I use an Acasis 40Gbps USB4 enclosure holding a WD SN770 2tb SSD on a M2 Mac Mini. My read /write speed are in the 2700-2800 MBPS.

I love your reviews since technology changes so rapidly. I have a Mac Studio in my future so this is relevant information for me. I can't test all these different enclosures/SSD's; your work is saving me lots of money and makes me an educated buyer to purchase products that will work well for me without breaking the bank.

I've used Orico enclosures for years, and they're very reliable. I have two that I bought based on your recommendations for NVME storage for my Mac, and I have a couple of them with 3.5 HDDs that I use for archiving files.

After watching your video I went on Amazon for the ORICO R40 2 TB 40 Gbps Thunderbolt External SSD at $249. There was a 20% coupon that I clicked on that would be applied upon checkout.
I got $50 off and the SSD cost me $199. I have a 2023 Mac-mini so I hope it works out all right.

When I comes to external storage, the main difference between TB3 and TB4 is that TB4 doubles the PCIe data speed from 16Gbps to 32Gbps. That was to ensure you get the full data transfer speed and still be able to do video data which is guaranteed at 8 Gbps in both specs. TB3 didn't have that PCIe guarantee. However, supposedly Apple supported the 32 Gbps in their implementation of TB3. So in theory it shouldn't matter. But in practice I'm guessing that the way Apple implemented speed in TB3 vs TB4 is related to overall capabilities of whatever system it is (M1 iMac vs. M3 Pro MBP, etc.). At the end of the day, these speeds are plenty for 99% of people, even video creators or casual gamers.

One thing I found really strange is all my external SSDs are faster on writes than reads in BlackMagic speed test. Even the internal M.2 drive in my Mac mini 2014, the writes were still faster. This is strange because drive manufacturers usually market their read speeds because reads are generally faster than writes in Windows, I don’t know why it’s reversed in macOS.

Hi Craig, I'm still using a 2011 iMac.
I followed one of your video tutorials a few years ago and put a 1TB Samsung SSD drive inside a Lacie Thunderbolt case and it's been running great since then.
A few days ago I tried to upgrade to OS Sonoma using the Open Core Legacy Patcher and it didn't go too well.
I'm back using my internal drive and the External Samsung SSD isn't working properly.
I've tried fixing it using Disk Utility and Terminal but I can't erase it to install Sonoma, so I need another External drive.
If you were still using a 2011 iMac would you still use the Samsung + Lacie case setup or would you choose a different option ?
    Thanks for your help.

    • @craigneidel

I am not using my 2011 currently and therefor never tried to put on Sonoma with Legacy patcher. I would do a few searches on Google to see if anybody else ran into that issue or not and they could have some insight.

Hi Craig, you have compared many external SSDs, I am curious which one you prefer, considering speed, fan-noise, reliability, etc. Satechi (Model: ST-EU4NPM), Graugear PCIe 4.0,ORICO R40 or others?
    Thank you

    • @craigneidel

I have a few more coming soon. The Acacias works well and most do. The issue is that I do product showcases because I'm only one person and can only review my experience. Since I have so many too I tend to use a bunch but maybe not to their limits. I think it comes down to if you want to build one with the SSD and enclosure which might be best but is more work vs. buying a pre-built one. But to be honest I have not had many issues with any of them yet including the Graugear, Minisopuru, Orico, Satechi, and others. I think the cooling and the drive you put in is more important than the enclosure. I would review the Amazon reviews to get a very wide scope and make your decision.

  • @tomsun3159
    @tomsun3159 4 місяці тому +1

As Orico does not build SSDs what brand is inside?
In my Anyoyo TB enclosure fanless i have a Samsung 990 Pro 2TB (quite a waste i only used it i had it just on hand) on my MBA M1 it is slightly faster than the build in storage. I think 3100 MB/s is end of the line as a certain part of the TB bandwidth is reserved for different tasks. I still want to test against a NVME3 2 TB SSD i assume there will ben no/no big difference in speed. Important is the drive you use has a real DDR-RAM Cache and not a Cacheless drive or simulated SLC Cache. DDR-RAM does not degrade NANDs do. degrade

The read speed is even worse than WD Black SN770. I don't like the fan and the LED light. Overall, the write performance is only slightly better (approx. 300 MB/s). The overall price is significantly higher than the well-known combination of SN 770 + Acasys Enclosure
