Aah the good old copper washer. Back a few years ago when i was still learning on a 1.9 astra d, a misfire and a slightly smoky engine took me ages and a day to fix my mate heard the compression leaking from the copper injector seal on no2, A new set of seals later for all 4 and the original misfire went and the car flew like a dream. It is still going today. The Owner said "one of the boys" did change 1 injector a month before but didnt know what one. But for the smoking it amazed me a seal made the difference.
Leon, quick update, removed the injectors on my daughters TD4, cleaned everything as best I could but had to replace the old ones as the servicing company couldn't refurbish them during my short trip...after replacing everything(giving the injectors a bit of a brush up on the outside) the car ran brilliantly on the test drive but the next day 'died' on me...same as your client I guess. Will only be able to replace the worst injectors (did a leak back test) in pairs not all at once..can't afford it but thanks to your video we are moving forwards....Cheers Buddy...(all the cheap fixes have been done up to this point...)
JEEP is not a generic term is a brand name, which has been adopted to describe a 4x4. Similar to people saying that there hovering, instead of vacuuming Hoover is a brand name of a vacuum cleaner. Thus Jeep is a brand name of a 4x4 as is a Land Rover. Look at the centre of a steering wheel on either vehicle, and its a bit of a giveaway.
1970chevelle396 hi mate thanks for watching yes there is lots of diesels in Ireland especially nyleen they don't really like petrol engines for some reason they prefer diesels you would struggle to find a bigger than a 2L petrol engine in Ireland where the UK is completely different and America is definitely different lol
Nice video, I never done this test, nice to learn something new. To clean the injector seat we have a special tool that has blades and cuts the crap out of there. Makes it really easy and fast
David S. Hi mate thanks for watching yes I know that all you on about I'm going to be doing a video call with you on it shortly thanks a lot for watching
Leak off testers only test the top internal part of the injector for excessive leaking where the pressure builds in the injector, i only use leak off testers on engines that struggle to start i,e from excessive leak back in the top portion of the injector causing the injector to take a while to build the required pressure to fire resulting in delayed starting, when an engine runs poorly and you suspect the injectors at fault its the mid to lower portion of the injector and they have to be differently using a pop tester to test the nozzles for blockage, spray pattern and leakage from the lower portion of the injector, for instance the number 4 injector thats leaking back could be fine at the nozzle whereas one of the other 3 that have no excessive leak back could have blocked or leaking nozzles.
Hi mate I've used this test lots of times and it's never put me wrong this is what I like about UA-cam people making comments especially other ways of testing things I love learning new ways and new tips I know that tool you are talking about and it is something I've been looking to get I'm going to look into it a lot more now thanks a lot for your comment much appreciated
nice video even though it's 7yrs old etc, each line on the bottle 2.5ml most times run test for 2mins, and you are looking for no more than 20ml over that time, the test kits are really cheep too.
Seriously I would never have bought a diesel if I had known the cost and problems with Injectors. Most people were singing the praises of diesels. My jeep has 5 bosch injectors 800euros EACH to replace new !
Could u elaborate on the flow meter hookup for those of us that normally only work on gasoline non direct injection? We don't have all those fancy ports on top. Can't understand how u get pintel leak readings from the top of injectors.
Get your hands dirty - mate you were covered from head to toes LOL Our diesel across the pond is much yellower . Nice one Leon . Keep up the great vids. Cheers
Great video Leon! I wasn't sure how your flow tester was hooked up. It looked like there was a separate port on each injector where you screwed each line. And how did the fuel return as it looked like you had it pinched off? If you could elaborate on those two points would be appreciated. Thanks for the video Leon!
stuzman hi mate thanks a lot for watching I'm going to do a separate video on this as I'm getting a lot of questions about it and I think it's just easier to answer them and set it up in a video will get it up shortly

Hi Leon, I have one of these jeeps lol. It starts from cold ok, bit is sluggish for first few mins and sounds like it's missing slightly for a few seconds. When warm it won't start straight away, and then smokes like this one in your video. I have checked pressures on scan tool. They match this one, I've changed fuel filter and put new genuine lift pump on. I bought a leak off test and in 2 mins of running it half filled these bottles 3 injectors both at 5 on bottle, 1 on 5.5. does that seem excessive to you? I'm thinking injectors are stuffed
I did that test on mine and all filled aloft 2 4 files more but they was rebuilt les than 5k miles ruth kn tick over will it be injectors or something else please some advice that's reason car not used smoke bad
Hi mate just because they were rebuilt 5000 miles ago means absolutely nothing you can buy Brand Spanking New injectors and they can be faulty personally what I would do is I will go to somebody with slightly different equipment and let them test it
Nifty flow tester... each injector has 2 return fittings? You attached the tester to one fitting of each injector... yes? Was the second fitting plugged or were they all still attached to each other? Just trying to picture the flow of the return (I know you plugged it, but can't picture how you kept them all separate). Link to the tester rig?
Thomas EXOVCDS hi mate I'm going to do a separate tool video and this as I'm getting a lot of questions about it but basically the injectors only have one return pipe on them you have to remove the return hose and pinch it off then you place the hose for each bottle on top of one of the injectors the return flow will then go into each bottle I hope that makes sense the tool review video should clear it up a lot more
It makes sense... I was just trying to picture how I would attach on a VW (ALH). All injectors are attached in series on the return ports. I think all I would have to do is isolate them from each other, cap one pipe per injector and run the other to the tester. Sooorted!
great video! Question.....the PID you monitored for fuel rail pressure.....would it show pressure with just low pressure pump on rather than having to plumb in pressure gauge?
Hi mate I'm not sure on what you are saying but I think if I'm correct like explaining the video you need to go off the lowest one make sure the bottles at least 50% full preferably 75% if there is 10% difference between the lowest one you have an injector issue
Just thinking about another video you posted about the Mondeo, when testing the system you fitted an inline filter to stop any metal filings etc. Would you recommend fitting an inline filter to the low pressure side of the fuel system before the high pressure side as preventative measure? My daughters TD4 will have a OEM full filter fitted in a couple of weeks when I get back from Spain anyway but a small line filter?? In addition? Any thoughts?
Malcolm Young hi mate I only put an inline filter in when I am flushing out the injectors and the pump with the cleaning fluid you don't need to put an inline filter from the low pressure pump as there is one in your engine bay the diesel filter that will be sufficient enough to use
10:40 just wondering what it is about an older more worn pump that gives a rougher waveform. Is it wear on the commutator of the motor, or mechanical wear on the pump mechanism, or something else? Thanks!
jix177 hi mate yes it's the commutator that it measures it's a really quick and easy way to see the condition of the motor without having to take it out
I put 2005 Diesel injectors in my 2008 Fiesta and ever since it's been smoking a lot of black? Wrong injectors or is it normal when first swapping injectors with new seals etc?
8ile a little bit of black smoke wouldn't be a problem at start-up you need to make sure it's the right injector and I am pretty sure on them ones that will also need to be coded in once an injector is not coded properly you can get all sorts of problems
Hy i have a that problem but with my freelander 2005 td4 but only when the engine is cold when is warm no more blue smoke , what do you think it is the problem thanks
You will have to get the system tested properly I don't want to say something to you and ends up costing you an absolute fortune changing something you don't need but before you test anything I would advise you to get a new diesel filter
Any chance of looking at my videos - I have the m57 engine 155k miles and getting lots of smoke like this. However, my leak down test was pretty even - Leak back - idle 6 mins Cyl 6 18ml (3ml per min) Cyl 5 16ml (2.6ml) Cyl 4 16ml (2.6ml) Cyl 3 16ml (2.6ml) Cyl 2 15ml (2.5ml) Cyl 1 18ml (3ml) Leak back 5 mins cycle 6 - 14ml 5 - 13ml 4 - 13ml 3 - 11ml 2 - 14ml Any advice would be great 👍
Hi mate I did not see any video on your channel with a leak down test did I miss it just cos you're getting smoke doesn't the same mean it's your injectors you have to look at lots of things airflow leeks EGR valve the list goes on

Only thing left now is valve seals, but didn’t think they went bad on turbo diesels? At 155k miles

Serge Simonov I've had problems with them translate before I think this is what you're on about hopefully I am correct you need to use a low amp probe on a circuit buddy which then is connected to the fuse the low amp probe is connected to your oscilloscope this will show you current ramp test of the pump
