➫ HI!
I am an actor and content creator with Hollywood credits including roles on Lucifer (Netflix), Starlight Christmas (Hallmark), JT Leroy (Universal Studios), etc. In this channel, I offer insight to Kpop performances using my 10+ years of training in dance, acting, singing and overall performance. In dance, my forte are contemporary and musicals and have done most of my performances in theatre. Although my channel is mostly known for dance analysis, I am currently inactive in the dance community.
I love seeing how far he's come. As others have said, Minghao's background is in b-boying but I'm so glad he's had the freedom experiment with his styles. He's so talented and can really pull off any style
He's actually start from just a random smart diligent kid who got nice scors in his school but he bored and kind of sick as i remember, he said he was such a weak kid.. then he ask his parent to learn martial art to be strong and doing some other arties things bcs it looks cool. Their parent gladly let him doing that rather push his son to do better in school. Then later his coach or somthing know how to b-boy and teach him that too. He has potential so the teacher/coach make a group b-boy out of his students from martial art club and join some competition. Minghao was the leader of his friend, his team won many competition and appear on national chinese tv program. Then he join international competition too. The last competition he join was in abroad when he met pledis staff when they scouting new trainees. Then he become trainee along with svt and debut as a shy and ackward member who look cute. And look here he is now. I'm proud of him.
Sheila Vaidyanathan we love dedication and versatility 💯
@@fie97 I thought he start learning martial art since 3 or 4 years old, he mentioned that at Knowing brother
@@lrskmp oh, yes he said that. For my sourch it was when I read in his post cards when carats ask them. And it has been some years so maybe my mind confused me. Thanks
The lyrics that he wrote is his own story when going through a hard time. Appreciate him so muchhhhhhh
I heard that the lyrics are about his struggles and hard times like when he first came to Korea not knowing how to speak the language, not being able to eat the food, getting pretty homesick, and his doubt of debuting with seventeen and just being unsure of himself in general and it actually shows in the dance that he's going through something that's not good. But look at him now, he's come so far and he's such an amazing artist and person 🤍.
Janay J awwww that’s so wholesome
Even though I was so emotional after watching this video with tears in my eyes
After reading your comment about how he first came to Korea reminded me of what Jun did to him on their first meeting and I laughed !
tbh, i don’t know the meaning but i cry when i watch and listen that, i got the feel omg 😭😭😭 i love the 8
Nurul aisyah Assari The song and The8’s voice are just so beautiful you can’t help but cry when listening too 😭😭
Theres actually a comment in the official video where the lyrics is translated. 🥰🥰
Oh we same 😭😭 I cry too
It’s a pretty emotional piece!
i think for the first time we've seen him doing fully contemporary solo was this year with his contemporary art cover to Billie Eilish "idontwannabryouanymore". you can find it on seventeen's channel as "[The 8 contemporary art] Doodle Diary". you should definitely react to it one day. it's really new to him, but lets be honest - he slays.
+ i've seen many carats telling you to react to "getting closer" next, but i think that after "hit" and "fear" we should take a break from darker concept and maybe see something different? "aju nice" and "clap" are what i'm recommending
he'll be watching almost everything from them, he has a list on his community tab :)
Yess aju nice and clap are so cool
Haha I’m doing Getting Closer next but I can do a light one after that 😁
For all Carats watching this I've been thinking about joining the fandom for awhile after Seungkwan and Woozi caught my eye but after this video.........I'm stanning
Woww Hi there baby Carat 👋
you're slipping in the diamond life
Yesss join us!! Also Seungkwan is my bias so I gotta say....TASTE for noticing him
Welcome to the diamond life💎
Welcome to the diamond life! You'll never regret your choice!
Minghao is such a talented dancer.
I think you'd love My I which is a duo with Minghao and Jun. It's such a unique dance and they work so well together
Sheila Vaidyanathan YESSS MY I
I literally held my breath for the whole performance ngl...
ily khj MOOD
idk when he starting getting invested into contemporary dance but he has being more into his art, reading, wine and calm instrumental music, like jazz, these past like 2 years, so his interest into contemporary dance kind of makes sense to me 😅 And he did the My I dance with Jun, in 2017, which has some contemporary elements on the dance
Wow what a classy gentleman 💯
Omg this is the third time I see you in comments 😂
the lyrics to this song are just so gorgeous and sad at the same time. minghao is one of the most impressive people in industry. man...
Imagine this... SM and Pledis are actually having huge plan for The8 + Winwin + Ten..
Yo yall both nct and seventeen are my ultimate groups i wasn't including those three above without any reasons. I do acknowledge the performance unit jun-hoshi-the8-dino and ncy dancer line winwin-yuta-jisung-jeno-jaemin n everyone. Guess yall just don't get the point. Watch LOVELY dance cover by winwin and ten it'll explain everything. Thanks 💚💕💙
Sri rizki Magfirah not the cross over we deserve but the crossover we need
SUPPORTING THE IDEA
why not also include jun
With Kai too
YESS that'll be LEGENDARY
I read a translation of the lyrics (though not an official one) and it seems like the song is expressing the loneliness and difficulties of being an idol. I watched a lyric video alongside the music video so I could see the lyrics at the same time as the dance performance and it really helped me see the meaning in the song and interpret some parts of the dance better.
7:46 this looked like drinking
7:58 this pose looks like sleeping. I think he was showing himself going through the motions of life: eating, drinking, sleeping
8:58 I like your idea of a compass and I also thought it could maybe be a clock
12:34 I interpreted this part as him trying to hide from the spotlight of fame-- he is trying to block out the literal spotlight that is on him in the video
12:42 this is about trying to escape, he mentions "escape" a lot in the lyrics
12:47 he's trying to fly away, it could be escape again, but his "wings" aren't working
I think it could really be symbolizing a compass, it was my first thought and it could symbolize being lost
When I first watched it I thought the “compass” was supposed to symbolize a broken propeller.. the compass makes much more sense though
Oh great interpretation too! I just based it off what I read from the description of the song off Twitter 😁
He's the eighth wonder of the world!
MY OWN ANALYSIS :
I think the man at his back is his shadow or other self. At first the shadow follows her or vice versa then after a while he falls down and the man catch him , which means he somehow wants to do other things than usual or to breakthrough .. theres a scene where they are like fighting .. and when the man disappeared you can see his struggle ..
I think its his story from him being a normal boy then leaving China to chase his dreams and while reaching that dream ofcourse there are so many struggles or hardship which symbolizes his trainee years away from where he from.
sorry for my english.. its just my opinion. love your reaction Jeff.. ❤
Lovely Orapa great interpretation!
I think the shadow is his weakness, his flaws and he doesn’t want it following him. But he realizes he has to accept it. When blue lighting come up whenever the shadow pops up. Blue means freedom, loyalty, confidence, wisdom, trust. Connecting to body and soul. The last part is like he’s being reborn. The crawling like how a baby would do with his fingers up curiously looking up into the world for the first time and it’s legs moving. He’s being reborn and learned to accept his flaws. The shadow is not another person, minghao and the shadow is one.
When I watched it last night I AUTOMATICALLY thought to myself, “Jeff HAS to see this!” AND I AM SO GLAD THAT YOU DID!!! Bless everyone who suggested this! I really wanted your input on it so I can understand a little more and I am not disappointed AT ALL. This song and choreography really takes you somewhere. I cried after watching this. I really had to take a minute. It’s beyond beautiful 😭😭😭😭
Jan Roberta the amount of messages I got on social media haha. Y’all came thru!
I am, extremely proud of Minghao 🥺 he grown and reborn beautifully after his back injury on 2017
I'm crying, thanks for your analysis ♡
I'm getting into svt with you through these reactions but wow his vocals are so gorgeous like overall he's such a gorgeous person definitely going to look into him
Natalie glad I can spread the interest!
when you said, "it's usually a woman" i realized that the opposite is usually the case in Korea... it has always been an enigma for me because a lot of koreans are conservative (speaking of the majority not everyone) so they do not approve of same sex relationships, yet male idols get hounded if they are even seen with a female... because of this whenever i see any performance, more often than not, guys will dance with guys and girls will dance with girls... sorry if this didn't make any sense
I believe it's more of a kpop/idol thing and not really in dancing because dance is a way of art too and that is not something that a simpleton can just say whatever they want. Since this is Minghao telling a part of his story life, makes sense to have a male dancer to support him to project his consciousness and, technique wise, help him do the lifts.
I believe it makes more sense at least in this choreography that it is a male because normally the female is the one being pulled up, twirling, and stuff, but here it is Minghao and naturally (generally) a man is stronger to hold someone like the dancer did at the very end.
of course it is a stylistic decision for the artist but i’m just saying, an idol will more likely dance with a same sex partner than the other
@@angel123-k1r it's c-pop and in cpop you can often see male idols dancing with female dancers. minghao had few performances with female dancers himself so it's not the case here
Ohh I see what you mean! Yeah so different from the west lol
Jeff to Minghao: This guys is just so amazing.
YES WE STAN MULTI-TALENTED MAN, Imagine Minghao can sing, dance well, photography, painting and a lot of stuff, I'm so soft for Minghao. The fact that I always have goosebumps whenever I listen to The8's Fall Down. Man he is just so perfect, I just can't believe that a Man like him does exist.
OH MY GOD YESSS when he released this last night the first thing i thought of was that i REALLY wanna see you reacting to this,, and here you are :) it's so great to see how minghao has grown as a dancer and how he's continuing to grow. he's truly a very inspiring and talented person
This was such a beautifully crafted masterpiece! I legit love the song and his voice sounds perfect for it and of course, such elegant dancing! The8 truly has ∞ (infinite) potential!
The fact that I was literally hypnotised the whole dance and that my mind wasn't in the room anymore just says it all
I swear everything around me disappeared and I felt like I was just there watching him dance...
I was honestly waiting for your review. You always come in with the technical explanations and also share your interpretation of the piece. Thank you for breaking it down for us mere mortals. Plus, I love the imageries you've picked on like the compass, i thought it was just a representation of the instability he feels when he was experiencing his darkness, but giving the compass comparison is amazing and gives more depth.
Also if you need other recommendations, My I, The8's Doodle Diary and Dino's Danceology are the non main releases of the performance unit.
Yeeees so excited for this. I love the atmosphere of this song, from the visuals to the music to his vocals to his dancing. I'm so happy to see how much Minghao has grown over the years
while i was watching this, i didn't understand anything & i've never really focused on dance, but i felt so emotional while watching this. i find it so amazing how art can make a person feel so many emotions, even if we don't understand anything.
This mv make me cry so much. This is art !!!
Through out the whole choreography all I could think was how beautifully his arms move and how lightweight he must be! But in general it's a really emotional performance and I think that even people with no knowledge about contemporary dance can understand the feelings he's trying to convey, because his dancing is really raw and genuine!
everytime i watch this even alongside you reacting to it im still getting tears in my eyes. to know he works so hard to write the lyrics and doing contemporary dance when he doesnt train for it. aaaa you should really react to his duo with Jun called My I.
The8 is a wonderful artist and he just keeps on showing us more. He never disappoints. I'm overwhelmed by SVT's talent. I'm stanning talented people. I enjoyed this reaction btw. Thhhhxxx 😁😁😁
From B-boying to this,he’s come so far. I’m so proud of him
I couldn't help crying when I saw this, Minhao is art ❤
The 8!! He is really a brilliant guy,I love him sooo much🥹🥹
Thank you for reacting to this, even though you didn’t expect to! 😭 You are feeding us Carats well! I was really interested in seeing your reaction to this with your previous dance training. Tbh, I feel like it’s easy as “fans” to think that everything our favs put out is amazing, but I was curious to know if this was actually good contemporary by a performer’s standards. I’m glad that it went above and beyond your expectations!
As someone with no formal dance background, I like how you described contemporary as beautifully awkward. It’s not too structured like ballet but has its own feeling and emotion in it- everything is intentional in this video and every time I watch it I discover something new.
I wonder if Minghao is slowly becoming your SVT bias? (; Keep us updated!
flomaxify when I can’t decide on a bias I usually look up their personalities. It’s like who would I be friends with aha. We’ll keep you posted
from dance to execution to story to his vocals ..everything is surreal😢❤
I much prefer this way your reacting 😊 I love you watching the full piece and then listening to your thoughts on the piece as you watch a second time. It is so refreshing
Cami Forrester haha you suggested it if I can remember correctly! I wish I could do it like this for all of them but just as I mentioned before, my videos would be way too long HAHA. But I think for technical choreographies I will 😁
Jeff Avenue I did 😊 occasionally maybe every once and a while doing it like this would be awesome 👍
I loved the fact that he used a male back up dancer. Because the back up dance serves 2 purposes: his shadow and a "dark & looming" figure that seems to always drag him away. because the way the back up dancer is positioned behind him, but away enough for us to see him, just like a shadow. But also the man is seen dragging him, pulling over his shoulder, and stepping on him. As if he's the one causing Minghao the pain but yet pushing back for us to see him as a shadow.
It was brilliant for Minghao to use a male dancer because it makes the choreography look for sharp and like he's actively fighting away from the dancer who keeps trying to contain him. It really sells the idea that Minghao is fighting for something, or rather trying his best to run away from something that seems to linger.
I been wait for this from morning until now.
I think you are one true Carat already. I hit the like button even before watching it because I know it will blow u away
I literally watched this in a work break and thought to myself, OMG, Jeff SO has to react to this! I finish work and, voila, guess what? Jeff has a reaction! Giant YASSS!
As expected Jeff, thank you for sharing your analysis. I have a lot of thought as well to this whole performance but I can't tell because I'm not a dancer hehe but what have you said voiced out what I am thinking. I am really waiting for your analysis/reaction because you're one of the reactor whom I trusted the most...
And thanks because I've learned new things about contemporary
Jeff, thank you so much for your videos! They really help me understand and appreciate better their hard work, especially in these dance that are difficult for me to comprehend. Thank youuuuu!
It's mostly refer to that he is trap inside.......he can't push his thoughts that are stopping him to leave.... and he can't find his way home or outside...... but I think so the last scene refers to that he finds hope or a path that leads him to a place where he wants to be ✌️✨......
This is what I got after watching this music video like more than 10 times 👀👍
This is probably one of my favourite analyses on your channel, probably because of my interest in contemporary dance, and also because this dance is so worthy of analysis in the first place (if that makes any sense)
This is truly a masterpiece, the lyrics are so meaningful tho..
Thank you for your reaction to SEVENTEEN😆
He is really artistic by nature, i mean he composed this choreography and song. He also paints, like really, and even put up an exhibit with Mingyu. Everything about him is art--his hair, his clothes--and he also reads books. He is really an intellectual.
I just really love how you verbalize these thoughts in my head in such a well-versed and succinct manner. You’re really one of my favorite KPOP reactors because you speak with so much agency and (given with your years of experience) so much knowledge and passion. I learnt a lot from your channel and as a fan, sometimes you just get drowned with the visuals and the idols itself, but ever since I watched your channel I became more keen-eyed on the techniques executed to make the choreography as beautiful or as complex as it is. Thanks so much Jeff and I hope you complete your 2021 bucket list soon!
thank you so much for the (spontaneous) reaction + analysis video on the8's falling down
Your analyst so genuine thankssss for noticing & support SEVENTEEN
YES OMG THIS IS INSANELY EARLY! THANK YOU JEFF!!
bonnie haha I was too curious!
omg wait i was JUST looking up reactions to this and specifically yours 😭 what a coincidence!
That day when this Svt's The8 contempo. art was released, i thought to myself that "you jeff has to see this coz you like how graceful the8 is. And you did. Thank you! 💎
This is why The8 is my bias in SEVENTEEN. I love the way he express himself and just everything about him❤️
I really appreciate your reaction to falling down cuz your analysis is so detailed!
I was already sobbing but this analysis made me cry. I love how you can explain things that me, a person without any dance training, can understand perfectly ♡
it makes me really happy that you find interest in him and his dancing because (as you already know by now haha) he really puts a lot of time and effort into his works❤️ thanks for your reaction and analysis!
My first impression of this dance are Minghao trying to free himself from himself... Is that make a sense to you?
I feel like he's fighting his other self and wanna be free of him but then he realize that he need to accept him to be himself...
Idk what am I saying but those are what I thought after watching it for the first time...
Ps: I don't know how to dance nor I have the knowledge of that.. so.. yeah...
Love this dance so much! I've always appreciated contemporary, and I feel like he knocked it out of the park. The symbolism and the rawness of this dance is something a lot of people can relate to. Especially lately, as you pointed out. I love your input! I was looking forward to you reacting to this one and you didn't disappoint, thank you for putting the time in to do this!
He is so graceful, proud of him.You need to check out d performance of all 4 members of d performance unit together, love seventeen.
To be honest, I don't understand a single thing in the mv the first time I see Falling Down. But after I watch your reaction I feel like I totally understand it!! The way you make situations to describe a move or a scene makes it more easier to understand!! Thank you so much for this cause it makes me appreciate the mv more than before.
i have a lot of respect for the8
This is what I've been waiting for, ever since his video came out
Thank you for being quick and properly giving an analysis
I really really really really like your reaction, thank you so much for take your time to watch the8's video♥
He is a living art work
I think this song and the meaning behind it is about his life, particularly the hardships that shape who he is now. He created this song with his darkest times in mind. Almost every member of seventeen if not all of them, has said that predebut was the hardest time in their lives. The uncertainty, doubt, and hardship. There was a point where Minghao almost quit if not for Jun. I feel that another big moment in his life, was when he had his back injury in 2017. He’s said before that it was one of the darkest times in his life. He changed a lot afterwards, being much more health orientated and started dedicating so much more into his art. During the compass part, I really feel like not only does it symbolize a sense of being lost, but also the feeling of losing yourself. I don’t want to assume, but I can only imagine the thoughts that went through his mind when he had his back injury. He’s a dancer. It makes sense that it was a pivotal moment in his life, especially since seventeen is a performance heavy group. If he didn’t have dance anymore, what did he have? He has always been a dancer. Of course, these are not the only symbolisms in here, but only my thoughts particularly on these two things. This song, this piece of art, is the embodiment of his struggles, and in so proud of him to be able to express it the way he wanted to.
"Beautifully awkward" stuck with me. Love that way of describing contemporary.
Finally! I watched the MV last midnight(because it was midnight here in our country when it released) and I'm so excited for your review. And now it's here!
Hi!!! Thank you for your reaction and analysis!!! I really appreciate that with all my heart, as i am bad at understanding the meaning from dance moves, so it became more clearer to me. Your analysis really helped me!!!
Thank you for analyst this, Minghao is my bias. I'm so happy with your explanation, thank you so much!!
I'm so grateful for your analysis! Your explanation regarding the moves was so interesting and I loved watching your reaction!
He is so talented ❤
Since I watched Falling Down the first time, I needed a performer/dancer analysing it. Thanks YT for recommending me this, and thank you for analysing it so beautifully. Now I'm gonna watch your other analysis (or reactions) because it's always a pleasure to watch people who understand dance taking some time to watch and valorize (valorize?) Seventeen work ^^
First of all, this performance is amazing. I am really starting to like what The8 does when he's dancing. And I read in the comments here that he used to do b-boying??? Well wow, I guess he really can pull off different styles! With this versatility and grace in his movements he really gives off similar vibes to Ten, who is one of my biases and one of my favorite, if not THE favorite, dancers in kpop. He won't be a bias breaker, but The8 sure can dance beautifully. A round of applause to that 👏👏👏
So much content and I’m living for it! Thank you Jeff! ❤️
I've been binge-watching your svt videos and I was so excited when I saw you did Falling Down, because I really enjoy how you do your reactions with comments from a technical pov, and I can't just shut up about this song! Before quarantine, I did contemporary dancing and I was so excited to see Minghao's growth here, and how he converted that dark time he was going through into something beautifully moving. And I love this explanation 9:54 because it's something I'm always rambling about, I prefer contemporary because it's rawer than ballet, you kinda wear your emotions out for all the people to see even when some find it "weird", and because of that, it's "beautifully awkward" as you put it (I'll probably have to switch to ballet when I go to college next year tho 😶). But getting back on track, I loved your analysis, it explains very well what I feel every time I look at this wonderful piece, and how you threaded the story and technical aspects of this, amazing! Thank you for reacting to this!
I like your analysis, because I can see things from a different perspective. That was quite insightful, thank you ^^
I cried when I first saw his video. It's so new to me, for years of being a carat, The8/everyone in Seventeen keeps on making me fall in love with them more.
I once tried Contemporary cause I usually dance Hiphop--Contemporary dance isn't easy.
Ps. Been waiting for your reaction to this. Thankyouuuu I'm really happy, I'm getting emotional.
Pps. Love your reactions. - sending love from Ph. God bless you 💕💕
i'm really proud of him. raw was one of the words that came to mind for me, too. it's clear he doesn't have a lot of classical training, but it seems to me that modern dance is more about storytelling, expression, and emotion, and the authenticity of his performance was really beautiful to me.
Thank you for reacting to this masterpiece ❤❤❤
Fun Fact (not really): This song was sung beautifully in Mandarin which is Minghao’s home language!
THANK YOU FOR REACTING TO THIS!!! 💖 #8Music
Honestly I cried when I watched it for the first time and I still get emotional now. Contemporary is my kind of dance!!! 😍😍
Thank you for this reaction. I love your explanation about his dance movement ^^
i think the reason why his body can be so fluid and expressive even though bboying is a style that can be very sharp is because of his history of doing wushu. i haven't done super extensive research into the martial art, but i do know that there are acrobatics and inclusions of soft movements that i can see a lot of in minghao's form. wushu is very flexible in comparison to stiffer martial arts like karate. hope this aids in explaining some of his form/technique!
Ahh that would make sense!
WOW THIS IS SO FAST! THANK YOU FOR REACTING TO THE8 FIRST SOLO SONG ♥
I really want you to react to that video and you do it very quickly, thank you Jeff, I like your analysis because that's what I meant too😁
For me I kinda thought the storyline was that he is a bird who fell down from the sky where everything was free and beautiful and peaceful and got caught by someone who took that freedom away from him. Hence the beginning where he falls. I think that what he said was a compass is actually supposed to be an airplane propeller/engine that failed and so it fell (which is what he does at that part). And in the choreo he’s constantly trying to get away from his dance partner and that part where he’s in the spotlight (a cage) he’s trying to climb up and finds that either his wings have been cut off, or he doesn’t have enough room to stretch them out and fly. But towards the end he gives up and starts being who his dancer wants him to be and they start moving in sync and he gets dragged away at the end.
XU MINGHAO is art. Thank you for your reaction.
I KNEW you would react to this (you had no choice haha)!!!
The8 has grown soo much
you should really react to my i by jun and minghao. it's one of my all time favorite seventeen songs and choreos. i think you would like it a lot :)
