  • How to remove and replace a leaking tub drain. Silicone sealant works better than putty for this job. Some are easier than others and sometimes you need to replace the whole waste and overflow assembly if old threads get damaged. The tub drain removal wrench can be found at most hardware stores. #bathtub #tips #tools

    I am using a quality Silicone meant for kitchen & bathrooms. I use putty on sink drains & silicone on tub/shower drains that will be concealed. Most leaks I have fixed on tub drains are due to cracked dried up putty. Applied properly silicone will outlast putty in my experience. You may disagree and that's okay, we all want the same thing here, no Leaks!

      In the UK its rare to see any plumbers putty being used anymore. Quality silicone is a far better method widely used here.

      I'm am currently about to install a shower pan, is there a brand you use for shower drains? I see so many silicones in the store website. I haven't chosen the tube of silicone I'm going to use because not one video states a specific silicone.

    If your tub will let you, plumber's putty might be a better option. (I'm aware that some fiberglass/acrylic tubs can't work with putty).

    The silicone that caused it to leak in the first place

    I wish there was some consensus on silicone vs putty. UA-cam is loaded with experts who tell you one thing, with just as many telling you something else

    would it b better to let the silicone dry for a couple min. then tighten all the way, to make the silicone b more like a gasket/silicone to keep it lasting for decades?

      Should go between the tub and the tub drain.

    Silicone makes the job suck for the next guy… doesn’t matter if it’s to fix plumbing or to demo and remove, the job will be more difficult.

    Plumbers putty is how plumbers do it, diy handyman uses silicone

      Disagree, yes l am a handyman but l am also a Journeyman plumber over 20 years. I use putty on sink drains only, quality silicone on tubs & shower drains & never had an issue.

      @djcarbontt 11 місяців тому +1

      Didn’t mean it’s the better solution. Nor does it mean that it’s right. Part of why you may never have gotten an issue for the 20 years is because you don’t get the call back.
      Fix it once and fail I’m not calling back for you to do the same thing twice.

    Do not use silicone!!!

    • @JENSENDIY
      @JENSENDIY  Рік тому +4

      What do you suggest using? I have been plumbing for over 20 years, installed many tubs and showers using a good quality silicone on the drains instead of putty and never had a call back for a leak. Most tub leaks I have come across have been because of dried up plumbers putty.

    I’ve never heard anyone claim silicone is better than plumbers putty. Silicone smells, is hard to clean up, and will fail much sooner than putty

      No, l do care. Did you read my comment on why and when l use silicone? I happen to be a journeyman plumber, I use putty for certain applications and silicone for others.
