- DIGITAL INKING INSIGHTS - THE 3 STEP INKING PROCESS
Well after gulping down way too many mugs of coffee… I’ve finally finished editing, compiling and uploading a brand-spankin’ NEW Comic Art tutorial for you!
This must be some kind of record - 2 Comic Art tutorials in 2 weeks? Is this real?
Yup, it’s real - And in this Comic Art tutorial we'll be jumping into Manga Studio where you’re going to learn all about digitally inking and rendering darker tones and materials, whether it be for superhero costumes made of skin-tight lycra, or brunette colored hair do’s.
But that’s not all!
You’re also going to get an in-depth look at the 3 step digital inking process I follow to achieve consistent and predictable results in my comic book illustration.
Plus a bunch of other neat digital inking tips and tricks.
There’s also a surprise announcement (+ a very important update) about the upcoming Proportions Lesson from How to Draw Comics at the end of the video. You’re not going to want to miss it either, so make sure you watch it right through to the end.
As always, enjoy!

Thanks a lot. I appreciate the kind words! I'll do my best to keep these coming on a regular basis ;)
reminds me of the great Michael Turner(RIP) style, love it man!
Jesus, I think I've been going too far down the rabbit hole, I swear I thought you were gonna say, "I've taught hundreds of students across multiple universes" xD
yes! Another inking video thank you Clayton!
You're welcome man! Hope you like it :D -Clayton
14:00 But how do you know where to put the shadows?
Edit: You can use ArtPose for guidance
WOW this is a big help.. for artists like me who wants to improve. thanks man.
Hey man, thanks a lot! You're very welcome and I'm super glad this helped you out. :) -Clayton
This was really helpful, thank you!
Your video is incredibly helpful. Thank you for sharing :)
You're welcome. Thanks for watching. :) -Clayton
Thanks for the new great video
Hey, you're welcome man! Hope you enjoyed it. :) -Clayton
Thank you so much for sharing! But what is the music at the end ?
The character on the right has a very similar style to Aspen Comics publications.
I like it!
Michael Turner is an amazing artist, and a huge influence on my style. So thanks for that! And thanks for watching, I hope you enjoyed the video. :) -Clayton
May I ask what input device for drawing digitally you're using?
rendering is my achilles heel. I just dont know where to put cast shadows and dark areas sometimes.
will you ever make a video on rendering?
AMAZING!!!!, which photoshop brushes did you use?
I have such a problem inking in photoshop. On paper no problem but digitally its hard. Can u do a tutorial on the ink brush u created?
I've had the same problem as you, and Photoshop i just not good for lineart imo. I tried other programs, like Manga Studio(the one he's using) and Paint Tool Sai, and they are 1000 times easier and better than PS. I can produce good lineart in Sai with my 10+ years old Wacom Graphire 4 running on 2 drives(orginal drive can't run on Win10 lol), that's how good it is.
thanks
No worries Mitesh. Thanks for watching. :)
Maybe is a stupid question but....you use a pen (i mean a pen that can be use in a tablet) or a mousse?
You stupid
I have pixelated lines left by inking brushes in Clip Studio. I tried to use strong anti-aliasing, but it doesn't solve the problem completely. The thing is when I zoom in, lines appear to be smooth, and when I zoom out they appear to be pixelated/jagged. I tried working with 600 dpi and 300 dpi, but it doesn't influence it that much. I've been digging for the solution to this problem for a long time, but I haven't succeed. Please, help me, if you've faced such kind of problem. Is it worth it to try to cope with this effect, or it's something I shouldn't be concerned about to much?
Are you working with a canvas big enough?, probably a bigger canvas like 3840 x 2160 pixels could help you, normally when I work with small pages the pixelated lines happens, that's why I prefer big pages to draw on any software.
@@jocrek I used to work with a small one, but recently I've tried to work with 3800x4900. It decreased this effect, but sometimes it's still visible
Inking by holding down brush and dash stroke.
25:00 Who is a comic book artist that has an easy to learn and quick to do style of rendering? I care more about getting things done OK quickly than meticulous detail. It can be someone more cartoony also
Fernando Ruiz art. Alan Davis. Steve Rude
it almost looks like half her lower torso/hip is missing, i dont feel the other side of the hip, far side
triggerhappy0404 my perception
Yeah, her right leg really bothers me. It looks like it's connected to her stomach _above_ the hip. I may get DAZ out and try to replicate this pose. All that being said, Jack Kirby did all sorts of crazy stuff and it never stopped *_him!_*
what software and tools, please?
Manga studio 5 (now Clip Studio Paint)
can you make video of drawing womans head
do you speak spanish?
4:43 "guist?" That word is "gist," with a soft "g."
You know these Aussies! They pronounce "urine" as "YER-ayen."
