It's easy to label someone like Darian/Adrian as crazy without going into the reasons why she's like that.
She's a very brilliant girl. Kind of like a child prodigy. She's skipped two grades, plays amazing piano for her age, and her emotional maturity is far beyond her years. A person like this can never get along with her peers since she feels out of place. Even her peers feel the same way about her since she behaves like a 19-20yr old. The people who she could actually connect to are older than her. But they would never treat her as one of their own since she's only 14. ( Imagine thinking a 14yr old being as smart and mature as you at 21. You wouldn't want to hang out with her). That's why she says in a scene people think she's a freak and how it's hard for her to make friends. She gets isolated from both groups of people: Her own age and her own emotional age. Naturally a person like this feels left out and a loner. Now emotional compatibility is much more important when it comes to relationships. She hasn't had any boys in her life for that same reason. She could never be with a guy her age since she'll feel like dating a child. And no man older than her would touch her since she's only 14. This is naturally a source of trauma for her. She tells Nick not "to be scared of her". But that's what happens of course. When Nick calls her "insane" she starts screaming because it hurts her. She isn't insane. Just turned that way since she has been horribly misunderstood.

I really enjoyed this movie. I thought I would not like it but it was very good. I never saw this back then. Alicia silverstone played a hell of a character! She was really cute back then and still really good looking now.
Her name was originally "Darrien Forrester", but they got sued by a person who was really named Darrien Forrester, so they had to change it in the movie to "Adrian".
