Thanks for showing us this. I'm starting to do timelapse of the Sun's surface using Autostakkert, Imppg, PixInsight, PIPP and PhotoDirector. One of the many hurdles has to do with flicker and shaking which I normalized in Pixinsight and stabilised in PIPP. But I think I may use your workflow and start also intergrading some zooming in movement effect. Very "to the point" video, I enjoyed it.
also you can get some flicker even if you have everything set to manual if your aperture is closing every time the shot is taken, this is because it's a mechanical device that will be slightly different every time it closes, to avoid this you can either shoot wide open, or in live view

Great run through of the softwar. Something we've found is that you can reduce a fair amount of flicker in the initial shooting stage, though LRTimelapse is invaluable. Some of the flicker can be caused by small mechanical variations in the shutterspeed. These variations are in absolute measures so as an example a variation of 1/10,000 of a second is a much larger percent variation of 1/1,000 of a second than of 1/100 of a second. That means a shutter speed of 1/10000 will see more noticeable flicker than 1/100. So use a slower shutterspeed (ND Filters are handy for this). The aperture also changes between each frame so a wider aperture will mean the variations are smaller on a percent basis. +TravelingMel Interesting. That makes good sense. It's always better to try and not have the flicker by doing things in the field that make the images better. I've never had huge problems when I'm in manual modes, but for the perfectionist, I think you're right those adjustments would help. Thanks for sharing Henry!
i believe this one in video caused cuz of electronic aperture as he shows aperture drops f10 to f9, there are videos about these problems also. Manual lenses best way to go :D
Hi there I have just downloaded the free version of LRtimelapse and was wondering if you could stay in LRtimelapse to stabalise the clip? and why you take it into Final cut to do this Also I kind of got lost when you exported the 4K image then put it back into Finalcut etc Need to learn more

There should be a solution for video already in video mode. It still has frames. I do timelapse that goes straight to video from a weatherproof rugged action cam. It inherently avoids problems expensive SLRS have in auto modes. But the extreme environmental light level goes dramatically up and down as clouds move across the sun (bright/dim/bright/dim) and so the camera assumes it's data I want. It's not really an artifact. It's natural, but too fast (this is Florida near the coast with little puff after little puff of small, dense, sun-eclipsing clouds that last seconds in real life. If some software would simply average and smooth out brightness levels from frame to frame then it would fade brighter and darker smoothly instead of strobing.
I did exactly as you shown, except the Stabalizing in Final Cut Pro part. But, the flickering is still visible significantly. Any idea what could ge wrong? I have the free version of the LR Timelapse. Could it be the reason?
Hello thank you for the great video! All other filters are there but LRT5 Full sequence filter is missing in Lightroom? Do you know how to bring it back? Every time I export the time lapse is not in sequence. thank you :-)

+Let's Make A Video You can use the trial for time-lapses under 400 images though... that's pretty handy. Especially nice if you're not doing pro-work.
If youre still on UA-cam, Just curious how much RAM and storage you had available or of your computer had Lightroom loaded on and SSD, it runs soooooooooo much faster than my HP laptop with 8gb ram :(
So Final Cut Pro's stablization removed the flickering? I was waiting for you to do the deflickering since you kept on mentioning through out the entire video that there is still flickering. However, after you stabilized it in Final Cut Pro, the flicker went away.
Stabilization only stabilizes the video. I think he just skipped the part where he have to deflicker it second round since it's already looking better than the first one. It's not perfect but you can try do the deflicker many times (in LRT) and see the results.

+Plane Window Seat If you have Lightroom there is a feature called "spot removal". Super easy way to remove annoying dust spots. Do the same way as described before, do your fixes on one of the photos then sync with all the other pictures. Your corrections will then be applied to all shots you have. Have a go and let us know how it went! Good luck!
Thank you for advice. I've tried this already but it doesn't look good in final time lapse movie when clouds are present. Perhaps the other option would be to remove spots from every image separately or from batch of the images. This is time consuming though. I just wandered if there is any other method.

Thanks for the vid, it was a great help for me to get my workflow right! I would also like to share an interesting experience that is worth knowing of. When I started doing time lapses, I had no idea about LRTimelapse and hence binned so many gigabytes of photos because of flickering.. The strange thing was that I had FLICKERING even when I was in FULLY MANUAL! then I started to play around and found that when I start removing my lens then the aperture also starts closing so I did a time lapse with the lens being semi-detached and voila, there was no flickering at all! The reason for this is most likely the fact that the electronics of the camera (or the lens) cannot always set the same aperture 100% accurately, but rather 99.99% accurately and that causes flickering (experienced on Sony A57 and Canon 650D too, maybe higher-end cameras do not do it...) But this workflow is just pure gold and no need to fiddle around with half-removing the lens!

Since 4k videos can be scaled down to lower definition without sacrificing some details (i know sounds crazy). Yet, FCPX saves a lot of time in stabilizing.

I'm wondering if you could recommend a editing App as I'm just starting out and I'm doing my editing on Samsung Tablet G3, most of the video is done with a Hero 3+ silver and with Samsung MX20 cam and the photos with Kodak Z981. I'm not trying to edit a masterpiece just projects around the house and family trips.
+GigantorsDAD - Hmm. I honestly don't know a good non-apple editing program for your tablet. imovie is pretty good but I don't know if you can download that on android.
I don't know how to do it without LRtimelapse. They do have a free version though - I think you can use 400 still frames, which is something like 13 seconds of video. That should be enough for most people.

Ya know I'm having an issue where when I Drag to Lightrooom it pulls up the folder on my desktop and won't allow me to take the steps you are following or that are outlined in LRTL.... Any ideas how to avoid this? I tried deleting the folder from LR but it still finds the folder on the desktop.
+Fixed Focus Media Hmm. The trick is to start in LRTL. I've had some problems if I play with it in LR first. Try moving that folder around and renaming both it and the photos. Also, make sure the folder is deleted from LR. If that doesn't work, I'm not sure where to start.
Hi Rob. I have seen all past tutorials on how to make and improve a time laps. In other videos you used adobe after effect but in this you used final cut pro and I think it is much easier to use. What you think is best? Also Adobe after effect also has a problem is not allowing me to render a video with H.264 in 4k or anything higher than 2000x2000 in H.264 so I had to use Apple ProRes 422 to export my time laps in 4k.
Hi Rob, can LR lapse be used without Lightroom or is there a workflow to go around using Lightroom? I use Capture One and so far I don't think LR lapse is compatible with Capture One
Hi! I have a workflow question, regarding how to best combine the learning from this tutorial and from your previous timelapse tutorials. When using LRTimelapse in this video, you only manipulated the two keyframe images, and then let LRTimelapse do the rest of the work. Does this replace the step from your previous tutorial where you developed just one image from the middle of the sequence, and then let Lightroom sync the changes to the entire sequence? Or should one do this process of developing one image and syncing to the rest before moving on to LRTimelapse, choosing the keyframes and following the rest of the steps outlined in this tutorial? Thanks!
+Michael Coombes Good question. So, if you're using LRTimelapse, you have the ability to add some gradation to your timelapse. It does esentially replace that step - you're right. It's also a more advanced technique for sure. Most basic timelapses won't need this sort of manipulation, but it's especially useful in a) day to night time-lapses b) sunsets/sunrises and c) flickering timelapses. It takes more time going through LRTimelapse (although not bad once you figure it out). I don't use it for everything - but it does give a nice end result.
Thank you very much, great tutorial! I was wondering, actually, can I do the same in Premiere? And can I remove flicker if I have been making a shot a day for 6 months. I was shooting RAW at the same time of day most of the time, but the weather was very different and I often had to adjust white balance settings. I tried to edit it as much as I could before assembling the final cut (in Premiere, not the best soft to edit time lapse, I know). Overall it's ok, demonstrating how there are sunny days and cloudy days throughout the year, if it could be made smoother, then it'd be great!

Do you have a spot in the frame that doesn't seem to change exposure - that was the key in this one!

Exporting files from lightroom in jpeg makes it compressed right ? why not in a TIFF or DNG format so that we could preserve the quality for later ?

I'm wondering if you could recommend a editing App as I'm just starting out and I'm doing my editing on Samsung Tablet G3, most of the video is done with a Hero 3+ silver and with Samsung MX20 cam and the photos with Kodak Z981. I'm not trying to edit a masterpiece just projects around the house and family trips.

I don't know how to do it without LRtimelapse. They do have a free version though - I think you can use 400 still frames, which is something like 13 seconds of video. That should be enough for most people.

Great tutorial, thanks. Quite a long process, but very thorough. Is there a way of exporting the timelapse as a movie file direct from LR before you go through the long winded process in FCPX though?

So I should skip the timelapse option in my camera and just go for interval shooting?
The timelapse option makes it easy but the interval shooting option will ultimately give you a better timelapse. It does take longer.

In camera timelapse function is just for beginners shoot raw by interval to get the best footage for postproduction
Ya know I'm having an issue where when I Drag to Lightrooom it pulls up the folder on my desktop and won't allow me to take the steps you are following or that are outlined in LRTL.... Any ideas how to avoid this? I tried deleting the folder from LR but it still finds the folder on the desktop.
And by the way I love your tutorials. Best I've found yet.
+Fixed Focus Media Hmm. The trick is to start in LRTL. I've had some problems if I play with it in LR first. Try moving that folder around and renaming both it and the photos. Also, make sure the folder is deleted from LR. If that doesn't work, I'm not sure where to start.
I know loads of ppl probably already asked; but what is the best interval between pictures to obtain best results for time laps like this one???
2 seconds is s good start...but it depends on your clouds.

I have seen all past tutorials on how to make and improve a time laps. In other videos you used adobe after effect but in this you used final cut pro and I think it is much easier to use.
What you think is best?
Also Adobe after effect also has a problem is not allowing me to render a video with H.264 in 4k or anything higher than 2000x2000 in H.264 so I had to use Apple ProRes 422 to export my time laps in 4k.
Honestly, if you can skip AE, you might as well. It just adds another step. I like AE's stabilization better but that's the main reason.

But what if I have an already made up time-lapse video with the mobile phone...how do I deflicker that?
It seems everyone uses Lightroom. Any way of not getting flicker without Lightroom?
I just did a night timelapse with my drone and its all set to manual and its flickering like crazy

Hi Rob, can LR lapse be used without Lightroom or is there a workflow to go around using Lightroom? I use Capture One and so far I don't think LR lapse is compatible with Capture One
Well, I'm not exactly sure. I think you have to go through Lightroom...
how you want to keep manual setting for sunrise/sunset?
there is about 3EV difference
use manual mode and change the parameters manually use lrt holy grail to process

Hi! I have a workflow question, regarding how to best combine the learning from this tutorial and from your previous timelapse tutorials. When using LRTimelapse in this video, you only manipulated the two keyframe images, and then let LRTimelapse do the rest of the work. Does this replace the step from your previous tutorial where you developed just one image from the middle of the sequence, and then let Lightroom sync the changes to the entire sequence? Or should one do this process of developing one image and syncing to the rest before moving on to LRTimelapse, choosing the keyframes and following the rest of the steps outlined in this tutorial? Thanks!
+Michael Coombes Good question. So, if you're using LRTimelapse, you have the ability to add some gradation to your timelapse. It does esentially replace that step - you're right. It's also a more advanced technique for sure. Most basic timelapses won't need this sort of manipulation, but it's especially useful in a) day to night time-lapses b) sunsets/sunrises and c) flickering timelapses. It takes more time going through LRTimelapse (although not bad once you figure it out). I don't use it for everything - but it does give a nice end result.

Thank you very much, great tutorial! I was wondering, actually, can I do the same in Premiere? And can I remove flicker if I have been making a shot a day for 6 months. I was shooting RAW at the same time of day most of the time, but the weather was very different and I often had to adjust white balance settings. I tried to edit it as much as I could before assembling the final cut (in Premiere, not the best soft to edit time lapse, I know). Overall it's ok, demonstrating how there are sunny days and cloudy days throughout the year, if it could be made smoother, then it'd be great!
Great Question Anna. I'm not exactly sure. I'm hoping to do a tutorial on something like this in the future, but for now, I'm not sure how you'd deflicker it. There are some plugins that do a decent job too. This being one of them: revisionfx.com/products/deflicker/fcp/

I think you can get a trial version - right? Should do about 400 images (a 13-second timelapse). Should be plenty for what you need.
