After the original 5, Full Moon planned to make a series of films where the puppets fought against classic horror villains like Frankensteins Monster and Dracula. But after the 5th film, the producers pulled out and they had to scale the budgets way back.

That’s unfortunate, I’d love to see those movies!

@@jaystreet46 me too. The 6th film was called 'Curse of the Puppet Master' because in the original script, it was going to be fighting against the Mummy in Egypt, and they kept the name. The original film was actually partially filmed. The following films would have been with Dracula and Frankensteins Monster. The trilogy would have kept Guy Rolfe as Andre Toulon. Way better than all the bad films we eventually got.

To add to this, the scripts for that cancelled trilogy were written by two people and were fully completed, as the plan was to shoot all three movies at the same time. Recently those writers actually ended up putting all three scripts online to read for free, on one of their websites.

I love the Action Lab Comics and how they treat the Puppets as characters & not just special effects. Making Torch the reincarnated nazi son of Toulon adds a lot to his character. And they even gave a backstory for why we don’t see Shredder Khan after the opening scene.

  • @bryanalexander7571

It's a minor point but Axis of Evil couldn't have taken place in '39 because there's a plot point where the guy couldn't fight in the war for health reasons and America didn't enter WW2 until '41.
Also, I think Littlest Reich fits if you accept that the N*zi was clearly not really Toulon. I mean, think about it. You had a steady stream of N*zis trying to figure out Toulon's secrets, well this jerk did, along with how to create knock off versions of Toulon's puppets. When he had to flee Europe, he needed an alias and chose to call himself Toulon and apparently made a living riding the old guy's shirttails. It was pre-internet so it's not like anyone was hitting Google to find out that the real Toulon had offed himself in Bodega Bay.

I reconciled the '39 and '41 death dates in my mind with a "movie" that takes place immediately after the suicide in '39 in which the puppets successfully resurrect Tulon and Tulon dies a second time in '41. That would make the incidents of 2 of the second resurrection was Tulon's body without his soul and thus is either evil or his body was taken over by another soul. This explains he sudden change to evil and his uncaring about leech woman being burned.

I gave up on these a while ago, I loved some of the earlier ones even though they jumped from one thing to another and never really finished off plotlines and cliffhangers but some of the later ones were a crime against film making. I can't believe Josh spent his Christmas sitting through all of these lol I was going to say I hope you all had a great Christmas but how can I knowing you were forced to watch this lot back to back 😂 You can just see the gritted pain through Josh's smile while his better half and daughter are beaming with joy 😂

I'd just flip the dates: Puppet Master 3 being in 39, Toulon telling the Puppets the Retro story in 41 as he's on the run, and then his death and the Axis movies being in 44....which would line up better World War II going on. At least for America.
The rest...oh I'm sure I could B.S. something up, but it would be a project.
And Merry Christmas to you and yours. Your daughter doing the 'Oh Hi Mark' thing was both hysterical and cute.

according to nat brehmer's complete history book, the author of action lab puppet master comic was going to do a comic that picked up after the original 1989 movie and was about megan selling the puppets to magrew from curse! so that's why people sandwich it between 1 and 2. I know it is super confusing either way

Wow, what a coincidence - I just watched/rewatched the entire series last month and was actually going to email you asking if you had any plans to revisit it.
I do like the puppets and am always glad for more from them, though I don’t think Full Moon does them justice. If you haven’t, I would recommend the recent fan film Puppet Master: Revival. It does an admirable job trying to stitch together the series continuity and features what I could only say is a degree of physical competency from the puppets that the mainline entries haven’t had for years.
Love the video, Josh! I hope you and your family have a great holiday. I appreciate everything you put yourself through for our entertainment, and I think it’s super cool when your family can get in on the fun as well! Take care!

I thought it would be an anthology movie, But it turned out to be a clip show of a bunch of the little Full Moon characters, with several of the Puppets mentioned. It's interesting that the fluid used to reanimate people in these movies is Re-Animator juice. Not sure whether this is a shared cinematic universe or if it is now just a trope that reanimation juice is always green (and glowing green when injected) much like how zombies always want to eat your braaaaains ever since "Return of the Living Dead."
Incidentally, if you like shared universes and Re-Animator, you should check out Pete Rawlik's books, almost all of which are set H.P. Lovecraft's shared universe (aka the Cthulhu Mythos). His first book was "Reanimators" that features Herbert West and several other HPL characters. Very fun stuff, especially if you like literary crossovers a la "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," and best of all... he's a stickler for timelines! Seriously, all his crossovers are consistent within the HPL stories, which is impressive given how many characters he keeps in play.

14:50 If I did the maths correctly, running 15 miles in 82 minutes is the equivalent to finishing a marathon (26.2) in two hours and twenty three minutes.
From my research, while that time wouldn’t be considered truly world-class, below three hours is considered insanely impressive for a non-professional.

  • @randycarter3111

I have an unhealthy fascination with these movies and their continuity. Doktor Death definitely takes place after part 2, as there was a deleted final scene where the main girl pulled out a flier for Camille’s puppet show from the end of part 2 (here’s the link: ua-cam.com/video/vlS46ZV8SgQ/v-deo.htmlsi=PKbrBvl2-Rhsd4c2 ) The only chronological aspect that I would disagree with is (and I’m probably the only person who does this) is I place 4 and 5 BEFORE part 1. Thus, the Bodega Bay Inn is still open AND when Rick opens the trunk to find the puppets, that trunk looks like it hasn’t been opened in decades. And in part 1, the puppets are already up and about when the psychics arrive at the inn.

I'm not sure Curse of the Puppet Master takes place in 1998. In the film, Tank says that the petrol station job pays him $30 a week. Minimum wage was $5.15 per hour in 1998.
Dr Magrew offers to pay him I believe it was $35 or $40 per week, I can't remember which, to come work for him, which is full time work.
So if the film is set in the 1990s, everyone is taking serious advantage of Tank and paying him significantly under the minimum wage.
Or the film is set in a prior decade. The wage seems to line up with what you might expect in the 1950s. It seems more likely to me that the Callander was an oversight rather than the writer or director had no concept of what people earn.

    S. Craig Zahler, Fabio Frizzi, and Thomas Lenon, as much as they tried with new material put into Puppet Master: The Littlest Reich, it kind of failed and burned up on reentry. It really sucks when that much talent is on display and working on a passion project and it falls apart. What was the controversy surrounding the production company, if I may ask? - Great video essay, per usual. TY

that don't bring it up in the films. he's never seen nor heard of again outside of that opening scene. i'm sure i'll address what happened to him in a different video, one that's not focused on the films only.

I'm only a casual fan of the franchise but I liked that in the first one the dolls weren't really evil so much as controlled by an evil person and later when they gave the backstory of the souls being from victims of the Nazis seeking revenge it made me cheer for them BUT I hated when they retconned them to be Nazi made monsters. First of all changing characters from being anti Nazi to pro Nazi isn't some little continuity error it is a full blown mythology change that shows little respect for long time viewers and second of all it makes them full on villains you need to see destroyed. Very disappointed by the franchise as a whole.

The one thing I don't like about these movies is Toulon's character. He keeps switching from hero to villain, it's very inconsistent. He should have been the hero the whole time.

Retro Puppet Master takes place in a alternate reality/timeline, that is why Toulon is still alive.

i hated they kept going back to the nazi storylines.
