A snow trench is a simple structure that can be built with almost no tools. A shovel and a saw comes in really handy. If you have a camp axe, you can also fashion a pretty neat rig to cook over the fire on a rock, just like a caveman.

I will also check my squirrel traps and review the trail camera footage to dissect what is working and what is not when it comes to trapping small game animals in survival. Does snaring squirrels really work, and is it effective?

Snow has a lot of insulative properties so makes a good material to make a winter survival shelter. Snow has a varied R-value depending on moisture and density. However, the average is R-value is similar to wood - 12 inches of snow is about the same as a 2x4 wall.
I will show you how to build a snow trench, which can be done quickly by shoveling a narrow space wide and long enough to lay in. After that, place bows, and branches across to cover. This is not an great shelter to protect from the rain, but works well to block wind and snow.

Can we get a week long survival challenge?
I am from Guyana South America I love your survival show. Your video is the first I started looking at and I like your style all the jokes with your wife ,you guys are a lovely couple. Here in Guyana have a lot of places to do survival
will you make a wilderness living challage again with jeremy?i like your video.
Personally, I wish you would pay no attention to the negativity people express. I enjoy your channel very much. I am happy that you have so many followers and have succeeded so well, congrats for that. With the shelter you just built, would it be practical to add an emergency blanket, with the reflective side down, between layers of branches. That would reflect back some of the heat that is rising and cut the wind and any precipitation. Just a thought. Sincerely, Dave & The Girls
Yeah, for sure! I think it's a practical add...a sleeping bag isn't much to add either, but a wool blanket and tarp would make all the world of difference. I did one like that before, and it works well.
Life isnt all a box of chocolates and roses, negative feedback can be good within reason, depending on how its worded and it's relevance.
Recommendations are one thing. Negativity is another. I recommend spruce 360 degrees then straw/grass 360 degrees like a legitimate underground style den. I always fantasize about this when I'm trying to sleep. Cheers lol
@@TimZeTerrible But so often, any contradicting opinion is labeled as negative, and the person expressing it is assaulted with shrill cries of "HATER". That's the problem with the political and social atmosphere of America today... contradicting opinions are attacked, and the speakers are threatened with the loss of livelihood, possessions, and even freedom. All for daring to believe something different.
@@maxsdad538 Well put. Dissenting arguments are stubbornly cast aside.
chris you've come so far man, ive been here since season 1 of the wilderness living challenge. congratz on your hard work dude.
Dude, that's like a century ago, thanks for sticking with me.

Same here, one of my favorite channels, definetly top two.
Same - I remember starting my corporate job in 2016 back when I first came across this channel. And can you believe it, I haven't caught up to his income stream 😭 I think about that all the time.
Cheers from Arkansas!
@@rhettmelton me too lol...I started watching around the same time when I got a job sitting in an office all day. been Helping me get my mind out of my cubicle for years lol
Greetings from the warmth of Morocco. I am homebound due to a calf strain, so your videos make my days worthwhile. Thanks chris
Get well!
Fun fact, Canada shares geography with Morocco all the way too Sierra Leone,. It it was millions of years ago and an ocean built between us, but the land and rocks are actually similar at their base, however the glaciers basically stripped a lot of the features down ., But if we somehow were the people we are now, but without the geographical changes, you could drive here in a few hours
I love how he just goes on a rant about food for a few minutes it was my favorite part😂😂

I'll share my shovel

Lol aw that is witty
They lied on the label? :)

Your content is entertaining af, both you and your brother are hilariously funny , way better than any crap on tv.
Your channel cures my depression, I love everything you do man!
Full stop. A shovel is like a wooden plank with a handle. Why would anyone have a problem with that?
30:54 that moment you're about to barf but the universe tells you to still go in and take one big last whiff just to be sure you never forget....lol
I had to make sure...now I regret it hahahah
Also going for a fast close sniff always helps lol

Nice!
Thank you for going out in the woods for us. I always pay close attention and learn something.
you are living your life, actually doing stuff that the majority just fantasise about, you shouldnt let the negative comments effect you at all
Haha, the coyote scent bit was hilarious
Ugh dude, why does it smell like rotting!!! :)
Full stop, I have always wanted to see you build a pump fire drill, that would be awesome because many people don't know about them. Keep the awesome videos coming.
Hmmmm, I've never tried that one!
It's easy to criticize sitting at your home under warm bed and blankets in a dark room to say that knowing and doing is 2 whole different concepts
There will always be keyboard warriors who know EVERYTHING.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I really enjoy your videos!
Of course, there will always be complainers!! Some people complain like it's their job-- even when it isn't. I however, am a 54 year old woman who lives in the desert, and I love what you do (all of it). No complaints here.✌

Love the vids.
I wonder if she'll catch that if she watches :)
@@TheWoodedBeardsman you mentioned wanting to try and trap one of each species available in the area, great idea I think (the views and experiences of a new trapper).......maybe take each species and do a three part series on ......(pt-1 the technique your be using....traps,snares) (pt-2 skinning or processing the hide/fur) and (pt- 3 cleaning, cooking and finally eating) Just an idea or maybe challenge. #1- I definitely want a video on a years worth of survival tools.
#2- I love these humane no kill traps
#3- What makes more sense? A house with no heat source or survival shelter with a fire? Asking with Texas in mind.
Haven't checked out your channel in a little while, glad to see you're still doing good!
I have learned so much from your videos. I appreciate you doing this. Keep up the great work. Enjoy your content fellow Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 neighbor. Thank you. 😊
You give new meaning to walk the dog. Lol😁😁😁

Man, that stuff IS NASTY! I thought it would smell more like dog pheromones or something, not like absolute death!!
Forget the negative commenting people... why would someone who don’t think you should harvest natures resources even watch a nature survival video in the first place?!?! Ranting about the negative comments isn’t you. Keep up the great videos I am a subscriber and look forward to all your videos.
Do what you do. The young ones love the ideas. And they are out doing it to play. Back in the day we called that learning... before you have to do it for survival. Keep up the work. And stay safe my friend.
I used to trap for fox and coon. I always boiled my traps in black die and wax, but not bee's wax. When I set my traps I always had gloves on to cover up my sent and even put a pad down to Neil on so I wouldn't leave my sent behind. I like your camp set up. Great video
I didn't even know that this video was this long it just flew by love your videos can't wait for the next one to come out
Thanks Cobra!
I loved every part of this video except when you were talking with a mouth full of food😂
In the military they teach us to use pine branches as your flooring to keep you warm and provide added comfort and insulation from the cold.
Haha this is great watching you almost lose your breakfast over the scent 😄 the guy that eats anything haha!!! Love it!!
OMG and it was on my hands!!!
It had to of been bad!! I've seen the videos of the fish feeder and that wouldn't of been great either but clearly nothing on that stuff haha.
I laughed so hard when you were putting that smelly stuff by the coyote trap! I loved this whole video and thanks for the laugh! Thanks for all the survival tips
This had the funniest moment over seen yet, and I've watched a lot of these. I really dont ever wanna smell that crap you used 🤣🤣🤣
Hey man you worry to much about other peoples opinion your are one of the most epic people I have ever seen you have the skills to do things other people would dream about keep up the good work
Howdy don't care what other people think or say i love your channel. And what you are doing is exactly what thy elders use to do. Again love your youtube channel
If you can take it, an axe, shovel, and tarp are great in winter. And don't let people bug you, it's better to know a lot of different ways to do the same thing. If you can use a sled do it! Variety is the spice of life!
Spruce boughs for your bedding is a great tip. Spruce/fir boughs always made a great sit pad while hunting (If you didn't mind getting a little pitch on you) BTW: vegetable oil works great to get pitch off your skin/clothes. Then use soap to get the oil off.
I’d definitely try coyote! Save me that last piece. 🤪
Anything with Woodobo is good
It’s 31 minutes in and I’m am so grateful that I don’t have “smella -vision”. I don’t think I want to smell that stuff. Hello from Sydney, Australia
Here in Newfoundland we have a saying “ put a loon and a beach rock in a pot and when the loon is done ,throw away the loon and eat the beach rock” love the videos tho keep them coming
I'm happy you're growing in views again! You deserve it all!
Thanks, I did want to do more challenges this year compared to last, so that's helping keep everything interesting.

Ur vids are great man plz dont stop being cool. Keeps a bunch of us inspired n hopeful.
Texas needs this info .
THANK YOU
Good luck out there!
Hey Chris. I agree with everything you are saying!!. Shovel FTW!! Coyote have thrived partly due to the fact they will reproduce more, the more they are hunted. They will have more litters/bigger litters if their population is stressed.
Ignore the few negative comments, you have more supporters who want to see you enjoy what you love to do ❤️
Nice again new vid love your content, as kid I was in love with get out in wild becouse of my grandpa but he past away and getting older I start to getting less time for camp. And your vids help me get out there when I have time and remind me good times with grandpa. Thanks man.

I love how you are always pushing for something new withing your content but still stay within the survival and hunting/snaring genra
That scent scene LOL. I never thought I'd see you get grossed out. As for those negative comments, post a video of how you build shelters and move snow without or shovel. Better yet, don't comment and make your own channel. Keep up the great content, I enjoy your videos and learn a lot from them.

Thanks to sponsor. Kudos in the effort. Thanks to the thirty thousand views since yesterday.... the 19th.
I checked the official “Do Your Own Challenge Outdoor Rules Handbook” and you are allowed to use a shovel. Some people will just complain about anything no matter what you do. Everything you do outside does not need to be a struggle or a hardship. Doing this stuff is also about having fun and enjoying the outdoors.
Nice video and thanks for the entertainment. I enjoyed watching as usual. I think the people telling you how to do things outside are probably people who do nothing outside LOL! Keep doing what you do. Watching from Maryland, US.
Well said!
Chris you're awesome and have taught me many things! I'm sure that is your goal. Ignore the naysayers and "The Know it alls"! Just keep doing what you are doing because most of us love it! Thank You
I know you don't live in the woods, you have a home in the suburbs somewhere in Canada. Give us survival/tips on what we should do in an emergency situation at home. Earthquake, flood, you know what I'm talking about. A snow storm or ice storm in the City. Like what Texas is going through
Welcome to this weeks episode of shovel talk with the wooded beardsman. Tune in next week for ( fun with bark ! )
So I heard something for the coyote legs.
1 - Blanch the legs to remove fur
2 - Stir fry it with LOTS of sliced ginger until you see the meat starting to burn a bit (Sliced or whole leg IDK, try both =D )
3 - Add water until you cover or more to stew the meat, let the flames simmer but not boil for 30 mins (more ginger for getting rid of smell if you like)
4 - Check for toughness, see if it's too chewy/tough. If so you can add water and keep simmer till enough.
5 - Add all your seasoning, garlic/soy sauce/whatever but we all know its going to be Woodobo.
I enjoy these survival situations
Man screw all the “professional woodsman” that just wanna spout off at the hip. Their only profession is trying to bring other people down! I love this channel and I’ve learned so much in a short amount of time. Keep doing you brother and keep that content coming cause I watch every episode! God bless and tight lines!
Chris, you can make a shovel. But trolls don't understand or care. When it comes real survival. This information is sound and can save lives. That is most important. I look at these videos you make as basic training. Field experience is required to hone those skills. I already know almost all of the stuff you teach. But you make it enjoyable to watch anyway. Plus when you don't have a set way to do something, happy accidents happen. This is how over and over again. The student can teach the master.
Yeah, I like when you mess things up and it turns out better!
dude love your videos started watching them when i couldn't sleep due to anxiety and panic attacks and well carried on ever since so thanks for providing entertainment when i really needed it
Ignore the negative comments Bro, you're putting out good content. You're reaction to the scent made my week!
Musk rat is delicious, but "heavy" red meat. It has the short fibrous texture typical for game. Recommend :p
Gotta love some warm coyote!
@33:04 "... 'cause I don't want the trail camera to be a factor for me to be loosing my lunch..."
No fear of that happening, I'm pretty sure the bait in the black bottle already took care of that... LOL
Watched from Full to stop And loved every minute of it I can't believe you didn't hear those coyotes going crazy in the middle of the night
Never even thought about eating coyote meat but now it's on my radar that looked delicious!

Full Stop. Thanks for expending the effort and taking us along.
Nice video everybody loves backstrap’s
After all these years I'm finally getting my woodobo spice.
I've seen what you eat bro. Your reaction to the lure nearly killed me
Who the fk doesn't bring a shovel with them in the backcountry during the dead of winter?? I'm not a super experienced hunter or trapper (though I'd love to be), but I have a hell of a lot of backcountry thru-hiking experience and at least one or two people in our group carried a fold-out shovel. Ignore the hate comments Chris (easier said than done, I know), you're teaching and inspiring many of us!
Just popped up, and I had to watch it, I'm not disappointed.
Best meat i ever had was Backstrap of beaver. It was friggin amazing. I also use cast iron all the time, even in house. Just got to learn that it holds heat longer then anything else. And don't cook on high.
The shovel was the perfect idea especially when it can fit in ur back pack
great video, I watched it with pleasure. I am waiting for more😎👍
I gotta say... this is one of the few times I've seen you be salty about somebody's comment this much... "dark side, where you carry a shovel!" You indulge in some well-earned disgruntlement, sir. You're so positive and genial so often you're sure allowed it.
I didn’t figure you’d ever eat coyote again. Better luck with the rat trap on the squirrel huh. Ha!😂love the shovel imitation. Reminds me of that 21 jump street, my name is Jeff 🤣 rad show here man. Thanks.😃🍺🤙🔥
hahah
Coon Creek is great, and so is Trapper J. There is even a young boy called Grow Outdoor Jack. He started trapping to protect the chicken he raises. I watch all three. I trap dumped dogs in Detroit. I get them to a vet, get them healthy, work with them, and find forever homes. Trapping animals is not all the same, but I have used some ideas from these channels.
That's awesome Robin, good job!

Working on it!
I respect when he went in for another sniff even though he was gagging.
Really thought you were gonna upchuck, then take another snort. Brave fella.
I remember last year the camera scared them away from the live trap , don't you worry the same will happen again?
For sure. If I notice the cam messes things up, I'll have to pull it. I checked today and one yote came through, didn't check the baits or anything.
Great video. I learn something every time. Thanks so much. Hope you have a great day.
You sound so much happier in your voice and energy lately and I love that you add more humor as well. I always enjoy your videos, but I just wanted to say that. :)
Idk much about trapping but i do know for a fact the animals will look out for your tracks and scent so you have to mask both to be effective just some tips to help
YES! Been waiting all morning for the video😂😂
Another very cool video amigo. I would like to know, perhaps in the next video, if you were successful in trapping a coyote. Be safe and cool out Chris. Cheers from Virginia, Ken.
Thanks Ken. I got my 2 other traps out today finally.
I believe you use little wooden houses to catch mink along the river kind of the same as a pine marten but you actually put the little wooden box on the ground with the luer and Tiny foothold trap inside.
