Geez! 180 mph. In 1985 I bought the top Camaro money could buy at the time. An IROC-Z It had a crazy 215 hp. I traded an '83 Z-28 with the H.O. 5.0 with 5 speed at 190 hp. My, how things have changed. Nice video. Thanks for posting.
That was a great up tempo run up! A pleasure to see a good driver shifting along in their car with knowledge and care. Years ago, I had a '79 280 ZX with a 5 speed. I traveled a lot for work on various more rural Interstates; I could have used a 6th gear when doing my late night speedy travel; 5th gear had very little drop off at shifting , plus DID have more GO to pick up speed, quite a bit more. I raced various Z-28's and Trans AM's, for distance stretches (2-5 miles), I outran all of them through 1985. I really loved those Camaro's and was going to buy one, but I got a crazy good deal to get that ZX, which by chance had a Paul Newman racing tune on it, and everything that spun on it, was centered and balanced perfectly. I also followed the Official break in guidelines for the engine, which was an insanely hard to do: two minutes at idle at Start, no revs over 4000, and no speed over 55; I did that for 2000 miles! I remember hearing all 6 piston ring setting on the way to work as I slowly drove through a quiet neighborhood. Thanks for your ear; your video just took me back in time.
6th gear was not intended for performance. It was intended for fuel economy. They been doing this forever. My old 94 z28 was the same way, along with the trans am, corvette and viper. It was a way to try to avoid the gas guzler tax. None of these cars could achieve top speed in 6th, because it just drops the engine rpm's so much, it's not making anywhere near it's max power. My 94 z28 would do 100 mph in 6th gear, at only 2500 rpm's. At 55, it was only like 1300 rpm's. I could average 28mpg with it on the highway. I'd like to see a redline at least 1k rpm's higher on these engines though.
The automatic models might be about to crack 190 MPH simply by virtue of its shorter gearing. At 180, a 6MT Camaro turns about 4500 RPM, which means it’s only producing about 370-380 HP at the crank. An automatic would turn closer to 5500 RPM, allowing the engine to produce around 430 HP, nearly its peak output of 460.
It really was. I put the cruise on once at 155mph and drove it for 50 miles for about 20 minutes. It wasn't struggling... It was showing like 10mpg if I remember correctly. With an open road and an aux fuel tank, it would've put a whoop on a helicopter or Cessna for regional travel.
To the questions about gear 5 or 6. I got to 155 in a 01 camaro ss in 5. Nothing more in 6. Someone below said aerodynamics. He's right. And tyranny gearing and torque and a bunch of other little things that add up. To 100 is easy. The higher you go, the more power you need in an exponential manner. Check me. Did I get it correct? 🤔
A car that can do 200+ but tops out at 180 stays together a lot longer. in theory most cars can go much faster than their top speed but a tall final gear helps with gas and not stressing the car too much
most American 6 speed cars are intended for 6th gear to be an overdrive for highway driving, they are realistically 5 speeds. mustangs are the same, i believe even vipers are the same way. European cars don't follow the same philosophy. they pay for the whole cluster they're going to use the whole cluster.
That C6 also weighs about 700lbs less and has a better front end to cut through the air. ZL1 wasn't meant to go fast in a straight line, it was meant to handle a road course and handling a road course it does well. With or without the 1LE option.
172 was as high as it'd go in 5th. 170 is where most people would shift. My guess is the tranmission is different, or at last the gearing in the transmission. I did 173 in a stock 2020 SS automatic. The difference is felt in torque and how quickly it gets to 170 from 150ish mostly. Most manual trans ZL1 videos I've seen, tap out at 172. I posted the air temp and elevation in the description. A little cooler would've pushed the hp up just a bit. This was 80 degrees fahrenheit. I did manage to get it to 186mph in 80 degree temperature. It just takes miles, with an "s".
could be different tires, slightly different redline, different gear ratios my guess is yours has the bigger wheels and his has smaller resulting in different gear ratios
100%. That's 88 yards a second. Most of the people that says it's slow have probably been 150-160 for a few seconds then slowed back down. 160 vs 180 is a different animal when holding the speed
That's weird , got the 10 speed auto and I reached 183 mph, that's really the top it just can't go any further! There is a good 10 miles after Grants new Mexico that you can give it all you have !
There is no holding 5th longer. The rev limiter begins at 172. No Lift shift would have put me in the rev limiter. There's full boost at 175 and 180. Makes no difference. I can assure you if that's all I had to do to go faster, I would do it. I've been hauling ass (just like this video) for 25 years. I can squeeze every last Mph out of a top end run. Is yours an auto or a stick?
