Holy crap! Little late to the party but your daughter and friends just murdered that! Wow! SO, SO impressive and very true to the original. You must be so proud!
I gotta tell ya. This reached right down inside me and grabbed me. These kids worked hard and it shows! Had I been in that audience, I would have been on my feet cheering for them!
WOW. I can't imagine the talent, dedication, time, and effort it must have taken her to transcribe and arrange that entire piece by ear. VERY impressive. I hope she has continued to use her musical talents. Well done. This song lives on!
Thank you for your kind words, Chris. In fact, she has gone on to a college career, where she is also studying at a conservatory of music. She will earn her double degree in May 2017.
I was BESIDE myself with pride. Well, actually, I was crying because I was so moved and so deeply touched by what she had done and what she had done just for me.
June 2020...I teared up, watching this !! The effort, the creativity, the inspiration and whatever energies were required - To assure that this creation was approved to go ahead !! I saw this movie MANY times, when it was first released and after - And it is an important and relevant film, to the day.....I was amazed by the attention to detail, and your daughters' respect for the original piece. I am so pleased that I opted to listen. It would be so gratifying to know....what came of your daughter....Smart, Creative, Driven - The world is her oyster !!
Are you still around? My nostalgic wanted me to look for this exact song!! I was 14 in 1980 and this is still one of my favorite songs!! If you have family or so in this, congratulations and I loved it!!
I just saw this and it almost made me cry. What a fantastic tribute to you and what a stellar job they did to bring one of the best endings to a movie ever, back to life! Caylen's vision in bringing this to her generation brings forward what many of us had in the 80's growing up, hope! Just spectacular! Well done to everyone involved.
I haven't even got to the performance and I cried when they said it was for her mother and she smiled... this is about to kill me. BRB. Back. Yep. DEAD! She did THAT by ear? Do NOT ever let this girl let music slip out of her life. She has it in her heat and soul. I couldn't be more proud of her and I don't even know her. Her soul is shining. And no, that was onions...
I love this message . . . so sweet! Music is now her life . . . she is a professional musician. She has been accepted to Juilliard and will begin her two-year program at then end of August 2022. It has been my joy as her mother watching her become . . . her.
This song and the melody have stayed with me since I first heard it when I was in eighth grade (1981)! So much so that I heard this song last night in a dream and woke up humming it all morning. I'd actually forgotten about this song until today. I decided to google the lyrics and came across this beautiful performance! If this were my daughter's gift to me, I would have been in tears! What a lovely gift!
That was where I was! I don't know you or her, but this song has always been SO difficult to perform and her smile at you when she thinks you might realize what's going on is... just beautiful.
Wow! I was 16 when Fame was released. I saw it in a theater over 10 times. To this day, the force that is represented by a group of talented young people who come together after working hard using their collaborative gifts, moves me to tears. I chose tonight to look up versions of this only because my 14 year-old is currently attending a performance of Fame Jr. presented our local Intermediate school. We are lucky to live in an extremely arts-focused community filled with teachers and students who know how to pull out of a group what I witnessed in this video. Bravo! What a touching and amazing moment in your life. This was a pleasure to behold. Yes, I cried!
Thank you, Julie. It is actually hard not to read through these comments and not cry. Everyone is so kind with comments so beautifully encouraging. Thank you!
I've only just seen this and I was stunned by the energy and talent. Then I read your comment 'JazzWife' and it made the piece all the more wonderful to watch. You daughter is AMAZING
I first saw Fame when I was six, and my father (the music teacher at a rural high school in WV) has his kids watch it during his first year teaching. This song, and Paul McCrane’s “Is It Okay If I Call You Mine,” forever good special spots in my heart, and to this day, they still bring me to tears. When I found this video, I was so proud of her for her accomplishment, particularly at the high school level. And yes - I wept, again.
Thank you, Marcus. I know exactly how you feel . . . well, my version of how you feel. It was a special movie with amazing songs. I was so proud to be a part of it and even more proud that my daughter paid such a beautiful tribute to me, my classmates, my high school, and this amazing movie.
What a wonderful tribute to you JazzWife. It is times like these that the Lord helps us to realize that allllllll of our hard work, sacrifice, blood sweat, tears, our Labor of love is not in vain. I think it's appropriate to say, " The apple doesn't fall far from the tree." Congratulations to your gifted and talented beautiful daughter and hats off to you and dad as well for a job well done! " Matthew 7:16, And you shall know the tree by it's fruit" PEACE&BLESSING!
Superb, just assisting one of my mates to organise an reunion from the 80's!Justwatched your feed, brought back a lot of memories! wonderful choice from the young lady, a very difficult piece of music done extremely well! well done
All these many years later, it remains my joy to have been in the movie. Watching it always, and I mean, brings tears to my eyes. And to this day, my high school classmates are all still close . . . the school was an amazing experience and the movie was a special experience.
I woke with this song going through my head yesterday morning. Naturally, I looked it up and saw the commercial version. Then, this video popped up on my recommended videos. So glad I watched this. I have often told my wife i remember being in Music Theory in High School and we dabbled in Music Theory. I was a student at the Interlochen National Music Camp in Michigan (Summer Session) in 1971. I learned a bit there, too. However: when I learned Music Dictation/Transcription, we never, ever, got this ambitious. You have much to be proud of. What a joy to see a young person so in love with music that she can put on paper what she hears. This is a talented young lady. I hope she goes far in her endeavors. Thank You for sharing.
Thank you, Dave. She is off to Juilliard at the end of August 2022. But it is clear to me, as I watch her grow in her music, that this is just the beginning for her. I appreciate your kind words.
I don’t know why this song popped into my head, but I’m so glad it did. As a trumpet player during the era of Fame, I dreamed of a professional career. Your daughter and her classmates brought tears of joy to my eyes and heart. Bravo!!!!
Hi Paul, she is now a professional musician. She plays with an artist (Blue Note) named Kandace Springs. You can check them both out. Thank you for your kind words.
This was truly amazing to watch. To see this arrangement re-created all these years later is a testament of just how powerful that film really was. Your daughter did a phenomena job and brought to a new generation a special magic rooted in drive, determination and dreams of a successful career in show business. She is a visionary, keep building little sister "FAME" is yours now.
Wow! Just wonderful!!! You must be so proud. String instruments are so hard. I've been learning to play the violin for 4 years now. I'm 45. It was one of my dreams to learn to play. Those kids play with such ease. It was amazing to hear and to watch! Thanks for sharing that!
Hi Scott, Something brought me back to this video today. Thank you for your message and your question about my daughter. Well, she has been accepted to Juilliard and will start at the end of August. She plays bass these days and is really going places . . . literally and figuratively.
This is such an amazing work done by your daughter, she must be 24 now, transcribing by ear a whole partition, it is a incredible work which I am looking at with great admiration. It is a favorite song of mine. Well well done, I give her all my credits and I really hope she can make a career in music. She's so talented and gifted that it would be a shame she wouldn't continue working on it. I can understand you must be a very proud mother. Congratulations to your daughter.
I predict that this will be the catalyst to propel this bright young lady into a burgeoning music career! Knowing how difficult it can be to PLAY by ear, I can't begin to imagine how much work it took her to arrange that, just by listening to the song, probably DOZENS of times!
Beautiful tribute to Fame (I was 21 when it was released). Good performance! congratulations. There were technical problems (microphones were uneven, camera person was terrible) and some choir singers were more worried with other affairs; still, it was wonderful to remember the spirit of the song that still is alive and will live for ever. Congrat!
Wow and Wow! You should see if anyone else at the performance took a video, then edit it together. It's worth it! Five years on, I'd love to see what else she's doing with her music.
Well, she is a professional musician, who will begin at Juilliard at the end of August 2022. She is really a special, special musician and human being.
Wow! Oh, wow! Thank you so much for sharing 😍🥰. I just saw this now (1/04/2023), so this beautiful and talented young lady must have gone successfully into a music career since. This has always been one of my very favorite and inspirational piece of music. JazzWife, you noted above that you and your high school classmates sang this song in the 1980 movie FAME, are you part of the duet pair? If so, I love your voice every time I hear this song, and your daughter sounds just like you! 🥰
So sweet. I am not one of the duo but those are my classmates from high school. I am in the actual graduation scene! You are right about her career in music . . . she is heading to France this summer to play bass. I couldn't be more proud of my daughter. Thank you for being a fan of FAME. It is such an important part of the lives of so many and a special moment in my own life.
Thank you. The original included me and my classmates as high school students. There is a big close-up of me singing in the chorus. That was a million years ago but it still chokes me up. Thank you, Gracev for your kind, kind words.
It's been a while since your daughter did such an amazing job with this, I would love to know what she's up to today (8-4-2023) Most people don't realize how much it takes to orchestrate a project like this. Thanks for sharing
Such a beautiful tribute. Everytime I watch this or the original, I always think how great it is to have so many young people get together in harmony. 🥰
