First of all it is true that the fundamentals of automobile engineering is based on the laws of physics, there is no doubt about it, you are right. But what you fail to understand is that Musk said that his physics degree helped him in understanding aerospace engineering, he did not say that his physics degree led him building rockets, rather it gave him a strong background to study other subjects which are based on physics like in his case was aerospace engineering. I am also sure your physics professor will find studying any form of engineering way easier compared to a person who has never studied physics in shape or form assuming that your professor is proficient in it. And, yes you are absolutely right that having a physics degree does not mean that you are an aerospace engineer, but what is means that it can be easy for you to study engineering or other forms of subjects which are based of the physics.
