I'm actually shooting a video clip with the Raven and even if it's a real pleasure, you need to be careful with low lights, the raven sensor is definitively not made for that. Great work, thanks for doing it.
I think they are around Sept.29 - Oct 1 at this Point. I ordered mine in Feb. and considering the current pace (not blaming RED or anyone, I know that it takes a while to finish a quality product) I don't think I will receive my Raven in 2016.
Amazing video guys! Very Informative :) I have a question, Im looking at either a RED Scarlet 4K (I think used they are going for about $6K with it all rigged up) or spending the extra money on the Raven? Also how would you go about buying one of these cameras? Save up cash or maybe borrow money from somewhere? and what is better, EF or PL and why? Thanks :)
The price of the RED media is still insane, some of their SSD:s have a 10x markup, can that really be justified? Plus the cost of the SSD module and SSD reader ofcours. Cant believe there has not been a huge protest against their media prices, some complaints but nothing big. I guess the filmmakers have the money to spend, but for us regular people, the price is WAY to high
Check out jinnimag, they're a new company in the UK who have basically ripped off the RED mags and are selling for like 1k less than their RED counter parts. The high end models even have a USB port on the back of them so that you can offload footage with the card still in the camera!
a proper movie normally pays itself, including equipments. with budgets like say 100 million dollars, an investor/backer for that particular project would question your picks of equipment if it's not one of the industry standards. in which case a red is, and so does the proprietary mag. which means those mags were rated for rather harsh filming condition. heat, flash memory longevity, connector endurance, etc. and they have strict quality control. how many of red mags error have you seen? compare that with hardisk/ssd failure numbers. and think about it this way, with proprietary, you have one name to blame if anything goes south, with universal standard? could be red, could be WD/seagate, could be another manufacturer that produces the universal mag. could be the flash manufacturer.
Kind of, YEA!. Thes cameras do have to be expensive. Welcome to the film business. The film is a business. Don't forget that. It's also art, but it's really a business. if you're in the film for real and want to make movies, real movies, then you should expect to spend maybe $30,000 on a new camera. If I wanted to create a short 40min fantasy epic or sci-fi I would want my budget to be no less then $250,000 and maybe half of that is just equipment.
Hi! I don't own a Red... I'm in the prospective phase comparing cameras. Your video taught me that you can sync Red Cine X with FCPX (when you adjust in the former it updates the clip in the latter.) Is there a capability of doing this in Premier as well? I work in FCPX...but for professional jobs, the market dictates having to work in Premier. Thank you!
Hi there, Where would you suggest buying one of these from? Also what set up would you go for in terms of batteries, rigs / handles. Also what frame rate is it capable at 1080p? Thanks
2K HD (1920x1080) has a top frame rate of 240.55 FPS.. You can download RED FPS from the app store, its a nifty app with the main presets and compression to give an instant read out of its max frame rate across all new RED cameras.
Depends on specs. An NVIDIA Multi GPU powered workstation Windows PC will own RED footage like its a twinkie while running Premiere with CUDA acceleration. Where a Mac depends on OpenCL so you need a high spec MacPro or 5K iMac.
Hey guys, nice video really...plz I would like you to tell me what do you think about the following I am mostly making movies and videos for night parties, I have roning for it too...so a very important question What about the autofocus, is it good, face tracking? low light ISO? thx a lot and I hope to hear back from you
red color science is like..... WAYYYYY above all the other cameras to me including the alexa series like RED colour science is like.... BOOM mind as blown.... good but some thing is that the sharpness of this video to be is bit off... its not as sharp maybe its the lens I don't know XD still want one....
The aperture is measured in T-Stops (rated by the actual amount of light going through the lens) vs F-Stop (calculated not measured) as well cine lenses will have less focus breathing and if a cine zoom will be parfocal rather than varifocal. Skylake Media in that case then yes HELL YES its magical xD and i have the system to edit on but what i dont have is the clients to pay for raw workflow :P
Well, first shots were kind of soft but I guess was just youtube buffering the 4k playback. When the three footage came in 1:08 I saw it was tack sharp! Thanks for the review!!

The ability to change ISO in post gets me every time. Basically all you have to worry about with this camera is focus.
and just a little bit of exposure work :P
And shutter speeeed
Fuckin red man! Geniuses!
BMCC do it too
Thanks for the great review and post workflow look... now RED just needs to actually ship my Raven :\ (pre-ordered in Jan.)

Rather than just saying that you like the cine lenses better, can you please explain or show the side by side differences and what makes them better.
Nice camera and review. Cheers from México.
Love the shots of CHICO!
Love that old 501 head. Man those things can take some abuse. I have one that's 20 years old.

The difference between the Zeiss glass and the Canon was shocking.

***** So stuff HAVE to be expensive to be used for filming movies? Can't really follow your logic on that one

Jesper Andersson their cameras aren’t for the regular people they’re a professional tool

awesome review, thanks a lot guys!
10/10 would unbox
There is no colors in my RED, only white. Can't fix it. Do not think I will use no Final Cut Pro either

WTF. I didn't liked that footage. It doesn't look cinematic... I KNow that URSa M 4.6k has many bugs, but it looks like real film...
yep the color grading is a but uninspired and flat
I would try to talk a bit more non-scripted, but really great video! Perfect length
The entire video was unscripted.
what an amazing review! you're the dopest man. you've got the clue. A capital thumps up
Thank you!

What camera did you guys shoot this review with? Awesome review!
Canon 1Dx mkII
1dx footage looks better then the REDs
what hahahha
1dx is same price as the brain of the raven
exactly why i didnt buy this camera. I wouldnt end up taking it anywhere because i would be too scared to break it. Reason why i sold my red scarlet
Lol, I had a Scarlet as well and I was SUPER paranoid. Having insurance helps quell the stress lol.
insurance?
Can anybody please tell me which computer is better for Red files PC or Mac and which one .. Thanks :)

l would like also to know which camera u shot this on, because the footage looks as good!
Camera b-roll and all a-roll was shot on the canon 1D X mkII
How is the camera in low light?
Different question. WHERE is the shot?!
Never mind, question answered in the video. :)
i never knew you could edit ISO afterwards in RAW ^^ i mean is this the same for every RAW video out there or is it a RED thingy ?
It's common among raw formats.
magical isn't it
Skylake Media keep making fun of the poor it helps xD
+KingStivan I wasn't making fun :/ it is pretty magical. I own 600ds have to rent cameras
Skylake Media in that case then yes HELL YES its magical xD and i have the system to edit on but what i dont have is the clients to pay for raw workflow :P
Looked like Stevensville, MT
It's not, its Chico, California.
Song used in intro?

+Videomaker thank you brotha
youbetcha
I kid you not I've heard this same soundtrack half a dozen times in the past week... everyone seems to be using it...
WHERE DO YOU FIND A RED RAVEN BODY FOR 6000$ I've been searching for month, starting price is at 9k$. Link me if i'm wrong.
They changed the price not long after the initial release. Early adopters got it for the ~$6000 price, but it got more expensive later.
Price?
Is it just me or it looks a bit soft for 4k???
got a timecode? it sure wasn't soft in production. Thank you for your comment and watching!
Well, first shots were kind of soft but I guess was just youtube buffering the 4k playback. When the three footage came in 1:08 I saw it was tack sharp! Thanks for the review!!
Thanks, yeah we blame UA-cam :P You're welcome!
The interview style of this review is a little unsettling and scripted feeling - why not present straight to camera?
We were trying something new
The footage did not look good.
