A morning at our bird feeder in Costa Rica

- My most popular birdcam video, shot with a GoPro Hero near Nuevo Arenal, Costa Rica.
Lots of comments about bread and nails. I used bread this one time only. The nails don't hurt them, and without some way of securing the food, it's gone in minutes.
Cast of characters: Collared Aracari Toucans, several kinds of woodpeckers, Oropendula, Palm Tanagers, Blue/Gray Tanagers, Baltimore Orioles, Clay-colored Thrush (the national bird of Costa Rica), Red-legged Honeycreepers, Black-Cowled Oriole, Euphonias, a few varieties of hummingbirds, and more. In the trees but not in view, parrots and a Keel-billed Toucan. Every morning is like a trip to the zoo!

If you're looking for toucans, oropendula, tanagers, woodpeckers, honeycreepers, and lots more colorful birds, you've come to the right place. This is my first and most popular bird video. Enjoy and Pura Vide from Costa Rica Bird Cam!

You’re very lucky to be able to watch such a beautiful assortment of birds.

Yes. This is our small and beautiful country... I'd seen almost the same just in my backyard!
Such an amazing variety of color and size. Best 24 min. I've seen on YT in a long time.

So are you.
Your birds eat better than I do. If I was your neighbor, you would have so much footage of me sneaking up with a fork...
😊😂
I think the neighbor-feeder is on the other side of the house.

I put this on full screen and then didn't want to take a sip of my coffee for fear of scaring away the birds, made me laugh when I realized what I was doing. Thank you for the morning entertainment!
Glad you enjoyed it!
All the colors that fly into the picture is incredible. I literally feel my stress melting away watching this.
Me too
This really is a stress melter!
Very few things in life make me as happy as seeing animals have a good time. Thank you so much for uploading this!
awwts that is so sweet of you..wishing you a lovely new year..

birds should be eating insects
@@carkod Many birds enjoy a varied diet including fruit, fish, insects and/or even small mammals. Toucan's mostly subsist off fruit, thrush play a vital role in disseminating many plant species, and the black-cowled oriole even drinks nectar. You are right that it's not good for _some_ birds to eat _some_ things, but I personally doubt any of the birds shown here would experience bad health from what was on offer.
@@carkod There are certainly plenty here! 6% of the world's biodiversity is in this little country. They can have all they want. At different times of the year, their diet changes. Now, they're returning from migration, nesting, and mating. What their bodies crave is calories. They want fruit. That's why they migrate here. We have an abundance.
This is absolutely stunning! I could sit there all day watching the parade of beautiful birds- my fellow birdwatching friends are going to love this, thank you for sharing😊
Such rich beautiful colors! One after the other, they do not disappoint!
Just start throwing food everyday around your place, and u will get the same.
These birds wouldn't do that with people around, that's why they have the go pro set up :(
Why don’t all of you set up a food tray for all wildlife? They need our help!! Humans taking over their habitats and food sources.

Love this! My wife’s says I’m like an old man sitting on our porch and watching birds. Lol but I do and it’s enjoyable! We have blue birds and purple martin colonies.
Funny! Very cool. :) ❤️
I would also love sitting and watching birds
tall32guy I love my birds and I’m 20 . By the time I’m an old man I will have an army
im young and love to watch birds. i spend so much money on seed.
I have really enjoyed my window feeders.
I even have a hummingbird window feeder now.
You do have to put lines on windows so birds dont smack into them.
The best 24 minutes spent on UA-cam in my whole life, I already saved this video so I can watch it any time in the future. Blessings!
Aw, thank you! So happy you liked it. Please check out my other videos!
Why are people “thumbs-downing” this video?! Talk about miserable individuals. It’s pure zen. Thank you for sharing! So many gorgeous babies!❤️

They probably take issue with the exposed nails on the landing pad.
I'm in heaven watching this. Imagine waking up each day to see such miraculous visitors. Thank you so much for sharing!
Glad you are enjoying it, Cleo!
You know you have a world class bird feeder!! I play it for my cockatoos who get excited watching it. Cockatoos in Hawaii watching toucans in Costa Rica, lol.

@@CostaRicaBirdCam I saw you mention fruit is expensive there..which really surprised me because I thought a lot of that fruit comes from Costa Rica?
@@CostaRicaBirdCam Wow..I'm sorry to hear that! When I lived in Yucatan, MX by the ocean..it was not only paradise but everything was so cheap! Fruit, Veggies, Meat, Chicken..even the restaurant food and beer was plentiful and super cheap. And the healthcare was Universal and the meds were cheap as well. I guess it really depends where you find your paradise when it comes to cost. But it looks like you have a very nice house and lifestyle so thanks for sharing and feeding the beautiful birds amigo!
@@CostaRicaBirdCam Don't you grow papayas and bananas in your yard?
The Toucan's dance towards the end is spectacular! Perhaps he is seeing his reflection in the window! What a show! Bravo!
I think that's an aracari. Toucans have larger beaks. I think it was saying "I don't like water-melon, bring me some more banana".

My goodness, I am from Brazil and the Tucanos are one of our national symbols. I had never seen them eating 🙀😳 Thanks so much for sharing 👍🙏 I know someone who has been to Costa Rica and she said she was marvelled by so many beautiful birds. Your videos prove it 😻
Ez csodálatos, nagyon köszönöm! Ennyiféle küllőt még nem láttam egyszerre.

Wow. I enjoyed that so much. Thank you for leaving it without music, so we can hear the birds. That Toucan at 20:44 is hilarious.

I like how some of the birds and the squirrel take their food to go 😊
Or just anti social.
I love Costa Rica, its beyond anything I could have ever imagined. We went to a Dole pineapple farm and they cut a green pineapple off the plant and we ate it. It tasted 1000x better than any ripe pineapple in Arizona USA. The fruit in general was mind blowing how good it was.
I found that was also true with their chicken and beef. Much better than US. At least 15 years back there were no chemicals or antibiotics. Super fresh delicious chicken..
No noise or music, no talking, only sounds of those beautiful birds in a wonderful place. This is one of the best videos, many thanks to you🤗
I LOVE this! I live in Beaumont, Texas, United States. I have my back patio dressed in tropical green foliage with bird feeders & a hot tub. In the summer, I turn off the heater of the hot tub and just pretend it is a lagoon in the tropics. I wish tropical birds were in my area. Thanks for sharing.
Nice! My wife is from Nederland!
This is so sweet. I love to see that people are kind to animals in the wild. Life his hard even for birds so my hats off to you... God bless you.
I have to just add that what we see as hard is really necessary. Seasonal variability in food supply is what governs the behavior, health, and life cycles of many wild birds. Breeding is one example. If conditions for breeding are always perfect it becomes physiologically unhealthy for it to be in breeding readiness constantly ....as they often inadvertently are in captivity. Birds have many environmental triggers for behaviour that the average person doesn't realise.
Bread is not ideal for the bird digestion, the cutest dinosaurs to be seen
I’m starting to think I am living in the wrong part of the world.. wow I would love to see these gorgeous birds every day
We didn't know we were birders until we came for a visit! Now we're hooked!
I live in Florida, which I feel is the next best thing. I had parrots on my bird feeder the other day.
The only sad part about living in such a beautiful place is watching development happen all around me. I don't know if that's true in Costa Rica.

That's reassuring, It seems Costa Rica is a very eco-conscious country. I've been to there twice. My second trip was a birdwatching getaway at Selva Verde.
I miss the rainforest, from the early morning howler monkeys to the nighttime hikes. The way people live reminds me of my parents home country of Croatia. Pura Vida!

@@CostaRicaBirdCam It is fascinating. In the 1800's Audubon thought that hummingbirds hitched rides on the back of geese!

Marsh Wetland All birds are territorial.
The birds are posturing not fighting. Dominant birds eat first. That’s literally the origin of the phrase “pecking order.”
Mesmerizing. I wouldn’t get a thing done all day I’d be too busy watching the birds. Thank you for sharing
Yes, it is a bit distracting. My desk (the dining table) looks out onto the feeder. On good bird days, my work takes me twice as long!
impressive to see all these beautiful birds with so many colors. Thanks for sharing that beauty 😊
As a bird/wildlife photographer any place that has such beautiful birds I would immigrate to in a jiffy! I don't just take photos of birds I love birds. Absolutely stunning!
All my expat friends have the same thing in their yard. You'd be a kid in a candy store, here!
Ok, I’m admitting it. I’m jealous. They are so beautiful! I can’t imagine what it must be like to live on an island paradise. But this gives me a good idea. Awesome.💖💖💖💖💖
Although Costa Rica is not an island the birds are indeed gorgeous in here :)
What was your idea? Keep at it.
Makes me realise how raucous and full on Australian birds are. So civilised!
Ha! They can be pretty testy here, too! I'd love to see what you've got though!
Wow! I can't believe the variety of beautifully colored birds at 1 perch! What a rich blessing!
Now this was some of the best content I’ve ever seen on UA-cam!

The feeders are just outside my work window. And yes, it takes twice as long to get stuff done!
My husband said, "bird feeder? More like a delicatessen!" Love this so much. Thanks for the share.
You are so welcome, Noelle!
Besides the variety of birds at the feeder, I was amazed by the different species willing to eat side by side. Thanks for sharing🐦
Oh my, God! You have beautiful birds in Costa Rica! I did an Eco-Tour there many years ago. it was an awesome trip. All of the wildlife is incredible. Loved your country.
I went on holiday to Costa Rica just over a year ago and it was the first time I took a holiday and fully relaxed. Beautiful place, lovely people, great food and amazing wildlife. I want to go back ASAP.
We loved it so much we moved here! Haven't regretted it for a minute. Living the Pura Vida life!
@@CostaRicaBirdCam You only live once. So glad you're happy there.
Costa Rica is one the best widelife countries I've ever been too along with the Galapagos and Brazil. In playa del Coco Costa Rica a whole family of Howler Monkeys came into the village and started well... howling. You can hear them from miles away and I was only ten feet away from them for ages.
The bird life on display here is incredible. If you took all the most colourful birds in my country and put them in one spot it wouldn't compete with this palette.
And they are LOUD! We have the howlers and capuchins in the bosque behind us. The capuchins are dead-silent. The howlers will wake us up at 4:30 am. No sleeping through that!
@@CostaRicaBirdCam I guess that is why there is an order of monks called capuchins and there isn't an order called Howlers. Lol

In the UK we have beautiful garden birds of a very different nature, quieter colours etc with a few exceptions, goldfinchs being quite exotic by comparison. She is a beautiful bird. ❤️
Just heard it on another video it's crazy !
Yes, they have several calls. One sounds like rustling leaves. Another is poly-tonal and very distinctive, sometimes accompanied by a a bowing motion. I don't think it's a mating call, because they do it all year long. They also build fascinating nests made of fibers from banana leaf stems. They hang them from trees. Many are more than a meter in length! Really interesting birds, and beautiful!

This shows what I love about birds/bird-watching. You can go anywhere in the world and see birds common in that area (like these Costa Rican backyard birds) and be dazzled by the different species. Although I thought I saw a Flicker which is common in the US too.
Many of these (apparently) are common somewhere, because most migrate! It gets very quiet here in the summer months. That's why a live cam is not really feasable. It would be very boring mid-year!
They have no interest in the processed bread. Just want healthy, tasty fruit. :) What was that large bird that made off with half a banana around 18:00?
yes, same bird (sp) I think was in a mid-background tree at 5:48 then took a quick fly in and out at 5:53.
