But didn't Lady Furness kind of steal Dudley Ward's thunder when she went on that African safari with the Prince in her stead?.... Just the same way that Wallis took him over when Lady Furness had to go home to America and be with her sister in her custody fight for her daughter, Gloria Vanderbilt...Furness should have been more selective about who she chose to watch her "Little Man" while she was away...I am sure she was well-aware of his proclivity for married women, and Simpson was one of the most scheming..

Yes, it amazes me any woman would entrust the self serving Wallis Simpson with an eligible man - perhaps Thelma thought Wallis was just too plain to interest the Prince! Looking at photos of the various women he was involved with, Wallis was by far the least attractive. There's no accounting for taste!

I think no one would have thought he would be interested in Wallis! Its still a mystery what he saw in her to this day!

Royal affairs with married women was a custom, not a proclivity. The practice was not unique to David nor to the British. Married women were preferred because they were less problematic in terms of scandal and liability.

@@cathiiannii Recall that Cleopatra and Anne Boleyn were not renowned for beauty. Its been said that some choose partners based on an unresolved conflict. For example, a daughter might choose an abusive husband because her father was abusive. Some men do not outgrow their childhood. I think that was true of David for he remained self indulgent throughout his life. He chafed at his royal duties long before he wore the crown. Wallis was not in awe of his position and was even disrespectful which presented a refreshing change. He could feel she was an accomplice to his rebellious streak and found delight in her brash American attitude. Wallis was considered quite witty though some found her conversation vulgar in the extreme.

I adore Freda Dudley Ward; she - and perhaps Mrs Keppel for Edward VII - was a perfect royal mistress. But oh, that callous dismissal. I blame both David AND Wallis. Apparently he never spoke to her again, or her daughters, despite having been part of their lives for years. Awful...

I'm curious. For those of you who wonder what Edward saw in Wallis Simpson, what makes you feel he should have shared your tastes in what makes a woman appealing?
Ironically, Art Buchwald had a low opinion of Edward and a high opinion of Wallis.

I have never understood what he saw in her. She was never a beauty, and by the time they met was consierably shop-worn [to put it as politely as possible].
Simply the ultimate social climber. The second sentence applies equally to Charles and Camilla. At least Charles and Camilla aren't betraying Britain to a
foreign enemy, so far as we know....

Rather pathetic that a man would have no problem with his wife being a mistress for another man. Why bother getting married at all? Incredibly hypocritical if ask me.

Do you have any background knowledge. He was reputed to be a gentlemen and he loved his wife. Everything got way out of control. Wallis realised that too late and was desperate to escape.

Thelma should have played Wallis as I think she looks more like the real Wallis, and talks like her.

As usual when this tired old story is translated to the screen, the actors cast are far more attractive than the real Edward and Mrs Simpson! Edward Fox is far too butch and the actress playing Wallis is far too feminine. I reckon Edward Fox should have played Wallis Simpson and the actress here as Wallis would have been more convincing as the effeminate Edward!
