cat Chaser You obviously have wonderful taste in film. I too adore Lady Sophia and her sophisticated way of bringing class to the screen. I love the way the perfect film can give you an escape... 📺
Reminds me of the poem by Carl Sandburg called, "Explanations of Love": There is a place where love begins and a place where love ends. There is a touch of two hands that foils all dictionaries. There is a look of eyes fierce as a big Bethlehem open hearth furnace or a little green-fire acetylene torch. There are single careless bywords portentous as a big bend in the Mississippi River. Hands, eyes, bywords-out of these love makes battlegrounds and workshops. There is a pair of shoes love wears and the coming is a mystery. There is a warning love sends and the cost of it is never written till long afterward. There are explanations of love in all languages and not one found wiser than this: There is a place where love begins and a place where love ends-and love asks nothing.
The little expression Sophia gives at the 17:29 mark, just after Richard says; “What an exciting life you do lead”, was amazing. That one little nuance spoke volumes about the character’s character and whimsical nature, as well as Sophia’s acting ability.
I know exactly how she must have felt when she was on that last train home. I have also experienced a situation like this once. So much in love (with each other) and it couldn't be and ended abruptly, so that there wasn't even time to say goodbye. Suddenly someone turned up in front of whom we could no longer talk to each other. I went to the bus, feeling numb. My whole body ached, I was downright physically nauseous from this farewell forced to be without saying goodbye. I felt bruised and physically wounded. Then leaden tiredness began to settle over me, I couldn't say anything anymore, I thought I couldn't even make the few steps home from the bus. But of course you can. Your legs know how to walk, even if your soul feels bruised. I felt sick and so helpless for the remaining night. Also the days after were very hard. Love is a mighty thing. And it's a brutal thing, if circumstances do not allow to live it.
Have you got over the experience you described or perhaps just learnt to live with it? Perhaps the love never goes away...? Being human can be so very hard. My mum - who is 91 - says of the 1945 film, times may have changed enormously but our emotions do't change. Bon Chance.
@@barkchip1872 Yes, I got over it. It was so bad then, because we were torn apart at the height of my infatuation. my body burned with passion and was completely crazy about him. I remember how numb I felt when we were torn apart. But, he wasn't the love of my life, it was just pure passion, from which i thought, it was real love. I met the real love of my life much later. 😊 But I will never forget, how I felt that day, and the impact, it had on me then, because it was a real physical experience, to be separated that way. It was real pain.
“Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quick you hardly catch it going?”― Tennessee Williams.....................
Nice "cultural crossover piece". I didn't care for the original so I enjoyed this version. Sophia Loren is amazing - as always - and Burton is beyond reproach. Moral of this story: If you have a wife as beautiful and as sensual as Loren, make sure she works from home.
It is a strong and unforgiving picture of forbidden possibilities. Cruel, sad, and very realistic. Perfect actors in a play on an intimate moment of human imperfection. In it's density, almost unbearable. Great cinema.
@@margaretlavender9647Why so? The original as marvellous but of its time, this was a more modern version of life, at that time. In fact, of any time, regarding people who have a conscious, and of not hurting those they love. Sometimes, things don’t turn out the way we want, and sacrifices have to be made, and sometimes we have to go for true love, and life hurts and can destroy but this is a very interesting example of that difference
As a huge fan of the original film, I approached this with trepidation, but I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed it. I thought it added some interesting and provocative touches to the original story: the guilt Mrs. Jesson felt over the suicide attempt of her client, Alec's asking her to marry him, meeting Alec's wife and experiencing first-hand his loveless marriage, and spending some more time with Mr. Jesson and their children. Thanks for posting!
Richard is a top draw actor!!! Best of all time for me, he obviously excelled in his successful films, but even in the bad ones he still put in class performances that would make plenty of people still want to watch a "boring" movie again and again. He and Sophia were a great partnership in this film.
So, so s l o w . . . . I'm only watching for Burton's magnetic presence. Sophia Loren gives a subtle, multifaceted performance. I had forgotten how ironic yet tender the ending is.
Never knew this version existed. Really liked it, Burton's performance was so measured and understated. It would have been ironic if Alec's wife was reviewing a book by...John Morlar....it came across as something he'd probably have wrote.
hollywood greats loren and burton are incomparable. wala ng katulad nila ngayon. a good movie to remember good times in the early 70's. those were the days when stars are really stars. salamat sa movie na ito.
The express train in the beginning is symbolic: it doesn't stop. Better not too close. Brief encounters with strangers and falling in love with the one we hardly know happen in our life and make us wonder especially when our marriage is getting bored and sour. Normal things and people begin to bother and become pointless but falling in love with somebody we hardly know can be like walking toward an express train that's so fast and powerful and above all fatal. I believe many married people may feel like a boy crying out in the wilderness. Anyway, this movie tells us we should value our daily peace and comfort of doing nothing wrong, yet it's true I feel so bored at times.
+Jane Lee Except that it was a through train, not an express. It was a freight train pulled by a diesel locomotive (class 33) with some open box wagons, box vans and a brake van. There's a Morris Minor estate on the train as well. It all made me feel rather nostalgic. Doesn't affect your point though.
Patrick Prosper whore is such a heavy word. Agree with your sentiment, yes finalise one relationship before commencing another, but I would caution calling someone a whore.
Celia Johnson - in the original movie - was probably a better choice for the bored, lonely housewife. Loren is somewhat too sassy and attractive, it's hard to believe she would settle for a mediocre marriage, etc etc... oh well... I do love her though.
but she explains explicitly why - family obliterated by the war, no options, the Brit a safety net, an exciting and debonnaire life raft; and it wasn't mediocre at all, still isn't. No pizzazz anymore, but that is quite different. You haven't been paying attention.
Sofia has a smart mather - she send her to beauti contest and Im sure she "Advice" her merry Ponti - her carrier will Never look like it did if not for him. It was a lot very beautiful actresses back then in Italy - their women are know for their beauty and Many MORE beautiful then Sofia ,,,, like Gina Lollobrigida Claudia Cardinale and more -AS they say - not that important what you do but with WHOM lol
Sophia played the role of the notes dull housewife in 'a special day", with an enourmous success. In this one maybe she looked too glamorous and like a star.
Wow Jane Lee there's a HEALTHY DOSE of poetry in your very SOUL I can certainly discern about you in your critical analysis of this remake of the "Brief Encounter" movie.
There comes a point where, no matter how innocently something like this begins, their eyes meet and there is an unspoken understanding; that is when the hard choices have to be made.
I love this movie, but the chemistry that you feel in the older movie, it is not here. Burton is better than Loren, but neither delivers the passion that should be palpable, which is odd, in particular for Burton. Jack Hedley is just plain perfect, as most stage actors are, above all the Brits. I still enjoyed it very much, because it captures that transition era that was the 70s, but most importantly is that love, true love, is a very strong bond and feeling that has nothing to do with social traditions. I often wonder if most people have ever truly loved their partner.
It's not supposed to "compare" to it. Also, I own David Lean's version. I like it, but the version is a bit heavy on cliche. Just my opinion. Also, not crazy about Celia Johnson's acting style.
I don’t know why movie directors and script writers, did not think of Richard Burton later in his career. But his specific voice would not fit playing a Sheriff. I remember this movie And enjoy trips down memory lane
As a fan of the David Lean classic, I thought this remake was truly BAD. Sophia was just miscast as a regular housewife. She is such an exotic sexy Italian beauty that this just did not work. She always looked like someone “acting” and never embodied the character. Burton ugh too brooding and they didn’t even seem to have chemistry. What a mess.

Classic movie with great actors..really enjoyed watching..directed well..a very interesting story line..the intensity of love between two strangers who meet up at a railway station is very well characterized..such a.dramatic movie.
.
Some films should never be remade, this is one of them!
+fannycraddock99 and Gilda Marlowe + I also like better the version with Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson, I think It got deeper into the soul, but you cannot deny that Burton and Loren give great performances.
+fannycraddock99 I am surprised that anyone would even have the nerve to try.
True
I have watched a few remakes of films, some of which should have been left alone and this one is one of them, Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard's version really got inside me, this doesn't
The Heartbreak Kid is another.
Excellent performances by Loren and, Burton ❤❤❤❤❤
I viewed the comments and looked up the original. No insult to this work but the original was by far more passionate and heartfelt ❣️
Mary Williams
cat Chaser Hi look up Brief Encounter 1945 it's the original. It's black and white and far more entertaining. You're really in for a treat.
cat Chaser You obviously have wonderful taste in film. I too adore Lady Sophia and her sophisticated way of bringing class to the screen. I love the way the perfect film can give you an escape... 📺
cat Chaser You're welcomed Cat 😇
Mary Nelson I dont know anyone who likes this at all EVEN if they never saw David Lean’s gorgeous original !
What a gem.
Thank you
Reminds me of the poem by Carl Sandburg called, "Explanations of Love":
There is a place where love begins and a place
where love ends.
There is a touch of two hands that foils all dictionaries.
There is a look of eyes fierce as a big Bethlehem open hearth
furnace or a little green-fire acetylene torch.
There are single careless bywords portentous as a
big bend in the Mississippi River.
Hands, eyes, bywords-out of these love makes
battlegrounds and workshops.
There is a pair of shoes love wears and the coming
is a mystery.
There is a warning love sends and the cost of it
is never written till long afterward.
There are explanations of love in all languages
and not one found wiser than this:
There is a place where love begins and a place
where love ends-and love asks nothing.
This show is reality of love. You can never get enough of love that is real.
I really loved this version of the classic movie!
I think it is hard to think of any husband ignoring a Wife as beautiful as well as intelligent as Sophia Loren in this movie.
I just saw the 1945 original. Now I’m gonna watch this. Thank you so much for posting!!!

But I will never forget, how I felt that day, and the impact, it had on me then, because it was a real physical experience, to be separated that way. It was real pain.
@@Schelby.Lo1 You describe it very well.
I'm so sorry 😢
Thanks for the upload. Been looking for this movie
Amazing sensitive story told by 2 wonderful sensitive actors. The most authentic film I have ever watched.
To be exact, one actor and one actress.
@@guymorris6596 , you are obviously not one.
Good film, and good to see the old British Rail.Memories!Sophia Loren a stunner, and still is!
Yep,enjoyed it😎👍
“Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quick you hardly catch it going?”― Tennessee Williams.....................
This film captures the tedium of 1970's Britain beautifully; Richard Burton and Sophia Loren were like fish out of water.
Love these kind of movies,,Thank you for posting!
It really makes me sad to see how this movie ends, because it's almost like my depressing situation which cannot be made happy in any outcome.
Didn't think I would like this version, but really enjoyed it - the Burton magic.
Understated acting and very effective. Sofia and Richard looks like they were really involved, the body language

It was dreadful.
Nothing like this ever happened to me (!)
It could be made again. I can see Angie Jolie and George Clooney doing it.
@@anairenemartinez165 yeah, Amal will surely love to see her husband doing it with Angelina.:-)
@@anairenemartinez165 no, please not Jolie. She cannot measure up to Sophia Loren, try though she does.
I love movies from my childhood. Brings back memories. Much better than most of the junk produced today from “hellywood “
I’ve always been able to appreciate Ms. Loren’s immense talent as an actress. Possibly because I’ve never really consider her all that beautiful
I am sorry sammy you would not know beauty if it hit you intheface
She's absolutely beautiful 😍.
This is such a sad attempt at a remake of a masterpiece.
Richard is a top draw actor!!! Best of all time for me, he obviously excelled in his successful films, but even in the bad ones he still put in class performances that would make plenty of people still want to watch a "boring" movie again and again. He and Sophia were a great partnership in this film.
John Batziolas,
Watch Burton and E.Taylor in Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. Very enjoyable. He was really good there.
1974 is my birth year, so felt strange to watch a movie of my own age. Sophia Loren was a sign of beauty so her acting
Not as good as the original but I still enjoyed watching it. Really liked seeing those 2 "greats of their time", Loren and Burton, together.
There only one Brief Encounter...but thanks for upload....
Skip this version and rather watch the 1945 B&W version directed by David Lean featuring Trevor Howard and Celia Johnson
hollywood greats loren and burton are incomparable. wala ng katulad nila ngayon. a good movie to remember good times in the early 70's. those were the days when stars are really stars. salamat sa movie na ito.
I did not want the movie to end....
Thanks for this amazing Movie 🙏🙏🙏.
A wonderful classic movie. Thanks "The World of Burton"
Holy crap - imagine rocking up the local CAB and finding Sophia Loren working there!
Didn't even know that this existed. Thanks for posting.
Holly wood and all the actors of today take notice of the twogreat actors
What a pleasure to watch them
I love both of them
The express train in the beginning is symbolic: it doesn't stop.
+Jane Lee
Except that it was a through train, not an express. It was a freight train pulled by a diesel locomotive (class 33) with some open box wagons, box vans and a brake van. There's a Morris Minor estate on the train as well. It all made me feel rather nostalgic.
Doesn't affect your point though.
+Ninoinoz Oh
+Cyrus Bahmaie I thought it was a 47 : P
Patrick Prosper whore is such a heavy word. Agree with your sentiment, yes finalise one relationship before commencing another, but I would caution calling someone a whore.
who is?
Richard and Sophia … we’re beautiful together!
This version is an insult to the original, despite the great actors.
Not at all. A tribute with different approach perhaps.
Excellent! Thank you
Celia Johnson - in the original movie - was probably a better choice for the bored, lonely housewife. Loren is somewhat too sassy and attractive, it's hard to believe she would settle for a mediocre marriage, etc etc... oh well... I do love her though.
Funny her real marriage to Ponti was boring why she fell for Cary Grant. who wouldn't.
Funny her real marriage to Ponti was boring why she fell for Cary Grant. who wouldn't.
but she explains explicitly why - family obliterated by the war, no options, the Brit a safety net, an exciting and debonnaire life raft; and it wasn't mediocre at all, still isn't.
Good movie, enjoyed this version also..
When superstars try to play the life of ordinary people in England, it just doesn't work.
yes,this is only celebrity
Wow Jane Lee there's a HEALTHY DOSE of poetry in your very SOUL I can certainly discern about you in your critical analysis of this remake of the "Brief Encounter" movie.
I miss going on trains especially with my mum going to Leeds shopping on Saturday afternoons😢😭
This movie is timeless. 👏👏👏👏👏👏
There comes a point where, no matter how innocently something like this begins, their eyes meet and there is an unspoken understanding; that is when the hard choices have to be made.
Rubbish compared to the original version waste of time watching this film
I love this movie, but the chemistry that you feel in the older movie, it is not here. Burton is better than Loren, but neither delivers the passion that should be palpable, which is odd, in particular for Burton. Jack Hedley is just plain perfect, as most stage actors are, above all the Brits. I still enjoyed it very much, because it captures that transition era that was the 70s, but most importantly is that love, true love, is a very strong bond and feeling that has nothing to do with social traditions. I often wonder if most people have ever truly loved their partner.
Nothing compared to David Leans Original starring Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard

It's not supposed to "compare" to it. Also, I own David Lean's version. I like it, but the version is a bit heavy on cliche. Just my opinion. Also, not crazy about Celia Johnson's acting style.
HAPPYT
HAPPYTHELEAF absolutely true
File under Top Ten Unnecessary Remakes.
I don’t know why movie directors and script writers, did not think of Richard Burton later in his career.
But his specific voice would not fit playing a Sheriff.
I remember this movie
And enjoy trips down memory lane
been looking for this for years! Thank you!
Thank You !
Loved it. Thank you
Very natural realistic acting. ❤❤❤❤
Beautiful Sophia and wonderful Richard.
When I was a boy, my big regret was that I was not old enough to ask Sophia Loren for a date. Sigh. Now, it is too late. Sigh.
Warm, kind, brown Italian eyes
She is still alive, what's stopping you??
@@schmittyhanrahan5512 Nananana!! Her eyes are green. I'm wondering how you could make such a glaring OOPS. Maybe it was in presupposing that Italians all have the same specific sort of eyes.
I am the same about Gregory Peck. First too young, and now it's too late. If I could have hit it just right, I'd have had heaven knows how many dates with him. ;o)
Interesting fact - what an amazing genetic ancient polyglot Central/Southern Italy ...So okay: open big warm green Italian eyes! Thanks for commenting on this.
My parents knew a couple that ran a small town newspaper from Abingdon, Va (town of Barter Theater) where Gregory Peck started his professional acting...they were longtime acquaintances of his and were impressed with him as a person, gentleman etc....no surprise there just thought I would mention
Not a bad film. Thank you for sharing.
