    IMO Slider has some problems, but the key diffrence is with a good slider at worst you die before the special, in a top level enviornement the splashdown almost always dies before it does anything. At the very worst slider can draw some attention and move you. Slider is also much easier to buff while Splashdown is near impossible to fix due to how its designed. This is pre video release so curious to see if this lines up.

    Okay, but imagine if you could activate Reefslide as a jump begins, rocketing off on your ink power shark through the sky at insane speed, skidding as you make touchdown and BOOM! It would be AWESOME!

    Drop roller effect on the end of reef slider would be an interesting way to end without buffing anything else about it. But adding the bomb neutralizing effect that splashdown had and booyah bomb still has seems like an obvious necessity at the very least.

    Very good comparison! You made a great point that there's hope for being able to buff Reefslider over Splashdown seeing as it's not one factor that tips the scales from overpowered to trash. Definitely manifesting buffs for the next update.

    My way of making Reefslider better would be that during the startup time, holding a directional input would allow you to curve the path and you would be launched forward after the special ends, so you're in motion during your end lag. This would be in addition the buffs mentioned in the video.

    asides from that all i can really say is as a former splat roller main in splatoon 2 splashdown was a depressing special for me to use. I always died a little inside when my splashdown gets invalidated by the enemy moving their crosshair upwards. As for reefslider i cant really talk about it as i never used it yet, but it seems like a special that has a bit of utility and could be used in some interesting ways. Nice vid!

    a good buff for reefslider would be to be able the control how the rails are laid out so you can just very slightly control the direction you go to

    In my opinion, there is three pros for splashdown that you forgot to mention.
    1. If splashdown was cancelled, you only lose a little bit of your special gauge, making you be able to respawn them paint a little bit, then directly super jump splashdown
    2. Splashdown was extremely cheap for most weapons. For example, ink brush needs 150p, clear dapples needs 160p, even the most points required is 190p (dark tetra or Kensa machine)!
    3. When I was like A rank in splatoon 2, I still didn’t see a lot of splashdown cancels, roughly 70% splashdowns still success to land. I only get splashdown cancelled a lot after going to S or S+. Just wanna mention that how good a special isnt just determined by high level gameplay.

    As much as reefslider is the better designed special. Theres one weapon that imo thrived off splashdown and was great with it. Being the sploosh. It was able to combo off splashdown so well and if you ran all swim speed it was. Really easy to swim up to someone and hit em with a quick time event before they could react and kill you. The ammount of kills i cheesed on people by hitting them once or twice and then swimming beind them and splashdowning them was really high. Plus being able to regain your ink so quickly was perfect for it as the sploosh likes to go IN Was it competitively good? Hell no. But was it insanely fun? YES

      I think tetras and goo tuber were the best or it. Tetras because after the fourth roll you could splashdown when the enemy wasted there shots and stop the lag. I mailed gootuber on tower and it was amazing, you could hop off tower jump to a teammate and clear the area, it was a diet big bubbler. Also splashdown on chargers would have been great for close range.

      I'd argue Sploosh was the single worst Splashdown user. Most other guns had an instant ranged combo that increased the lethality of the special, either with the main or the sub, and even Undercover that kinda didn't could still be oppressive since it had a fresh shield against a chipped opponent. Sploosh with Splashdown could only toss itself at the opponent while nothing stopped said opponent from running away or gunning the Sploosh down once the i-frames ran out.

      Swim speed is good but with the few times I used it, run speed is more comfortable imo

    What would be cool, is that you can use Reef Slifer mid super jump and instead it worked like a missile, basically, you activate it, then when you're about to land and it makes contact with the floor, it blows up, serving like a type of anti-camping and ink your spot

    agree a lot with the video,
    I think it needs to be pointed out that even tho reef is better overall, some weapons have more synergy with SD, specially duo to reef being more punisheable,
    mainly tetras and splatroller,
    tetras gains a lot of value from it for being able to recharge rolls and make nearby players weak, and since you can use your last 1 or 2 rolls to space out before SD'ing it was a lot safer to do and unexpected too since as a tetras you are already messing up with ppls aim,
    as for splat roller, it has a super agressive playstyle, yet it's main weakness is getting stuck in ink so having a panick button that eats bombs goes along with it really well, and the value it gets from actually landing it is good too, makes everyone around weak, gives you some turf to swim and act right after, and also refill your tank for another curling to either keep pushing or retreat,
    we are lucky they didnt give roller reef slider, but instead bubbler that also functions as a panich button

    Reefslider gives you more opportunities to not get cancel, your travel is mainly invincible, and you can end your ride early. Still the worse special in the game by far, but not as bad as splashdown
    But I don’t have much experience with reefslider so take my opinion with a grain of salt

      I think Zipcaster is also fairly bad so Reefslider isn’t the “worst in the game by far” (still isn’t very good)

    One thing about Splasdown that you forgot is that Splashdown got reduced special depletion if cancelled, and prior to that buff got just normal depletion as if you didn't use it at all because during the special the gauge only went down with you. Reefslider's gauge starts depleting as soon as you pop it, so you get 60-70% gone if you panic use it and 100% if you get punished after the blast. Combined with generally lower costs Splashdown was closer to a second sub than to a special, which did increase its utility, whereas Reefslider's costs put it in a spot where it would need more power to compete with other specials.
    Splashdown also lost a lot of power in lategame's longer-ranged meta. Using it against shorter-ranged guns could often rise you out of the opponents' range, forcing a retreat which bought you some space to work with. Not even talking about short-ranged guns like Jr that can't reach it at all, 2-liners like Splattershot and Zap had to be well within the lethal radius to cancel it. This was especially useful against Brellas, it nuked their shields from any range while they couldn't really do much in return.
    But Slider is still fundamentally a better special, because it lacks Splashdown's main issue- it isn't locked in. Even if Splashdown was uncancellable it would be bad, because it just doesn't have the reach, its sphere of influence ends maybe three lines away from the frontline. Slider can break through, it is currently terrible at it but it fundamentally has the capability to force itself in, giving it potentil to be a functional special someday.

      I actually didn't forget, that was in the original script. I just ended up scrapping it to make the video a little shorter but everything you said is true. I'm not sure if they'll buff that aspect of Reefslider though.

    One thing I would like with reef slider is that we can just slide in the air. The amount of times I activated this thing in the air and immediately slammed into a wall

    I actually really enjoyed splashdown, and I miss it a lot cause I had a good amount of success personally
    Reef sliders negatives are hard but I think it’s the end lag that’s the biggest offense. Remove the end lag and I think it’ll be a good enough successor to splashdown

      Splashdown was a menace in anything lower than competitive splatoon, especially with the buffs of it destroying bombs and using it in super jump for a faster one

    You forgot a weakness of reefslider that splashdown never had to deal with, the squid roll. At full HP, a perfectly timed squid roll would parry the explosion, leaving them at low HP, but alive. If reefslider had little end lag, this wouldn’t be the worst issue as they could finish the job off easily, but by design, reefslider has a decent about of end lag completely vulnerable. A lot of weapons have enough DPS where they can parry the explosion and then splat the reefslider user. This however isn’t the biggest weakness though, as if someone is caught off guard, they won’t have time to react, and even then, the timing is somewhat tight

    I don’t understand why you can’t jump with the reefslider it looks like a shark and in real life sharks can jump specifically great whites. So if they make it where you can jump with it and explode as you land that would be a great mix of reefslider and splashdown.

    About that part with the flying splashdown. You can activate splash down even before your character started jumping and this would remove the special charge indicator at the top of the screen. Therefore they would be bo way for them to know until the splash down rings appeared.

    I feel like this is because of Dapple Nouveau but also yeah this makes sense
    Pre-video answer I have to say Reefslider is better but it’s very close both special are the get me killed Specials in the game currently(because reef could get buffed) awful kill radius, easily punishable, no competitive use

    One point of contention not talked about is points for special. Splashdown weps always had really low points for special, resulting in a low impact but relatively spammable special, which I always thought was a cool concept. But in S3 all specials are 200p, so it's kind of dumb that tetras pays 200p for a low impact special like reef while splash pays the same 200p for a high impact special like crab.

      Well, it wasn't always like that, it was just buffed towards the later half of the games life because the devs knew Splashdown was bad. If Reefslider stays bad we could see something similar.

    I think another thing to take into consideration is how much worse the servers for splatoon 3 currently are. To me, the lag very noticeably affects the performance, or lack thereof, of reefslider.

    A thing to note is spu buffs reef really well giving it a bigger radius of damage and damage up im pretty sure

      It does, but it requires a large amount of SPU to have a noticeable effect and it's often not worth running that much on the weapons that have it, unless you're going for a meme build

    I think some things that could help buff Splashdown if it were still in the game are:
    1. Make it so that holding a direction will move the player in that direction while they're preparing the splashdown
    2. Make it so that the player can activate splashdown early for reduced damage
    3. Just give it a few i-frames on startup

      That first idea would probably be best. The issue is, it can probably get you into enemy spawn permanently instead of temporarily like inkjet or zipcaster. So if that's the case, they might also need to make it so you return after execution. But it does make it so that it's still cancellable albeit much more unpredictable where to aim. (It should have a little bit of armor though imo).
      If possible I'd also rather they make it possible to use reef slider during a jump and explode in landing (with the downside of not having an ink trial because that can be a pain to deal with, having a massive trial of turf from the enemy because they jumped from spawn to spawn), that's probably my main reason I want splashdown back. So if they make reefslider do that instead I would use it much more often tbh lol.

      @@spootymaniacs I miss the super jump splashdown and I didn't ever even use it. It's just so cool.
      I think if they made it so you end up back at your initial destination with splashdown to avoid reaching enemy base too easily, this could probably be fixed by just making it so if you move the splashdown to an elevation that's significantly higher than your starting point, it'll return you to where you started, but if you use it on relatively even height, then it would end wherever you land the splashdown.
      like let's say it'll shoot you back to your starting point if you reach any location that exceeds what you could reach from a normal jump or something

    People say reefslider is a splashdown replacement. But I think it’s a baller (+Splashdown) replacement. When using baller your can move and there will be an ink trail, just like reefslider. The explosion is also very round like ballers explosion.

    While the startup and endlag are a pain and I hope they buff it, my main hope for a buff is being able to jump with the shark, so you don't get stuck on every tiny edge like you do right now. Also, that would allow for some cool plays jumping off ramps and edges. How do you like that idea Chase?

    Using Reefslider during a super jump for a landing explosion would be super cool, but that's a pretty big change in function so I'm doubtful the devs would ever add that. For something more probable, I wish they'd reduce the endlag and make it so that the explosion can go over short ledges like the one behind Flounder Heights' splat zone.

    Subs and specials just aren't created equally. Inkjet is pretty bad without precise aim and good timing and easy to counter and angle shooter exists.

    i guess since the main way to deal with reef was just to roll a bomb, i guess have a bit of the frames kill off any bombs until you’re standing then be vulnerable

    I loved being able to do a super jump and then use the splash down like a superhero landing. I really really hope they bring back Splash down in future weapons 😢

    I liked the splashdown for one reason: punishing squid jump campers. It was euphoric every time I o pulled off a splashdown and splatted anyone that was targeting my squid jump location.

    Both specials are terrible RN
    SplashDowns utility and ability to counter a huge amount of things that arent players is something id take any day over ReefSliders predictable straight line into years of endlag combo that has no range at all and gets shot down easier than SplashDown...
    I really hope ill be able to take this back on December 1st... but as for now, I seriously would Rather have SplashDown than ReefSlider...

    this is an idea I saw somewhere else in the comments as well but a drop roller type effect after a slide could be a decent idea? still the same endlag but less predictable
    either that or (a sillier idea) R to jump off while it's going, reefslider just keeps sliding to the end of its track but doesn't explode (no inkling or octoling to detonate it)
    would give it even more versatility

    I imagine jumping in with reefslider as you activate it in the air like splashdown, you do a little spin hug with the shark, then slam it onto the ground creating the explosion when you land (probably will need a bigger explosion though...)

    In brawl stars surge has a special similar to splashdown, but he is able to move with the jump slightly, if they found a way to give splashdown a feature like this it would be better. I got very high in ladder with clear dapples, ive tried reef and really hate it, it has too much start and end lag and i feel like its much easier to dodge.

    One time, I had a "perfect" timing for reefslider but, I activated it just at the end of a ledge so it had insane lag because I had to wait for it to land, so I got killed because of that

    I still firmly believe that splashdown could've been salvaged if it was given armor that protected it from the sides.
    The idea of canceling a splashdown was unironically sick as a counterplay option: someone unleashes their ultimate attack and you as the target have only a moment to either get out the way or take the shot and cancel it (a shot that was not easy if the target was right above you and caught you off guard). It's literally playing out a DBZ scenario in splatoon and it made for some of my favorite moments back in 2. But the problem at it's core is that anyone on the opposing team could take that shot, not just the one you were using splashdown against.
    You go through that montage of splashdown cancels and so many of them are chargers, splatlings and long range shooters; players who were never at any risk of getting hit and barely need to look up in order to hit the splashdown user. A player in that position doesn't need to be able to get a splashdown cancel so easily, there's no risk to them and much easier execution therefore they don't deserve the reward. If splashdown granted you protection against those players attacking from far away but left you exposed from directly below, then only the ones you intend to hit with splashdown would be able to effectively cancel it. In close quarters it's still vulnerable as it should be, but at long range where the special is worthless it's also much safer to use. (In theory with this buff they could also fine tune it a lot, changing the armor health or tweaking the size of it's hitbox to make it better or worse if needed).

    I definitely think it deserves a small buff in area damage +5 so it can combo with torpedo, and slightly bigger radius for both painting and damage. Other than that we shouldn’t touch it too much

    Experienced hot take: Splashdown was leagues better.
    Because splashdown was the special on two of my mains in Splat2, I was forced to push it beyond where the common consensus is. When paired with 12 AP of special saver it allowed you a free return to mid, thereby maintaining tempo. With quick super jump, You could jump away and then jump back to anchor to keep them alive. The cherry on top was if your team controlled the objective when you jumped/died, you passively gained special and could splashdown onto the objective. Because the opposing team was forced to rush the objective, not only would they die, the splashdown would often be the play of the game. I was able to make this strategy work fantastically, even in x rank.
    Reefslider's advantages have nothing on the impact this one effect had on a match, period.
    Side note: Reefslider has ruined my underminer brella, and I will never forgive it 🤬

    both are good, the game maker just need to give it the right buff to make the special works well. Example I frame for splash down and quicker frame rates or how reefslider paints when exploded. or some other buff feature to make it viable.

    In casual games splashdown was so lethal! I can’t remember ever getting shot out the air only my insane triple kills. I think reefslider and splashdown are both severely better in casual

    IMO I think reefslider more fun to use and fixable with how it’s designed unlike splashdown, so I think it’s better for that reason.

    I rember reef had a bunch of i frames in the world permer to where the user can move out of the way like a splat bomb

    But the real problem with reefslider is lag. I can be already moving with it, and still die, because that E liter with 200ms of latency shot at me while I wasn't moving on his screen. But it also works the other way, I can be fleeing a reefslider I saw from half a map away, and still die because the guy had a shitty connection. Most often than not, it works in the opponent favor because I play with an internet cable.
    I also want to point out that reefslider has a ton of endlag, but it happens that sometimes, you see a reefslider end, shoot at the center of the blast and miss because lag slightly changed their position.

    reefslider is the overall better special definitely, but i do kinda miss splashdown. I used to main the kensa machine in s2 and have gotten used to booyah bomb on it and don't want that to change, but splashdown was just kinda nice to have as an ink tank refill or a super jump.

    to be honest, atm its splashdown > reefslider, i feel like if they reduced start time and end time it would be sm better, i never get a chance to actually activate my special, although if i do manage to start reefslider i die at the end cause i cant move quick enough.

    reefslider needs more blast radius. people barely have to move to avoid it which leads to being punished even harder and when i play dapples i dont have any fast range option like splat bombs as torpedo cant kill

    Imagine some of the nasty Intensify action wall jump to Splash down plays you could do. That would make the special kinda good imo. Reef Slider is kinda predictable. I know Splash Down was too but intensify action jumps could also go nuts with Splash Down

    Ok but which one is worse stamp or reef slider?
    I could go either way but seeing as stamp moments still happen to me on a regular basis I’d say it’s worse off.

    If nintendo only did the player invencible SINCE THE BEGINNING OF THE ANIMATION to even 2 seconds after the splashdown it would sure have make it to splatoon 3 as an multiplayer special and not only a hero mode special 😔

    How is Ultra Stamp a near top tier ? It literally gives 30 to 90 damage more often now and that's it ☠️ Where is the protection it had on the front ? I also thought it was better but then i got in a higher rank (from s+1 to s+2) and i just die when i use it.

    I liked splashdown because it was easy to use and somewhat good in turf war but even the least skilled seen to avoid most reefsliders in this game but that might just be what I see but I would rather have splashdown. Also reefslider doesn't really work as a panic button like booyah bomb does.

    i think an interesting buff would be lowering the visibility of the lines. like, if the enemy can't see you, they can't see the lines either. that could remove a lot of the predictability, even with the atrocious startup and endlag.

    Reef slider is soooo much better like it does things and it needs buff, as some situations it seems like it should be good in it isn’t due to end lag but splashdown didn’t have good situations, and I say that as a tetra main in splatoon 2. They gave it new buffs but once I got to S I just couldn’t do anything with it. Reef slider is pretty good but should be better, splashdown was near unalusable just because everything you want to do with it you have to get through not dying so every use it has is near impossible to get use out of, while reefspider is a bit unintuitive when it will be good but still has a lot of good uses even if it nowhere near the best special

    I mean they both have the same issue. Only reason why reefslider is better is because u can get as far as using the special and maybe securing one kill with it as opposed to splashdown where u have the chance of getting killed during the special. So difference between them is reefslider you’ll die after getting the special off and splashdown you’ll die before getting ur special off

    The amount of times I died because someone threw a bomb after reef or they killed me because I couldn't move is absurd. For me Splash is better unless they fix those two things

    The reef slider is better people just don’t use it correctly. Not saying this applies to all users, but you can’t expect to live when you charge into the middle of the enemy team without backup. Of course it could still use a few buffs and fixes but I’ve only played against a few people who use it well, needless to say, they got a fair amount of kills with the reef slider alone those games.

    Imo reef has a better design but worse stats than splashdown, I don't get kills with it as often and has less interactions with height which made it interesting for me.
