Great video, as usual, always appreciate how grounded and aware you are! All your advice is very sound, I would add follow up with a phone call if possible an employer can then hear if you are genuine and flexible, and lead with the main criteria and key points! I have no doubt you will succeed in Australia! 🙋
Big G! You absolutely did not fail those trial shifts, at all mate. You gave it a red hot go and it sounds like the employers let you down with not providing any direction during your shift or setting out a plan for your shift so you can to be productive. Hope things are going a lot better for you now and you’re making enough money to cover your cost of living and some extra, so you can travel the country ✈️
@@gregjameson327 Well good luck and hopefully something comes up. Far North Queensland probably gets busier in the dry season, when all of us southerners want to escape the cold. Maybe your hours will increase so you don't have to resort to OnlyFans :P
You’re spot on Greg! Sound advice, sometimes you just have to be persistent! Looking forward to your next instalment. Hope you have a great week. Hope this wet weather goes away before the holiday weekend. 👍
i feel you man. I'm a uni student from born in Australia with not many free days to work and im struggling because every job feels the need to ask for ridiculous availability and i still havent found a job. i Can imagine how much harder it is for a foreigner
Congrats on your job hun. You're 100% correct with regard to relevant experience, resume structure and local qualifications. I'm in HR Management in professional services (legal, accounting) and overseas qualifications are not recognised without Australian compliance, which can take years in some professions. Melbourne or Sydney would be your best bet when looking at transitioning to a professional position 😊
@gregjameson7338 both Brisbane and Melbourne are in construction booms. To get your foot in the door try an agency like JV Recruitment and register. Most head offices are in Melbourne or Sydney but if you want to stay in Queensland, Brisbane is the place. You may need to be flexible in locations initially as that will expand your opportunities and make you more attractive to employers. Also don't discount long term contracts, employers here look for local experience.
@@gregjameson327 with your engineering background look at trades assistant, many low technical roles like cleaning machines and basic service and you understand english very well thats already a big big plus
Hey Greg, my names Matthew, I met you at the start of a waterfall. Hartleys creek falls the other day. Great meeting you and if you are keen to catch up sometime let me know 👍
Thanks brotha, yea not too different. Only major difference from the states was putting the position you apply for but maybe I should have been doing that all along lmao
Mmm maybe they don't believe you work hard enough, personally I never failed a trial as a foreigner myself here. Also, you got to have that Aussie spirit and mentality. As much as you might get upset by this comment, integration in Australia is key.
30 years ago when I was backpacking met a UK guy traveling in Au was an aircraft maintenance engineer in the UK worked for the airlines he managed to get lots of engineering trades assistant jobs just cold called workshops and fabrication places, today it would be harder getting a technical or trades job and everyone is seeking entry service & retail jobs.
If you also get what's called an RSA - Responsible Service of Alcohol Course ( book and pay for one before you arrive in Australia as this will help you get a foot in the door). If you are going to come here to Australia for our Winter ❄️☃️ we do have ski 🎿🎿 fields in both Victoria and New South Wales that's a possibility
All good general advice for wherever you are applying. Do your research and homework well in advance. Tailor your applications to the position. Don't wtite a novel. eg noone cares if you were a PhD candidate in engineering if you are picking fruit or pouring a beer.
@@gregjameson327 Greg, I am a Cairns local. For most of last year, hospitality here was crying out for staff. However, this has now changed and we are flooded by backpackers now, so i feel sorry for you. Mind you, Cairns is a tourist city, so every man and his dog comes here and looking for work. Thee are still worker shortages in much smaller and remote places; but that might be too much of a culture shock for many foreigners. eg you will soon appreciate the distances here . I know Australians who freak out if they have to travel 100kms from a capital city.
You mentioned you had 4 trial shifts at a restaurant. This seems unlawful in regard to your working rights, keep in mind for future jobs here that all employers are bound by the Fair Work Commission regulations. It seems like that manager from the restaurant is quite dodgy. Trial shifts should only be one shift of 2-4 hours max.

Ayy thanks brotha! ATM i’m just about breaking even. I’ll probably need to get a second part time as I’m just not getting enough hours.

Ayyy thanks paddy! Is there another holiday coming up after Anzac Day ?
Yes Monday May 6 is Labour Day so a lot of places will be closed.

Haha I’ve been there as well grinding through uni while working can be brutal. I’m glad I had that experience now looking back on it tho

I’ve had my eye on Brisbane. Hoe the job market out there ??

Ya, send me a msg at my IG! I think me and my friend are planning a hike this weekend!
good advice dude. that resume format it pretty universal in western countries

Great video...plan to go there as a Tourist Visa...from Philippines
Happy for you. The job market is awful here at the moment, not that I need to tell you that...
Thanks! I still need to probably get another part time gig as well haha
@@gregjameson327 Well you're not alone. I work two jobs to make ends meet as well.
Sound advice Greg....also dot point to keep it a punchy read I note that you included!!!

Tbh I don’t think it was a work ethic thing. Where are you working out in Aus??

I think you can do some
Of the trades and still extend the visa I’m on as well

Yea one of my mates I work with is trying to work a ski season !
My cousin's son has headed back to the Perisher ski fields in NSW (he lives in WA).
Our employment industry is broken. It's run by an algorithm 😔
Haha at least online it is. I’ll have to do some research when I start applying online again
ATS forever lol
Speaking to the hirer face to face they see you as you are if they like you. you are halfway to getting a job with them or someone they know...
Especially in customer facing roles ^
Being on a "holiday visa" would mean employers would by-pass you a lot as they know you won't be around for long.
Yup, it makes sense why, still frustrating experience all the same
1 year shouldn't be that much of a problem for hospitality. It has a high turnover.
All good general advice for wherever you are applying. Do your research and homework well in advance. Tailor your applications to the position. Don't wtite a novel. eg noone cares if you were a PhD candidate in engineering if you are picking fruit or pouring a beer.

I'm at 330 atm and about 8 months into it. No luck in Australia. Might be packing up soon.
I feel ya brotha where have you been searching ?
@@gregjameson327trying Seek mostly, and all over Australia but mainly Perth where I am based. Almost at a point of giving up.
Hmmm I never got any success on seek tbh. Try making a list and just cold calling a bunch of different companies !
@@gregjameson327might try that. Cheers dude.
Its because you where in Cairns lol. Every single backpacker in Australia will go to there during the Australian Winter
Yup definitely being in cairns make things difficult. I heard that it’s actually easier to land something in the winter as they need more people ^
4 shifts as a trial?.. Where you paid?.. I'm Aussie, that manager was illegally exploiting you if you were not paid after the first shift..
Nahh I’ll have to watch that bit back, I must have misspoke. I did 4 trial shifts in total at different restaurants
