figure.

    Thank you for doing another wilderness living challenge! I sincerely enjoy watching them (I don't want to say how many times I've watched seasons 1-4, but it is definitely more than once lol, they are just great shows). Sorry there are weak minded people talking crap, and you aren't getting the views you truly deserve and earn ( I watched the video that is now removed) and have done what I can to help support you by my current means. You have such a great attitude, and I respect the hell out of ya for doing this a fifth time. I'm not able to get out and do basic camping right now, so watching these videos lets me sorta feel like I am vicariously through you. I wish it were the one positive comment that negates the 10 douchebag comments, but often times I know it is the one negative comment you can dwell on even after reading 20, You rock man, and I am stoked you are doing another series like this. Thanks again, Woodbeard. In a sea of absolute garbage content on youtube, you put out some prime, quality content. Cheers from the USA.

      Thanks for such a great note! I guess I'm frustrated more in my ability to convey what it's really like out there trying to live off the foods we are able to get - how much going without meals is a challenge for me. I'm definitely working on it and I think getting better. You're right about the 1 negative comment stinging more than all the positive ones. I find that taking time to thank people helps me focus on the great comments more, so thanks for giving me time to pause and thank you! I hope you get more time to get out there and do some camping, appreciate you supporting and watching!

    Here's an idea, now just bear with me here, what if you scaled, pan fried or coal cooked the fish, and then scrape as much meat and skin off of them as as possible. Then, you could mix it with powdered Masa, and Woodobo, then hot rock cook it into a kind of fishy crab cake. (Maybe throw some lobster in?) It would be easy to store and keep cool, and you'd get the nutrition from both the fish meat and skin, without as many sharp bits of bone.
    Ps, I'm loving this series so far, I'm subscribed to both you, and Zach, and have watched a ton of both of your content. Keep up the good work brotha! Cheers, from California :)

    I love this type of video. there are hundreds and thousand survival videos but no ( other than yours) "How to Thrive in the Wilderness" videos Excellent! I like the use of modern tools and equipment as well. It's not enough to just survive if you can't live to enjoy the experience of living off the land. One tip for you is that if you want to gain weight you are on the right track and that is CARBS. The food you were eating are high in fat and protein and you found that you maintain or lose weight. Its very much like the Keto diet and it takes time for your body to adjust to lo or no carbs before your weight stabilizes. Then you will find you stop losing weight and eat less. Great videos!!!!

    • @amandathatgirl2997
      @amandathatgirl2997 5 років тому

      gtootikian where do you find heavy carb nutrients by foraging and hunting? Out of your element? In Maine? I’m trying to think that through. Love the corn cakes. i think lots of times adequate quantity of fat can help too like rendered bear fat. Carbs are the big equalizer it’s why all or most processed foods in our country include corn or soy as top ingredients. Even cat food. Such an easy to digest and quick energy source. Keto is retraining your body until, like you said it equalizes. I will follow you on UA-cam. Do u post here a lot?

He hasn't been able to stabilize and he's eating everything he can catch, steal or take...he broke down and bought wild rice...he was getting super skinny...borederline unhealthy. And that is eating unlimited wild foods. It's just nutrient poor...unprocessed, low calorie.

It is a good lesson for everyone as to how important it is to get things prepared ahead of time. a more calorie efficient way to dip net is to tie a rope to the hoop of the net and the other end to a tree close by.
    with enough slack to dip the net in the water and hold it there under the surface, using the tension of the rope to keep it in place instead of your muscle fighting the current the tree branch will be.
    you dont have to waste energy constantly dipping at every flash you hold your net and wait for them to swim into it and pop it up when you feel one squirm. thanks very much for sharing your videos

    You can manipulate your metabolism to store fat by spiking insulin with carbohydrate consumption (which will prime the cells for storage) then eating as much fat as you can. Protein is a less efficient energy source than either fat or carbohydrates because it cost around 30% more calories to metabolize. If you eat too high protein you will lose weight and if you eat too little carbohydrates you will lose weight (both water and fat) fairly rapidly... Also, carbohydrates in the form of fructose will not spike insulin and therefore will not trigger significant fat storage other than in the liver.

    So another thing I would try after blending the fish is then laying it in strips or patties whatever shape you want lol and putting them in the smoker or dehydrator with some Woodobo. Smoked Fish jerky! Like making jerky or of burger, fish burger so you don't have to mess with the bones.
