- Come along with Eric O. at the SMA shop as he repairs a fast idle cam actuator or some times referred to as a thermostatic fast idle solenoid on a 2001 Nissan Frontier. In this case the actuator was still work however it was leaking coolant pretty bad.

I love those early 90's and day 2000's Nissan pickups! It would sure be cool too see a video of the Timing Chain replacement, they are kind of failure prone
Nissan factory protocol for installation of these thermostats is 2 steps:
1. Never remove wax pin(pushrod) as air can be introduced into unit making part inaccurate
2. After removal of new part from retaining spring fixture, you have roughly 10 seconds to install and load wax pin(pushrod) with fast idle cam

My experiences with Nissan (owned both an '87 and a '97 Hardbody P/U) is that corroded fasteners had more tendancy to break off than break loose for me...especially the screws holding the distributor cap on.
but you can only take phillip to the bar sooo many tines before he stops making that noise lol
Those are JIS, not Phillips !!!
I guess they needed that huge spring to allow the new part to expand and shrink in the package while on the shelf. A rigid brace might break or cause the part to fail, and if it gets too loose internally it could fall apart. It might have been better to design the system to have an internal end stop that limits travel of the sensor piston. Presumably they couldn't do that because of the way the sensor and wax pellet are assembled....

Expanding wax element... Where have I heard this before??? Oh yeah! My 1984 Chrysler New Yorker with the Mitsubishi engine with the Mikuni carburetor. That Mikuni carburetor used a wax element to disengage the choke... theoretically... but it was the single point of failure. I never had to worry about a radar cop chasing me down, because with the 'destroyer smoke screen' I laid down, the cop lost sight of me every time. What a crock of the 'genuine article.' Nobody here in Deetroit had a solution for the problem; a carb rebuild could only be done by one or two shops on the west coast (read that L.A. for about $750 in today's dollars) and the Detroit solution was 'the crusher.' Thank you Chrysler; Domo Arigato Mikuni!

Use a zip tie on it next time to hold the spring up around the large bolt , had this one time and it worked like a charm

What can I say, each and every time I watch a vid from you I learned plenty. This time I learned a couple neat things.
1 - the screwdriver trick for strong springs.
2 - that I can walk and chew gum ( only in padded round rooms ).
3 - I really want a set of those screwdrivers from Mr. Dennis so i won't have search for the always illusive, always under a ton of other crap, itsy-bitsy ballpeen hammer to tap those stubborn sticky ain't coming loose easy to strip screws along with set of those nut screwdrivers
OH yeah I also learned to let my hot coffee cool a tad before lip locking my coffee cup (insert chew gum and walk test)
a cable tie in the spring to the air box mounting bolts before you took it off will ave made it easier to get back on
Eric, great educational videos as usual! On new dry gaskets, like at the throttle body, a lot of time I will do a light film coating of a white lithium grease on both sides (applied with acid brush). Next time in, the gasket is generally still manageable/useable. I do the same to a used gasket, if I do not have a replacement and it works more often than not. This, also, works for a gasket that is difficult to keep in position during an install, as the grease film hold the gasket in place.
i worked on allot of dyhatsu, those little work trucks with that same carb set up. and yes I used the screwdriver trick myself then had to make that gasket if it was too bad. great job boss 👍👍

I've known about those FIS but never replaced one, good video. I've rebuilt too many carbs over the years, those coiled linkage springs are a royal pain in the butt to replace or reinstall properly, I'm glad you didn't remove it.
Eric, the wax inside the Fast Idle Solenoid expands when cold and contracts as it gets hot and liquidifies. So the plunger is extended while cold making the engine idle fast until it comes up to temperature when the wax contracts and the plunger shortens.
That doesn't sound quite right. I was looking at the linkage in my 93 hardbody, and the space between the high idle cam and throttle lever is only closed if the plunger contracts. It would have to be pretty chilly in order for the cam to pivot upwards and contact the throttle lever. The plunger must contract to make this happen. When the engine warms, the wax expands, and the plunger extends, moving the cam off the throttle lever.
I watched a tutorial on wax motors, and they are used in a wide variety of applications, from aircraft, to appliances. The wax motors always rely on heat to extend, cold to contract.
Why? The vehicle already has an idle air control valve, an engine coolant temperature sensor, and a computer. Someone at Nissan was smoking the wacky tobbacy when they came up with this!
Maybe on your application but the ones I have run across extend with heat and cause the cam to shuttle and allow the throttle plate to close more. Slowing the RPM.

I have an 88 hardbody, owned it 14 years and every philips/flathead screw ive come across in my endeavors is now socket ready.

The best way to start the day SMA
Auto zone sells a gasket rejuvenating product that is great when you have to reuse a gasket.
As ever, a perfect video, you have developed a very nice balance of instruction and entertainment, not to mention some REAL skill Top work !
So far my Vampire pliers have worked good removing screws with stripped out heads. I got the set and am happy with them. Video every day this week...nice!
Yeah, but Vamplier missed the most important set of pliers of all! People rarely use pliers that way (tip on the screw/nut etc) as the serrations are horizontal and not vertical. However, there is one type of plier that I feel is almost always used tip first to remove problem screws/nuts etc. Any guesses as to which type I'm referring to?
They gripped what my needle nose vise grips and regular vise grips wouldn't. They grip more of the screw than vise grips do.
Exactly! That's how I feel vise grips are frequently used, tip first. Yet, no Vamplier vise grips. I won't buy their regular pliers but when they come out with the Vise grip set I'm in for sure.
The handle length & fulcrum point let you apply a lot of pressure to the screw head. I haven't had them slip yet and I use the largest pair I can. I haven't had any screws that they didn't get out but Eric I'm sure will give them a good test in the NY rust...curious to see how they work for him. GA is no comparison to NY rust but I can see him snapping the heads off with the Vampliers and leaving rusted shanks.

I'm sure this has been brought up, but there is a Japanese Standard for Phillips head fasteners that is slightly different than standard Phillips.
I work on Japanese industrial electronics and I bought a screwdriver after I found this out and have yet to cam out of the head. I don't know if this is always true, but the japanese screws have a dimple on the head.

Yo Eric O @southmainautorepairllc the throttle body mounting gasket is the big circular gasket. The one under that spacer adapter thing that goes from a big circle to 4 smaller ones, comes with the intake manifold gasket kit. I've never been able to find that gasket by itself.. loosening those bolts does loosen that gasket under that plate that we didn't see in the video, but because u didn't remove or even mess with that plate, should be absolutely fine... Lol on mine, I removed it all and then realizes I didn't have either gasket! Haha used rtv and believe it or not, I TOTALLY have a vacuum leak go figure. Stupid me hahahaha. Love ur channel man! I'm always watching!

I just saw the Actron CP9690on one of your vids. and showed that it'll test coolent temperature. I just bought one on EBAY for my 1985 Ford with OBDI. It'll be better than my Snap-on scanner which doesn't test digital readings like OBDII. I've been wanting to test things like CTS temps. and O2 readings etc. THANKS!!

MY 99 is running fast as hell. once it warms up the idle goes up and down if it is in park or neutral. if it's in gear it idles at around 1,000 RPM. I noticed mine is covered in corrosion.
I’m with you about the screws pain in the ass only thing they are not actually Phillips head they are JIS /Japanese Industry Standard and shaped slightly different to where the Phillips driver doesn’t seat perfectly risk stripping more easily, worth investing in JIS Drivers for anyone who owns a Japanese car or truck

put old fic solinoid in holder where you took the new one out eric and you have part you replaced in holder for customer to proof

Apparently that Bees wax is reliable stuff. I fly a jet that uses a similar bees wax canister inside the engine fuel control. Rolls Royce Spey engine.

That spring the actuator came with was nuts! I could tell before you even moved it that it had a ton of tension on it. Guess they didn't want that sucker moving in transit. That I'd toss in the ol' parts bin - I'd use it to mickey-mouse something in the future, and I'd save the metal housing for scrap metal to weld with ... more than likely on my own junk. :)` And I wonder why I have no room in here ...

JUST WATCHED THIS VIDEO. HAVING TROUBLE WITH HIGH IDLE. CHECKED IACV. TOOK OFF AND CLEANED. DIDN'T BENCH CHECK. NO CEL's LIVE IN LAS VEGAS. REAL HOT HERE. DID A BYPASS ON COOLANT LINES TO THROTTLE BODY. COULD THAT BE A PROBLEM IF NOT THE PROBLEM?
I was checking out your new light, I will have to wait and see. Something that I just learned is that Japan has their own standard for a Philip screw driver called JIS stands for Japanese Industrial Standard. Its a little different than our Philip head. Great video.

Phillips heads or J.I.S? They look similar, but a Phillips driver will cam out of a J.I.S. fastener pretty quickly.
