    Two things about this video. First when you are comparing a T9 with an internal drive, you are comparing apples with oranges. Yes an internal drive is a lot faster, but you don't move internal drives between computers. Every computer that I know of that you can plug an external drive into, also has an internal drive. Second that 180gb cache is only on the 4tb drive. The 2Tb drive cache is more like 50gb. I use external drives to transfer files between computers, I do not have a network. How many people really need or want a 4tb external drive. Some I am sure, but very few.

      thanks for heads up about cache in lower capacities ...must be even lower on 1 TB

    • @MarkDalbey-cv9sb
      @MarkDalbey-cv9sb 9 місяців тому

      I don't know, but I assume that it is. If I were to buy another external SSD it would probably be a 1tb one. I really don't need a 4tb one. I assume that I am not all that special and assume that most people will be buying 1 or 2tb T9s which the lower cache will be what they have. like I would be. For me I don't see myself needing a 2tb SSD, but if the price settles close to a 1tb one. I will look at it. 4tb while they will probably get cheaper, won't be getting that cheap.@@DarkPhychic

      External SSD better to be cheaper than Internal SSD, Samsung actually can make it cheaper but they're not doing it

      Can you explain what cache does in a SSD? And van it be cleared?

    • @MarkDalbey-cv9sb
      @MarkDalbey-cv9sb 5 місяців тому

      @@robm6936 SLC cache. The dram on an SSD is comparatively slow. The SLC cache takes in data at high speed and then later, hopefully when there is no data being written to the SSD it writes the data to dram. For example if you go back to the P660 once more data was written to the SSD than the size of the SLC cache, the speed slowed down to slower than a hard drive. This was not a problem for most users, but if you were writing huge files like video files to the SSD it could be a problem. I do not know if you can clear the SLC cache, or why you would want to.

    It'd be interesting if you tested SSD M2 enclosures that offer Thunderbolt/USB 4 connection. They are priced around $100-150. They may easily be used with cheaper SSDs that offer up to 3000 MB/s and fully utilize the speed.

      Can you please recommend an [durable] enclosure/drive combo that can achieve over 3000mb/s speeds?

    • @IamShopping
      @IamShopping 9 місяців тому +1

      @@mgelinfilms7344 Properly speaking, on practice ~3,000 MB/s is a limit of the "weak link"-in our case it's USB 4 or Thunderbolt 4 port. They both are specced at 40Gb/s and in the real world it means ~3,000 MB/s. If you need a higher speed, the best option is to use a cable to connect directly to PCIe 4 or NVMe (PCIe 4 x4) port on a motherboard and have it stick out for connecting an external SSD. I've never tried it myself but theoretically you may achieve this way up to 7,000 MB/s in case your motherboard supports it.
      Nevertheless, here is my POV on what's the most interesting option nowadays as to the fastest enclosure/ssd combo. Let's start with the main prerequisite: the enclosure's chip must support both USB 4 and Thunderbolt 4 specs to be able to provide the speed for both host options. Otherwise, it will work only with one of them at maximum speed and will be really slow for another. Unfortunately, many enclosures on the market support whether USB 3.1/3.2 Gen 2 or Thunderbolt 3. That means ~1,000 MB/s with the former, and ~2,800 MB/s maximum speed with the latter. Often these are not complimentary options for one enclosure to support both. So, it's important to plan what protocol an enclosure and computer would use for communication. They must be similar on both ends for USB 3.2 Gen 2 and Thunderbolt 3 gadgets to have a maximum data speed.
      USB 4 and Thunderbolt 4 ones are very new. Right now, there is only one reliable brand's enclosure that I know that supports both protocols version 4: OWC Express 1M2. It's new and you may buy it via OWC web-site. It costs $119 and uses Taiwanese ASMedia ASM2464PD chip that is certified for USB 4 and is pending Thunderbolt 4 certification. Basically, it supports both. OWC lists 3,151 MB/s maximum speed for this enclosure for both USB 4 and Thunderbolt 4. Though if the enclosure is connected to a computer's USB 3.1/3.2 Gen 2 or Thunderbolt 3 ports, OWC lists 990MB/s as maximum speed for both protocols. I.e. it doesn't utilize Thunderbolt 3 to max speed and drops to USB 3.2 Gen 2 on a computer's Thunderbolt 3 port. So, if your computer doesn't have USB 4 or Thunderbolt 4 but has Thunderbolt 3, maybe it's better to use an enclosure that supports Thunderbolt 3 and achieve ~2,800 MB/s real-world speed-there are a lot of them on the market (like OWC Envoy Pro SX that supports 2847 MB/s via Thunderbolt 3 and costs $130 )-or any USB 3.2 Gen 2 enclosure in case a computer doesn't even have Thunderbolt 3.
      As to SSD, I think it's worth using a 4TB one with up to 5,000 MB/s speed. I think Crucial P3 Plus 4TB SSD is a decent choice priced at ~$210 now. It's possible to find cheaper options and save around $20-30 but it's worth checking reviews for the drives-maybe they are not the most reliable ones.
      So, basically for around $300-330 you may get the best possible real-world speed for an external SSD storage of up to 3,151 MB/s per OWC own specs. Nowadays, it's physically impossible to go faster using a computer's conventional external ports: it's limitation of USB/Thunderbolt protocols, not enclosures or SSDs per se.

    Good info on the T9 but comparing it to internal SSD was really pointless…. It would have been better if you compared it to other external SSDs from other brands.

  • @kaede15

    I always prefer a good external enclosure than a full on external drive.
    So a good TB4 40gb drive enclosure costs around $120
    A 4TB nvme costs between $180 to $277 depending on pice gen3 or 4.
    TeamGroup offers 4TB gen3 TLC at $174 adding both they ended up costing the same but the TB4 enclosure is waaay faster.
    PLUS if someday you need a NAS or cache for your PC, you can always dismatle the drive and upgrade it to another drive.

    Macs does not support USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 20GBps
    Macs only support USB3.2 Gen2 10GBps and Thunderbolt3 4/USB4 40Gbps
    .. So on a mac its going to go down to 10GBps (around 1000 MBps) .
    Best just to build NVME enclosures. I have 10GBps and 40GBps and they work great and cheap.

    Samsung t5 evo the standard speeds of ssd with 400 to 500mbps but woth the highest capacity of 8tb but dont have water resistant at least.

    Hi Tech Notice, I'm only after subscribing a day or 2 ago and glad to see this video.
    Previously I was considering getting this T9 purpose-built USB-C or Crucial X10 Pro. Lately, I was told that it's always best to make your own custom drive and place it into a USB-C enclosure because there are much larger and faster buffer sizes with custom-made SSDs. So that led me to consider using the Acasis TBU 405 Pro enclosure with the Lexar NM790 which you highly praised as beating the Samsung 990 Pro m.2 NVMe. So what are your thoughts... T9 / X10 Pro or something custom-built?
    This is what I was told in my latest research:
    "The big difference from one drive to the next is the size of the buffer and the speed of the underlying NAND flash memory that is ultimately used to store the data. Cheaper drives will have smaller buffers and slower NAND. The cheapest drives might have a tiny buffer (or none) and slow NAND, while the most expensive solutions might have a huge buffer and fast NAND.
    For most any non-bargain basement NVMe drive, it's likely to perform better than many of the purpose-built USB-C drives."

    Great vid! The main reason for my want of the T9 over T7 is due to a larger cache for bigger files, However, I want the 2Tb and not the 4Tb and have seen that the cache is still the same as T7 so no real point? also is this true, I cannot find anywhere or am smart enough to know/understand tests haha

    @tech notice very informative review - especially for Mac users - would the speeds that Samsung claim be achievable if this T9 drive were to be plugged into a Thunderbolt 4 port on an Intel NUC 13 Pro running Windows 11? It's marginally cheaper to buy than building a thunderbolt 4 nvme enclosure with a 2TB Gen 4 SSD here in Australia (A$370 vs A$430)
