It’s not a common thing so it’s not a big deal you had to ask. Essentially I was on a hill and I determined it was just about a nearby rock’s height difference so I parked on the rocks to make sure the right side was as tall as the left side. Made the sleeping experience a lot better as it was way more level.
It’s called leveling. And it’s actually pretty important with a roof top tent so you’re not slowly sliding towards one side of the tent throughout the night. Some vehicles outfitted with bags can “auto level” which is really nice.
No way would I be able to sit with my back to that vast open land. I’d have the truck to my back-which is probbbbbablyyyy why I wouldn’t make a good camp buddy. Lol. Also, thank you for not being a video yapper. Gads, but some people love the sound of their own voice. Such a treat to be able to just take it all in as you do. Thank you.
Long time subscriber but I usually don't comment! I just got a diesel heater for my 4Runner RTT set up (sound familiar?), and have been trying to find information about how they handle the snow/rain. It looks like you haven't had any issues with it being exposed to the elements? I purchased the Vevor model with the button switch instead of the LCD screen that you recommended. My tire step is on the way as well! Thanks as always, and really appreciate all that you add to the community.
So they claim that it’s “water resistant” and so far I’ve been fine, but now my ikamper completely covers the heater in the snow because it goes off over the tire. I make sure to cover electronics with these little like bowl covers, they kinda look like little plastic hair nets. I can’t promise it’ll be fine but I’ve got 10-12 trips with it in snow.

I drive on rocks all the time offroading. These tires are made with strong sidewalls and thick tread. Not 100% full proof but I’m not usually worried. Wood would be a good option but I needed all of it for the fire. Ideally I would use tractionboards but the difference from one side to the other was too great, or stackable RV chocks but I didn’t have them with me at the time.
It’s Vevor but I customized it. I have a video about it. BEST Diesel Heater Set-Up for Winter Camping | Vevor Tools ua-cam.com/video/OTQ4e5gDkDo/v-deo.html
Nah it’s a good question tons of people asked the same thing so you aren’t alone. The camp site was on a slight hill so I drove on the rocks in order to get the right side level with the left side.

I don’t even have a sunroof on mine. But now it doesn’t. I bought the non sunroof 4Runner because I knew that none of them had that. At least at that time, I think red tail overland might have that in theirs now but that’s way outside my price range.
I haven’t had that issue, I think when I turned it on at home it did for a while but when I went camping I didn’t smell it. Do you keep a carbon monoxide detector in there? Maybe you can see if exhaust is actually getting in if it sets off the detector.
Hi just stumbled across your wonderful video, I really enjoyed it , I have a question for and please bear in mind I don’t have any camping or 4x4 experience, so why did you park your vehicle on the stones ? And more specifically why only one side ? Thanks
Thanks! And it’s because there was a decent hill that I parked on so I parked on the rocks on the low side of the hill to make it level with the other side. Makes sleeping in the tent a lot easier when you aren’t sliding to one side of the tent because you’re weight shifts with gravity.
Thanks for the video. I just came back from a snowy camping trip in the Sequoias. It would have been nice to have your heater. Am curious that you left it outside. Does that hard the unit? Also, how long did you run it on a tank of diesel? Thanks!
So I’ve taken some precautions to cover the LCD screen but yeah from what I hear I’ve gotten lucky that it doesn’t get soaked. So far I’ve used it in plenty of storms with no major issues. I might be changing my set up soon but like I said it’s worked for me so far. That being said I used a salad bowl cover that’s like kinda like cling wrap and put it over the screen. That and I’m going to test a mixture of diesel and kerosene to make it less likely to gel.
It wasn’t the best because I had a V1 which had rivets and let in a lot of air. V2 would be better. I now have an iKamper 2.0 and will likely be going to an X Cover as they have that inner lining to them.
@@OXFOOT Good to know. I have a V2 camper on a truck. I like the iKamper line. I saw XO in Alaska, and then changed out to Alu-cab for their Nordic expedition; and wondered if that was a factor with the V2.

That’s really strange driving on rocks like that. Why not use a chunk of wood etc. less damaging to the tires and safer? Cool vid . 🙏☘️
Why do you drive up on wood/rocks?
Do u like the ridge grapplers thinking of buying some?
I like them. I’ve only had about 9 months on the lm and maybe 2 months of snow but so far I like them better than my BFGs.
@@OXFOOT dang. Noted. My bfgs have lasted so long and done so well wheeling. I am gonna be upgrading to 35s so, something to look at.
Where did you get the rack your heater is mounted on?
It was something I made with stuff I bought on Amazon. All the products are mentioned in this video and the parts should all be in the description.
What is that tire mounted heater brand called?
It’s Vevor but I customized it. I have a video about it.

This might be a really dumb question, but why did you put your Toyota on top of the rocks? Lol I’m sorry
Nah it’s a good question tons of people asked the same thing so you aren’t alone. The camp site was on a slight hill so I drove on the rocks in order to get the right side level with the left side.

Is the heater water proof??
It’s water resistant, I’ve run it in heavy snow and had no issues but there’s no IP rating that I’ve found so it’s not technically waterproof.
How warm did the heater keep inside the tent? Never been camping before, but love these videos!! Thanks for what you do!
I didn’t record the temp but I got kinda hot and ended up in just some gym shorts and a long sleeve eventually. It was maybe 60+ in there.
And thanks! Maybe one day you’ll give it a shot. Winter camping isn’t the time to start though. Lmao.
@@OXFOOT But no bugs though 🙌🏼
@@Joanna-jt4le yeah. Where I live I don’t have major issues with bugs but I’ve run into campsites where that happens a few times. I grew up in North Carolina and the bugs, especially mosquitos were terrible. Growing up camping there got me used to it I guess.
@@OXFOOT I bet, I actually live in NC myself but have lived in a couple different states including Florida. Can’t say I’m used to mosquitoes, don’t think I’ll ever be, haha. Kuddos to you!

Great camping brother ,love from India ❤️, can u tell me your car name please?
It’s a Toyota 4Runner they are only made in the US and maybe Canada? Similar to the Toyota Prado but with a V6 engine. No diesel option sadly.
@@OXFOOT thanks for your reply brother 😊
Really enjoying your content brutha! Question for you? Where did you find the tire mount for your diesel heater?
I have a video on it and I should have all the links in the description to everything. I haven’t checked in a while so if any of the links are outdated I can find updated stuff.

is there a cutout in the tent to allow a passageway thru the sunroof
I don’t even have a sunroof on mine. But now it doesn’t. I bought the non sunroof 4Runner because I knew that none of them had that. At least at that time, I think red tail overland might have that in theirs now but that’s way outside my price range.
Great video! I have that same diesel heater and it heats great, but it does really smell like fumes inside the tent. Did you have this issue?
I haven’t had that issue, I think when I turned it on at home it did for a while but when I went camping I didn’t smell it. Do you keep a carbon monoxide detector in there? Maybe you can see if exhaust is actually getting in if it sets off the detector.
It's worth to check if your hot air inlet for indoor is too near by emission of diesel.
@@OXFOOT that’s a great idea, I will try that Thankyou!
@@nicely725 I will have to check that as well! Thankyou
Thanks for the reply , u got a new sub from india ❤
Where is this place? I would love to go out into the woods and come out with a LoPro bumper overnight! 😂 good stuff though.
I can’t remember the exact location of where it was but it wasn’t too far from Boulder.
hey man, what size are those tires? looks really cool
305/70/17 Nitto ridge grapplers. A ton of work to make them fit though.
How’s the GFC treating you for winter camping? I was wondering if you needed to use Reflectix?
It wasn’t the best because I had a V1 which had rivets and let in a lot of air. V2 would be better. I now have an iKamper 2.0 and will likely be going to an X Cover as they have that inner lining to them.
But I was still alright in the GFC just not as good as I could be in some beefier tents.
@@OXFOOT Good to know. I have a V2 camper on a truck. I like the iKamper line. I saw XO in Alaska, and then changed out to Alu-cab for their Nordic expedition; and wondered if that was a factor with the V2.
@@ninez5740 maybe so. The V2 fixed basically every complaint I had with the V1 other than I just needed more space. If it’s just me, then the GFC is fine but I got a dog and a GF now and I needed what the Ikamper provided.
@@OXFOOT Yeah it gets a bit snug with me and the wife, can’t imagine giving up space; plus the iKamper blackout factor is attractive.
I love this Caan of video super nice I hop one day take my kids to camp 🏕 nice hi from fort Smith Arkansas we have snow around here too
Funny enough I actually camped in fort Smith Arkansas one time driving across the country. Was driving from Nashville TN and that was just about the best place to stop. It was super muggy from the previous thunderstorm but that’s all I remember about it.
@@OXFOOT ey. Thank you 4 take your time to read my comment and answer back..... I enjoy watching this videos ...New subscriber to you channel hop get to see you next time you stop at fort Smith God bless 🙌
@@rutilorocha3457 I haven’t been back down there in a few years. My GFs brother lives in bentonville so I’ll be going to Ark more. Maybe I’ll come down to shoot some videos this summer.
@@OXFOOT wooo very nice. Yes Bentonville is by 70 miles north of fort smith 👏 🙌 👌
thanks for the video, got a question -- why park on a rock during snow storm?
nvm I think to keep it leveled
Yeah, got that question a lot. It works well but apparently it’s not a very common thing.
don't you have a cutting board made of wood? Time code 18:30
I do have a wooden one and a plastic one as well but when I’m filming, winter camping, thinking about the shot and repacking I’m just not thinking things through fully.
@@OXFOOT okay) it's just a pity the blade of the knife. it becomes dull and unusable
@@alexumka7922 yeah I’ve got a pretty big knife collection and I try to treat them well but sometimes shit happens. That knife wasn’t expensive.
@@OXFOOT well, that's nice) I also have several hiking knives, for example morakniv robust, I advise you) good luck traveling, nice to watch)
👋 from north Idaho. Loving your videos. From @arrowoverland
Not sure if you saw my chat comment but I found you and subscribed. How you like Idaho, I always joke that Colorado is too crowded and I might go to Boise one day.
@@OXFOOT we like it. North is a tad small for the amount of folks flocking here.
@@OXFOOT thanks. Not much of a UA-cam it our Instagram is 👌

I don’t want to sound like an idiot, but why park on top of two stones just on the right side?
One side of the hill was way higher than the other, so in order to level out the vehicle I needed to make the other side taller. Parking on rocks helped me get as close to level as I could.
But what about that bellows tube?!
This thing?

Really nice looking Toyota!! Is this a landcruiser?
Edit: its no landcruiser. But what Model is this?
It’s the Toyota 4Runner. This is the newest version of it. I think it used to be sold in other places outside of the US as the “Hilux Surf”.
Locking diffs, Atrac, Body on frame construction, but smaller engine than the Land Cruiser 4.0 liter V6 gas/petrol only.
@@OXFOOT ok thanks for the info. Sadly it looks like this Model is not available in my country Austria. Would be very nice if soon this will be availble.
@@SgtVegas do you have the FJ cruiser? It’s pretty much the same but with 4 doors.
@@OXFOOT no the FJ Cruiser is also not really selling around in my country.
Geceler uyuma uyanma birdaha.
Why did you park on the rock?
I was parked on a hill and putting the rocks under the tires brought that side up to the same height as the other side.
Makes it easier to sleep at night by getting level.
I made 10-foot cord for my controller to control my heater from my rooftop tent.
I considered doing that but usually most of the time I can do most things with the little bluetooth remote. But yeah that would be nice to have.
Which car is this ??? Please reply
It’s a 5th generation Toyota 4Runner. Only sold in the US and Canada though I think.
Who turned the camera on when he woke up in the morning?
🤔
You talking about the camera shooting from the outside? I may have to do things several times during these videos in order to do it the first time and then do it again for the camera.
I’d like to hear some narration next time
I think I’ll do one with some narration and then after I do two videos like that I’ll combine all the non talking parts from those two into one video with no talking.
@@OXFOOT That sounds great thank you!

Cast iron and a cheap knife. I’m not worried.
And where is the toilet?
I’ve got a few toilette bags I bought in Moab just in case. If I just gotta pee I use a tree.
@@OXFOOT Wait--you don't have a luxury spa toilet and bath???? whoa.
@@seang2012 my set up really isn’t that luxury. I have a GFC in this video (now an ikamper) and the diesel heater which I put together myself, but other than that it’s mostly stuff most people can afford or there’s another option for… like let’s say my drawers, they could just be bins.
@@seang2012 I think cooking on the open fire with a cast iron pan and all that is my preferred way of cooking also. I come from being broke camping with a hammock in college to having some money, and I hope I don’t come off as a person who needs expensive stuff to camp because that is not the case. Do I have expensive tastes… yeah sure I can’t deny that lol
@@OXFOOT actually I was thinking more how I would not survive without a full bathroom and the comforts of city life! Keep on doing what you do, buddy.
Talking is fine, or not. Like to heat your thoughts on trips
I’m going to upload both. I think I’ll do full trips and then upload a no talking version of the video where the edits run a little longer and are just made for chilling out.
The bag is 269.99 not a good deal at all to me I'll stick with my snugpack
What’s the temp rating on it? I’m always open to trying out new stuff.
No bears? No wolves? No wild boars? No foxes?
That would make for a more interesting video but I don’t see too many animals when I’m out usually. I’ll occasionally see moose and foxes, coyotes sometimes but mostly rodents.
@@OXFOOT no thank you, the video is interesting as it is! I can see you can fry a steak and you’re not bating all the jungle book and that’s interesting to me, trouble-free camping, must be nice…take care!
