  • At the Aircraft Electronics Association convention in Palm Spring, California in March 2019, Garmin introduced two new standalone panel mount GPS navigators, the GPS 175 and the GNX 375. The latter includes both navigation and onboard ADS-B In/Out. In this video shot at the show, Garmin's Jessica Koss give AVweb viewers a tour of the new product.

    I have an Garmin Aera 660 that has all or close to what I need for navigation and traffic but I NEED an autopilot that can couple to the navigator to accomplish RNAV / GPS approaches. With the G5 / GFC500 / GPS 175 combination it appears that this an affordable path for my 1976 Mooney! I think GARMIN has finally got it right for the "not so rich" GA guys and gals!

    I do like the touch interfaces, but I should say that (with the G500 txi) I have already encountered problems using the mode in the air. Trying to touch an object like a destination airport on the map while bouncing around in turbulence is difficult.

    Using the GNX375 that has ADS-B in/out Am I be able to have ADS-B capabilities on the Garmin Pilot at the same time?. It would be nice if so since the I pad has a larger screen. Can it be used on a certified aircraft? if not what model is comparable to to it?

    Went looking to see the STC's for Cessna Aircraft. Seen to have 172's, 337's and a few others. No 182's, 206 or 210 series. No value here for the people who have the aircraft with no STC Docs. The actual display could be a lot better when viewing it in person. A very hefty price tag for what you are getting.

    In doing consumer reporting please don’t repeat the marketing practice deception of "99", "95", etc. Round up to the even amount. The units introduced in the report cost five thousand dollars ($5,000) and eight thousand dollars ($8,000) and in reality the cost is even more when any shipping and taxes are added. Consumer Reports and the New York Times adhere to this practice.

      I think a big benefit of the model that is a GPS and transponder is that you frequently have to buy those two items together for your ADS-B out upgrade anyway. To me it feels like such a natural combination I'm a little surprised that it took them this long to come out with it. If I hadn't just got my airplane out of the shop last month with a new transponder I'd probably be talking to my avionics guy about one of these. A $10k GPS was a little out of my range.

      It fits into the space left from removing your old transponder or GPS with minimal panel modification needed. Installing a big-screen 650 or 750 takes a lot more changes to make room, and that all adds up to more installation cost very quickly.

    What makes this calculator with a screen and a GPS receiver cost $5,000? FAA Certification? The only benefit I can see with these boxes over an iPad with ADS-B in/out is Autopilot integration. Even so, that’s a lot of cash for a tiny screen with a clunky interface.

    • @angelocosentino1942
      @angelocosentino1942 5 років тому +6

      If you have ADS-B in/out, then this product (specifically the GNX 375) isn't for you. Regarding the WAAS equipped GPS 175, you can't shoot an LPV approach on your iPad, so that's one benefit.

    • @NoNonsenseScalping

    • @maxon1672
      @maxon1672 5 років тому +1

      Angelo Cosentino absolutely. I was mainly commenting (dramatically) on the hardware and questioning what could make these boxes so expensive for GA pilots in certified aircraft - when compared to processing power and user interfaces in consumer electronics the cost of Garmin and some other avionics suites seem pretty high! Especially when you get into all-in-one Garmin panels in the 5-6 figure arena.
      I suppose development, certification cost, and relatively low production volume are the largest cost drivers. That, and they know we’ll pay for it!

    • @Alex-us2vw
      @Alex-us2vw 5 років тому +2

      Market size and demand. Developing a product that at best will sell a few thousand units a year is an expensive proposition.
      If the GA aircraft was even 1/4 the size of the automotive fleet we would have products like these for not much more then a cars GPS/Radio/multimedia stereo upgrade.

      That's the GPS with transponder. The basic GPS is $4995. Add in what is essentially a GTX 345 into the same box for 3k more and you'll be seeing a lot of these taking the place of old King GPS units. Overall, not a bad price for a basic IFR GPS/transponder combo.
