After years of studying trolls, I finally decided to try it to learn more. It was the only time I've done it and I failed massively. I waited until I was super stressed, created a new character on a mmorpg, got into a channel full of trolls, and gave it a try... got responded to... and cried. I guess not everyone can be turned into a troll. ...Then again, it was a single data point. Perhaps some people need more than others? I don't know. My stress levels were DEFINITELY higher than some difficult math, though.

@@EnaTenkiyoGamer Well at least you can now check a "strict mode" holding inappropriate comments back, and make a blocked words list, so that helps quite a lot! But how to block "I'm back hehehe" that's not an insult. Just annoying comments. ;)
You know why that is it's because you are too darn awesome the bad trolls fear you because of your awesomeness me I am a good troll have a nice day and stay cool bud😎👍🏻
Based on your graphics I think you have the wrong definition of a troll. The idea was based on the fishing term where you lure a fish into taking the bait. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trolling_(fishing)
As long as you include constructive criticism in the positive category, I concur. And even when videos are just there to entertain, you don't have to watch it. Perhaps we should start teaching kids how to improve their own mood, since many don't seem to have that skill (or understand that it's an option). Then we just have the bots, psychopaths, and sadists to deal with.
Jaimes maybe we shouldn't label all trolls as psychopaths and sadists... Some of them believe it's the only way to be cool, or sometimes it might be for self reassurance, maybe they're doing something similar and they are afraid you're better then they are in which case trolling is actually a sign of respect. (People are strange things) I try to take trolls as a complement, cause I'm actually worth their time.
That kind of thinking shows a lack of empathy towards others. So, while I understand your point of view, I disagree with you. You're describing someone who only cares about themselves, and doesn't care if they hurt someone else's feelings. In short, lacking empathy.
Jaimes, you're saying that acknowledging the fact that not all trolls are psychopaths, and are sometimes confused people trying to be noticed, is lack of empathy? I respectfully disagree.
I am a 30 year old woman who continually gets attacked by 15 year olds. Here is the TOS for UA-cam. This is what you can be banned for. " Content that is deliberately posted in order to humiliate someone Content that makes hurtful and negative personal comments/videos about another person"
i personally love trolls as long as they dont cross the line, trolling is the best way to destroy seriousness. c'mon now, plz dont generalize all of them
The way i've always experienced trolls, the defninition is close to just getting a rise out of people. For instance taking a unpopular stance that you don't believe in the slightest, then loudly proclaiming such where you are almost certain to get many responses is a form of trolling. Sometimes a person making only one, or two comments set's off a huge argument even long after they've stopped commenting. Generally speaking i feel like people way overthink the whole trolling thing. It used to be common sense on the internet to NOT feed the trolls. Attention is what they want, if they don't get it they will go elsewhere. I suppose i've always had a issue with online bullying, outside of very specific cases (like creating new accounts to harass someone after they've blocked you) it's easily preventable. It's one of the aspects of the net I like best. If i don't want to talk to someone, i don't have to, and they can't even make me hear them if i wish otherwise. When you decouple people from consequences it's always going to bring out the bad in some, but the anonymity of the net has benifet's as well, and imo they outweigh the bad.
You say a good point about one simple post, and how trolls and bullies gang up even though the original poster has not answered. It is funny in a way as they just look ridiculous. I remember contacting a local community group discussing local stuff and when I asked about say a group that the community group had no interest in, they would make fun of me. Say for example you wanted to know about the local Mormon group or road safety group, you would be virtually written off for asking about where that local group is and called names etc, but if you asked about where the local restaurant is then they would not gang up at all. You are kind of bullied into only talking about restaurants in a local community group, rather than other things that happen locally. I remember my post got deleted as my post about asking where something is that is not a restaurant.
Calling people who dissent to something 'trolls' when they aren't actually just being contrarians to annoy people is a form of 'bullying' and its worse because it happens from the top down so there is no burden of proof for them to show that the censorship was necessary.
This looks like a good general science series. Although aimed at teens, very few adults will know this stuff. I'm adding it to our Santa Monica Bay Audubon Society blogsite on a regular basis as suitable for all ages.
Rocky Cliff thank you for watching and sharing!! Ultimately, we just want to help more people out there think critically about the information they are seeing about controversial topics!
I've never got a kick out of annoying people, that just seems like a bizzare thing to do to me. I guess people can seek out negative comments and get caught up in the drama of it all though or for some kind of self destruction.
This makes sense. As far as trolling, I've tried to limit my trolling comments to what I know is true. However, I have found out that there are people who are actually paid to comment in a trolling fashion. And there are times I trolled a perceived troll with this comment: "How much were you paid to troll?" I haven't had one protest, yet, and maybe I alerted a person or 2 to this practice and maybe encouraged them to take trolling with a grain of salt. And maybe I caused a troll or 2 to stop.
Seen lots of anecdotal evidence of this playing League. Once one person starts flaming in chat, there's a pretty high chance at least one other person retorts back or starts a war.
As a self proclaimed master troll I can tell you that the best trolling is when the troller trolls without the trollie knowing that they're being trolled. Then the troller has an inside joke he or she can laugh to themselves about guilt free :) But... you can't make it simple, you need to leave a hint that the troller is trolling or has trolled the trollie. That way there's the chance that they'll be discovered, and a greater thrill in the victory of successfully trolling without anyone realizing it.
omegahunter9 In the end its just exposing the stupidity and hubris of certain people. I have much pleasure reading replies to troll comments. These people really love masturbating at the thought of "moral superiority". Just the thought tho. Because all the talk is worth nothing without action. Id rather see a timid, quiet person give a burger to a homeless dude than read SJWs talking shit about capitalism and how people are all greedy fucks.
Trolling is definitely an interesting topic to learn about. Most people in forums react wrong to troll attacks and get “trolled”. Thanks for this interesting stuff.
Nice video on a really hot topic on the net. Makes it a bit easier to understand, why some people troll - although I absolutely don't like this kind of destructivity. Cheers Bro! :-)
Bad moods and angry behavior is catching, but so is being kind. Even in a bad mood if you force yourself to be kind or smile you will notice that you receive more smiles and kindness. It will change your mood, and your mood may help someone else as well.
You constantly mix up your definition of trolling. You say they are just saying things to get reactions, have fun, get laughs, etc. But then you use examples like "you suck", etc. While I'm sure some of those people who say "you suck" might be trying to get a reaction, a large percent of them are legitimately angry, and not pretending or trying to get reactions. Those people aren't trolls, they are legitimately angry people. They aren't trolls, they are just aholes.
True, but they're not just angry - the fact that they went on a public forum to vent their anger in a crude and hurtful manner that in way that isn't constructive, helpful or conveys what the actual problem is shows that they are not trying to just add their voice to make their opinions heard - they just want to hurt the person that annoyed them. People should be better than this.
I stand with anyone who has ever been bullied by trolls and cyber bullies. Know that you are not alone and that you are loved. Trolls are horrible and can push people to suicide. There should be a law against such devils. It is NOT ACCEPTABLE!
I went through a phase where I tried trolling out... didn't last long because honest to goodness full-time trolls are a pretty messed up bunch. 4chan and gamingforce forums back in the day. Now I've got better things to do anyway. Had way too much time on my hands as a teenager.
For me, trolling is when you unnecessarily use a nasty or sardonic tone, rather than respectfully disagreeing or even pointing out that someone has contradicted themselves. I remember getting into an argument with someone about a silly comment I made. Ultimately, he/she successfully pointed out the holes in my comment. But their tone was always so nasty it really stuck out as an unpleasant exchange. So now, even when I profusely disagree with someone, I am always respectful and tolerant. If they fail to show me the same, I bail.
TOTALLY AGREE 💯 I commented on a nurses channel like two days ago. Bear in mind, I have no need to lie or even exaggerate. I'm always respectful & sweet. I rarely disagree unless it's a topic I'm extremely passionate about, I know 100% what I'm talking about and they're way out in left field. But I remain nice and respectful. And the comment I made was on topic, logical, added depth to the conversation and I was totally accurate about my facts. I was mainly agreeing. So this other(3rd party) women jumps in & directs her comment to me and I'm not sure if she even understood what I and this nurse were talking about, but she proceeded and I quote, "You seem to be off your meds dear." "Get help." Wt-heck I've read every word I said twice over and can't for the life of me figure out where & what in my comments would lead her to that conclusion. I've worked in the medical field for 46 years and not the physc ward or anything to do with mental health. I was basically agreeing and adding to what the nurse was saying. I could maybe see why the 3rd party who jumped in but saying something off the wall like that??? She's basically calling me crazy and that I need help. Yea that hurt but I always tell myself before I even look at comments that none of these people know me and if their words are unkind they'll be treated like water on a ducks back. I should start writing her name down bcz I've seen those exact words before directed at other people. Maybe she just needs to be reported. She's really not worth the effort. WOULDNT YOU CALL HER A TROLL?
Good for you! Me too! They're not worth our time or attention. Like water off a ducks back. Shake it off and move on. I give your comment and attitude a 👍
If I'm in a bad mood, I'm not going to want to watch what I usually watch. I watch cute animal videos and funny videos to boost my mood. Lashing out at others would just make me feel worse.
Well, it's important to note that people are not trolls, people engage in the act or lifestyle of trolling. There's also tremendous potential for confirmation bias when looking at trolling - not every comment that looks like a troll is a troll, and since we don't see people's posting history we don't know if this is their typical behavior or if it's a one-off, context specific or otherwise explained.
I wonder what the "naturally trolly" used as an outlet before internet comments were available. Letters to the editor? Are they just what we used to call "a crank"? Very enjoyable video, by the way. Now a subscriber. :)
1:13 "...to the point that some news websites have removed their comments sections altogether." Let's be real, news sites removed comment sections because people call them on their bullshit. Think about what Robert Crichton's anecdote on this.
During puberty I was corner trapping in COD...🤦♂️ I do believe upholding comment sections in news articles is just against freedom of speech. There should already be cleverly made filters that disrupt hate speech but also allow for a diverse group of comments to be brought up in opposition, support, and moderators for live feeds. Especially today with media outlets knowing more about manipulating humans than we know of ourselves.
The problem with this is that the filters that have been created are often compromised in the name of political and/or financial agendas as well as bias beliefs. The owners always hold the key. Sadly the result of all this will ultimately be an internet without privacy...wait....we're already there. How long until everyone has enough, decides the internet is nothing more than complete shit pretty much and start going back to older ways? The speed at which useful technologies grow is much slower than the rate of which our stressfully complicated lives get more stressful and more taxing. In the end the greed of the tech companies milking the F*** out of their R&D will be what does them in. They ensure the slowest release of good tech by releasing all the shit in between that many consumers can't afford to buy new every year or two. To give you an example I built a gaming PC about a year ago and put about $4-5k into it. I had been out of gaming for awhile and wanted to get back into it. I research everything extensively. It's so much harder to find useful info anymore though but that's besides the point. I built this over a year ago and have one of the best graphics cards IMO (Radeon VII) and this whole time I've had yet to find a good monitor that can match the rest of my hardware. WTF?!?! I just finally ended up going with an LG OLED as the TVs tech is progressing more quickly than the gaming monitors are. How messed up is that? By the time I get a decent monitor my whole setup is obsolete already. Consumer protection needs to step up their game and ban them from releasing shit that doesn't have the other matching tech ready to go. At least maybe it would force them to release matching products instead of consumers playing catch-up 24/7. Think about the pollution too and how long until they run out of natural resources to even make electronics. Long lasting electronics need to become top priority or eventually we'll literally get tossed back into the stone age.
@@JC-ic8uh I couldn't agree more. The political spectrum is pushed for one agenda or another and media outlets show it. Corporations keep useful guides from easily accessible web pages and usually hidden. There's seems to be a monopoly on most products like phones or consoles. And you can't even replace your phone battery's lol. The presidential choices are limited AF and both in senile age while I know better candidates within my neighborhood. How f***** is it that all our congressmen are previously millionaires? Nowadays it seems there's allot more agendas than just the party's, or maybe it's all related?
Ok, I get all that. However, I do see such mean spirited comments on some un-deserving story lines, that it makes me wonder if people who partake in trolling behavior aren't making themselves worse with each downvote. Like slowly sealing their own fate. Each time they downvote or attempt to hurt others their commitment to being ugly becomes slightly more ensconced within themselves. Like trolling is actually who they become. So is it something they are unable to control? Is this how they lead their lives away from the computer? Do these people have the power to recover themselves? Is this analogous to the lead pipe syndrome of Roman times? I mean it is pretty pervasive.
"So much so that some news outlets have removed the comment sections from their websites all together." Yeah, trolling is totally the reason why they do that. Riiiiiight.
Its not like some people just dont know how to handle critics and stupid comments and are upset because not everyone agree with them. NO, its because TROLLS.
Usually if I want to comment, I try to find something good to say. But sometimes people misread my meaning and think I'm being rude. So, sometimes a comment that looks like a troll, is just a person who isn't getting their meaning across the right way.
Minor correction, if you look through the sources(second source, datasociety in this case), women and men are targeted pretty much equally, though in the subcategories it is apparent that men are targeted more often with insults, humiliation tactics and physical threats, while women are more often targeted by sexual harassment and false rumors. However it seems to have a greater impact on women. At the same time they seem to be more likely to get help, especially from companies/hotlines, though I couldn't quite tell from the data if men were just much less likely to ask for help from these sources. LGBTQ members are definitely harrased more, which is sadly unsurprising.
MrAddex thanks for watching and digging into the data. Really disturbing trends either way, but good to note that men are by no means immune from attacks from trolls. Some commenters seemed to miss the difference between arguing or disagreeing with someone and making them the targets for harassment
Trolling is not synonymous with being mean online. I counter negative comments with positivity. I do this because negative commenters can't handle being opposed, and there lies the fun of winding someone up online.
Trolls come in different shapes and sizes. Some 'trolls' just blurt out a string of upper case rants and cut-and-pastes. Other trolls call people names who disagree. But there are many so-called 'trolls' who are just pointing out something that people don't like to hear or refuse to acknowledge. Often 'troll' is just a term that people like to broadly use for those who disagree with approved messaging. While some trolls might be rude or argumentative, I'll take trolls as a whole any day over liars and censorious types.
There may be a fact or an opinion in some troll's comments, but we were specifically looking at research around those mean-spirited comments designed to draw attention and stir up controversy. As we tried to point out in the video, there is a respectful way of expressing your disagreement -- and the whole nature of being a troll is to not care about respect.
"Mean-spirited comments designed to draw attention..." and "internet trolls" are not the same at all. The argument of this video is mixed up between the two, which is a shame since I subscribed to this channel thinking it was for facts without bias.
I gave you a thumbs up for taking the time to differentiate between trolls and assholes. It's a low bar, but this is the first time I've seen someone from outside the trolling community pass it. "Maybe there's a little troll in all of us." Well, yes. Once you understand what trolling actually is then that becomes exceedingly obvious. The mainstream media interpretation of trolling has confused almost everyone... Which we're totally fine with. :D Anyway, have a good one. P.S.: Your fly was down during that whole video.
Haha! You got me! But yeah, I think it's possible to accept the inner troll that lives inside all of us AND still try hard not to be a**holes. It's all about balance, man.
What if you just completely disagree or find flaws in the video you are commenting on? What if the video is intentionally misleading? Genuine criticism can sometimes be interpreted as trolling. This is where the line gets fuzzy.
Agreed. If you look more deeply into what we say in the video, the research around trolling is specifically around certain kinds of online behavior: flaming, gaslighting, insulting people about their physical or cultural characteristics, threatening their safety, etc. It is NOT about respectful criticism of their ideas or disagreement. We agree that it's important to be really specific and accurate about what you call trolling!
When I encounter a troll, most of the time, all I have to do is to talk to the troll and tell him something like: "OK little troll, o you poor little troll. Go home little troll, since in here, you will no longer be fed." And most of the time, I think they do just that.
No one seems to accept the fact that there are people who really disagree, or kids, or just that an opinion puts light through one perspective, so anyone can switch depending on a chaotic chain of factors called life, or catharsis. It's like predicting meteorologic changes, you can't. However, I guess we can find patterns.
The big aspect I didn't see mentioned is if the person being trolled is somehow bad or did something wrong in the eyes of the person doing the trolling
Tell me more how mass censorship is okay because somebody might get upset. The average person calls anybody that disagrees with them a troll, people are narcissistic enough to think that nobody could possibly disagree and therefore anyone in opposition is a 'troll'. No, this is suddenly an issue because the mainstream narratives on almost everything have been falling apart.
trolling exist on the internet due to the lack of accountability for what one types . People are realizing they can say whatever they want under the veil of anonymity .
There's another type of Trolling that's more aimed at humor than harm: posting an insipid or nonsensical message to try to elicit some sort of response from strangers. Maybe the responder will be open to ridicule (most often for being pedantic) but the intention is mostly to have a bit of fun thru social engineering.
i think some of the humor here doesn't exactly work (but some is great, SCIENCE!) otherwise pretty good job. i like that you don't just end up in using the usual jargon/lingo and explain those too. also big kudos for providing the references as links!
Why people thinks every troll has to be mean? I guess i'm a troll but i don't like to hurt people, i'd rather get people to feel good, that's what i enjoy. Making people feel good.
I only came here because this video was featured on an article about comment sections on most media sites being closed off due to trolling/bullying. Which I totally disagree with. You've got to take the bad with the good sometimes. I sometimes troll, mainly to be funny or yeah just to get a rise from someone. I'm not in a bad mood, it's just an outlet for more controversial or unpopular opinion really or yeah, just to behave in the way we all want to sometimes towards certain people or ideas in RL. I don't personally take attacks from trolls to heart. They don't know me or my life story therefore their opinions and criticisms of me don't mean anything. You can't really form an opinion on someone's character as a whole based on a few comments or an opinion so logically, negative comments aimed towards your character don't really hold much weight. The trouble I see by removing comment sections though is (especially main stream media sites) 1. It removes any legitimate debate of criticism of the subject or information provided so misinformation can't be questioned. The media is certainly not the be all, end all or holy grail of truth and information. 2. The media likes to AstroTurf making it sound as if a certain movement or opinion is the general consensus of public opinion. Comment sections provide a better idea of what the general consensus really is. I usually look to the comment section for what people really think. Take the BLM movement for example. You'll find a lot of people don't agree with certain aspects of it, black or white. But the media will have you think a large portion of society supports all that encompasses it when in reality it couldn't be further from the truth. But I guess logic should ensue when it comes to these matters. 3. With no outlet to view an form opinions we are subjected to only one which takes away diversity and our ability to apply logic and reason. And who makes the rules on these opinions anyone? Also having no outlet will drive people to other sites that are echo chambers and biased to an extreme. Anyway, I know it's off topic a bit but that's my opinion. Trolls are welcome as long as it comical 😉
rick rolling was never a negative thing

What can I do?
@Jebbrey Bazzos These days with dynamic IPs ? Yep it suxx!
Report his comments?
@@EnaTenkiyoGamer UA-cam does nothing about it. They only care about the big creators.
@@shairaptor1865 oof
@@EnaTenkiyoGamer Well at least you can now check a "strict mode" holding inappropriate comments back, and make a blocked words list, so that helps quite a lot! But how to block "I'm back hehehe" that's not an insult. Just annoying comments. ;)
Trolling seems to be pretty mild these days.
You know why that is it's because you are too darn awesome the bad trolls fear you because of your awesomeness me I am a good troll have a nice day and stay cool bud😎👍🏻
Its because of new cyberbullying laws. Now the trolls have to be more creative and humorous.
Based on your graphics I think you have the wrong definition of a troll.
The idea was based on the fishing term where you lure a fish into taking the bait. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trolling_(fishing)
Well done! Claps*
I don't believe in trolling. I would rather comment positively or not all. I realize that the creators are there to educate.
No. I didn't say that *you* lack empathy. I said the behavior you were describing was indicative of lacking empathy.
I am a 30 year old woman who continually gets attacked by 15 year olds. Here is the TOS for UA-cam. This is what you can be banned for. " Content that is deliberately posted in order to humiliate someone
Content that makes hurtful and negative personal comments/videos about another person"
@Eric M , Okay, what are you making us?
i personally love trolls as long as they dont cross the line, trolling is the best way to destroy seriousness. c'mon now, plz dont generalize all of them
I've frequently thought that the Internet has more psychopathy & sadism than irl
Yes, we are primarily trying to engage a high school audience (via their teachers) but we also hope that we are informative for a wide, general audience. Ultimately, we just want to help more people out there think critically about the information they are seeing about controversial topics!
Remember THE STREISAND EFFECT:
The more you tell them not to troll, THE MORE
THEY WILL.
I've never got a kick out of annoying people, that just seems like a bizzare thing to do to me. I guess people can seek out negative comments and get caught up in the drama of it all though or for some kind of self destruction.
You didnt habe the right mindset. I can coach you
Lol those examples were relatively extremely tame. Physics girl has some horrible and upsetting trolls which is sad because her videos are AMAZING.
This makes sense.
As far as trolling, I've tried to limit my trolling comments to what I know is true. However, I have found out that there are people who are actually paid to comment in a trolling fashion. And there are times I trolled a perceived troll with this comment: "How much were you paid to troll?"
I haven't had one protest, yet, and maybe I alerted a person or 2 to this practice and maybe encouraged them to take trolling with a grain of salt. And maybe I caused a troll or 2 to stop.
Seen lots of anecdotal evidence of this playing League. Once one person starts flaming in chat, there's a pretty high chance at least one other person retorts back or starts a war.
The research we looked at definitely backs that up.
As a self proclaimed master troll I can tell you that the best trolling is when the troller trolls without the trollie knowing that they're being trolled. Then the troller has an inside joke he or she can laugh to themselves about guilt free :)
But... you can't make it simple, you need to leave a hint that the troller is trolling or has trolled the trollie. That way there's the chance that they'll be discovered, and a greater thrill in the victory of successfully trolling without anyone realizing it.
That was fun to read. Good job with the wording.
omegahunter9 that's closet trolling. Have the courage to step out, bro!
TamTamPamela?
omegahunter9 It's actually spelled trollee... See, one can educate while trolling too... Hahaha...
omegahunter9 In the end its just exposing the stupidity and hubris of certain people.
ABOVE THE NOISE MORE LIKE ABOVE THE NOSE

first you put me in a good mood and now I want to write a positive comment. I feel manipulated ;). Love the channel though :)
Hehe! Thanks!!
Nice video on a really hot topic on the net. Makes it a bit easier to understand, why some people troll - although I absolutely don't like this kind of destructivity. Cheers Bro! :-)
Thanks for watching and sharing your feedback!
Nice Public Enemy shirt. : )
Thanks for noticing.
I'm a certified troll and I love it.
Bad moods and angry behavior is catching, but so is being kind. Even in a bad mood if you force yourself to be kind or smile you will notice that you receive more smiles and kindness. It will change your mood, and your mood may help someone else as well.
He likes Space Jam... bet he likes "Thor love and thunder" too.
Neat episode. Content and writing have definitely improved.
Thanks for the positive feedback! We've been working hard to improve the show, especially the graphics and animation.
I stand with anyone who has ever been bullied by trolls and cyber bullies. Know that you are not alone and that you are loved. Trolls are horrible and can push people to suicide. There should be a law against such devils. It is NOT ACCEPTABLE!
I'll be fair. I only troll Sigmund FRAUD in SciShow Psych videos.
But psychology is not a science.
ɐɯɹɐʞ ɐıuɐɯ Why? Because it doesn't confirm you personal beliefs?
U Bih
Good for you! Me too! They're not worth our time or attention. Like water off a ducks back. Shake it off and move on. I give your comment and attitude a 👍
In the past, I trolled people in retaliation for trolling me. Now, I just block or ignore them.
If I'm in a bad mood, I'm not going to want to watch what I usually watch. I watch cute animal videos and funny videos to boost my mood. Lashing out at others would just make me feel worse.
Us trolls were never born that way, we just had a rlly boring irl life
Well, it's important to note that people are not trolls, people engage in the act or lifestyle of trolling.
Troy Jennings thanks for watching and becoming a sub! Hope you like the channel and come back for new vids (every other Wednesday)!
Before the internet, they used harassing phone calls and - wait for it - poison pen letters. Yes, with a stamp and everything. Crazy.
I love this channel. That's not just for the Lololols. Great piece.
We're glad you like it. Let us know topics you might want to see us cover in the future!
I have a cyber bully, and I've had trolls in general. I just feel sorry for them.

I prefer to do my 'trolling' face to face!!!
There's more than enough idiocy in the "real world," in need of challenge!!! :-)
I love getting a troll going. Does that make me a troll too lol
Just means you found a shitty troll
1:13 "...to the point that some news websites have removed their comments sections altogether."
Let's be real, news sites removed comment sections because people call them on their bullshit. Think about what Robert Crichton's anecdote on this.
Exactly
Trolling is trying to get a reaction. People are so trigger by everything.
Like you getting triggered to this video? Riiiight
During puberty I was corner trapping in COD...🤦♂️
I do believe upholding comment sections in news articles is just against freedom of speech.
Awesome video! Very informative! Thanks!
Thank you for watching!
The definition @1:45 bothers me. Just like how you should "follow the rules of society without question"...that is stagnation.
"So much so that some news outlets have removed the comment sections from their websites all together."
Yeah, trolling is totally the reason why they do that. Riiiiiight.
If genuine criticism of their horrendous journalism is trolling, then i guess he's right
Trolls have done to online comments to what scammers & ROBO calls have done to the home phone.
Its not like some people just dont know how to handle critics and stupid comments and are upset because not everyone agree with them. NO, its because TROLLS.
Well I guess we can treat it like COVID-19, contagious if you don't social distance from Trolls, not contagious when you do, 6 feet, can't touch me💯🔥
It hasn't gotten any better.
internet trolls have feelings too
I only ever troll woke far leftists and super conservative far right. They give the best reaction
Informative video thanks. My mother's sage advice was "If you don't have something nice to say, say nothing at all".
Damn she was wise! 😊
@0blong have some grace
Appealing to civility and social norms is the argument of someone who doesn't have an argument
Stroke your epeen much?
Trolling is not synonymous with being mean online. I counter negative comments with positivity. I do this because negative commenters can't handle being opposed, and there lies the fun of winding someone up online.
Space Jam's the best movie ever...
My inter weeb is crying 😢
Trolls come in different shapes and sizes. Some 'trolls' just blurt out a string of upper case rants and cut-and-pastes. Other trolls call people names who disagree. But there are many so-called 'trolls' who are just pointing out something that people don't like to hear or refuse to acknowledge. Often 'troll' is just a term that people like to broadly use for those who disagree with approved messaging. While some trolls might be rude or argumentative, I'll take trolls as a whole any day over liars and censorious types.
Cool perspective. Thanks for sharing.
The crazy truth is most internet trolls are just people with different opinions or are using facts that people don't like .
@Harry Engel I'm a semi retired troll. Being an anti troll doesn't work lol. We actually enjoy you wasting your time. We love your reactions.
I gave you a thumbs up for taking the time to differentiate between trolls and assholes. It's a low bar, but this is the first time I've seen someone from outside the trolling community pass it.
"Maybe there's a little troll in all of us."
Well, yes. Once you understand what trolling actually is then that becomes exceedingly obvious. The mainstream media interpretation of trolling has confused almost everyone... Which we're totally fine with. :D
Anyway, have a good one.
P.S.: Your fly was down during that whole video.
Haha! You got me! But yeah, I think it's possible to accept the inner troll that lives inside all of us AND still try hard not to be a**holes. It's all about balance, man.
Came here from Physics Girl and came from Physics Girl from It's OK To Be Smart. It's a good night for finding new channels!
Problem?
@n Bernal Are you a troll?
No one seems to accept the fact that there are people who really disagree, or kids, or just that an opinion puts light through one perspective, so anyone can switch depending on a chaotic chain of factors called life, or catharsis. It's like predicting meteorologic changes, you can't. However, I guess we can find patterns.
I'm gunna troll every forum I ever find. Sorry gents, just gotta learn to deal with it
This is like saying that a few people make it worse for the rest of us...
The big aspect I didn't see mentioned is if the person being trolled is somehow bad or did something wrong in the eyes of the person doing the trolling
Thank you for your video. It taught us not to be internet trolls!
Like me, I'm A TROLL!!!!! MWAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!!! 😂
FEE FI FO THUMBB!!!!
There's another type of Trolling that's more aimed at humor than harm: posting an insipid or nonsensical message to try to elicit some sort of response from strangers. Maybe the responder will be open to ridicule (most often for being pedantic) but the intention is mostly to have a bit of fun thru social engineering.
Surely you know what I mean by that.
Came for Dianna Cowern. Stayed for the content.

i think some of the humor here doesn't exactly work (but some is great, SCIENCE!) otherwise pretty good job. i like that you don't just end up in using the usual jargon/lingo and explain those too. also big kudos for providing the references as links!
Smurfs 2 was the BEST movie of all time... did u know tat?!

It's morbin time! 👨🚒
You could blame trolls but in the current social political climate people don't want to here reasonable opposing views.
Why people thinks every troll has to be mean? I guess i'm a troll but i don't like to hurt people, i'd rather get people to feel good, that's what i enjoy. Making people feel good.
The 4chan background 😂😂
The trouble I see by removing comment sections though is (especially main stream media sites)
I love the videos, very interesting and informative... Keep up the great work!
