I'm a 3d artist working in games, but I've also spent 2 years working in 3d scanning for films using LIDAR and photogrametry. I just want to say - Props to both Norm and Jeremy for some of the most insightful and relevant questions I've ever heard asked about 3d scanning and especially the challenge of bringing scan data to real time! Spot on questions show a clear understanding not just of the tech but the process of capturing on site and processing in office.
This reminds me of the first time I used Google Earth VR. It was awe inspiring and lets you see how small we really are. In addition, it was a good way for my wife to get a good idea of some of the places she wanted to visit in the world. VR has a long way to go but I hope it stays around.
What an awesome video! Thanks guys! I wonder if someday, our mixed reality headsets will be constantly updating a photogrammetric model of the entire world kind of like how smartphones feed into traffic data in real time.
This aspect of VR is most intriguing. Actual reality virtualized; the matrix begins haha. I wonder if you guys could explain what a good "standard" rig would be for anyone wanting to go out and do this themselves. Colleges and universities should have their students start harvesting this data too.
I watch nearly every episode of projections that comes out.. and this is my favorite episode ever. This stuff is so cool and I am so glad places like cyark are around. I have a vive and I am REALLY hoping MasterWorks: Journey Through History works with revive!!! I can't wait to see this stuff at home. I did photogrammetry of my video game room and it was so much fun!
Norm, Can we please start getting links to what you guys are talking about?? I want to download these, but can't find anything based on what you guys said. Please???
They could use the "Fly"-feature you talk about at the end like an easter egg. If it feels like a secret it's not going to be judged the same way, and people just browsing won't see it and won't be bothered by the "scaffolding".
Just the idea to have to deal with trees in these scenarios makes me want to cry. I guess the only reasonable solution is to cut them from the high quality scan, and replace them with optimized models... But I'm curious to know
This is really cool! I'm curious though as to what consumer level software is alluded to for loading models into 3D space at home? Oculus Medium? Home brewn apps made in Unity or UE? Or are there easier solutions to quickly pop into 3D environments that are still higher fidelity than sketchfab?
Maybe this is because it's VR, but the video at 8:00 while it has fair textures it seems to be very low-rez in terms of the geometry. I hope there are ways to view this data with a much more accurate point cloud.
did you guys already discuss about vr art software? I follow this artist on instagram, named Goro Fujita. He's known for making 3d painting using an app called Quill if im not mistaken. His works are beautiful, and from his recent videos, it appears that Quill is starting to include animation. If you guys didnt cover this yet, pleeease consider it! XD
and now history in video games, if only some games where more historically accurate, play as some person in history or a solider or something like that
They're probably also using Photoscan, I think that's better for far off things in your scans and reality capture is better for close up work but I've only used Photoscan and have heard good things about Reality Capture
Haven't used Photoscan but Reality Capture is very good though certainly better for closer things but I recognized the program being shown in the video.
Most of their spaces are real 3D, where you can lean in your head, walk around your space, lean over, crouch down, etc. It's a very compelling experience. I was very impressed. Here's a link to the Oculus page where you can download the experience for free: www.oculus.com/experiences/rift/1364510803659063/
Hi. I discovered a UA-cam channel with a pretty interesting concept. Basically you follow the guy while he's exploring a fantasy world in VR. It's still quite rough but the guy creates everything and has very good role playing skill. You should check this out, look for Weird Wizard Dave on UA-cam.
It looks like they're shooting for 90fps on some lower-end hardware. It's too bad they couldn't have multiple quality options to choose from based on what the user's hardware is capable of. Obviously, that would require even more time and work on their part, so it is not reasonable. I just look forward to when they don't feel the need to water their data down so much. It would be great if they could ditch their made-caused climate change agenda as well; it will prove to be foolish if real scientific research is ever allowed to catch up with the addition of data over a longer period of time than we currently have.
Is the realityvirtual.co software you referred to available to experience on either the Rift or Vive? Last night I played Cyark's Masterworks, the subject of this Tested video and it was very impressive, a great experience overall.
Cyark, worked within the limitations of VR, having to produce 90 FPS and took into account the capabilities of the average VR capable PC. I'm not saying your comments are not valid, however it's not clear to me that the referred to link (realityvirtual.co) is even offering a product available for VR users?
+Devin Wiesner Right from their website, first bullet point: "6° of movement 'true VR' cinematography - photo-realistic 3D asset & environment acquisition for the purposes of VFX / VR / Desktop / Mobile & Web based applications." So yes, they are making VR apps, as well as mobile and desktop based apps.
What it sounds like when fellow nerds try to hype/push VR ua-cam.com/video/87MkWPCBnSA/v-deo.html Sounds a lot like when tech companies tried to hype 3D TVs.
These guys are just excited about tech, VR is the first really impressive development in computing in a long while and it encompasses all of tested's areas of interest. TV companies were trying to innovate in their dying medium (based on the success of 3D cinema?), VR is a new medium that is nowhere near what we want it to become.. yet.

fearian did you go to school to learn how to do this or just take online classes? Aspiring motion graphic artist here

I love these photogrammetry spots, thanks Tested. Downloading MasterWorks now
What an awesome video! Thanks guys!

love your shirts guys!

They are using "Off the shelf" software called reality capture. Granted there is still a ton of work required for optimising the models
They could use the "Fly"-feature you talk about at the end like an easter egg. If it feels like a secret it's not going to be judged the same way, and people just browsing won't see it and won't be bothered by the "scaffolding".
Great video, thanks for this one
Sweet! When you do photogrammetry you'll find a bush throwing the whole scan off meanwhile LIDAR is picking up the nick in a wall 20 metres away XD
Just the idea to have to deal with trees in these scenarios makes me want to cry. I guess the only reasonable solution is to cut them from the high quality scan, and replace them with optimized models... But I'm curious to know
I havent still released my photogrammetry environments BECAUSE OF THE EFFIN TREES!!...
lots of crying and subsampling has happened.. and computer upgrades..
Wait until machine learning can fill in the gaps for you.
Also grass, shrubs, undergrowth etc.
John Doe exactly. Right now we're quite limited to objects without huge amounts of detail.
THIS IS INCREDIBLE!!

Excellent video guys! Thanks for the brilliant insight!
I can't wait till the abilities of our graphics cards catch up to the full resolution of the lidar and photogrammetry scans
Is that Fredrik Reinfeldt the former prime minister of Sweden!?
Had no idea he was working with VR and 3D-scanning now as well!
Cool, Thanks guys, I'll check out that app! Keep Crushing it Gentlemen 👍
Great work.
A Vive version please. :)
That is really cool.
Maybe this is because it's VR, but the video at 8:00 while it has fair textures it seems to be very low-rez in terms of the geometry. I hope there are ways to view this data with a much more accurate point cloud.
I have a HTC VIVE and if you have a chance try one most people that try want one or buy one its unreal

This is Oculus only? WHy?? I am so disappointed I haven't been able to get revive working.
Vive vive vive
Travel without leaving your house thats so sweet!!!!!!!!!!
and now history in video games, if only some games where more historically accurate, play as some person in history or a solider or something like that
They should really work on their microphones and audio.
Sounds fine to me.
Yeah, they were pretty quiet
A really interesting story, excellent video guys!
What Photogrammetry software are they using?
Reality capture, you can get it on steam.
So many smartwatches!
What VR game are they releasing?
Only for Oculu$. Why not for the rest of VR world and more of the 50 % of the total users? (OpenVR=Vive, OSVR, Pimax, LG, Windows MR...)
Please re-hang that canvas, i got the shakes over here.

I miss one day builds
What happens when you time your head in the stereo 360 spaces? And you can't lean in and out can you? This messes with my head...

can we please change norm?
Also here's a link of Homestead. Alpha. Do enjoy. drive.google.com/open?id=1h4jk49dtfcFkiYciSfcGvNv-ZwH2wBXI
Norm is smart, articulate, and professional, but he has the charisma of a house plant.

This looks really bad in front of the photogrammetry demo by realityvirtual.co
Is the realityvirtual.co software you referred to available to experience on either the Rift or Vive? Last night I played Cyark's Masterworks, the subject of this Tested video and it was very impressive, a great experience overall.
I'm guessing they have a much higher budget per site than Cyark does.
Agree.
Poor data cleanup, poor object topology, flat shaders with no specular or or any real time elements and overall low quality of the maps.

This was unbelievably dull.
Most boring episode of Projections yet.... yaaannn. Please go to Oculus headquarters and do some snooping around there for some new VR info lol
Yawn

lmao still hearing "vr is the same as 3D TVs!!!" in 2018 is hilarious.
you know this is a vr show right?
