Could be worse. Hidden jobs. In Finland, many workplaces no longer advertise their vacancies and the unemployed jobseekers desperately try to find these hidden jobs by sending applications to all possible companies where they can get a job and therefore even the law requires that the unemployed must apply for a job at any job even if they do not have the qualifications for that job. It's not practical and consumes resources, but governments have no desire to change the system because it's "American" and it makes the unemployed apply for as many jobs as possible which seems more efficient. At one point, there was an attempt to force companies to announce their vacancies, but the companies refused because announcing vacancies takes time.

I wouldn't turn to the government for a solution to this. I'm tired of things being illegal. What good is the government?
What if there was a website that scored employers? I'm pretty sure there's enough data out there to figure out which employers are posting ghost jobs.
The job board itself has this information. They could prioritize the companies that are actually hiring in job searches. Then they could boast their application to higher ratio.

Tip for job seekers: beware of "recruiters" offering to find you a job. Their business model is to build up their repertoire of candidates using your resumes to make themselves attractive to companies who will hire them to do the work of filling job openings. But many of these recruiters are just incompetent hacks trying to build up their portfolio and really have no job lined up for you specifically. Even worse, they may try to stuff you in a role that is lucrative for them to fill but not great for you. You may want to work with one or two during your career, but just be aware they do NOT work for you and do not have your interests as their focus. As Vincent said, your best route is to find a contact inside the company you can use.

I've had several interviews that exceeded the one hour time slot by like thirty + minutes because the hiring manager thought we had such a great connection. I'm referring to hiring managers appearing so laid back that they began talking about their hobbies, passions, and things we have in common. Next steps were followed up the "you'll definitely be hearing from me next week for a face to face meeting, etc." Next week comes around and all I get is complete radio silence! Not even an email response from the hiring manager or the recruiter. Everything goes to voice mail right away. I feel sorry for people in between jobs who need to pay bills. It was extremely stressful because I thought that by month 3 or 4 that I'd find the perfect role... It's tough out there, but you 1000% need to network both in-person as well as online vs LinkedIn. A lot of small to medium firms (which is a huge bulk of employers) are basically the owner/a handful of senior management and a bunch of entry level people doing what used to be skilled, mid to senior level work. Also, living in the USA, globalization is against you. I used to do the digital nomad thing, so I could give competitive rates and get jobs from all over the world. 1. It's sad that applying for jobs today is more about placating an HR minion rather than conveying skills and experience. The reality is that no one is going to read your resume. It will be scanned and software will compare key words to determine your fit. HR people know zero about your skills and abilities.
    2. HR people are lazy. Many companies now require you go to their website and retype in your whole resume so that HR can skip the scanning step and get back to texting their friends.
    3. Recent articles show that companies are putting out fake job ads (in order to look like they are growing to attract investors).
    4. Most jobs today don't even cover the cost of rent and it's not getting better. I am seriously considering moving overseas and living off my investments. There are several countries where you can live like a king on $1200-1400 per month, taxes and crime are low, and people speak English. The Island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean is at the top of my list.

The college for all movement rushed everyone to college and have unfortunately made a lot of overqualified workers with not enough positions. For fields in need, do you research. Trade is ALWAYS in need of people right now. Personally, I know my field (Hydrogeology) has so many empty positions that there’s kind of a crisis. If you’re interested in groundwater modeling and testing groundwater quality you may love my field! Entry level positions are starting at 70K but they go up fast and the empty positions have made promotions fast as well.

I have never had a hard time finding a job. I applied at maybe 10 jobs in the past 2 weeks. I got called back alot but never went any further than that into the next step. I am a tradesmen, welder to be exact. I have had 4 different contractors call me and all of them I agreed that I would take the jobs they offer since they pay well. SO far its been a whole week. Usually by now I have a weld test already setup and already passed. But 2 weeks they barely called back saying the company they were contracting me for was putting welder positions on "hold" whatever that means. So they offered to send my info to another company for the same pay and area and same kind of work. And its been already 2 days plus the weekend. Hopefully I can hear back this week otherwise I am going to have to resort to working retail jobs again and apply at Target or something because I need to start working again and making money.

I have 17 years of experience in engineering and digital recruitment, this is the WORST white-collar job market I have ever seen including multiple recessions. It started with Tech but there's been increases in layoffs trickling across all industries, even healthcare in certain fields. Companies are trying to trim the fat and hold onto cash until things stabilize. If you don't have an internal referral in this market, it's almost pointless to apply without an "IN". I'm saying this a highly experienced recruiter, having worked at fortune 500's and most of all the Big Tech firms. It's a dumpster fire in corporate America. It took me 5 months to find a good job and I completely changed industries.

There is an additional possibility about posted jobs that aren't really available. I interviewed for a university job as the result of a suggestion of a friend/colleague who was familiar with the kind of work the hiring person needed, and I was an obvious fit. When I was interviewed, I was told they would have to post the job to fulfill a statutory requirement that it was sufficiently advertised, although I was told they doubted they would find anyone else with my particular qualifications. It turned out that no one applied, and so I had the job. My point is that it is possible a person may essentially have been already selected for the job, and the posting is mostly a required formality.

My current role was a few states away, I had no previous specific industry experience, and applied through Indeed. Somehow, I landed it and been working there for almost 2 years. The starting pay was like $42k/year (19.50/hr), and I've gotten raises and bonuses since. However, it is a taxing position. I like the pay and sometimes the hours, don't get me wrong. The mentality of this business is that we must always do better than the previous quarter and year. The problem lies with the infinite growth mindset.
