How to Make Patch Panels | 1963 Ford F100 Rust Repair

  • This is how I make patch panels, with minimal tools! If you have some extra sheet metal laying around, give this a try. I don't use any fancy tools, other than a welder (obviously).
    This 1963 Ford F100 was in serious need of a rust repair. I fabricated a patch panel to replace a large rusted section of the hood.
    Pick up a mig welder, and give it a try! It is a skill that will keep you creating things for ever!

    Hey, Brother. Like you said, you may not be a professional, but you take your time and do beautiful work--evidenced not only on the F100, but also on the Nova. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished truck. Thanks for showing us how you do the work with what you have available.

      Thank you! They will both be making some serious progress in the next few months! Gotta get the Nova ready for this year!

    I don’t a lot of tools and what I have is a mish moss collection. The one quality item that I do have is a Lincoln 140 MIG welder. I don’t have much experience on it but I’m going to start practicing in anticipation to doing body work on my ‘62. Thanks for the tips!

      Thanks for watching the video! When I started, I reached out to an older guy in my community that had been doing it for years. I asked him if I could learn some skills from him. He replied "Go get a welder and learn yourself." He wasn't being rude. That's how he did it. So, that's what I did. I am so glad I took his advice!

    I've done some welding too and I'm certainly not a professional. But I get a little better and I learn more everytime I do it. The main thing is that you got all the rusty metal out and you got some good penetration with your welds. It's perfectly fine to use some Bondo but obviously not too thick or it will crack. Good work. What an improvement! Looking forward to future work on your projects. And remember there will always be criticism both positive and negative. You just have to take what you can use and toss out the rest.

      I agree with you 100%! I'm just trying to get better each time I go out in the Barn! I've learned a lot from watching other people on here. That's why I love doing these videos so much!

    What does it cost you to make that repair , $5? Take it to the shop and it would be $100 or $200 or....... lol 😁 I would call that a win! Nice job. Nice to see the flags up too! 😎👍

      Thank you! Yes, the repairs are super affordable this way! I really enjoy trying to figure out how to get all the shapes too! It's an art!

    Hi...I'm binge watching your resto videos of your 1963 F100. Enjoy them very much as I hope to get a 1965 F250 custom cab camper special caribbean turquoise like my dad had back in the day. To me it looks like your truck originally was mint green color code. Your new updated bench seat color scheme also seems to reflect that color. Am I correct in that assumption ?

      Thanks for watching the videos! The truck had been badly painted, to cover all the cosmetic issues. Both doors are from different trucks. I would assume the original color was white, since the harder to reach areas are all white. The bench seat I made on my channel as well. Started with fabric and sewing machine! lol

    Would a 110 welder be good enough to weld panels

    Great video! Keep up the good work. What thickness sheet metal are you using for your repair panel?

    • @JakeHarrington
      @JakeHarrington  2 роки тому

      For this section I used 20ga. It's more workable than a thicker gauge metal, but not paper thin like 22ga! Thanks for watching the video!
