- The story of Neela's RX8- You'll never believe where it turned up.
While, today, the RX8 has earned more respect, back in 2005 it was not very popular among tuners.
Despite a modest 238 hp, that was pretty decent but it was not considered a competitive drift car.

It's crazy to me that this movie is considered a failure, it's was the hype back in the day, and it's one of the best fast and furious imo,
It's one of the few movies that I enjoy rewatching from time to time
I feel the same, I watched it 4 times in the theater 😅
it’s only considered a flop due to box office, anyone who’s seen the series knows it’s easily top 3
It was the last movie with good paint/graphic designed car liveries.
I miss the days when the cars were stars...
I nearly bought Neela's RX8 from New Era. It was for sale in the UK
But you didnt
How much was it?
Didn’t they also have the undamaged Mona Lisa S15 also for sale at that time? Here were a few other cars from the movie as well
Huuuuuuuuuuh😮
When people say “nearly” they have no credibility.
I didn’t know it was for sale is basically saying “I nearly bought it” 😂
It's funny how many people bash... On The fast and the furious Tokyo drift. 😢 It's one of my favorites out of the franchise.
Back then, but nowadays? It's not bashed anymore. Heck, none of the first 7 movies are bad. 9 and X are really bad and 8 was OK.
Nothing wrong with the movie. Just don’t give us a characters then replace them with a whole new story and cars not expect us to miss the original cast
It beats any of the ones that came after it.
I will not take this rx8 slander
I think saying that the RX-8 "only" made 238 HP is disingenuous. That's only 17 horsepower less than the twin turbo FD RX-7, and 56 horsepower MORE than the FC Turbo-II RX-7, all of which have a variation of the 13B engine. Out of those 3, the RX-8 is the only N/A one, and if we compare it to the N/A FC GXL, it makes 92 horsepower more. Remember, while these are with different variations of the 13B engine, they're all still the 13B rotary
238bhp N/A is some decent going tbh
@@JDizzlePowah Yeah, acting like it isn't a lot is kinda ridiculous. Especially since it's a 1.3L that revs to 9.5k RPM
So much of the hate for the RX8 comes from the fact that any amount of effort into that version of the rotary is only going to get you half as far as any of the predecessors. Combine that with people discounting anything with more than 2 doors and it's rather busy styling compared to the slicker 90s heros. And you're left with a car that just didn't find a good niche in the shadow of it's turbo'd predecessor.
As a stock vehicle though, it really doesn't deserve the flak it takes. The amount the engineers bent over backwards to get that car to market is god's work worth the extra decade of rotary support we got.
@@syaieyawell said. The car handles amazing and is no slouch if you keep the revs high. Will out handle most sports cars on a tight course and many FD owners who also own the rx8 prefer the rx8 chassis.
Most people today would Consider Tokyo Drift the only good movie after the first one. It flopped when it came out but we began to appreciate it as time went on.
As cheesy as Tokyo drift was ..it was more realistic than anything made after
Cars crash in Tokyo drift, badly injured or death. New F&f cars crash mean nothing.
Of "fast and furious" it's my second favorite. The first was was my fav. I liked F&F for being an American initial D, when they went away from that I stopped watching.
💯% Facts
Yup I know
Shame that Tokyo Drift was a Box Office failure.
Imo the best, most authentic car movie in the entire series.
I love this movie to death.
I love part 1 and Tokyo Drift and are the only ones I can still watch today. I think if they made a Tokyo Drift 2 with how they ended it with Vin Diesel it would have made good money.
Tokyo Drift is the second best of the entire series.
Honestly I loved Tokyo drift. RB swapping the mustang was badass. Tanner Foust stunt driving. And of course gorgeous Asian women 💔
Im from Pakistan and back in 2007-2008 this car was imported here. Couldnt agree more that this car was treated not in the best way cuz of its engine and because at that time Pakistan was flooded with Rx-8s. I heard and saw this car alot near my locality. As of now Neela's Rx8 is now being restored again for the 5th time at the Capital of Pakistan, Islamabad with a 1JZ-GTE setup and i hope they get the paint job right.
Thanks for the update.
Do you know who’s the owner?
@@DoctorTauri Not yet bro but ill update if i find out
Where in Islamabad?
@@abdullahjavaid4182 its was with Street Tuners like 2 months ago
I don't need a computer to tell me about my throttle response 💅💅💅
No superstars...Yet it's the best movie in the series.
"The RX-8 made a measly 238hp. They should have gone with an S15 Silvia." which made a measly 9hp more at 247 lmao.
The RX-8 is heaver, and less aggressive with gearing though. 250 HP is a decent amount for a 2600-2800lb car.
Main issue with Rx8s is that they are very hard to convert to FI. And they barely hold together before any mods. Pair that with the glass 6speed transmission. A S15 is the complete opposite.
@Mrjohnnymoo1 not saying it's not a better car than the rx8. Not to mention the s15 is turbo and the rx8 is na. And they make close to the same power. The rx8 could do the same job for what they needed it for js
Also ignoring the fact there was already 2 in the movie lmao
@@TheRealEmile i only remember the mona lisa. what was the second s15?
The recession killed the tuner movement, for better or worse
The only bad tacky car in tokyo drift was bow wows vw with the hulk stuff.. all the other cars were actually very nice. And well done. Not so riced out like 2f2f
Speaking of cars from Tokyo Drift, do you know what happened to the RB26 Mustang? What's her current whereabouts? I've always been fascinated by that car.
I once drove a RX8 belonging to a friend of mine, i recall smooth engine and sporty handling. Rotary engine is something else, lack of vibrations and that distinctive sound.
Tokyo Drift is the best thing to ever exist for the tuner culture
Tokyo drift is still the most underrated fast and the furious movie and id be willing to bet that it is also the most influential movie of the whole series and has done more for drift culture around the world then anything else before or after
“The RX8 only made 238 measly horse power” true but power isn’t everything. “At that time, that was barely more than a Honda RSX or civic” well about 30-ish horse power more, the kind of power that people would mod their car for. “the s15 would’ve been a much better choice” but that was only 12 more horse power than the RX8 compared to the 30-ish more than the civic which the RX8 had that was complained about. Where’s the logic in this point? I’m no RX8 fan boy nor a hater but....eh?
Also S15 was never sold outside of Japan. There is a reasoj why there are tons of RX-8's around even if most of them are abandoned without engine rebuild. Turboing renesis like older 13b is instant fix for torque.
People bitched about S200 0's torque too and that car is universaly loved
@@Kacpa2the main problem with the RX-8 is the styling. People really didn't catch on with it. As for the S2000, the styling as well as the engine were a nice combo in an affordable package.
@@Kacpa2s15s were sold outside of Japan new, was plenty sold here in nz
I still loved the car at the time I first saw the movie. Suited her character quite well in an odd way.
Tokyo has grown into a cult classic.
What about VW Hulk ?
I love that car from Tokyo drift . I to am sick and tired of seeing MOPARs
Always thought the cars from Tokyo drift where epic 👌 definitely some awesome rides
Man I really enjoyed that movie, I went to the theater on opening day, then again three times after.
I love you, Craig LOL just an honest, down to earth car guy. I want you to sign the dash of my 2006 Mustang GT
Best movie of all the series... Thanks for the videos and the info Craig 🙏
For context the rx8 was new at the time. A lot of people would have wanted an rx8 initially.
Tokyo drift may have not been considered a sucess back then. But im sure over the years the profits they have made from dvd and streaming purchases have put it up there with the best of them. Cause it is a damn good car movie. Appreciated by those it was tailored for. But unfortunately not enough explosions and cliff jumping like action for all of the mainstream audiences that pump all of the money into this brainless dead franchise so they can be "entertained". Those kind of view points are whats killing creativity nowadays for good movies, games etc that are made purely to be appreciated by certain people and to be fun and enjoyable for decades. Instead its how can we make something for the least money that will appeal to the most average joe's that have no real taste or care for anything specifically and just want brain dead action? Who cares if its a love letter, or a classic that can be enjoyed for years cause its good. Or even just made to be good art? No that doesnt matter anymore. Now its, where is my instant money for making the average sheep drool with the booms on screen? So freaking dumb.
There is a car called the "Hansa MX5", a German Mazda-dealership imported a bunch of Mazda MX5s (Miata in the US) of the third generation (which has the same platform as the RX8) and fitted them with the RX8 powertrain (and some other goodies).
Still probably not blistering fast, but having a rotary convertible must be neat.
Bro they literally did a RX-7 convertible (the FC Gen I think)
“Like a stripper at a bachelor party” frame that
Lmao looks like that girl who wanted the SRT4 in the movies, kept sleeping with more execs and now can’t get rid of these things, granted Diesel I believe has a bad influence on these movies, he just wants Riddick with cars, Walker was the feel good cool car vibe, not Diesel, he’s more of the drive a black car wearing a gimp suit vibe
Someone tell this guy nobody cares about his opinion just tell us about the cars
Lmfao. He just loves to talk and is just milking this F&F stuff.
U right
I have learned to have appreciation for the Japanese cars, even though I grew up in the 70s and 80s and have owned several American muscle cars. There is one American car that I would absolutely LOVE to get my hands on still though... Ever since the movie "Phantasm" I have loved the 72 and 72 'Cuda. Hemi is desired but I would not turn down a 340 small block either...
My RX8 is as much fun to drive as my old FB, FC or my current FD. To judge it by power is just goofy 😂 it’s a fun and very beautiful car and to say it’s feminine is just plain ignorant.
Love this reply!!! Same feelings! ^
Tokyo drift was entertaining and a nice little side story to the F&F time line. Was nice to introduce drifting and trends from Japan.
Maybe you should go to a drift show or something. It lots of fun and everyone is happy to help. My opinion is that this film is really cool and maybe one day drift myself
JDM for life 🥰
Rx8 Is Nice car wtf bro
But looks ugly compared to the RX-7 FD in its stock form. Only seen a few Japanese modified ones that looks good.
@@sonyx5332 I love the rx8.. rx7s are only nice if done well.. a lot of them look.. well. Too skinny
Lieberman only likes cars that are popular with the masses. He lacks originality.
Lol yep. He's just parroting bs he heard online from other people who never owner the car
@@ve2430 like him shitty on the Neon SRT4. They are a great budget car that can easily be built to be pretty fast
Another great video Craig. Love the history of each of these cars, from the hero’s to the zeros. These cars in someway inspired a whole generation of enthusiasts. Thank you for sharing with us.
I personally always loved the RX-8, it might not have been the car people "expected" out of it (I'm not sure why anyone expected a 4 door coupe to be an "RX-7 successor" when Mazda didn't developed this car or specially, never promoted the car as such) but it is a criminally overlooked car just because "it doesn't makes power".
I will hardly disagree with the take that Neela's car should've been an S15, this movie already had 2 of them, it didn't needed a third. DK's gang having nothing but Z33s was bad enough, I like diversity with my movie cars and the RX-8 fit Neela like a glove, specially considering her character is a "gaijin" like Sean was, so her driving an RX-8, an "outcast" car, fit the character perfectly.
Sad fate about the hero car, as a Rotary guy it pains me to know it has a piston engine now, but it's better than the fate of the Integra from the first movie. Hopefully whoever buys that poor thing next does society a favor and returns the 13B Renesis to it's place.
While the RX8 never became the tuner car that the fanboys wanted, at the time people were still giving it a chance. It was the newest model car outside of the Evo VIII front'ed Evo IX to be in the film. On it's own merits, especially compared to most 4 doors of the era, it held it's own in stock form and honest fits right in for the time.
Thanks Craig. Keep up the good work
The movie also flopped because at that time pirate movies were huge, so basically people had watched the movie without going to theaters. 🏴☠️
I’m currently working on a replica of Neela’s RX8, it’s amazing to hear the original is still out there! But I’ll make my own💖
Hopefully you are filming as you go so you can (eventually) do it for free!
Thanks for another great episode Craig 👍🏼 always interesting to learn about the state of these cars and where they're now! Keep us updated with the outcome of that auction 3 weeks from now 😀
Rx8 is one of the coolest cars that are still affordable to the average car enthusiast today. The renasis build was badass. Shame they put a jz in it, in my opinion.
238hp isn’t bad tbf
It's a victory for Tokyo Drift fans and Classic F&F fans in general
I love the first 3 movies,, and your channel.
I don't give a danm about the rx8.. I just want neela
“At that time, that was barely more than a Honda RSX or civic” Now here is why you're wrong. First power is not everything about a car. Secondly that little 1.3l Rotary engine was not "barely more" but it was way more than you're thinking. Probably not even making research tbh. Base *Acura* RSX (Showed as the pic in the vid) btw was making only 160hp in its beginning and then Facelift was making 155hp, Only the type s was closer with 200 and 201hp on the facelift version. The Civic (shown in the vid) was making just 127 on the SI model from their little 1.7L. Not forgetting the SIR EP3 that was making only 160hp (Same engine and engine specs from the base Acura RSX). While the RX8 with the Renesis Rotary was making 238hp from a 1.3L 2 rotor engine N/A.
I'm not saying this in the meaning of pure disrespect, but im honestly disappointed how you think the RX8 is just underpower to that point of making an comparaison on these 2 cars.
Whenever Craig speaks about the RX-8, it's 90% bashing it because it was fast, looked ugly (in his opinion) and doesn't have a turbo. Those are very BASIC reasons and opinions to dislike a car. To each his own though.
As an owner of an RX-8 for 4 years now, I love mine and think the power it has is plenty and VERY smooth, which is how I prefer power delivery in a car to be.
And yes, I've driven faster cars. Including ones with forced induction on both ends of the spectrum. I'm not clowning those, but I'm simply saying the RX-8 just deserves at LEAST a little bit more credit than it currently gets.
You say that Tokyo Drift doesnt have any superstars but it does have Keiichi Tsuchiya in it and that tops it for me
Zachary Ty Brian made a funny cameo in the opening too
They already smashed the Silivia , probably didnt want to use 2 of the same car in the movie.
RX8 was my first sports car, and enjoyed it for the short time i owned it.
RX8 is a great fun car for cheap
Tokyo drift was the last fast and furious
i feel like im constantly i nthe minority, but its my second fav in the franchise. i fckn love it lol. but absolutely agree... it is the last true F&F
@@LichWorks it is 100% the second best movie in the franchise.
Somebody over there is in love with mopars 🤣🤣
0:28 Acura RSX**
If it's a Honda, it's an Integra
Dang Bow Wow isn’t a superstar?
Tokyo Drift is one of the reasons why I know about the S15 and the RX7.
The first 3 movies are the reason why I love cars as well as the countless video games that I played over the years.
This is why i and many have lost interest. It's no longer about cars we can buy and mod and have fun with and antics we can relate to. It's all stupid stunts in disposable cars nobody really cares about.
My mind was completely blown when i first saw tokyo drift. Wtf they doing now?!
A tweaked out MR-2 would have been a better option, but they really should have gone with a Porsche Cayman (like they did for Gal in Fast 4)
Nah adding luxury cars to Fast and Furious was part of making it boring to be honest, the mr2 would have been better
RX8 - Ideal car for Neela , no way
Because needed different RWD cars etc ...
Mr. Lieberman sir, why don’t you give us fans the movie Redline...maybe a JDM edition...sir, you have a lot of connections.
Redline is dope
1:40 I'm not really against any adds but as a car lover this add is game changer tbh
Great content as always Mr Craig and thank you for doing all the research
Because believe me I know it's not an easy task
I’ll be honest. S15 is a cooler car but only had 250hp so not sure what you mean by it being a better choice
rb26 swapped
This guys is trying to get clicks and views but the s15 is an amazing platform and was a great rival to my rx8 both would teach you discipline but not try and kill you like the older 911..
An RSX Type S with a turbo should have made an appearance back then, but awell
the rx-8 wasn't a bad looking car, the main reason it got so much hate was it having a n/a rotary and not having the same twin turbo 13b as the rx-7
Not just being N/A and lacking the power, the renesis 13B is also notorious for being the one to fail
The 13B would no longer meet CARB requirements. That's why when the RX-8 was introduced, the Renesis rotary was put into service. The exhaust ports were relocated and the oil metering pump pumped less oil into the chambers. It was a losing proposition from the inception - Unless you removed the catalytic converters and ran pre-mix, those engines would only last for about 50,000 miles.
They last 100k minimum, 150k regularly, and some even more. Mine just passed 100k and compression is not super high but not bad either, starts fine hot or cold and has a good amount of life left in it. I've only had it for about 10k miles so it's never seen premix until then. Also S1 rx8s have 2 oil injection spots per rotor housing vs 3 in the s2, so S1 probably needs premix more thsn S2 models. @@DucatiPaso750
The way he described the engine brought me back to the days when I used to read super street, sport compact car, etc.
Next 1m$ car definitely is Eclipse in the first movie, i always love that car especially the scene in T&K Supermarket at Little Saigon. So nostalgia.
"So y'all race with these things, huh? Cute little toys."
Silvia yes but no.. for the time it was a pretty cool car and enough power. 230? Bro, the eclipse was 200, the gen 3 of the time was 201 lol. Gen 4 i think had come out and was 263? Civic si for the time had barely 200 and the ep3 which i owned one was like 160. So what are we talking about here? It was decent power. Problem was rotary.
all true, i guess my point was that car just didn't have a reputation as a competitive drift car at the time.
@@craiglieberman ah ok. Id agree. It was a placement id say due to video games and being a bit popular for the time. Juiced, nfs etc. As far as drifting, it was rwd tho lol the others were all fwd. Not a drift missle but probably better option for the time than most. It also had big shoes to fill due to rx7. So it got more hate haha
Thats american ep3 the euro and japan got the k20 with 200hp never knew why the Honda got downgrade to american market
@@tomasmonteiro8864 same thing. Only 200. Point is, power wise, the rx8 was ok and just enough. And it eas made for the masses. Rx7 had power and sleek but was what 40-45k? Rx8 was like 26k msrp i think.
0:14 Because it's the one of the most iconic sports cars of the early 2000s?????
Fftd is a masterpiece
i had a crush on neela
We all know that, RX-8 is been Mia's car in NFS Most Wanted 2005. Actually, she was not the only hero who used it. The girl named Izzy from Blacklist owned it too. It appears in X-Men 2 as Cyclops' car. As for me, the main problem of this car is engine. It's powerful but it would never last long. But the design... I like the doors. It makes RX-8 look like coupe, but won't make any problems for rear sitters when getting in.
How much do u fkn know
Ben10 also used an Rx8 in their film
I bet it went through all those engines due to Mazda being a poor parts manufacturer in the after market.
I agree we need movies that allow us to fall in love with the cars not just watch stunts.
Example I would like to have seen more like the scenes with the 2000 gt-r.
It needs to be car culture movies not just action movies.
I like the Tokyo drift movie too though.
Get sick of seeing dodge chargers especially the newer models supplied by dodge just for the stunt scenes.
"Uwabaki" 😁
"How about that Sparco steering wheel?"
a lot of people didnt like tokyo drift. personally i love it, because i had just bought an Evo 8.. and my friend had an Rx7 also, so we enjoyed it... its still my fav fast and furious film..
I some of the box office slump for FF3 was due to FF2 which was still a fun movie, but not as good as FF1. If the second one was worse than the first, who would think the 3rd would be better than the second and be jumping at the chance to see another?
I remember your bayside blue accord(I think) w R34 sedan tails
Id 100% be interested in buying the RX8 and bringing it back here to the states and putting it back to its former glory
HMU on my INstagram, I'll connect you.
just driven need to buy that rx8
Awesomeness car!!!!!!😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
1JZ RX-8 is NUTS!
The first series RX8 launch was just a bag of problems. The early engines and starters were problematic and likely fixing the problems and therefore monopolizing the engineers could have been why Mazda didnt cave and offer a turbo 13B-MSP. I still like the RX8, but if I had to have a series 1 I would either have a 13B hybrid MSP from an FD3S, 20B Unobtainium, LS2, or Turbo/supercharge the 13B (but on a series 1 assume the side seals are gone and budget a complete rebuild with the upgraded springs)
The series 2 is a different story. They finally got a chance to improve things and add in Canbus generation engine computers (faster), and better the gearing. It does not make much sense to swap a series 2 because a series 1 isnt canbus, and it could way more easily accommodate a Haltech or a swapped pCM. Most of the car is not talking via Canbus like on a series 2. It would be a hurdle to keep stock functionality on a series 2 with how its sensors work, several networks work, and the SRS and ABS communication. It actually works pretty well in stock from on the series 2.
So today, dont buy an RX8 to drag race, buy a series 2 R3 or Spirit R (if you can) because of the balance and buy a series 1 for wanting to get your hands dirty with some kind of engine out project.
The RX-8 slaps. So what if you have to replace the engine every 60K miles! XD
You only have to if you didn't take care of it correctly.
Craig I gotta get this straight from the source. Hollywood star cars in Gatlinburg, TN claims to have the Production #2 Blue skyline that Paul drove. Is this accurate?
Theirs a car in Oklahoma that pall drove. It's not for sale.
I believe that they have a FAST 4 Skyline, but that car is a GTT conversion to GTR cosmetically.
I had an RX-8; practically no torque, but get it near the red line on a nice twisty road and even in stock configuration, it's a great little car. Would still have preferred an RX-7 FD over it, but at the time the RX-8 was a cheap and fun car.
Long life to the thumbnails
I love this movie not sure why this movie didn't do good
Tokyo drift was the best one racing wise
The next one supposed to go back to its roots but I highly highly doubt it. Craigs widebody M3 was built when I was a member of e46fsnatics. He chronicled the build there and it was an awesome car. What ever happened to it??
we did get hahn, thats a plus
So they used the fwd sr20 out of the u13 bluebird???
No
