  • Transmit and receive an infrared (IR) signal over your HDMI cable.
Easily send an infrared (IR) signal over your HDMI cable. Control a video source from a remote location by sending its remote control IR signal over your HDTV's existing HDMI cable. This adapter kit uses the HDMI CEC channel to transmit the IR signal over the length of the HDMI cable.

I have one of these and it works nicely. To answer the "Why not use use...?" question, the answer is that IR cables need to be kept short, and this system allows you to send IR a much longer distance via the HDMI.
Of course, I had to laugh at 2:14 because they showed one of the biggest weaknesses of this device: the IR cable sticks out sideways and, depending on the device you're using, can block another port (like the RJ-45 port on their example Blu-Ray player) or not fit at all if the shape of the back of the TV is contoured/recessed.

Thats not always works. Not all the HDMI cables support this function. I dont have any idea to describe if the cable has to be V1.3, v1.4 etc, but be careful about the HDMI cable and try different cables if IR signal extention is not working.

Why not just use an IR extender? It serves the same purpose and cheaper.
